  • Powers of Ten: Pressure-induced solidification in MGPT tantalum modeled using ddcMD code on BlueGene/L
Description: In 2005, LLNL researchers under Fred Streitz won the 2005 Gordon Bell Prize for peak performance for a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation on the BlueGene/L supercomputer of tantalum solidifying at extreme temperatures and pressure. The simulation was noteworthy for two reason - it was the first scientific application to exceed 100 teraflops of sustained performance, and the first simulation of solid nucleation and growth demonstrably large enough to be free of finite-size effects. The movie “Powers of Ten” demonstrates the importance of system size for the calculation, showing first a view with the few atoms possible on previous computers and panning back to reveal, at each subsequent step, 10 times more atoms than before.
