i can honestly say that you are one of a kind, in the sense that i can watch every single one of your videos and say i've learned something from it. keep up the hard work man.
Finally a video that actually explains what to export in! and tips on choosing what to print with!
Thank you so much Evan i've been waiting for a video like this on youtube for so long!
I didn’t look at my youtube feed for like months and just realized your channel has grown hugely! Congratulations mate!
very informative tips Evan, thanks👌
I better get into some printing soon :P
My favourite youtuber over the past few months, I get stoked when I get the upload notification, keep smashing the content mate!
Yesssss I have literally just been debating this and been googling it most of the night and turns out its the same day you drop a video about it...its my lucky day! haha
You always have a video for the info I need. Thanks man. About to do my first large print and I’m launching my website for prints tomorrow!!!
This was super helpful! I have a project ( a large print) I am currently working on. This will help me make sure it is executed even better than I thought it would be. Thank you!
Can't wait to get at that point where I print my pictures!
What's stopping you doing it now?
JC Carty maybe nobody buying it
This video helped me a lot, Evan. Thank you!!!
Crazy useful bro! I was about to order my prints today! but I guess now I will go through your check list first to make sure I get as much as I can right! Thanks a lot brother!
Awesome advice! Setting up a print shop at the moment! Thank you :)
Thanks @evanranft for another great video. Perfect timing.
thanks for this video, can't wait to get started printing photos.
Thanks for another great video, Evan! You mentioned that both prints were taken with your Nikon cameras. Do you have any print taken with Fuji? I was wondering how the photos from mirrorless cameras look like on a large print. Does the crop factor play a big role here?
Super Helpful man! Really appreciate all the info you provide.. any print labs that you recommend??
When your quoting sizes of printed pictures are you talking about cm or inches?
Any recommendations on where to get these large photos printed?
You show your pictures with a white border, which looks great. When sending out an image to be printed with a border would you create this in Lightroom using the tools or add a 1" border for example through the print lab? I would only do this on paper though.
Thanks for this man. Lots of stuff was de-mystified in your explanation!
Hi Evan
I know it's an old video by now, but I have a question if I may..
Before you edit your images, do you calibrate your screen, and if, how often?
Anyway, thanks for good content!
Kind regards
what file type should be saved after the other settings are done?
Awesome information! Much appreciated. Quick question. How do you get the hair on your bangs so crazy low?
Great video dude!!! And I love your work man!!! 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks man. Super informative...I got to print soon so this was like perfect timing.
Glad it could help!
Been wondering about this topic bro. Hella timely. On your wall prints..did you do 240 or 300 resolution export? 240 would make your pixels go further but is it noticeable on a print of that size?
300 pixel per inch is my preferred export resolution for my prints
Evan Ranft you really need to know the native resolution of the printer. For example 300dpi is perfect for canon printers whereas 240dpi is better for Epson. Also it is better to resize your photo on export to the correct size and dpi otherwise the rip software / printer driver at the print lab will do it but Photoshop / Lightroom does a better job.
Have you used Gallery Street in Alpharetta/Roswell to print? I've used them to print from canvas to 1/4" masonite/board (they print on everything and have had zero issues with my using sRGB). Thanks for the tips on large printing which I have yet to do on any of my photos (other than paintings I've photographed for reproduction)
Thank you for the information!
Thank u Sir for the advice
Awesome advice dude ,many thanks 🙏
Really needed this! Thanks Evan!
Thanks for watching!!
I just printed my first large print. It's 20x30 of the golden gate bridge. Was nervous it was going to be bad. The cars and even the buildings across the bay are sharp! I have a Sony a6600.
Lovely. Can I add modpodge as a finishing touch for the canvas?
3:55 resolution is completely relative to how far you are watching the picture, and usually the bigger the picture the further you are going to be, so don't even worry about having 300ppi, you can make huge prints with most cameras. If you follow the 300ppi rule unless you have a 60mpx camera then you won't get large prints at all.
Could you explain? I’ve had trouble understanding this thinking. Perhaps there is a link you could forward. (I understand your comment was made some time ago and do not want to be a bother.)
if I put my photos on a stock site and some one purchased one does the site your with print the photos to the size the customer wonts or do you have to print them and send them to the buyer?
What kind of printer did you use to print this kind of photo and the paper or tarps ?
Hey evan! Last week i purchased the sony a7III and on saturday i fotographed a concert! You did many concerts. Can you make an advice or tip video about concert photography? I maybe want to do ir more and wanna learn a bit about it:)
Excellent video and detailed explanation of export settings. Perhaps I missed it but can you restate which editing tool you are using in this video? Thx
Where do I go to get the canva manufactured
Evan dope video-i think this is a topic thats not covered enough online. You should definitely put more videos up on the mechanics of printing. I remember printing my first print ( I shoot with a D810 too) and being super disappointed because the picture was not as a crisp or clear as I’d hope it’d be. Hoping to get better at making sure my photo is “print ready” before trying again
What is the largest you have printed with your xpro 2? I like the look of your canvas. I printed a photo with acrylic glass. It looks great but a bit more hassle to mount on the wall.
Question- How do you or where do you print your picture?
use Canvas HQ.. they are the best
thats my question for you!
Thanks Evan for the video
Do you use fuji X-H1 only for videos or also for taking photos? Do you recommend fuji pro cameras (like xt2) for landscape photograpy? (instead of a nikon high level apsc or ff)
Can you recommend some local print shops?! I’m out of Atlanta also! Thanks
What app is that, that tell how big you can print?
I am currently looking to switch from a d7500 to a z6 or z7 I might just go with the z6 the largest I see myself printing is 20x30 any suggestions would be appreciated.
THANK YOU!
super useful evan, thanks
So damn good dude. On top of your game!
Evan, you are the man! This was excellent information as I have had questions about this topic. Here’s a specific one; I have been told that exporting in TIFF format is best to achieve absolute top quality. Have you experimented with this yourself and/or what is your opinion about this file format? Also, if I’m ever in the ATL I’d love to hangout and shoot with you. Ever had any ideas about photo walks? Could be a good thing. ✌️
Great information !!
I've always wondered why Lightroom doesn't give you the option of exporting in CMYK. As a graphic designer working in the magazine industry if I ever sent a file off for print and the image colour space was RGB not CMYK, you best believe I'd get a paddlin'
You're right and Adobe is wrong? Nah.
Absolutely. For magazine work they will laugh RGB out of the building. Photoshop has the CMYK option, of course. Not a fan of Lightroom, but have recently started using ON1 for initial RAW processing and then importing into Photoshop for final output.
I thought the same thing, sending an RGB image to a printer seems wrong
I love this reel
Awesome tips I just got my first print back
What service you use to get your photos on the canvas
where do you order your prints from though?
I printed a 40"x60" image made by a 6.2MP Camera (EOS 10D) and it looks even better than some 18MP prints.
where did you get it printed?
Yup its all basically how far you will be looking at it. If printed at a smaller, say 8x10, then viewers will see it up close and notice every imperfections.
I got a shot that I want to print from my 10.2 MP D200. I think the image quality on it is great and the details are nice too. I'm just suffering from sticker shock to print a large photo.
at 10:00 , if i shoot a giant panorama on a d750 (24mp) that’s like 7000 pixels in length and 8000 pixels in width, would i be able to print in one of the bigger sizes with “perfect quality”? or is it still gonna be just mediocre
Is it cheaper in the long run to buy my own printer or send to print lab?
off topic question, i know you shoot fuji sometimes. Noticed in Lr, you have a .RAF file, do you not use iridient X or another software to convert the file to .DNG, etc while editing in Lr? Popular topic is .RAF files not handling well with Lr, thanks.
How do you get your photos on the squarespace account for people to view and see them to buy ?
I love printing my work... especially large!
How do you print Michelle?
Where did you go to get the large print
Bro… I can’t stop staring at your sleeve. Beautiful tattoo!!
Thank you sir.
Thanks man you dont knlw hw much im thqnkful
When you print canvas does it let you know what part of the photo will be "wrapping around" the sides
It takes an inch of the outer most and copies and mirrors it so you lose nothing
I've been thinking about printing some of my work. Super helpful video Evan
Thank you for watching!

Oh my gosh. Thank you.
🙏🙏🙏
Great stuff as always! Would love to know what service you use for printing. Or if you (understandably) keep that info to yourself.
I use a bunch of different ones, White House printing and American color institute are ones Iv used online. And a few different local labs in Atlanta
Should I use Adobe illustrator? Because I can blow up and small photo to a big photo without loosing quality
Great video and tips for printing only one thing missing is what file type to save, thanks
it says jpeg
Thanx buddy 👌
Great content very informative
Very useful information
What printing company do you use to print your pictures. @evanranft
I saw another video on large prints, and the photographer in that video shot large format, so for a moment, I was afraid that full-frame (let alone crop sensors) wouldn't be large enough. Good to see from this video that this isn't the case! Also, thanks for saying which cameras you used!
I've worked in prepress for a long time. Adobe RGB every time. Not even a question. It's a universally supported color space and it's larger than sRGB.
Oh boy, Evan uploaded a new video !
🙏🙏🙏
Very useful info 👍🏾
working on my first piece of mixed media and you are so damn knowledgeable dude thank you.
Great vid keep it up man!
👊💯
Sick Waimea Canyon print!
Great tips and things to think about! However a proper and serious printing firm will/should make sure you give them the best quality image and help you with this process. They might even make smaller copies of your print just to show you what the colours will look like.
However that treatment isnt standard and can cost you quite a bit.
question - what file do you save the photo for print out; jpeg or tiff? thanks!
In my opinion, TIFF is the way to go, especially if you don't want to see any compression artifacts in your images (like weird edges, color banding, etc).
In other words, JPEG is lossy (loose quality during each export, not good for editing), TIFF is lossless (preserves the original image quality, no matter how many times it's been modified).
The TIFF file might be much larger in size (disk space), but it is worth it in my opinion. If that can help, I would suggest those settings: TIFF 8 bit Uncompressed (If you use either a personal printer or a photo lab). Also make sure these photo Labs accept this file type, and they should if they really are serious in the business! (Again, just my opinion!)
whats the highest you can get?
most detailed prints possible
Got in early! Thanks for the info
Thank you for supporting the channel!
such an informative video Evan! Gonna get mine done soon!
Hi quick tip for anyone with a 12 megapixel camera that wants to print and uses lightroom, you can go to Photo -> Enhance -> Super Resolution. This means my 12mp image now becomes a 48 mp allowing you to do much larger prints (:
What printing service do you recommend?
Not really one to recommend because there’s so many and also a lot of local places to each city and town that do a great job! I use a bunch of different ones, White House printing and American color institute are ones Iv used online. And a few different local labs in Atlanta
You didnt talk about exporting in CMYK vs RBG
Nice video bro 💯 has anyone told u look like Ryan Sheckler
Wow, this video was so helpful! I had a print lying around and after watching this video I took it to a local gift shop to negotiate prices in hope that the shop might be able to sell it. The shop was really quiet, but the person said they would take my offer. 10 minutes later, the first person to walk into the store went in and bought the print. This was my first ever print sold and I am so happy, I got an amazing price for it aswell. Thank you Evan
Beauty .,..
Evan you could also put epoxy/resin on your photos. It will increase profits and make your prints come alive. Look it up. Thanks for sharing great content. ~SonyA6300 w/55-210mm & Sony A58 w/Tamron 70-200mm
RGB = Light spectrum colors format to be used to look at on a screen or display / CMYK print colors spectrum to be used in printing = printing colors. The major mistake you are making is that you are relying on your printer to make the convert, while you could first calibrate your display to have a better idea of your CMYK print. If you understand the differences between 72ppi/300dpi/viewing distance you will understand that you can get the super size print on a 20mp camera. Just to give you a better understanding, think of the year 2010 where many super size formats came from a 12mp camera the rule was to print at 120DPI what makes your print twice bigger but with the viewing distance, you will barely tell the quality difference if not at all. Do you remember the commercial 9 years ago? have you seen that big of a quality difference? If you have any questions ask to any print press expert or a pré-press designer that studied graphical design.
Well, I just ordered a 16"x48" canvas of a
B/W photo i took on my samsung A50 smartphone. Edited it with the standard photo editing features of the phone.
We'll see how it turns out.
How Didi it turn out :)
@@gamerado9886 yet to recieve it :(
Hey dude , I wonder How it turned out😍?
@@itsmemrqiz4135 hey! It didn't turn out bad, viewing it from 4-5 feet away it looks good. If you get up close it is not all that sharp but i like it
Coltan Vollrath good to hear that ❤️
Diggin those Lofi vibes
Hey Evan, what camera do you use to film these vlogs?
digital
muffemod haha I figured that 😅 I just wondered what model camera as it’s so clear yet so shallow.
