Glad my Italian family all know how to place themselves without upsetting anyone. If this happens in our get togethers my mother would throw the food in the bin or ring a charity to pick it up. I just pick up a plate and go to the outside table setting. We have 3 lots of table settings. One in the kitchen/dinning in the house, one under the veranda with BBQ / wood pizza oven and one in the garage / spare kitchen electric pizza oven area. Love living on a farm.

But it was still kind of surprising and very entertaining to me. And I really understand the whole situation. Some Black American families are like this, too. Especially during family reunion times. IK my family has like seating arrangements like who seats where and etc.
Typical, in my family its still lkike this today, takes an hour to get everyone to the table and when they go to the table they are all trying to figure it out where everyone is going to sit; saying "No you sit there, where is he gonna sit, no I need to be next to the kitchen" Then you can never get mom, grandma or your ant to sit down because they want to keep serving you food. LOL
