Agreed... Parents should know their kids... Agreed that their quick action saved Willa... Thankfully, they had the med... Imagine, what if they were in the middle of the ocean and this happened!! God bless the family...
Wow as a medically trained person I watched this with absolute admiration. The way you guys managed this was top drawer! I don’t know what was going on inside you but you were both calm which so showed in Willows response and the situation was managed to perfection! Well flipping done mom and dad !
I’m a nurse. I was up out of my chair and talking to the screen when she started scratching her arm. Glad you were able to stay calm and followed the verbal instructions for using the epipen. I was very concerned and yelling at the TV when she started drooling. That is a dangerous sign when she can’t swallow her own saliva. Please check with your medical team about when and if you would need to deliver an additional dose as the reaction can return. Your family is amazing. I love watching your videos every Sunday. Stay safe and keep sailing.
THANKYOU FOR SHARING THIS. We know this is personal, but someone seeing the signs and symptoms and the 'What To Do' in an example is a Public Service. So relieved you are fine Miss Willa.
A very big thankyou for allowing Willa's episode to be shown. As a mere viewer I am now more than ever invested in Willa's sailing adventure. So good to see how quickly she bounced back. Happy sailing.
I'm a retired labor and delivery nurse and in emergencies (which were numerous over my 30+ year career) and I was SUPER impressed with how calm (on the outside) you both were. You each had your own adrenaline surges going on I'm sure. But, you did not allow that to overwhelm you and cause panic. Well done. So thankful Willa is ok. Thank you for sharing your real life. From Marilyn C.
Absolutely no judgement here. You guys are awesome parents and my wife and I felt for you so much! So glad your beautiful girl is fine! You handled it great! Tim and Tammie Miller
I've got two kids, teenagers now and man does this hit home. Our kids don't have known allergies but ANYtime your child is sick or in danger, the adrenaline starts pumping. I'm sweating right now just having watched this. Thank you for sharing and glad Willa and the fam are doing great now!
Anticlimactic shock is caused by allergic reactions. My grandson has a severe peanut allergy. I didn't want to watch this but I am SO glad I did. I'm so grateful you aired this. I cried. I am beyond grateful your LO is OK. We've never had to use the epi pen but I'm so glad I have seen it used in real life. Much love and many blessings to you and your family.
Great job guys! I’m a firefighter paramedic and have given epi to lots of anaphylactic folks over the years. You handled it like seasoned professionals. Love your channel and if I ever meet Willa, I will not offer any food! Take care guys!
Omg, I'm so glad she's ok! My sister was about her age when we discovered she has an allergy to shellfish. We were tent camping in Canada at the time and it was prior to epipen's so we used benadryl til we got to a hospital. Great job handling that medical emergency 👏 And I agree, never knew mayo can have milk in it (I'm lactose intolerant). Gonna read the mayo labels now!
Mayo generally has no milk but the light versions not containing so much oil use milk powder as a bulker. Proper mayonnaise is egg yolk and best olive oil, nothing else. I have an allergy to Aspartame and that does horrible things to me. You wouldn't believe what has Aspartame in it these days. Glad Willa was OK though. Mum and dad are with it and prepared for all eventualities with their children.
Well done guys. I’m a nurse practitioner as well as a Mom who has a son who has anaphylaxis to all nuts. It’s so good you put that video up. A very good learning tool for people who are watching. 👍🇨🇦🇨🇦
Having lived with allergies my whole life, I can tell you that awareness of this issue is much much better than it was 40 years ago or even 30 years ago, my advice read the labels when you can, when in doubt leave it on the shelf. Though I have been known to rummage through the shelf to find the bottle where the sticker was placed in a different place and the english ingredients were visible, or even hold 2-3 bottles to be able to read the ingredients list around the stickers, so I know the pain. I've had colleagues wonder why I didn't participate in morning tea's at work, but when you don't know what the ingredients are it's not worth the risk.
My heart goes out to you being a parent. Willa will be the smartest , toughest kid around. The Photo of her holding onto the tiller of the outboard is the best. I grew up on A floating House on Great Central lake. Love your Channel ,it's part of my Sunday. Stay safe , love you all.
Thank you for sharing. I can totally relate...especially to, “don’t offer my child any food”. You have no idea how complicated this is in a public school setting. 🇨🇦❤️
Also allergic to dairy as a child and kids used to feed me cheeze it’s because they would find it funny when I would get sick and throw up. I learned fast to accept food from no one.
i personally are glad you shared this with us, so many poeple out there are in the same boat and good to be made aware too others in this position. proud of you guys for showing good parent responsibility. i don't care what others say, i think you the correct thing. no matter where you are, the same conditions apply.
You guys continue to amaze me with your adventures. Please don't be scared to ever post something that we all can learn from. I am so happy that you do what you do. Well done for acting so quickly and most of all calmly with Willa. Keep doing what you guys do. You rock.
How scary. Willa’s reaction was swift and continued to escalate. You handled it calmly and didn’t wait too long to start treatment which is commonly what people do. I carry an epi-pen too and they were hard to get in US during covid as well. My allergist gave me a vial of epinephrine and hypodermic syringes and showed me how to measure and administer. Now that the immediate crisis is over, I’d keep her on Benadryl for another 24 hours. After epi wears off there is sometimes another reaction. I wish you and her continued good health as she lives and deals with this.
Solid work. As a EMT/firefighter I've been on many calls like this. You guys should be commended on responding quickly and calmly. Your calm certainly helped her responding so well. Obviously, sailing a boat around the world has given you the abilities to make rational decisions under pressure quickly. Showing her reaction, and how to respond properly may help save someone's life someday.
I’m so glad Willa is doing well after her reaction!! My husband suffers from idiopathic anaphylaxis, which means he has that type of reaction due to absolutely nothing. He has even woke up in the middle of a night’s sleep unable to breath and covered in hives. I feel your pain and my thoughts are with you! Epi pens should be with you in arms reach 24-7!!!
You guys gave me quite the scare. Thank God Willa pulled through. You guys are awesome parents. Great example of awesome parenting. Please stay safe always. Thank you Ben & Ashley for sharing this video with us all. May God bless you and keep you all safe.
Wow, that must have been scary! SO glad Willa is ok! Thanks for sharing with us, stay healthy and stay happy! Always looking forward to your next episode.
You guys did the right thing and you saved your daughter life you are well prepared for emergency and that is a very good thing to do when you’re sailing in a boat you guys are the best and your children are lucky to have parents like you
Got emotional watching this, have a little one same age as Bodhi (almost exactly!) and just empathized with the whole situation and your emotions. So glad Willa is OK!
It was so good of you to share what you did in a very human moment. So happy Willa is doing well and you two did an amazing job under extreme stress! God Speed and safe adventures!
Upsetting to see, you reacted so quickly and calmly. You are such good parents I wish you and you family the best of health and luck on your future journey. Sending you love and best wishes from the uk, keep up your fantastic parenting I wish you all the luck in the world. You are awesome XXX love watching you and your family grow.
Its ok Ashley! You all did the very best for Willa and these things happen. I could tell during the video you were beating yourself up and you did great momma💜 Ben did a great job staying calm and being there for support.
I have never seen a small child Epi pen. That was pretty awesome that it walks you through administering it. You stayed SO much more calm than I would have!!!! So relieved that it ended up so well in the end.
Scary situation!! I’m a RN and a mom of a child with Anaphylactic allergies, and would encourage you to maybe work with your MD back home, so your more comfortable when you encounter this situation again. I’ve included some links that I think you will find helpful. Next time as soon as you realize she’s ingested an allergen you should be in the dingy and rushing to shore. Her reaction was so fast and significant that she could’ve need another epi within 15 min, but regardless of how many Eli’s you have to use, she should absolutely be monitored for 4-8 hours in the ER. There’s also the possibility that she could have a rebound reaction/ biphasic anaphylaxis reaction. Which is more common in kids. My daughter didn’t have it the first 2 times she had a reaction, but subsequent times she did. With the 3rd reaction we also thought we could drive her to the hospital but we ended up meeting the ambulance due to her relief after epi not seeming to as effective. She was observed for 4 hours, and sent home, but 7 hours after her initial reaction she woke up feeling the same way, and off we went back to the hospital where they kept her for 12 hours. I would suggest asking your MD for the following items to have with you. RX for an inhaler with a spacer attachment, so you can try and help her lung tissue open up. You could ask for a small travel nebulizer to keep in hand, which would ensure more of the bronco dilator medication get inhaled. Have Pepcid and liquid Benadryl on hand. If you hunt around you can get the Benadryl liquid in little convenient plastic single dose ampule’s. Have a pulse oximetry on board would be really really helpful so that you can know if her oxygen levels are dropping, and it will also tell you her heart rate. www.healthline.com/health/allergies/severe-reactions-anaphylaxis-emergency-room This is an article from Canada about a study that looked at the rate of rebounds reaction/biphasic reactions in children. globalnews.ca/news/2067512/anaphylactic-reactions-can-have-rebound-effect/ My heart feels for you guys trying to learn and navigate these situations are stressful and scary, but you guys were nice and calm, and that’s so key in the situation, but I worry that if you had waited much longer to give her meds, or head to the hospital even after giving doses of epinephrine, sometimes people die before getting to the hospital due to their airway closing, and then medical staff can’t place a tube down into their lungs to restore oxygen.
Oh my goodness you guys remained such level headed and that is awesome. I think you did good by showing this because I for one have never seen someone get in trouble so fast. Great job Mom and Dad.
i love that y’all were transparent to say that you aren’t completely knowledgeable on the subject & what could possibly happen, i mean everyone’s bodies react differently, yet y’all did an amazing job. from a nurse… sometimes epipens only buy you some time & death can be imminent following, without medical attention. broke my heart watching her struggle & you both doing your very best to manage what she was enduring. i am proud to say the least. glad it all worked out!!!
Great Job!! As a parent who brought up a child (now 19) with a severe peanut allergy, I just want to give you kudos. Been watching you since there was just two in your family at sea. Wishing you less worry and more happy adventures ahead. BTW, if you do get anyone telling you something different to do, just remember that various doctors, and even the same doctor over time has given us different advice on what to do, and the E.R. doctors almost failed us. Your instincts were spot on.
Good choice on sharing the video. So, glad everything turned out okay. There are at least 8 different types of shock that I am aware of. The way I remember them is to remember "CHAMPS RN" Cardiogenic, Hypovolemic, Anaphylactic, Metabolic, Psychogenic, Septic, Respiratory, Neurogenic. Sounds like you guys are set up for the most common things you are likely to encounter.
Well done. I’m ex ambulance and you seemed focussed and calm. Yay for epipens. While waiting for a helicopter once we wrapped ice in a damp cloth and held it on the child’s neck (after epipen given by parents). It slowed the swelling down.
I had similar type allergies as a baby until early teens. Good news is as I got older they lessened and in most cases disappeared. Happy this had a good ending. Just be vigilant and question everything she eats as I am sure you doing.
oh my god. i have developed food allergies over the past couple of years. i had my first anaphylaxis reaction this summer. it was so scary - and i'm 40, live in the city and was able to seek medical help immediately. i CANT EVEN IMAGINE what this must be like as a parent when this happens to your young child....let alone when it happens when you are on your boat in a foreign country. i cant believe how calm the two of you were able to remain during this. i know you said that it has happened a few times before, but it still must be so scary for you. kudos to you. your calm will definitely have helped to keep her calm, which is imperative. thank goodness for epi pens.
What a great reminder about allergies, many people scoff at people who have allergies not understanding how deadly it can be. We had a young lady from overseas who died from peanut allergies. She was on a beach at a place called Coral Bay, she had one bite of her partners dessert , went into anylphalactic shock and died. I'm so glad you had the stuff to treat her, and I'm glad she was OK. I think you guys do such a great job being parents on the hop, well done both of you xx
You guys are completely amazing parents! You handled that so calmly and competently! Thank you for sharing your adventures (the sailing ones as well as your personal ones). My husband and I have been following you for many years and really admire you! Keep on keeping on!!!😀
I am so taken full of admiration for you guys! You rock! You had a problem with Willa, you knew what to do, and was prepared - that is what is most important! Thank you for that amazing video!
see if the Dr will give you access to oxygen or other palliative things for comfort etc. what if she needs an ER and you’re in the middle of the ocean? You need to have your own ER on the boat. Pulse-ox etc too. Scary!! SO incredibly glad she’s ok!!! Love you guys!!! You’re amazing parents! And thank you for sharing this with us! We aren’t here just for the sailing parts - we are invested in your family too💗💗💗 I have now watched this 4 times.. please consider sharing these moments with us!! You did great!!!! Awesome job
Calm under pressure, you were both amazing. Anaphylaxis is scary even as an adult (seafood/shellfish for me), I was scared and I wasn’t even there. Willa was also amazing, kids are so resilient, great watching her run around at the end. Praying for all of you
Allergic reactions on that level must be such a drag. You're both so calm. What do you do when out on the open seas? I didn't know that sneezing was an indicator.
I am a lucky Father of 8 kids and I only have 2 words for you both - YOU ROCK!!! Your attention to detail and decision making indeed gave this episode a successful outcome (but scary)!
Am glad everything was ok . I have an unknown reaction that causes my lip to swell up really bad . I also dont have a pituitary gland so have to take a bucket of meds every day and up to 5 times a day punctually or risk potential coma / death ! 🙄 Subsequently my mum (in her 70's) banned me from buying a catamaran , lol
I have an adult son whose pituitary gland doesn't work so we can relate. Adrenal Crisis can be scary! Thank goodness for Solu-Cortef. After that, the diabetes insipidus is a difficult one because people hear diabetes and automatically think its sugar related and it's like their ears just shut off to listening about what it is and how it's treated or when it can become dangerous and what to do. Curious...were you born with no pit gland or was it something that happened later on in life?
@@Island_Times interesting. Thank you for seeing my message and answering me back. My son has Septo-optic Dysplasia and is 24. Nice to "meet" you! Hope you have a fantastic day!
You handled that beautifully. I saw you were trying to get her to take calming breaths (great idea!), which is great for toddlers to learn for a host of reasons. One fun thing our daycare taught us that might be helpful is to get them to hold up a finger to your mouth and say ‘Smell the flower!’ *big breath in nose* and then ‘Blow out the candle!’ *big breath out mouth*. It’s a fun activity for them to pretend and learns proper big breaths. Just thought I’d share the tip. But seriously, you both did amazing with that!
So glad that Willa is recovering. It's really hard to be parents and you both are such a wonderful mum and dad! Wishing you a happy Mother's Day Ash. Bri, TopHat 25', Oz
Thank you for showing Willa's reaction because I think it is important for people to actually see what it looks like. My young son has a friend with a peanut allergy and he is over at our house a lot. I've often wondered what I'd do if I accidentally served him something with traces of peanut in it. Since none of my kids have allergies I've never witnessed a reaction before. Much love to you guys!
This is only the second video of yours I've ever watched. The video before showed up in my suggested feed and because of this video I just subscribed. I watched this while sitting next to my 17 month old who has no known allergies and cried. I could only imagine. I feel for you guys. Thank you for sharing such a personal moment, it reminded me to be grateful for the little things. ❤
Wow! It’s a good thing you were aware of Willa’s allergies and were prepared. That’s the first time I’ve seen the epipens that give you instructions. Good save you guys!
Wow. 1 mistake can be costly but well done on the quick response. I see and am glad to see so much support from everyone. I have 3 kids. My daughter has a wheat allergy. We, my wife and I, have all made "those" mistakes and like you guys, learned from them. Lots of love and thanks for keeping it real.
Unthinkable situation, but your calm, decisive actions are an example for everyone to follow for any emergency. Thanks for showing. I've never seen an anaphylactic event before so this is an eye opener for me personally.
You guys are doing great with your lifestyle! Keep living the way you want and know that most of us watching think you’re awesome people and now parents too. Pretty good sailors as well. Lol! Poor Willa! Glad you were prepared.
wow, who figured, glad she is ok. You did and made the right choice. I'll keep an eye on more of my food. Please don't stop showing this. This is what boaters need to know before. I have not seen any one showing these things and this episode is great. Thanks
Wow....I give you credit. You stayed so calm on the outside, I'm sure that wasn't the case on the inside. Thank you for sharing as I don't think people in general understand how life threatening an allergy can be. As a dad..soon to be grandfather...I was close to tears for Willa. But I just knew she would be OK because you were prepared. Stay safe and well....sending ❤ from Sidney BC.
Another allergy kid parent here: You guys did great and she took that AUVI-Q like a champ! From our numerous ER visits with our little one, we give them Benadryl and Pepcid as well hoping to avoid the epi. Even at a young age medical staff gave us the dosing amount for Benadryl. Just something to maybe discuss with your medical provider. We’re about 50/50 avoiding having to use the epi after an exposure. Good luck!
Great job guys. Registered nurse here from Darwin, Australia. My only advise would be plan to give the epipen, then get to Emergency department. Sometimes they can get secondary reactions. The symptom you need to be wary of is stridor. Stridor is the high pitch wheeze, it is the sound the airways make before closing. You guys did an incredible job, stay calm, act fast, and have ample stock of the epipens. Those epipen's you have are very cool, never seen them with voice prompts.
You guys are amazing. As a parent of 3 I can’t imagine how scary this was going through this on a boat in a foreign country. This is why i want my nurse wife to get her wilderness paramedic license when we take this plunge after our kids are old enough.
I am so pleased you decided to share this. It’s important for anyone to know - even if you are not the one with an allergy. Poor little Willa not even knowing what was going on. I’m so happy she is ok. Scary stuff!
This is an example of VERY good parenting. You awareness and quick action mixed with preparation saved her life. I’m proud of you guys.
Facts
Agreed... Parents should know their kids... Agreed that their quick action saved Willa... Thankfully, they had the med... Imagine, what if they were in the middle of the ocean and this happened!! God bless the family...
Parenting does not come with a manual. Y'all did what was right and in a timely manner. Good job!

I have never seen a small child Epi pen. That was pretty awesome that it walks you through administering it. You stayed SO much more calm than I would have!!!! So relieved that it ended up so well in the end.
EpiPen is a brand name. Allerject is the name of the one that talks.
@@TracyKMainwaring Thanks.
Have a pulse oximetry on board would be really really helpful so that you can know if her oxygen levels are dropping, and it will also tell you her heart rate.
www.healthline.com/health/allergies/severe-reactions-anaphylaxis-emergency-room
This is an article from Canada about a study that looked at the rate of rebounds reaction/biphasic reactions in children.

My heart feels for you guys trying to learn and navigate these situations are stressful and scary, but you guys were nice and calm, and that’s so key in the situation, but I worry that if you had waited much longer to give her meds, or head to the hospital even after giving doses of epinephrine, sometimes people die before getting to the hospital due to their airway closing, and then medical staff can’t place a tube down into their lungs to restore oxygen.
that you stayed so Calm during the whole time is amazing,
you guys are amazing thanks for sharing, its a big eye opener.
Love and Peace from Sweden
Oh my goodness you guys remained such level headed and that is awesome. I think you did good by showing this because I for one have never seen someone get in trouble so fast. Great job Mom and Dad.
So glad she’s ok, can’t imagine the stress xxx
i love that y’all were transparent to say that you aren’t completely knowledgeable on the subject & what could possibly happen, i mean everyone’s bodies react differently, yet y’all did an amazing job. from a nurse… sometimes epipens only buy you some time & death can be imminent following, without medical attention. broke my heart watching her struggle & you both doing your very best to manage what she was enduring. i am proud to say the least. glad it all worked out!!!
Bloody scary, bloody well handled and bloody good advice! 🥰
Sharing this is exactly the right thing to do. Having the pen on board did its job when needed thanks for the video
OH GAWD! So proud of you guys for how you handled it, you're amazing, you got this.
You guys are completely amazing parents! You handled that so calmly and competently! Thank you for sharing your adventures (the sailing ones as well as your personal ones). My husband and I have been following you for many years and really admire you! Keep on keeping on!!!😀
Hart breaking! Cudo’s to both of you for staying so calm and collected!
It's a common on. Coughing is also another sign too.
Subsequently my mum (in her 70's) banned me from buying a catamaran , lol
I have an adult son whose pituitary gland doesn't work so we can relate. Adrenal Crisis can be scary! Thank goodness for Solu-Cortef. After that, the diabetes insipidus is a difficult one because people hear diabetes and automatically think its sugar related and it's like their ears just shut off to listening about what it is and how it's treated or when it can become dangerous and what to do. Curious...were you born with no pit gland or was it something that happened later on in life?
@@michellelocken1462 I had a birth defect "Rathkes Cleft Cyst" it slowly killed my pituitary off .
@@Island_Times interesting. Thank you for seeing my message and answering me back. My son has Septo-optic Dysplasia and is 24. Nice to "meet" you! Hope you have a fantastic day!
Preparation not everything - but the most important start of everything else. Well done.
Thank you for posting this.
Thank you for being prepared.
Happy Mother's day
Glad the cutie pie Willa was okay. You guys are a great team and stayed calm.
Wishing you a happy Mother's Day Ash.

yes VERY WELL DONE Guys.....and thank YOU for getting this info OUT there ! .... OnWard.....
Thankyou Ben and Ashley ,be well .cheers from Alberta.
A great example of the importance of being prepared, thanks for sharing.
Glad the little ones OK, way to be prepared And maintain control! Very well done.
You did not delay- excellent. 🥰 Hope she’s feeling better… anaphylaxis is terrifying.
You guys ROCK!!! Calm, cool and collected. Way to go mom and dad. So glad your amazing girl is alright! Thanks for sharing so openly.
I've never seen an anaphylactic event before so this is an eye opener for me personally.
crazy so glad both of you know what was going on with Willa. Excellent Decision to do the epi pen
Wow! Thanks for sharing! Happy Mother’s Day!
You guys are doing great with your lifestyle! Keep living the way you want and know that most of us watching think you’re awesome people and now parents too. Pretty good sailors as well. Lol! Poor Willa! Glad you were prepared.
So glad that Ella is ok. We feel your pain and anxiety. Our daughter had a sever bee allergy and had an EpiPen with us constantly.
wow, who figured, glad she is ok. You did and made the right choice. I'll keep an eye on more of my food. Please don't stop showing this. This is what boaters need to know before. I have not seen any one showing these things and this episode is great. Thanks
Hello from Siesta Key Florida
That was hard to watch. She's one tuff little girl.
Happy mother's day.
You guys handled that like pros
You guys were so very calm! Glad Willow is ok!
You guys are amazing. As a parent of 3 I can’t imagine how scary this was going through this on a boat in a foreign country. This is why i want my nurse wife to get her wilderness paramedic license when we take this plunge after our kids are old enough.
You should also do a course too. You never know if you are needed to do the thing to save someone.
@@listay1 yeah, that would be the plan. 2 is 1 and 1 is none.
Very well done. Along with education for folks in the same situation on a boat. Great job.
I am so pleased you decided to share this. It’s important for anyone to know - even if you are not the one with an allergy. Poor little Willa not even knowing what was going on. I’m so happy she is ok. Scary stuff!
So glad Willa is ok. Made me cry watching. Great job handling the situation. Happy Mother’s Day Ashley 💕
I to am a parent and what you guys did for Willa was brilliant, do not sell yourselves short, you were both on it . . . go Willa go !
