One thing she never commented on, was when the hedgehog briefly lost his wrapped package of jam. It makes me feel that that represents his comfort zone. And just because you step out of your everyday comfort zone, doesn't mean that it is lost to you. It is still there, and while change and new experiences can be both scary and good.....your comfort zone of the familiar can still exist. Very beautiful story.
This is a beautiful explanation of losing something, but realizing it is still there, because in the end, the hedgehog left the fog, but still he knew that the creatures he met are not gone but are still in there somewhere.. Maybe he learned that things in the fog, though not seen are still there.. It changed his mindset completely, widened his world and made him empathize the creatures in the fog rather than fear them..
I am half Russian half Dutch. Born in the USSR. Era of stagnation under Brezhnev is viewed by most as the most prosperous, quite and happy time of all Soviet rule. The images with empty shops is from the 80s era -- era of Perestroika and change.

And the owl is probably the anxiety. Glasnost was what did USSR in , it broke the world/reality/paradigm people lived and that was enough to bring down the whole system, China didn't make that mistake and held strong thanks to Deng and the Tiananmen square massacre , it sacrificed a few for the good of a billion , in the west this is blasphemy but it is the truth.

And how true friendship is still more important than anything else. But somehow jerry-rigging it to political situation is... it's just amazing feat of stupidity. How in blazes did you even achieve that? How did you came to such conclusion? Have you tried to uncouple yourself from political and look at this just from existential point of view? I honestly hope that this will inspire you to redo this review and make it free from politics. I believe it will only benefit from that. Not sure about that. Wikipedia gives the date as 1975. I don't think there is any way this film technically could have been made in the 1930's to look the way it does.
