    Peter, I am impressed by your awareness that your fans/students include a wide age range of people (as evidenced by this video). You think outside the standard training box, from a nostalgia focus all the way to post modern. It takes a clever, intelligent vision to hit all the right video/photography notes ... and you do it on a regular basic. You set a high mark my friend.

    • @brentthomasaustin
      @brentthomasaustin 5 років тому

      This guy is 100% fake. Everything he does screams generic. You don't fake a super 8 look. You shoot film. None of the super 8 look was replicated at all. Organic film grain can't be simulated. You shoot film. Maybe the feel of the 80's home movies was replicated, but film is an entirely different subject to talk about.

      yes I think that's the definition of "kitsch". still fun though! . It makes me appreciate having started with real film (16, S16 and 35mm) and lived through the "digital revolution"

      yeah their quite the dumbasses. lol im kidding, trends come back, and when they do, its interesting to mix styles. back in the days they did film only. now you have both. if you can use technology correctly, if you apply thought into whats worth being created or not. it can be benificial

      Same things happens in video games. Even though we have the possibility to create amazing, graphically-stunning 3d worlds, some of us still like to create and/or play 2d games in retro style. Modern tech doesn't mean we must do stuff in modern way, it just means that now we have a choice to create different styles for different people

    Cool effect, well explained!
    If you don't mind me nickpicking as someone who collects home made 8mm films:
    The dark edges are more video-esque, you need more of a slight roundness with some vignetting to the edges for 8mm film.
    Also no colour noise! That's a digital thing :).
    But hey, changing these things really is easy enough to not bother explaining them anyway, so this is close enough!

    • @_Sooty_
      @_Sooty_ 5 років тому

      That’s interesting you guys say that super 8 film is quite expensive. I accidentally bought a D8 camera thinking it was super 8 when I was starting out on film a couple of years ago and honestly I’d stick with D8 any day. Camera itself was £5 or so and the film I can find for £10 or so from the right film retailer. I went a step forward and got my own reversal developing kit and before you know it you’ve got a whole kit together for 8mm film. If you’re wondering as well, I bought a splicer from Ukraine that splits the film itself from 16mm(D8) down to its individual 8mm, and I’d still advise anyone at any age to try to use film, not for everything but it is incredibly useful, especially to mess up your exposures and keep testing really. Hope you guys get into film :)

    Really good vid! The problem I see in your super 8 mm vintage 4:3 vibe is that it feels forced... not very spontaneous. It looks good but it’s like you filmed it because it look like this. I think when you film something and just get the crop and the filter on top of it (without planning) it would look waaayyyy beter

    • @stevemulcahy5014
      @stevemulcahy5014 5 років тому

      If you watch some old home movies, they do look and feel contrived like that. Think about the era, the cameras were a novelty and something people weren’t used to. Invariably the dad would be the one recording, so mum and the kids would play to the camera.
      If Peter just stuck those effects on his regular footage, it’d just look like he wanted to make his video look a bit like super8 footage.

    • @JBoeveNL
      @JBoeveNL 5 років тому

      Yess i know that it’s shaky and stuff but as i said. Because he ‘wanted’ to create this look (and it actually looks really good) it feels forced to do it. Just like you saw in the vid.
      Maybe he could sometimes say when he is on a shoot “i’m going to shoot differently then normal” but not with 8mm in his mind. And when he is editing maybe thinking to make it 8mm because it fits well in how he shot that vid.
      Do you now what i mean?
      Maybe we do not share the same opinion but that doesn’t matter. It’s just how this 8mm vid gave me that ‘forced’ feeling

    Hey Pete, May I call you Pete, Pete? I love your shinning happy face. Just dropping a line from ICT to let you know that I wasn’t t sold, I wanted to be, but two things were glaring at me, kicking me in the balls per say, telling me this wasn’t real, not even close to being real. #1, there was no flickering, just faded, this look needs flicker to sell it. #2, in conjunction with #1, your audio had 2 things wrong, a: the “clicking” noise in the background needs to go in time with the flickering, oh wait, there was no flickering, & b: the “clicking” was too loud, making is sound fake. Fix these 2 things & you will have a winner. And for some strange reason, I feel like Jesus, right before the first nail, cringing... oh well. PS, this is not being mean, just constructive criticism. Also, heavy vignetting would have helped as well... thanks again for your content!

    Hey Pete, just wanted to let you know how much of an inspiration you are to me 😊 I’m going to college to help me be better at shooting videos so I can some day travel the world vlogging and doing photography. And you are my biggest inspiration towards this!

    That’s a gold tip abt the depth of field. I tried achieving this look but the shallow depth of field I had gave it away.

    Awesome effect! I actually just inherited a Bell & Howell 8mm film camera that I wanted to shoot with to see how it turned out! Thanks as always Peter!
