Finally. If you're wondering where this video was supposed to be - part of is down once more to gross underestimation of the production time, but a lot was to do with constant new discoveries I kept making throughout its production. Such as the "secret" Cool Wall film in S02E05 or the final addition (as you might be able to tell from the heightened audio quality Adobe's Enhance V2 provides), which was a skit centred around Richard Hammond's Vampire crash, that was created either for a programme or advertising campaign that aired on BBC Four in late 2006. Every time this happened, I had to go back to square one and re-do a lot of what was already made. This cost me hours, which turned into days and eventually weeks. The final render was also a real pain. Coming into this project, I knew there'd be a lot of cars. I initially projected 180 - 210, accounting for a good 50 or so that were never shown on screen. I never imagined in a million years they placed close to 400 on the wall. Granted, some of this is subjective; whether you'd consider the individual years or trim levels of the Porsche 911, Renault Mégane or Vauxhall Astra as separate inclusions or the same, for instance. But when you miss a car, the production time doesn't double - it EXPONENTIALLY multiplies. Because what that meant was with every car I missed the first, second, third or ninth time around, I had to identify what it was, find the source picture (which sometimes took hours), crop it to 16:9 or a similar aspect ratio (which included expanding some, like Hammond's Porsche and the Piaggio Ape with outpainting), place it on the timeline, place its picture on the large Cool Wall image I made for this video, give it the correct number, and then source the footage (or best shot that exists of that car). In other news, I am greatly disappointed over the fact my Hammond video appears to have stalled at 100,000 views given the amount of time, effort, and passion I put into it, but I chalk this down due to two things. First is no doubt a result of Porter's unsavoury comments from last year turning casual fans off my content. Again, there is nothing more for me to add in this department other than what has already been said. If you think talking about a TV show watched by 350 million people should be gatekept only to those who worked on it due to getting one or two inconsequential facts wrong based on the evidence in front of me, then I'm fine with that. I will just try and keep Alex Mills' and FinalGear's memory alive however I can, for as long as I can, to prevent large parts of Top Gear's whole story from being overwritten by revisionists and trolls. The second is due to the waning appeal of Top Gear caused by its sudden end two years ago, and more directly by comments and actions from at least two of the three hosts in the last few months. Truth be told, I don't care. The way I see it, appreciation of pop culture is being overtaken by a clique of self-appointed arbiters who are physically incapable of separating art from artist, and attack anyone who chooses to ignore the outside world. From the less-than-savoury comments Clarkson and the other hosts made as far back as Series 1 onwards, to me there was going to be a fan revolt against Top Gear sooner or later. You're weak if you let other people decide what you enjoy. Jezza himself could literally place a hex on my bloodline and it wouldn't affect my enjoyment of the programme. With that said, thank you all so much for 45,000 subs! Let's try and get to 50 next!
Another great video, and clearly a mammoth effort on something I (and many others) have been curious about for years. With the closing of the Beaulieu exhibit, I'd love to see a video chronicling it's history, contents, and the BBC's scrapping policy, whenever you find the time.
1:43:44 That’s not true. The precursor to the modern-day tier list actually started with ranking characters in the video game Super Smash Brothers which came out way before the revived Top Gear.
its funny he spent all that time doing it when the rear taillight and 3/4 design even in the lower quality video is so obviously the 9-3 Kombi. not sure why he spent so long doing that
1:19:50 Not sure if you are aware of this but Top Gear released an official Cool Wall App back in 2009, which had its own original cool wall and allowed users to make their own. This might be an alternative reason why the Mitsubishi Evo X is both in Uncool and Sub-Zero, because the app lists the Evo being uncool "if you're a bloke" and sub-zero "if you're a girl".
35:54 The Ken connection wasn’t about those who would drive it but because of the man who designed it; Ken Okuyama, a man who designed several legendary cars for Pininfarina, including the original Honda NSX and the Ferrari Enzo.
Also at the time, Ken Livingstone was leader of the Greater London Council and in charge of transport policies, and the Top Gear hosts used to deride his decisions on a regular basis. I agree with Gearknob saying Ken Miles is among the coolest of Kens. Along with former world heavyweight champ Ken Norton
1:06:25 Jeremy joked that the Saab 9-5 facelift had "Dame Edna Everage's Glasses". Because of this joke Saab fans refer to that model as the Dame Edna to this day!
The cool wall may not exist anymore but if I had to take a stab at it, today’s cool wall would probably have a seriously uncool section as big as the entire original cool wall
I met the guy who owns the original cool wall in 2020, and he showed it to me. It was in the far corner of a warehouse filled with vintage motorcycles. Felt very apt!
Never understood why they chose to have a bunch of cars already on the wall when the segment began and never elaborated, rather than start with an empty wall.
Those were likely put up and filmed during previous episodes that were cut out in post because they had to fit the episodes within a certain length of time for television.
Could be to help the audience get a rough initial idea of what is considered cool or not e.g. European hatchbacks are generally considered cool, mad sports cars are uncool
Same! I watched so many TG reruns on Dave. Clarkson saying 'Don't worry this ain't a repeat on Dave we are back!' was so funny to me back in the day as well.
Me too! I The 9-3 shape is extremely distinct and memorable. My fiancé listened to me moan about how easy it is to tell it's a 9-3 because of the silhouette he laughed and said 'I haven't heard you go this car bore since the rant on how misunderstood the Triumph Stag is' 😂

This video is worthy of going in the fridge. Slight correction 1:33:49 you can sort of count the range rover as going in sub zero as you can see in the clip online Clarkson putting it on the board before going to deal with Hammond
i opened this notification thinking "oh man itll probably be like a 25 minute video about the rules" nope, 2 hour video, on just the cool wall, not disappointed 🍿🍿🍿
Yikes! You can see the poor mid-2000’s editing in that skit. They very clearly took footage from the episode and then superimposed the image of the Vampire in reference to Richard’s crash onto it, with just a bit of audio augmentation.
It isn't edited really well, but not that badly for late 2000's TV. I'm sure that it was a show that lightly edited clips of shows on the BBC to try and make it funnier. Does seem a bit dark for a BBC 4 comedy though.
56:09 the lady arguing about the Audi TT sums up the Cool Wall perfectly. I was waiting for her 😂😂 I remember her saying something absolutely nerdy and anorak AF about the car having “great road holding” etc etc. And the minute she starts rabbiting on about that, whatever coolness the car had just quickly falls away. Not to mention she just doesn’t look like she would drive a cool car anyway.
1:07:38 I think this video was edited from some TopGear clip including same episode of cool wall F150 lightning and Boxster therefore, this is not true. But it will likely to made by fan made or BBC four Also behind the vampire were classic car like M1 and Mini 356… Which did not appear in cool wall.
Among the countless other thoughts that could be said about the placements on the cool wall, I think it's absolutely hilarious how all of their articles warn against the Audi TT being a "fashion car" that was incredibly cool at first but slowly became lame, only for them to rank the Mini Cooper as a sub-zero car in the exact same time period when, arguably, it has suffered the exact same fate since then.
I know where one of the cool walls are - a motorbike dealer not too far from Guildford has one. Said he snapped it up after the end of Top Gear 2015, managed to get a photo taken with it when I collected my Motocompo end of 2020
I’ve seen it too. I remember the warehouse containing Jacques Villeneuve’s Williams F1 scooter, among other two-wheel machines. Was a few years ago now. Even if it may be the live show wall, it’s still pretty cool!
Great video as always and extremely detailed. However, I noticed one mistake. At 17:30 you mention that the photograph on the Cool Wall is a Bristol 412 (1975-1986 with variants made until 1994), when It looks to be a Bristol Blenheim (1994-2011) instead. The 412 is a targa-top convertible designed by Zagato while the Blenheim is the last of the classic Bristol 2-door grand tourers, being an updated version of the 603, which itself was the successor to the 411 from the 1960s. Both automobiles have versions of Chrysler V8 engines, are hand-built British cars with a fascinating heritage, are rather rare, and in my opinion, very cool (I would say sub-zero).
41:47 It’s a theme park photo, it looks like Jason Dawe on the rollercoaster Avalanche at Blackpool pleasure Beach. Yeah nothing to do with cars I just thought I’d pitch in 😂
Hey mate! I found your 4k image of the recreated wall, and regarding the Hyundai Coupe, you put a red one in the "cool" section, which is what I remembered, but in the episode 6 of season 1, as written on your wall, they put a grey Coupe in the "uncool" section. I believe they moved it to the cool section later on, replacing the picture with one from the red Coupe they tested in episode 3 of season 2, but I couldn't find when they do that. Any idea? Thanks a lot for your amazing work, Arthur
I think what a lot of viewers of the show didn’t quite understand is that the wall was to judge how cool a car was from the perspective of people who ARE NOT interested in cars. For instance, this is why things like the Ferrari Enzo and the Lamborghini Murcielago SV went down in the Uncool section. Basically, if you drive one of those around in public, you look like you’re showing off.
54:30 actually the car is moved to sub-zero by the green shirt guy, following Clarkson's request, right after the white shirt guy puts it in uncool, while nobody is paying attention. You can see it in camera during the scene.
Something which you might have overlooked when cars mysteriously vanished from the board is that the audience would take them down. This was confirmed by James on drivetribe
What about picture of Toyota Yaris Verso that Clarkson holds in his hand at 17:36? But what an amazing work, thank you very much for this treat. Please keep doing great videos like this. EDIT: Now I see you discuss Toyota Yaris Verso at 1:39:04.
"oh boy a video about one of my favorite gimmicks from one of my favorite shows but I doubt a video on the Cool Wall could really have enough content for..................... TWO HOURS?" g-fucken-g dude
Amazing video!! Who knew the Abarth 500 would end as one of the coolest cars in the UK haha! Also shoutout to Fernando Alonso. Cool guy as it turns out…

That moment when you learn that your car was on considered uncool from day zero.
you know youre making fantastic content when the only complaint is there isn't more!
Thank you for this video, tried googling everything I could on this years ago, came up with little info
Let us all thank GearKnob for his hard work!

It’s a theme park photo, it looks like Jason Dawe on the rollercoaster Avalanche at Blackpool pleasure Beach. Yeah nothing to do with cars I just thought I’d pitch in 😂
THIS IS THE BEST TOP FEAR FAN CHANNEL
100%
im thrilled by that
Any idea?
Thanks a lot for your amazing work,
Arthur
I had a cool wall that was given out in Top Gear Magazine in 2012
This is like the og of those tierlist streams streamers do.
I always loved the logic that a Skyline couldn't be cool because Clarkson assumed people hated Nissans and called them Datsuns
Something which you might have overlooked when cars mysteriously vanished from the board is that the audience would take them down. This was confirmed by James on drivetribe
I feel like that dragster clip has massive implications for their dynamic, and most people will just gloss over it. The fuck?
59:33 I spend 40 seconds yelling “It’s a Saab 9-3!”
What about picture of Toyota Yaris Verso that Clarkson holds in his hand at 17:36?
But what an amazing work, thank you very much for this treat. Please keep doing great videos like this.
EDIT: Now I see you discuss Toyota Yaris Verso at 1:39:04.
Still wild to me how much tv history is lost out of simple spite. And from friends of Savile no less.
What a day to be alive!
"oh boy a video about one of my favorite gimmicks from one of my favorite shows but I doubt a video on the Cool Wall could really have enough content for..................... TWO HOURS?"
g-fucken-g dude
where can i watch that fiat 500 clip on the cool wall and the abarth 500?
This is awesome!!! Really top work!
This is like the ultimate version of the subreddit r/whatisthiscar.
Amazing video!! Who knew the Abarth 500 would end as one of the coolest cars in the UK haha!
Also shoutout to Fernando Alonso. Cool guy as it turns out…
Really wanna see the footage of that and the normal 500, but can’t find it anywhere
cool video but... NO CHAPTERS?! whyyyy
This video is fucking great. Excellent work man.
All this work on a video and such, but no link to a listing of the final position of each car?
58:35 No joke, my first thought was the Saab 9-3 Wagon.
Awesome video!
Fnatic only made it with blameF going mega; not sure if he can keep up that form
The viper’s exhaust caught the body on fire when Clarkson was test driving it - That’s why it was in uncool
I just wanna know when you talk about the db9 fridge! When is that!
