Tyler singing ‘taking my time on the ride’ reminds me of what the Buddha says ‘The journey is the way’, in other words taking your time to wander the way without falling into the extremes or dashing to the end too quickly is what life is all about. Tyler understands this is the best idea, but is struggling to do so.
I agree with you Stuart that the track represent the idea of living your life for yourself versus other people. I think he feels the pressure of the demands of others whom he feels responsible for. However, he loves these people and would like to think he’d protect them at all costs, even if it means him loosing himself or his life in the process; but he doesn’t know if he could or would in reality be that man or live up to that ideal. This makes him feel lesser or weaker which bothers him. This is about Tyler’s perception of himself versus how others perceive him. Maybe because he thinks others see him as strong, but inside he knows he struggles everyday and the strain of keeping up the appearance of control is playing over and over in his mind and making him depressed or desperate. Thus he feels unstable and falling through the space in his mind as he shuts down. That’s why he calls out for help, but it’s in the background of the lyrics, which to me is saying he’s scared to attract attention and knows his asking for help will mean he’ll be questioned. I think he doesn’t necessarily know if he should want help or indeed who will answer; or if those who love him will give him time and
Space to process his thoughts and step back from the fray. I think he realises if he gets help he’ll gain control and grow as a result, thus he’ll be able to shine in the light again, with his sunglasses on to protect him from too much ‘light and scrutiny. Unlike when he wore them in the dark to hide away and fade into the background and literally blur his face.

Great analysis. For me, the bright light hurting their eyes represent how sometimes you've become so comfortable when you're depressed, in the dark, that the first sign of light can be daunting and overwhelming. You almost want to return to the shadows because you're already down and the thought of potentially falling again is scary. And when they put on the sunglasses, it's a way for them to manage it. You can't rush the mental healing process and need some help along the way.

I love that they put each others sunglasses on, like they are there to look out for each other.

I 100% agree that the dark can become comfortable. Being depressed was all I knew once. It was home. I knew how it worked and what to do with my head. My first stumbling steps into happiness were honestly frightening.

I love your analysis of this, it was so interesting! I really connected to what you were saying about the light and dark in the video. The way they play with it in video and the progression through extremes (too dark and too bright) all the way to a middle ground is really great. My favorite part is when they put the sunglasses on each other (you can tell by the hands that Josh is helping Tyler and Tyler is helping Josh), and to me it represents the positive power of having people being there for you and accepting help.

loves hearing your thoughts, i definitely resonate with the feeling of getting stuck in your thoughts and just wishing i could switch my brain off for a while.
Apparently the chorus was originally 'taking my time on my rhyme' but Tyler's (singer) wife told him 'ride' sounded better.
Tyler has talked in interviews before about how he thinks it's easy to say you'd take a bullet for your family but it's harder to try to be the best brother/son or whatever and make the decision to love and look out for your family each day. I find this especially relatable with my family like I love them so much and miss them so much when I'm away and definitely think I would die for them but then when I'm with them I can get annoyed with them easily or I don't feel like calling them and talking to them even when they want me to, super contradictory!

I can relate to that, and I’m sure a lot of people can, for sure. Thanks for sharing. I think Tyler’s wife improved the song!

I think a couple people might have mentioned it but dark vs light/night vs day is a very common theme in twenty one pilots, Ode to sleep is a good example of this. With Tyler singing a lot about how night/dark brings on the pain and bad thoughts while day brings relief. Good luck with your journey, your reactions are really interesting and informative ❤

Great job as always. Tyler is a very clever writer and there's usually at least two layers of meaning to his lyrics so I'll outline another interpretation which relates to Tyler's (and Josh's faith). If this isn't something appropriate for your channel, just let me know, I understand. I'll put in a disclaimer here, I'm not a practicing Christian myself.
Sometimes when Tyler says 'sun' he also means 'Son' as in Son of God - Jesus - who also describes Himself as being 'the light' and a place to find peace. So the having 'pieces of peace in the sun/Son's peace of mind' takes on a different meaning. As does the idea of 'falling' and being 'fallen'. Tyler has for a long time struggled with feeling worthy in of God's love and has also struggled with doubt, as many do. These are recurrent themes in their songs. An expression when people stop practicising their faith of any kind is that they 'fell away' from it and there is actually a song on an older album called Fall Away. Just another perspective on the song.

I love your content so much. I love how you keep it real and not just do stuff for the views or money. There is one song that has actually made me cry and I would love for you to react to it. It is called the last night by skillet. Keep doing what you are doing ❤

I really like your analysis on 21 pilots songs and I'm constantly amazed by how deep their lyrics and MV are. I think "my blood" from 21pilots is very interesting too and I believe that's related to psychology stuffs. It would be great if you could make a video about it!! Many thanks, Cheers!

Hi can you please react to Breathe by Lee Hi, it’s in Korean so I recommend a lyric video. It was written by another idol Jonghyun who later on took his own life. It’s very emotional but very good. Love your reactions!!
