It quiet easy picking a bladesmith out of a crowd. There arm is always missing hair. Also easy to notice which hand is there Dominate. (Right handed shaves left arm, and Vice versa)
Have used the twine with a wood core and super glue to make a sheath for a primitive knife I made which worked out really well, a handle is the next plan to do something similar with
you know, that handle really came together well in the end. Looks good. I tried something similar with shemagh scarf a few years ago and it did not turn out well at all!! Lol. On the plus side I still have the fiberglass resin from that project, so I may take swing at this for a little hunter integral I have in the works.
I've been thinking about other ways you could have accomplished the handle, but concluded that to get the effect you were looking for you had to do it that way. My temptation would have been to cast the twine in resin off the tang, then slice it in half and proceed with scales, but with a hidden tang that's always a pain.
Cool take on a micarta handle. You could do some realy cool wraps that way. Those T shirts would be even cooler if you took away the bright background (too much white) and have the writing ligjter so it pops from the black bacground. Or even just curve the top of the background so it resembles smokey effect or steam from the forge rather than a big square print, that wood look realy cool.
I used a similar Jute/epoxy process for making a bamboo bike, the one recommendation I have is to wrap your wet handle tightly with a tape (electrical or duct tape for instance) this will compact the wrap, and give you a tighter finish, it would also likely have avoided the bolster gap. Perhaps doing the handle in two passes - tight wrap, dry, sand then wrap, dry, sand to final dimension might be easier/better....I don't know.
I had never thought of twine as a handle. I finally have a way to handle my first knife, a BBQ knife concept with a leaf loop “pommel”. The tang size is too small for drilling and scales and I’ve been delaying as I figured any further progress would take it to ruin.
Parks 50 is designed to be close to a water quench. The problem with water is it's an uneven quench due to the vapor jacket which can lease to warping. Thin cross sections like knives will harden fully in Parks 50, and it's common practice for the reasons mentioned.
I loved this one a joy to see you create these awesome blades I don't know why but integral blades always feel 'wrong' in my hand. this one looks wonderful though
Whoa!!! you were on forged in fire??? what season, what EP? I swear I have watched every episode and on the bible, I didn't see you. Please let me know so I can look it up and watch! Thanks!
Problem with fiberglass resin is that it breaks down fairly quickly in sunlight uv rays, it needs something to block the sun, boats use gel coat, but, its to soft for a durable finish on a handle.
Incredible!!! Just recently found your channel. Quite impressed with your work, and the quality just impressive. I'm just getting involved in forging. I built a forge from an old propane barbecue (stainless steel)purchased a second hand post vise and a harbor freight hammer. T best thing is that my beloved wife gave me an anvil last Christmas ( NOT harbor freight). I have a qestion that I hope you will answer. If you have a means of contact other than this site, it would probably be more convenient/ helpful. Thank you.
Well part of that is probably editing to show the actual forging, in this case the starting piece of steel was pretty thick so it did stay hot longer. As you practice you'll be able to get more forging done in the same heat
If you’re looking for any ideas for integral bolsters check out AlexandreBigunas channel. He does a lot of integral guards/bolsters and makes some of the most beautiful knives I’ve ever seen 👍
Jute twine...really? You made a really nice integral kitchen knife and used a terrible material for the handle! Why? I would stick to using a much better handle material to complement the knife.
You get only two pieces of material to make a knife: What are they?
Alloy steel and wood I think but I'm a noob to forging

wow i wasnt expecting the twine to look that good after finishing really cool

Three, counting glue... NICE!
The twine looks beautiful ❤
That turned out really nice!
That handle turned out amazing really wasnt expecting the result
What a lovely knife!!!
Very Cool!! Love the handle
Man, that handle came out great! Good work fighting some adversity. Cheers sir
Thanks man I appreciate it
That gap would have been a fantastic place for a different color spacer. Just a thought. Love the knfe, by the way. Edited for spelling
I like the way the handle turned out!
Excellent knife quality Happy Labor Day, hugs and blessings to you and your family from Buenos Aires Argentina

Neat idea!
Another awesome blade! It all turned out amazing! As several others have said the handle turned out way cooler than I expected! Thanks again Elijah!
Great work. Steel,twine,and glue = 3
Really like the way the jute handle came out, just the photos show amazing detail, and of course the blade is typical gorgeous! Great looking knife!
Wow. That turned out great. Love the finished handle. Who would have thought.
That’s not a knife that’s a piece of art ❤
Thank you sir
The handle looks like a low-res rope texture out of an old ps2 game 😍

that's a good-looking handle. I really like the exposed tang at the end too.
absolutely terrific knife!!
Mighty fine looking knife! Thanks!
Really cool! I use W1 for EDC spikes, although I harden it in water heated to almost boiling
Nice!!
That jute twine! Absolutely love it

Nice and sturdy knife, well done man
Thanks for watching

Nice knife, I wonder if a gold wire insert would work in that gap. 🤷♂️
Great job.
I really like the idea of using jute for a handle and it looks really nice. Overall...👍👍 really nice!
Beautiful Knife!!! I love how simple the handle is, yet it fits this knife so well. Great job!!
Another great video 🤜🤛
Thank you sir
“As the W1 designation would suggest, it is a water hardening steel.” 3:30 So I guess I missed why you hardened using Parks 50 instead of water.
Parks 50 is designed to be close to a water quench. The problem with water is it's an uneven quench due to the vapor jacket which can lease to warping. Thin cross sections like knives will harden fully in Parks 50, and it's common practice for the reasons mentioned.
Very nice build, enjoyed.
Thanks Randy
The handle on that knife looks really good, not a fan on the blade design, but all in all really good.
It make good hamons too.
I loved this one
a joy to see you create these awesome blades
I don't know why but integral blades always feel 'wrong' in my hand. this one looks wonderful though
I watched it, congratulations!
I think that it turned out awesome great job
As much as they say it's a lie, but imagine the work and the beautiful images for you to watch!
Absolutely stunning wow
Thanks!!
Use all your old Damascus billet cutoffs to make a new billet
Beautiful blade and a very cool and unique handle. Subbed!
Thank you

What was used to polish the handle?

Would putting vaseline on the tang then wrapping it/ gluing it make it easier to sand later on 🤔🤔
What episode were you on?? I love to see ya on forged in fire.
NM season 6 E8!!
That handle turned out really cool! Also what style of kitchen knife is that? Looks like a neat little slicer/chopper for veggies.
what episode of forged in fire were u on?

Slower setting resins shrink less.
That handle looks really great. I was not expecting that finished appearance.
What season were you on Forged in Fire? I need to check that out.
Thanks! S6 E8
That came out awesome, well done, any reason for using fibre glass resin compared to doing the same thing with the likes of Gflex or similar?
Cheers
The fiberglass resin has a much longer work time than even 30 minute epoxy, in my experience, and it has a lower viscosity which is helpful as well.
What episode of Forge and Fire were you on?

I still don't understand how your material stays so hot. When I'm forging I need to stop after 3 or 4 hits.
Well part of that is probably editing to show the actual forging, in this case the starting piece of steel was pretty thick so it did stay hot longer. As you practice you'll be able to get more forging done in the same heat
