I am a huge James Caan fan. The Rain People, The Godfather, The Gambler, Slither, Rollerball, Cinderella Liberty and Thief among of my favorites of his films
Thief was a masterpiece
RIP 😢 you pulled my heart out of my chest when I was 10 yrs old watching Brian’s Song and I followed you since. You will be missed.
James Caan is The Best Actor in The World.
Thief was brilliant movie & score. Tangerine Dream was their usual awesome score. One of my fav groups w my fav actor
I have seen four Caan movies. My favorites are Countdown, The Rain People, The Killer Elite.
What About Misery????
One of my all-time favorite actors. Thinking my tally will be impressive...and probably two comments worth. #32 The Killer Elite...should have been better. #31 Comes A Horseman....very slow moving movie #30 For The Boys...Bette got an Oscar nomination #27...Arnold show...Caan support #25 Funny Lady....it was ok #24 Cloudy 2...not nearly as good as #1 #23 Gardens of Stone...good but slow and boring #22 Hide in Plain Sight....love love this movie....the only movie he directed....a diamond in the rough for sure. #21 Alien Nation...great sci-fi movie....but has not aged well #20 Get Smart...forgettable Caan role #19 Honeymoon in Vegas....fun movie...WoC and I rewatched this one a few weeks ago #17 Flesh and Bone...the forgotten Quaid/Ryan movie #16 Freebie and the Bean...one of the first buddy cop movies....one of the reasons I like Caan so much #15 The Rain People....a Danny Peary Cult Movie #14 Lady in ta Cage....being years since I saw this one #13 Elf...not in the Top 10...I cry foul! #12 Cinderella Liberty....filmed in my area. So the first 22...I have seen....17 or 77.27%
Hi Bruce. An enjoyable post, I like your mini-reviews. Lots of favorites here. I saw Freebie and the Bean at the cinema on a reissue back in the late 70s. Hugely enjoyable buddy cop movie.
glad to see another one that enjoyed and appreciated his more unknown (low key) and only directional effort in "hide and in plain sight" from back in '79. I know I have heard he hated the directing experience of that movie (at least) hence probably why he hasn't went there again.
Almost forgot about Gardens of Stone. Would love to see that one, one more time.
In sane that "Misery" did not score 8+!!! Brilliant performances by all cast members, especially James Caan and Cathy Bates. Not as sentimental as Brian's Song, but overall a significantly better film!
Rollerball is my absolute favourite. Great story, sets costumes ... very Orwellian. JOHNATHAN!!!!!
I'm a big fan too. Saw it at the cinema back in the 70s, loved it. Thanks for posting.
Top 10 Charts I’m so old that I saw it at the cinema when it came out 😃. I even bought the soundtrack album.
I didn't buy the album but I did buy it on DVD and Blu-ray. Hated the remake.
Top 10 Charts Me too. I think I watched the first 15 minutes and turned it off. If you can’t improve something, just leave it alone.
I have seen only 5 of his films. I've seen Elf, Funny Lady, Hide in Plain Sight, Misery, and a Bridge Too Far. I don't really remember him in A Bridge Too Far. I see by his multiple comments that Bruce is a big fan of Caan.
Hi Flora, yep Bruce is a big fan, he decimated our tallys. Must be a while since you've seen A Bridge Too Far, Caan had one of the more memorable sequences of that film. Thanks for posting.
Caan Top 10: #10 Rollerball..one of the best sci-fi movies in my humble opinion. #9 The Gambler...a Top 5 Caan performance. #8 Cloudy #1 fun movie...my kids still watch it #7 A Bridge Too Far....one of my all-time favorite movies...Caan has about 4 scenes in the movie #6 Misery...Bates got the Oscar...but Jimmy helped her a lot #5 Thief...my brothers favorite movie....love his performance in this one #4 Brian's Song...the performance that made him famous....it was so popular they actually released the movie in theaters. #3 El Dorado..one of my favorite movies. #2 Godfather Part 2....not thinking this should be included...barely even a cameo. #1 The Godfather? ...I must confuse..I am not too aware of this movie...lol. So that is 10 for 10 here and 17 on the first comment....for a total of 27.
I've seen 16 of the 32 films listed, just half. Your 27 is impressive. He did have an extended cameo in Godfather II, reprising his role of Sonny Corleone, I thought it was important enough to include it here. You should have included it too. You've left in walk on parts in other charts, even narrations. Another good post.
Get it through your heads. As the actor that drove the movie, THIEF is #1. Godfather, Brian’s song el dorado were other actors as a driving force as much as him. Thief is his stand alone #1 film. Period end
cant believe neil simon's chapter two wasn't in the top 32
May I request that you do a video on Sidney Poitier while he is still with us? I love your videos and I would love to see a Poitier video. I do not know how often you do requests.
Flora, Sidney Poitier is definitely on my list and I'll get to him eventually. Maybe in this new wave of videos. Cheers.
So..just checked out my Caan page....I have seen 48 of the 63 I listed.....and noticed some that seem to be missing on the video...#1 Omission has to be Bottle Rocket...it has great reviews and launched the careers of Luke and Owen Wilson and some director named Wes Anderson. It was ranked 11th of 63 movies on my page. Other Caan movies I liked but could see them missing your Top 32 would be Mickey Blue Eyes, Chapter Two, Kiss Me Goodbye and Silent Movie. Ok....I am done talking about Jimmy Caan.....told you he was one of my favorites. Voted up and shared at UMR.com.
Mickey Blue Eyes just missed the chart, it would have been in at no.33. But I thought it was better to start things off with The Killer Elite rather than a comedy. The other films you mention weren't huge roles for Caan so were easily discarded. I have to judge which films should be in or out and not make the video too long, while you have the luxury of including all of his films on your Caan page. Thanks for the share and comment, much appreciated.
