WORLD CUP lens of the future :: Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 GM Telephoto lens
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 жов 2024
- Since we can't support the USA in the World Cup, the next best thing is clearly the brand new Sony FE 400mm f/2.8 G Master telephoto lens! Sony has officially stepped into the professional sports photography arena with its new zoom lens. Weighing over 2 lbs lighter than the Nikon 400mm f/2.8 E FL ED VR is 11.47 and the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L USM, the Sony 400mm GM also features a more balanced design, sharper image rendition and faster autofocus supporting the Sony A9's 20 frames per second shooting speed.
This lens is extremely significant, not only being better than the competition optically and mechanically, but it also represents what Sony has been striving for with mirrorless cameras providing the best in class system for sports and wildlife photography.
Sony contacted me a few weeks ago and asked if I'd like to come to New Jersey to photograph soccer. I jumped at the opportunity to photograph the New York Red Bulls play FC Dallas. So the USA did not make it far in the World Cup, but this shows us what the possibilities that the future holds - not only for the World Cup but also for photography.
While Sony did bring me to New Jersey to test this lens, this video is not sponsored and the opinions here are my own.

My name is Ted Forbes and I make videos about photography. I’ve been making photographs most of my life and I have a tremendously deep passion for photography that I want to share with you on UA-cam.
The Art of Photography is my channel and I produce photography videos to provide a 360 degree look into the world of making images. We all want to get better so lets do this together!
I make videos covering famous photographers, photography techniques, composition, the history of photography, philosophy and much more.
I also have a strong community of photographers who watch the show and we frequently do social media challenges for photographers to submit their own work. I feature the best and most interesting on the show when we do these so come check it out and get involved!
The shot at 5:14 of the two guys in the empty section is excellent.
You are probably the only Photography channel worth tuning to, every time. Cheers!
What I find most fascinating is that Sony had all you youtubers come and test this beast. For things like the A73 etc it obviously made sense. But I doubt very much that your collective audiences are in the target market for this lens. This exercise imo was all about establishing and supporting a brand narrative that Sony is the #1 pro-level camera manufacturer. They seem to be making really great products. But man, their marketing machine is a thing of beauty. Just fascinating to watch.
Mark Thomson It is exactly since they can’t convince old timers using Canon and Nikon, it is targeted for upcoming sports photographers not yet invested in Canon/Nikon gear. Maybe then in the future, they would be convinced to switch systems when it has been proven to be as efficient and reliable. They would be biased anyway regardless of how good or better the Sony system performs.
Timothy Dexter When are people gonna start realizing Sony is doing great right now? People like too think that Sony is doing horribly, when in fact they’re shining. They’re currently dominating in multiple markets
Muffin Gaming Indeed, as demonstrated by Nikon's latest face plant. Will be interesting to see whether Canon and (now) Panasonic manage to put something out of the hat in the coming weeks that can keep up with them.
Ted, you are the best. Your willingness to admit your inexperience is refreshing, but MUCH more importantly, in the end it doesn't matter because you are a supreme storyteller. The intertwining of the happenings on the field and in the seats was delightful. I always look forward to your updates because UA-cam is inundated with spec videos, and you add a much needed human element. You are a treasure.
I've been enjoying your videos for some time. But your recent work over the past 3-6 months has just been on a new level. Great content, great pace and just flat out entertaining. Thank you for continuing to get better and better.
Always beautiful and not boring! Thanks Ted
I'm after a new setup for multi-day hikes. Would you recommend this combination? XD
Great video and choice of music Ted! Loved seeing some of my favorite photography youtubers all in one place. That lens is a beast!
Your content, style and attitude/approach to other people is the best dude, thanks!
You killed me with Jared Polin 😂😂😂
Man....Im brand new to photography. Maybe 8 months now since I picked up my first DSLR. Now I have the Sony a6300 and I don't think I will ever pick up another brand of camera unless it was given to me. I love all of Sonys line of Cameras. But this new FE 400mm f/2.8 is something I can only DREAM about lol. Very Very nice. Thank you for the video. Love your work. Keep it up.
I might be unattentive but what is the bottom part of the camera? It looks like its been added but I cant figure why. Thanks
I was right behind you at the game 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 nice job
You should have said hi!!!
This is super neat glad you got to go shoot pictures and try out this fun experience
Nice work! I particularly like the segment with the Brit at the end.
He's quite good - I think he'll go far ;-)
Same 🤣
kilogram as 15 stones killed ))
The bloke right before him controlling the buildings, he's pretty talented too!
Ted as usual your video is comprehensive and blows the competition away!!!
Wow! What a camera/lens combo! If Canon and Nikon weren't worried before, they should be now!
Loved your video, Ted. You always have a fresh and unique perspective to your videos that make them, not only informative, but also fun. Thank you.
Nice video! As a former sports photographer, I can speak for some of the pro sports photographers that I know as well as myself . We are creatures of habit! Many of us have been using Canon or Nikon for many years some like myself since the film days. Slick marketing and non-pro sports photographers are not going to convince them to throwaway their expensive glass and camera bodies for the new kid on the block. Now, these efforts may payoff in reaching future pro sports photographers/photojournalist. But not well established shooters and businesses. For instance you must ask yourself in the constant dwindling pool of newspapers companies with their current budget concerns in an ever-changing market. Would companies be willing to bailout on investments made on expensive lenses for Canon and Nikon mounts for a newer system. They may ask this question, are the Sony system going to translate as a major discernable visual difference in the printed medium. If so how many buys can be projected that would justified throwing away a sizable investment in a system that is not broken. I can see USA Today, The Dallas News and other newspapers [that still owns a photo dept.] asking such questions. Independent working sports pros will also be asking similar questions. Another question a sports photographer may ask that may not enter a non-sports photographer mind is can it take a beating, I mean an actual physical beating! In the world of sports one may have to throw down a camera body in order to protect vital body parts against impact with a high-level athlete. Can you pick this camera up after dropping it on a hard surface? Such as a street if you are covering bike racing or basketball court just to mention two? These are question that a pro sports photographer will asks that maybe someone who does not shoot sports would not think about. I am impressed with what I am hearing and seeing about this camera. Maybe the art photographers will benefit most from this camera, lightweight economical etc., there are a lot of good things about this camera. Sony is making headway into the market! If Canon and Nikon rest on its history Sony will take over. I can see myself using this camera for non-sports photography. Maybe . Thanks for posting Ted!
Photos and video quality look outstanding!
So nice to see so many of my youtube photog heroes in one video
I absolutely love sports photography, it's was the "first" genre of photography I ever did. It moves so quickly, especially if you don't know the sport.
The tonal Range of night skyline is amazing! Considering Sony again
Sony doing a good job of promoting the system thats for sure.
I was speechless, what a beautiful lens
Great video and example of putting the lens through such a good test! Well done sir.
Awesome video. Loved the shots at night👍🏻👍🏻
A dream job.
This video was so cool
Astonishing lens - love the subdued colour too...i mean how good is this stuff going to get, and to think we probably haven't even scratched the surface yet.
Wow, nice to see Sony recognizing your talents. Tell Chelsea & Tony they need to do a portrait session with this lens. This is a fun video.
Its so freaking sharp!.... i think im gonna cry
I absolutely enjoyed and loved the video. I was wondering what do you use to make your videos?
Every time I watch one of your videos I learn something new!!! Enjoying them a lot!!! One day I might say I learned everything about photography from your videos... ;-)
Awesome to see you were invited to test the lens at Red Bull Arena, my favorite stadium.
I MUST HAVE THIS!!! A wildlife lens that kicks butt!
Loved the shots of NYC skyline at the end!
I worked as a press photographer for several years and shot a lot of football matches. Back then we used Canon 1D mark II n, and both the 300mm and the 400mm 2.8 L-series lenses. The mark II n did 8,5 frames per second (I think) and the auto focus was super quick. I didn't really feel like I had any limitations even back then.
Shooting football sure is fun! I miss it a lot! And the mark II has a crop sensor, so the effective focal length was even longer :-)
Ted, I must say, the quality of your videos seems to get better and better. Great editing, sound recording and music. Also, send me one of these lenses to try out, will ya?
Maybe it's the processing but the one part I don't like is the bokeh. Looks a little odd to me.
Seems like a great lens
My worlds collide. Ted, Chelsea, Tony and Jared all do reviews of the new Sony 400mm. All good videos. Thanks.
Ted, I’m not sure that Robert Capa was referring to such telephoto lens when he said “If you’re pictures aren’t good enough, you aren’t close enough”, Ha, Ha!
I’m glad you found out how hard it is to be a sports photographer. Too many people take them for granted. People can’t imagine how hard it is just to find where the action is when looking through such lens. I’m an amateur astronomer and many people just can’t get over how hard it is just to spot the moon through telescopes - and there the moon stays still (or almost).
I’ve been a soccer coach when I was younger and had the chance of shooting with manual telephoto lens on an old SLR. Just imagine how hard it was then just to get the action in focus if you wanted to shoot using a wide aperture. I got a lot of respect for sports photographers.
BTW, I really like your image of the two seated fans at 5:15 - a great rule of thirds shot, with great color contrast and negative space. When one goes out to shoot sports, he must not forget to shoot the whole event, not just the athletes, just like you did Ted. They render part of the story - and sometimes tells it so much better.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on that journey of yours Ted.
Are the pictures post-edited?
The bald person near the referee just like Vin Diesel 😂
Great video! Fun watch and informative!
Great video! Incredible performance!! :-)
Woah, that lense is amazing 😱😱
Hey Ted!!! I'm a beginner photographer. I own a Canon SL1, I would really like your help. What lense can you recommend me for landscapes/wildlife and portrait, as a starter!? I know its too specific, but I heard the "nifty fifty" and the Canon 70-200 f4 are good!! Or can you mention something from 1000$ and below! It can be another company lense!! I hope you can help me please!! Have a great day and love your videos!! Thank you!
Pretty crazy to think that the Canon 400mm 2.8 IS I use to own back in the day weighed about double what the A9 + Sony 400mm 2.8 weighs currently. And that doesn't even take into consideration the weight of the canon camera I had it attached to.
I have trouble imagining you with something other than a view camera!
Im in love with this lens❤️
We were actually at this game and my 10 yr old son pointed out "look at that guy he his taking pictures of himself taking pictures" he thought it was funny. Nice shots, that lens is awesome...
this video is a photographers version of the avengers :D
Lol every other photography UA-camr almost made it into this video 😂😂😂
I've watched them all and yours looks the best. Good job
sony gear is a must have for every youtuber
I watched your video before the others Ted. Love your work!
Ted, did Sony get this combo into the hands of a working sports photog at the event? If so, what were their impressions? Not hating at all, but all the You Tubers in your video aren't sports photographers, right? Love your channel BTW.
Patrick Murphy-Racey was there not only to consult all of us but he did a few of his own videos as well if you haven’t seen them. I believe Sony has some other separate things planned. This was a press event.
Your Videos keep getting better every time . Your work is very inspiring , keep being Awesome =)
I finally got my 400 2.8 GM, then we went on vacation, so I haven't used it yet and I'm not lugging that one on our vacation! The 70-200 GM II is just fine. Can't wait to use it at a local track now that summer is coming.
what about the swirly bokeh? I usually like it but on sport shoot it looks a little distracting. Also it goes hand in hand with vignetteing, does the lens have a slower t-stop than the nikon and canon?
The ultimate street photography combo :)
5:17 amazing shot
A most enjoyable video. Very well edited. Great music.
Thanks Pauline!
By chance did you mention what you are blogging with? This is some of the cleanest vlogging video I’ve seen.
Sony A7 iii, Zeiss Batis 18mm and an Evo gimbal during the game segments. Handheld at the end.
Thank you! These are now in my Amazon wishlist. :)
This was such an enjoyable well made informative video 😊
Very entertaining and interesting review, thank you!
That was fun. And I haven’t seen Gordon Laing from Camera Labs in a while.
Ted, this was great, you not only covered the soccer event with all of the guys and girl, but you approached it from a different prospective with Gordan Lang. Is a Sony A9 in your future?
love the vid! especially your cameos - great job incorporating them! long time Sony user and amateur sports photoographer - 12,000 more reasons I love the lens
Ted looks like a sports photographer, no kidding.
My first time on your channel and the first 400 gm review video I watched. Well made, clean and no-frills video! Keep it up!
Really loved the vlog! Great music too
Always love Gordon Laing beautiful voice
Great video, Ted!
Thanks!!!! Was great to hang out with you both!!
Did you and the Fro avoid each other like the plague? LOL
Was it a Sony "test my gear" event? Ted, Tony & Chelsea, Matt & Stephanie and Jared Polin "fro knows photo" tested the Sony 400mm all on the same day on the same game! Woow! :)
Tony & Chelsea Northrup saw you on the video 😉😉😉😉😊😊
Its the sony fan boys
Wow, that's a very good memory!
Awesome video Ted as always
Sony events sounds lit af.
just ordered mine and the Sony a9! can't wait !
beautiful shots. amazing looking lens too.
it better be good its a freaken 12k lens !!!!! You are 1 of the lucky souls that got to use it without paying for it.
so cool to see you shooting sports! Hope you will challenge yourself with this kind of photography again! :)
Loved it!!!!
Wow... I was at this game! I wish I would have known you were there!! Would have totally loved to have said hi
Very informative video once again. I reckon using this lens at night from the Burj Khalifa in Dubai would get some really nice shots.
I would love to be in France right now shooting the World Cup and U.S.A is still in it :-) How does someone get to where they can go do sports photography at the world cup?
I have zero interest in Long lenses but an entertaining video none the less
Thanks for letting us know.
Awesome video!!
how would this lens fare on something like the a6300 or 6500 with their fast focus speeds?
For $12,000 bucks, it's a nice Sony lens. Then what lens do I use when I send this lens in for Sony repairs?
Really loved the video
Interestingly no one mentioned the Canon 400mm DO II. Handholdable and a third lighter! Even so, it's an F4 but incredibly fast. I will test it with the A9.
What a legend
Is it ok to ask for some of those NYC night sight skyline photos for wallpaper? They are amazing photos.
I need a tutorial on how to edit the shots like you did with the football shots, those colours were out of this world.
Pretty Awesome!
But does the battery on the Sony last for a 90 min soccer match?
;)
Yep the A9 uses the new z-battery. Worked just fine.
I run and play soccer by where you guys were shooting in Hoboken every night but that was one night I didnt go :/ lol
Your videos are great! but most part of the time I feel overwhelmed.
What monopod were you using?
I
LOVE
THIS
the behind the scenes video on what was that shot?? Great video! :)
