My oldest just finished the Math 5 course book and an average lesson took her 45-60 minutes. She does not struggle in math. It is important to note that the last 1/4 of the book was a different story. Once you begin manipulating the fractions and decimals, it takes them a really long time to work those problems out. She spent up to 3 hours on some of the lessons. The biggest problem that she had was that it made her feel like she wasn’t good at math any more simply because it took a long time. She is in the beginning of Math 6 now and back to 30-45 minute lessons. Just wanted to add that in case anyone had a parallel experience.

I think it’s a misconception that homeschooling is a much shorter day than formal school. Yes it’s obviously shorter because you’re teaching 1 child vs 30. But if they’re doing 6-8 subjects a day I don’t know how people finish in less than 4-6 hrs

Just coming for confirmation that I need to stick with TGTB for the upcoming years. Thanks for all you share!

We use this for our 5th grader as well. I love that they have the video lesson and also the mini lesson in the book. Sometimes my son will watch the video but when he does the practice it's obvious he's not getting it. I have him read the mini lesson at that point and, so far, he has always had full understanding after doing both.

We've been using TGTB Math 6. I love that it's thorough and doesn't take long at all to complete each lesson. It's the quickest of any subject for my son. I really hope Math 7 is ready by the end of summer 2023. I'm not sure what we'll do otherwise!

Thank you so much for this video. Needed reminder and glimpse into how others are doing it. Thank you also for your recommendation of Shormann in previous videos. It has changed Cam's math life for the better, we love it so much, such a blessing!

Thanks for sharing! Always good to get a general idea of how long things take (although, yes, it definitely varies lesson to lesson and child to child).
We’ve always done TGTB for my girls and they love it but this year for my oldest, it’s definitely taking longer. She enjoys it though and doesn’t complain, so I had adjust my thoughts of it should take 45 minutes (maybe an hour) for her to the fact that it typically takes more on the hour fifteen or more mark. I definitely think it’s a strong math curriculum and she still loves it ❤

Thanks for this video! As my son gets older, we tend to take more time. I know this is normal, but it's nice hearing others' experiences be the same! I remember watching your videos when Olivia was so tiny, and now she's already doing Math 5! God bless xoxo ❤️

We are around the same time frame as well! Also, your homeschool mom “drink collection” on your table I can feel in my soul 😂 Always have a variety of drinks with me too lol!

I love watching your videos and seeing what homeschool looks like for older kids. Even for my third grader I find math takes the longest especially when learning new concepts.

My son is not a fan of math but I would say he too can finish Math 5 in the 45-60 minutes as well. He is also my oldest so he typically does it independently while I work with sisters and I love that he doesn’t hardly ever need my help because the videos are so great! I also appreciate that they cut down the review problems significantly in Level 5 because that part was too much in level 4.

It has been taking my child about 2 hours. It is just too much for her. I have had to cross out several problems so that she is not so overwhelmed.

My son too! And I feel like he is my most advanced child in math. If he did all the problems it would easily take 1.5 hours and he doesn’t play around. I felt like I was the only one! I haven’t heard others with the same issues! He wants to switch but I want to stick with it. I read that it’s not advanced but it sure seems advanced to me!

This is my first year homeschooling, and I have ages 11,8,5 & 2 (all boys). I was wondering how your morning basket has changed over the years. I LOVE how you do it, and the content you cover, I just can't get the lessons done with the 5&2 year olds. The other two would sit and listen, but trying to do things "the way you do with my own spin" (for lack of a better term), makes the kids miserable. I have paired it down, given that the ages of our kiddos are very different, but at one point you did have these ages...can you go over tips and tricks you've used?... Also, just the evolution of your homeschool day as time has gone on. We are using TGATB, and love it. I do the play dough, sensory bins, sitting with us, toys, etc with my toddler, but I'm scrambling for this "togetherness". I think I just sort of have to wait until the season is right, but I feel defeated at the same time... I look up to you so much, and just was curious on how it was when thing were more chaotic?

My son is doing Level 4 and how long it takes is often dependent on his attitude 😆. I also feel like 45 to an hour is about right for video, practice, and review.

Thank you for all your videos. This is my first year homeschooling so it has been a little bit overwhelming when comes to choose curriculums. I have a 4th grader and a 7th grader. What is you opinion between The good and the beautiful Math and Teaching text books? Thank you. 😊

Did your daughter do every single problem in math 5? I have seen a lot of people complain that there are so many problems, and some people have their child only do some of them.

My son is currently using Math K by TGTB and it typically takes us 10-15 minutes for him. Sometimes it takes less and he asks to do more lessons. My older kids it takes longer the older they get. We are enjoying Math K and he is learning way more than my kids did when they were in Kindergarten at public school.

I ageee, math should not be 20 minutes for an older elementary child. I wanted to try TGTB Math 6 but didn’t because they haven’t finished the following grades ☹️ Maybe they will have them done by the time our younger two come up. We choose Teaching Textbooks (we use the workbook but if she is struggling with a new concept she watches the instruction).
What do your older children use for high school math?
