    Can't grasp the fact that "Bú Zhī Dào" was simplified to "Bu'r Dao" up to just only "Bu Rao" in Běijīng accent 😭 that explains why I can't almost catch up to what some actors say in mainland CDramas lol. they shorten a lot of words to the extremes

    My favourite Mandarin resource!
    Back in the 2010s, I studied a little Mandarin here in the UK, and later did some epic journeys all over China - loved it! Been all around Taiwan twice, also very nice country.
    I discovered one unusual thing speaking Mandarin in China; when I tried to say each word slowly and clearly, and tried to get the tones correct, people didn't seem to understand me. But when I said a sentence fast, without worrying too much about perfect pronunciation, people understood me much better.
    Of course tones are very important, but the FLOW of a sentence is also important.
    And when I hear your friend from Northern China speaking, that is exactly what I hear! He almost blurs each word into the next word, it is so fast! The Malaysian lady speaks a bit slower, but the person from Taiwan also speaks quite fast.

    Hearing Mandarin speakers from different places really highlights the richness and diversity of Chinese spoken around the world. The differences in Pei Ern's Malaysian tones and word choice are very interesting, and I guess some of the extra words are due to the English influence in Malaysia? Dongliang's Northern accent is among the more understandable examples compared to some other examples I've heard. Chungwei highlights the diversity among Taiwanese accents, as my impression is that his Taiwanese accent is stronger than Grace's Taiwanese accent, which, even in non-teacher, daily life mode, I feel is pretty neutral, with clear enunciation.

    • @GraceMandarinChinese
      @GraceMandarinChinese  Рік тому +3

      I like your analysis Peter! I feel that some of the extra words in Malaysia might also originate from Chinese dialects, but I'm not sure.

      Well, personally me though, but Taiwanese is easier for me to understand. It sounds pretty lazily, just the way I talk in real life (I'm Russian, and our language is quite lazy as well), so I kinda am able to make out what the person says

      I’ve been living in Taiwan for 14 years now and I’m only about an A2 level in Chinese, although I can read and write about 1800 traditional characters. The problem is most teachers have a different accent then they have in Taiwan so the hardest part for me is listening and understanding. My wife is Taiwanese, who speaks English, but if she heard someone speaking with a Scottish accent she can’t understand it, much like me trying to understand a different Chinese accent.

    Thanks Grace and Grace’s friends. Happy New Year. I’m actually not sure which accent is hardest or easiest. I feel like what made the Malaysian examples difficult was the unique word choices, but regarding pronunciation alone it might have been the easiest...I don’t know haha maybe it’s just me. Nonetheless, it was fun hearing all the differences!

    One time I told my Taiwanese friend 我去打油,not realizing the proper way is 我去加油. Then I asked my Malaysian friend why do we say 打油, the answer I got was hilarious. Same with 按錢, Malaysian will say 我去銀行按錢, just ask pei ern what that means for a good laugh. I try to learn Taiwanese mandarin, but because I grew up with Malaysian Mandarin, it gives a nostalgic feeling when I hear it, even though it has improper grammar, words, etc

    This makes it impossible for me to learn Chinese:" , no matter how good i am at it , or how many words i learned , there is always new and different accents i still didn't learn , and even if i learned every word in Chinese dictionary or vocabulary, i still might not understand anything that is said or spoken from someone who got different accent , Chinese language is like a language for a whole continent, you only can learn specific and limited district's language, but you can never say that you mastered " the whole Chinese "
