I really like how the Banker told her the house wasn't an investment. Sometimes in life, we want what we want, and that is our moment to choose anything that makes us happy. You can tell that the "Vanity House" makes her happy. She could also Airbnb it nowadays while she's traveling, and in that way it is an investment!

I say this sincerely, and I hope respectfully. There is nothing ecological about this type of construction. The wealthy will use buzzwords like "ecological and "sustainable concepts" as greenwashing. Any efficiency in operating the house through "sustainable" techniques will not ever overcome the impact from the initial construction. Note all that concrete for example. Is it a primary or secondary home (impact of flying to/from of each visit), etc.

People have no idea how much it costs to live anywhere in Alaska, let alone rural Alaska, where it's not uncommon for people who are already barely getting by to pay 20x(!!!) what we pay for electricity in the lower 48, where a jar of peanut butter is $20. Lack of basic road and utility infrastructure = $2M home. And good for her -- she deserves this exquisite place! She's delivering health care to Indigenous Alaskan children, deploying U.S. federal dollars that otherwise wouldn't be spent there. I think it's awesome that Ketchikan has people like her in it, bringing her expertise to the community and investing her life there.

Limited land on an island, everything, including the labor, has to be brought in over the water, site prep; I still don't see where all the money went.
Architects are outrageously expensive. Factor in the engineering it took, materials, and labor. Seems like a fair price - and the location! :o)
@@davidcattin7006 Actually, I question that. I have met a number of architects who don't work in the field because it is so crowded.
And just like lawyers, the grunt work is done by unlicensed graduate students and others who rely on the head of the company because they have the license without which no city planning office will accept a design.
In a word, everything's negotiable.
This is a home only 0.1% of Americans can afford and 0.001% would pay for. Beautiful but overly expensive
I get what you're saying, but for accuracy's sake shift your digits one place to the left. In the US the top 1% possess $10.8 million in wealth. Also, that percentile is much better than the rest of us at preserving their wealth, so it would be unwise to call this home "overly" expensive. The odds are they won't lose money on it. Perhaps you meant "unaffordable"?

That’s a lot of money for a 1 bedroom house
1, water will erode the foundation of the house, and it will last about 20 years, give or take; 2, water collection from the root is a good idea, but very dumb when you are building a house next to a lake full of water; the house rooting is using cheap material? wind-proven? 3, no solar? no septic tank? so this house is connected to the grid? It would be great to build a solar, tidal and wind electricity generator in the house, so it's self-sufficient. The septic tank can also be used to fertilized a small farm, AKA, free unlimited vegetable. 4, too much concrete, it's expensive both in term of price and the environment cost. The house should instead build few meter above ground with little concrete used, and a deeper foundation can be drilled for prosperity. 5, I suggest this house to be sold ASAP to someone dumb to get the cost back. You can advertised this house as featured in WSJ, and I am sure some dunnnny would buy it for more.

It is a beautiful house with a beautiful view, but I would not want to be near those glass walls or so close to the shore during an earthquake or if there is tidal wave afterwards.
That would be a reasonable fear, but the region is not prone to very strong earthquakes (it's a tame section of the "ring of fire") and it would be very unlikely for a tidal wave to affect the shore where the house is because of the protective surrounding islands. That said, it does get very stormy and I'm sure it would be a little scary with a big storm happening at high tide.
Its Ketchikan, that risk isn't there. And the heavy use of concrete makes it quite earthquake resilient.

I was surprised that this came from WSJ. Admittedly my Google interest algorithm features a lot of content about my birthplace, and I do like nature, photography, and architecture so I was thinking it was going to be cruise advertisement and was going to keep scrolling on, but then, the fact it was put out by WSJ piqued my curiosity about why ... do the rich and famous want an alternative to Sedona, Malibu, or Jackson Hole now that we're experiencing global warming?

I agree the cost is unbelievably high, but costs of everything are going to be higher in Ketchikan-flying people in, sourcing and barging in the materials, etc. There are few (if any) other houses on the island built to this level of specification.
Love the home and the cantilever design. I also appreciate how much thought went into the landscaping. One criticism, a missed opportunity with the backsplash in the kitchen....could have been really special.

I think you should qualify that with how much more expensive everything is up there because of shipping. That is not a multi-million dollar home just on its merits. It's expensive for the same reason a pack of spaghetti that people pay .99 for in the lower 48 costs $10 up there. Shipping.

Interesting you got that out of the short time she's on screen. I didn't see anything like that. Some people aren't comfortable in front of the camera and their true personality does not show. We get it already. Your homes accross the pond are made with stone or brick. Well guess what, so are ours. We have just as many stone and brick homes. So you all can stop saying this garbage on every single video. No one is impressed. Also those wood frames homes. They last at least a hundred years. That's longer than you should care to live on this earth. But other homes are 2 to 3 hundred years old including churches, schools, and other buildings.
