  • Welcome to the WeekendFrontier! Water is life. Enjoy the natural views of a Pinyon Jay visiting a watering hole that is fed by a rare natural spring and found in the Desert National Wildlife Refuge in Nevada’s Mojave Desert. Pinyon Jays primary food source is pine nuts; they harvest and store the nuts in the fall to eat during winter and spring. Local populations vary year to year depending on the success of the pine nut crop.
On April 25, 2022, the Defenders of Wildlife submitted a petition to Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service requesting that Pinyon Jay be listed as an endangered and/or threatened species and critical habitat be designated for this species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. On Aug 17, 2023, based on substantial scientific information indicating the adverse habitat treatments in piñon-juniper woodlands, increased wildfire frequency, invasive species, inadequacy of existing regulatory mechanisms, and climate change; it was decided, that designation as an endangered species may be warranted and potential threats to the Pinyon Jay will be fully evaluated during a 12-month status review. Is the Pinyon Jay an important species to protect?
