Andrew, had some guitar time with you today. You are a man from my own heart. I'm 63 now and been listening to Kottke Fahey and Lang since '76. Spent the night with you listening to all of my favorites. You are a very talented young man. Thank you. Steve.
A Leo fan since '73, the ravages of time were evident at his last concert I attended in late '22. I was concerned recordings would soon be all we had. No cause for concern now. What an absolutely brilliant performance Andrew!
I owned a Bozo 12-string like you are playing, way back in the 1970s. I so wish I had kept it! Your playing is amazing, as good as Leo ever played Owls, kudos!
Fantastic cover, one of the most accurate Kottke covers I have seen and most of those have been videos of your playing. I'd love to see you tackle Monopoly from "Try and Stop Me".
Absolutely beautiful rendition of one of my favourite Kottke tunes. The outdoor setting makes a perfect visual accompaniment. Montana sure looks to be a great place to live.
I was just in the mood to hear "Owls" while on UA-cam and came across this video for the first time. This is my favorite Leo Kottke song and you killed it. And on a Bozo! Outstanding.
Absolute perfection! And played on an actual Božo guitar, just like Leo's! This is also one of my favorites, with all its rhythmic changes and haunting melody, and you really nailed it! I'm saving this one to enjoy again and play along with (and subscribing for more!)
Eccezionale !!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic playing. I think maybe the Bozo sound is a part of the secret. I always thought of Leo as a mahogany player, but this sounds so right on a rosewood guitar. Just like his recordings from the 70s.
such treat !!!! thank you...!!! fantastic cover on a Bozo no less....I have always thought this is one of the most lyrical pieces ever written for 12 string...you do it justice!!!
Andrew this is as close to note and tone as you can get, perfect,I would love to meet you one day ,thank you for your diligence and passion and discipline, lenny madden
Well done young man. Look down at your shoes....... You gave a wonderful Kottke vibe when you play him, and a wonderful Fahey vibe when you play him. Both men would be honored by your nod to them. I know it’s odd to honor existing musicians but I’d also like to hear you do a Peter Lang too.
"The Owls are not what they seem". I'm not fooled. A "Mission Impossible" mask... right Leo? Kidding aside, great job. Owls has been one of my favorite Kottke tunes for ... man, has it been 45+ years.
Very clean and nicely done, as usual! You do such an excellent job of playing his tunes. Podunavac really made some big sounding guitars. I used to play Leo's but it felt like a Cadillac and my little hands were only good for a VW! It really made me appreciate just how strong his fingers were.
Thanks for watching Bill. Leo once told me a personal story about Bozo that made me appreciate his artistry, I believe he overcame a lot in his life as many of our ancestors did. I'm curious to know more about the Bozo you reference. I believe he still has the Bozo he played in the live footage but don't know what became of the fancier one. The guitar I'm playing here spent a day with Leo once.
Was that the story about being allergic to sawdust? At one point, Leo had me take his guitars home (3 of them) so he'd have less to worry about. It was a handful but it meant I could play them at any time. The Bozo had a tremendous sound, much as your video here, with a huge bass and octave strings that really rang out. In the 3 years I worked for him, it was the Bozo, the Martin 12 cutaway (repaired by Lundberg) and various 6 string Gibsons (?). This was before he discovered Taylor guitars. I just did a search for any mention of Leo's good-ol-days guitars and found this 1982 mention of "Blue Dot" (in response to a question about writing). Because he mentions my name, it kinda ties Leo, you and me together since I finally learned that darn piece from your video!
Funny connection. I recently came across the only other recording of Blue Dot I've ever heard besides MFAS. Unfortunately he starts playing and stops saying he can't play it on the guitar he's borrowing.
Hello mr.lardner importante ANTHONY frome school información love the vídeos you do the re the best you need all wat you need white your work...ANTHONY
Around year 1980 I wrote a letter (hand writing ) to Leo in Minneapolis asking him to tell me how to play Owls, and he responded to me (!) he could not remember how he played it…. I still remind the colored envelope with a small pink pig drawn in the back.. and his hand written signature Leo
Owls is tricky, to get the first bit up to tempo, play as sweet as Leo does in the middle section, then get back on the original tempo. Big piece to pull in terms of performance
I think every guitar head and hobbit head wonder how you get ahold of these guitars? Are you Tony klassens son? Or lawyer? Cheers as always great playing!!
Depends on the guitar, anywhere from low tension light to medium. The Bozos are really well built and can handle higher tension, many of the early B45 gibsons didn't hold up to tension over the years so they get much lighter strings.
With Bozos the question is less about price and more about try to find one. I've seen asking prices as low as 2500 and as high as 15k depending on condition and ornamentation. 12 string models are generally much more than the 6
Se abitassimo piu' vicino mi piacerebbe molto vederti suonare dal vivo e magari fare qualche pezzo insieme.Se decidi di venire in Italia fammelo sapere ! Ma come sei riuscito a trovare una BOZO 12 corde?
Sorry I did not see this comment earlier Donato. Send me a message if you are ever in my part of the United States. Bozos, while still very rare instruments, are much easier to find in the US than they would be in Europe I am sure.
This man is so awesome, keeping Kottke alive and well.
I grew up listening to my dad play these songs. Thank you
Just like Bill Morrissey keeping alive the music of Mississippi John Hurt!
THANK YOU, Andrew, for what you do!
This song reminds me of my dad. I need to spend more time with him. I havet seen him in 10 yrs. Makes me sad.
I wish my folks lived closer
Wonderful. Beautiful rendition of one of my favorite Kottke pieces! Nicely done!
Best damn cover I've heard of this great Leo tune. Tone, timbre, and timing. You rocked it, Andrew!
Thanks my dude
I get the same feeling watching this that I used to get listening to Bream play Bach’s Chaconne.
😂 So fine....Loved this piece for 30 years. Never I heard it covered until now. Man, you've got The Gift. I salute you.
Fabulouse playing bringing me great pleasure.Thanks.

Good and amazing in the tradition of mr Kottke.
Leo would be proud,beautiful
Perfetto! Il migliore interprete dell'immenso e unico Leo. Grazie davvero!!
Absolutely still fantastic!!!!!! Love it!!!!
Andrew! This is beautiful!
A Leo fan since '73, the ravages of time were evident at his last concert I attended in late '22. I was concerned recordings would soon be all we had. No cause for concern now. What an absolutely brilliant performance Andrew!
Thank you
My favorite Kottke tune (that I have never seen him play) and you NAIL IT!
Nice playing and nice guitar Wow!
Amazingly played, fantastic tune! I wish I had a little of whatever Leo (possibly) was taking when he did this one....
beautiful playing always stirs my heart and sooths my soul, thanks for sharing
Incredibly beautiful ! Flawless talent
Beautifull......
Thanks for doing this! One of my favorites of Leo’s that has been largely unnoticed. I have never seen him play this live. Great, great job!
Amazing cover.

This is premium guitar playing on a premium guitar!
Wow. Masterful. And on a Bozo too! From the looks (and sound) of it.
Yes. Great sound. Great arrangement.
Just lovely. Such control!
One of my very favorites of Leo's! great job Andrew!
Outstanding!
I've asked you before, but please let me know if you ever come to the UK to play...
amazing cover, you play like kottke which is also amazing 🫶🏽
Great cover tune thumbs up.
Thanks again David
Beautiful. Thank you for sharing this wonderful music from a wonderful location.
A flawless cover. The sound is wonderful, too! And for the guy behind the camera; you did a great job, too!
By the way, that's a Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) to your left, and in the far background. "Owls" may nest in these.
what a beautiful echo of a leo kottke tune
Thank you Jeff
Absolute perfection! And played on an actual Božo guitar, just like Leo's! This is also one of my favorites, with all its rhythmic changes and haunting melody, and you really nailed it! I'm saving this one to enjoy again and play along with (and subscribing for more!)
Thanks Robert. You should check out my recording of Room 8. I did that one on Leo’s 1970 Bozo
Wow, you even have a Bozo guitar!!!. They must be rare as hen's teeth. Fantastic authentic playing. Bravo!
Well done! Bravo!!

I love it man, you are amazing
Good lord that was good
Super well done. You nailed the tuning!
Thank you Steven
Nicely done Andrew, I've always loved this since I heard LK play it and just had buy it.

Thank you Gary
This is just masterful. You are a very talented guy - please keep posting videos like this!
such treat !!!! thank you...!!! fantastic cover on a Bozo no less....I have always thought this is one of the most lyrical pieces ever written for 12 string...you do it justice!!!
Epic ! Well done mate.
I'm completely unfamiliar with the tuning, but see how it works well with this piece. Very well done, and one of my favorites also!
Andrew this is as close to note and tone as you can get, perfect,I would love to meet you one day ,thank you for your diligence and passion and discipline, lenny madden
Thank you Lenny. Anytime you're in Milwaukee...
Well done young man. Look down at your shoes.......

"The Owls are not what they seem". I'm not fooled. A "Mission Impossible" mask... right Leo? Kidding aside, great job. Owls has been one of my favorite Kottke tunes for ... man, has it been 45+ years.
And almost 30 years since Twin Peaks aired. Time goes by
That's a beautiful guitar, man. It's exquisite, but still tasteful. And it sounds like pure melted gold.
As usual....nailed it!!!
Thanks Chad, good to hear from you
Wow, incredible! Very Greenhouse-esque, both in style and sound...
Please - would love to hear your rendition of Airproofing 2.
Really great work Andrew....and your correct, that guitar is stellar - in looks and sound!
Thanks Tim, as always appreciate the support
Sweet Bozo and great playing.
Thanks Steve
Really beautiful, Andrew. I remember meeting you at Leo's Honorary Doctorates at UMW many years ago. Keep up the great work!!
Wow. Yes I was there. Seems like it must have been 10 years ago.
Beautifully played, Andrew. I'm blown away by that guitar, too.
Nice to see you play these different songs of Fahey and Kottke, appreciate it! Sounding good man!
Sir MG Thank you, and thanks for the new subscription my friend.
Fantastic job! You really nailed it!
Thank you
great job. even using a bozo twelve string leo used to play those days long ago...
Just about perfect, I’d say.
Very clean and nicely done, as usual! You do such an excellent job of playing his tunes. Podunavac really made some big sounding guitars. I used to play Leo's but it felt like a Cadillac and my little hands were only good for a VW! It really made me appreciate just how strong his fingers were.

Great work, congratulations!
Beautiful! By the way, at 1:25 there is a small dinosaur crossing the field! :)

BRAVISSIMO !!!!! niente da invidiare a Leo Kottke Certo che la BOZO aiuta ed il suono non puo' che essere eccezzionale
What a HOOT!
Hi its torreuna great music
Thanks Torre hope you are having a wonderful summer!
Wow wow wow
Trying to learn this. I’ll get back with you in 6 months.
Owls is tricky, to get the first bit up to tempo, play as sweet as Leo does in the middle section, then get back on the original tempo. Big piece to pull in terms of performance
Wow
Wow wow wow 💘😇
Exqusite virtuoso perfromance. Andrew you made that Bozo 12 walk and talk.
Thank you!
Still freakin got it!
miss you man
The chattering sound that interrupts this performance is not a bird. It's a mammal. A squirrel. A very scary squirrel.
Haha yeah it was like a small black squirrel. He was not a happy camper that day
Wow. Just a fantastic cover. Would you mind sharing the tuning?
CGDGBE (tuned down 1 1/2 to 2 steps from there)
I think every guitar head and hobbit head wonder how you get ahold of these guitars? Are you Tony klassens son? Or lawyer? Cheers as always great playing!!
great work, what recording equipment did you use? such great video and audio quality
Nothing fancy at all, I was traveling so brought cheap equipment, cheaper canon dslr for video and nt5 mics.
Hey Andrew,
What kind of microphone are you using?
Many thanks for the great videos!
Grts Sep
Nobody can do Kottke like Andrew
Awesome as usual! Would love to see more Kottke covers! Also when you're playing Kottke stuff on the 12 string what gauge strings do you use??
Depends on the guitar, anywhere from low tension light to medium. The Bozos are really well built and can handle higher tension, many of the early B45 gibsons didn't hold up to tension over the years so they get much lighter strings.

Andrew Lardner Sounds like I can forget to find one like your guitar 😓. Have you tried the Taylor lksm-12? I wonder how it compares to your Bozo?
wicked... where on earth does one buy a bozo handmade guitar?
This one was purchased directly from Bozo. Nowadays it's a little harder
Beautiful song! What tuning is that?
Se abitassimo piu' vicino mi piacerebbe molto vederti suonare dal vivo e magari fare qualche pezzo insieme.Se decidi di venire in Italia fammelo sapere ! Ma come sei riuscito a trovare una BOZO 12 corde?
