I have been following this account for years and it feels like Vaughn is a friend but it felt even more that way in this video, like you brought me for a small tour of London. I would like more videos like that! You could, for instance, visit Basildon (I know that has been done before in a documentation though). Cheers.
I just realized Vaughn joined Mesh in 2023...I still can't understand how Mesh hasn't taken off in the states..Mesh is what depeche mode should still be
Good clip Vaughn. I went to see Nitzer Ebb at the Astoria...on their Big Hit Tour. I met Daniel Miller for the second time at the gig and he was really approachable, and NE's promotion guy. I also met DM during Liverpool gigs 83, 84. I was outside the hotel in 84, and some guy called me over from Radio Merseyside, which was opposite. He asked me who the band was, and if they wanted to do an interview. So I had to go and ask Fletch and Martin if they wanted to do the interview, which they did. Good memories!
Thank you for this tour! I’ve never been in the UK and it was interesting to see this place by your eyes. I’ve never thought about that, but you helped Martin to get equipment for making Freelove, When the body speaks or Goodnight Lovers, so we can thank you for these nice songs!
I have watched and enjoyed your video accounting your encounter with Martin that day a couple of times. I loved the energetic commentary and lively , poignant recollection. And here were are getting a visual of the day itself. Love it. Many thanks for this!
I met Martin Gore along with Dave Gahan and the late Andy Fletcher, in 2005 at Tower Records. Adorable human. Very nice and lovely man. All three were very gracious, kind and generous with their time. I cherish that memory 🥹🥹❤️❤️ Martin Gore is the best song writer and what a fantastic singer. Wow 🤩
Cool, thanks VG! I met him 1990 at a club called Hard Club in London. The music they played was very industrial, and I remember they played 'Kaleid' that night. Strangely, he didn’t have a bodyguard with him. I also saw him once again in Stockholm, completely drunk, but this time he had a bodyguard who was almost carrying him. I met Fletch at the bar during the Yazoo concert at Hammersmith Apollo in 2008. He was wearing a trendy jacket that looked like a orange life jacket. At that same concert, I saw Andy Bell outside-I guess he was there too. He was wearing a colorful cap and a vibrant outfit, which I clearly remember.
This is a video about me watching a video about when I met Martin Gore’s body guard on Skype in a chat room with 16 other people that were prerecorded on a Wednesday after I played keyboards at the keyboard retail store, while watching Marin Gore interviews from 1998.
Me too! At The Edge in Palo Alto, CA. after the Devotional concert. Alan Wilder was there too. They were both polite guys. I wrote a letter to Martin and didn't send it. My brother laughed when he found it in my closet. I told him one day I'll meet him......and I did.
Chip-Pole-Lay (Chipotle). They are all over America. Big towns and small towns. Just another sad example of the Americanization of London. Great video... nostalgia trip.
Great video Vince I never knew this story. I met Martin Gore in Santa Barbara as he lives here in California. I have a couple of friends that sees him regularly. I live in San Luis Obispo California which I'm 2 hours away from Santa He has a couple of hangs he usually goes to here. A friend of mine is friends with his wife as well too.
10:22- I like the lady covering her face behind you. Hasn't Manchester lost all of it's historical Factory Records and gig related buildings to restaurants, stores, or apartments as well? And I remember several years ago hanging out at a small guitar shop that dealt with arrogant college students who would play the guitars, scratching them with the zippers from ther jackets and then not buying them.
Possibly, I lived in Manchester during the whole Madchester era The Factory records building was always covered from top to bottom with the poster of the particular release that was out at the time. So it always changed it's appearance, and looked unique.
Why do you have a wig on top of your smartphone? First time noticing that. 🤣🤣 I am not discounting your video but I found that bit funny😄 Thank you for sharing memory lane with us. We all love Depeche Mode and your piano interpretation/renditions are great!
@@cesimone2009 hahaha no worries ! The wig as you call it is also known as "a dead cat". It's a windshield designed for outdoor recording. The purpose being that if any wind blows, the sound of the wind is absorbed by the "wig" and the sound of the wind is then not recorded by the microphone. VG 😎🎹
Ay,VG..!Te escucharía toda la tarde..!Lástima que sólo hablo español🙄 Sos excelente periodista( además de músico),muy entretenido y simpático.Gracias x tus videos.👏 Adiós 👋 :-)
Thanks for the blast from the past mate (although i’m not sure I wanted reminding 😆) All those memories came flooding back, We were like the modern day sweat shop labor but we didn't realise until later, the days before minimum wage. I call it character building because I now know what red flags to look out for in many aspects of life. But really I think it was all about the people, it was a good crowd for little while. Other memories are Maria screaming in Spanish, the fridge stacked with loaves of bread and milk to keep the battery chickens fed on toast and tea, tramp turds and discarded needles in the alley along with the occasional dead body, The huge caged trolley to ferry stock up from the warehouse every morning, the smell in the loopstation from the drains where the River Thames water level would rise and push toxic water up. There’s a really good view of that area around the Astoria (as it was) in the opening scenes of the movie 28 days later. it got re-developed because they dug a huge hole where the Astoria was to do all the building works for the expansion of the tube station. I actually still live just a few miles away but never venture there if i can help it.
Hi, Vaughn. Love your content. Been watching since your very first DM album reviews. In what video do you discuss the bear shirt from the Only When I Lose Myself music video?
I loved that shop. I remember having to lie to my then girlfriend about the price of the massive Oberheim OB12 I’d just bought. And I’ve met Martin twice. Once at a Renegade Soundwave gig when I had to look after him for a while as he was slightly worse for wear. Taking one of your musical heroes to the toilet is like one of those surreal dreams you have now and then. Second time was in the VIP area at the Mute Festival at the Roundhouse and I reminded him of that first instance. Was met with a massive grin and that laugh😂
Man I loved that store. Having also grown up in South Africa, I used to see the Turnkey ads in Sound On Sound magazine. I could barely even afford the magazine, let alone buying new synthesizers in SA and they looked so much cheaper in the UK. I used to pick up second gear cheaply as everyone was chasing digital which was way out of my league. Roland System 100m, Korg Mono/Poly and Roland TR-808. I had them all back then for only a couple of hundred Rand each. So you can imagine going into Turnkey for the first time in late 1988 when I relocated to the UK was something I will never forget. Now if Martin Gore had been in there that day too I think my head would have exploded.
I purchased my first ever controller from that store in 2002. It was a mini M-Audio.. can't remember the model.. I was used to Keyboards and didn't really understand the concept of a controller with Daw etc.. So I called the shop a few day's later and they had to explain to me how a controller works! It was rather embarrasing as I should have done my research.. but the M-Audio just looked so cool and depechemodey!! lol... I could have been you mate on the other end of the phone lol
Thanks for sharing. We had a similar alley in the downtown where I grew up in Northern California (Santa Rosa). It was just 2 doors down from a music store where I bought my first professional synth...an Ensoniq Sq-80. The alley was called 'Anarchy Alley' and often smelled of clove cigarettes and piss as well. Quite a few punk rockers would socialize there. P.S. hopefully Martin didn't stop off for a piss at your location all those years ago...😅
Yeah, you've probably experienced the same micro shock that I felt when I bumped into Al & Hep on a cold winter morning in Richmond, Feb 2005. Instant adrenaline. 😂😂
Amazing how things move on. Back in ‘97 I bought a load of gear from Turnkey. It was a very busy place to visit, loads of people playing on keyboards and no one seeming to buy anything. 😂 I bought an Emu ESI 32 with SCSI Drive, the blue Yamaha CS1x which I still have and use for live, near field monitors and a Mackie Mixing desk. A good commission day for someone 😊
I met and spoke to Martin Gore at Front 242 gig at the Astoria, about the time of his solo album, he was really friendly and kind, unfortunately I was drunk and said he should just do the solo stuff and split up DM! 🫣🤭🙄

I met Neil Tennant twice. Once at a Blur gig in 1994 and then in 1999 in Cardiff after a PSB gig with Chris Lowe.

@Russman1966 I'm American but I have a lot of respect for Tony Wilson, Rob Gretton, and Martin Hannet. All three of them had a unique vision.
Nice way to end the video by singing World in My Eyes!

I live in deepest Devon, but would often swing by the shop whenever I was in London. A great shop/company, and it’s a shame it closed
