Russ, ever thought about interviewing Jeff Jones? Might be interesting if you went to his stomping grounds and took some MTB "lessons" from him, showcasing the benefits of his bikes.
If you like it and it’s fun, it’s a great mod. Keep up the non “traditional” builds as, for me, there are no rules for bikes.
That bike looks like a blast! Finally sank in that I've found my people in non-competitive cycling after watching this channel for a long time now. Wasn't a patreon member but fixed that today.
Have you tried a Lauf fork on a MTB frame with drop bars without changing to RB shifters? I've got the parts but haven't managed the courage to do so.

That set up would make an awesome long distance, wilderness touring bike. Especially if your route involves old double track, mining or logging roads, and maybe a bit of Mtn singletrack thrown in. Just be sure and throw on an 11-50t cassette with a 28t chainring. Top speed wouldn't be any concern, just mellow cruising with a minimal bikepacking load.
It would be more awesome with the original handlebars.
Awesome Mod! I have a road bike which I converted to single speed. I have 3 sets of bars for it and I switch often. My favorite of the 3 is a set of bmx bars. It’s ridiculous and awesome fun. Since I’m single speed and only run a front brake switching takes no time at all. I think because bikes are expensive nowadays we stopped Modding them out. It is nice to see your outside the box on your bike and it looks tough as hell. I do believe a banana seat would make it perfect 👌
This is a really helpful video for people who who are not necessarily gravel curious, but want to learn how to transition to road biking.

Nice Russ... It looks like a blast and I think you did a great job of presenting the pros and cons in a balanced way. I just converted a Jones SWB Complete to Soma Oxford bars (so the grip area has more "wrist in rotation" but kept my weight back for the tech sections. So I got to keep the grips and MTB levers but man it was a blast to ride and hecka faster on the road. Between the bar, changeout and some new rubber (Schwalbe G-Ones Allrounds 27.5x2.8s) saved 2.4 lbs... crazy eh? Anway... Kudos on breaking out of the "This is a Jones and you can't change it" because you can!

PS - Switched to the Avid Speed Dial 7s with the stock Tektro Calipers and the brakes are so much better than stock!
how do the Oxford bars handle off road? I've got them on a bike I use for cruising around town, but I haven't done anything off-road with them.
I see so much of the "plus 1" bike reviews and "only one" bike reviews... In contrast, your reviews really reflect a range of bikes to think about depending on the type of riding one does most often. After a lot of research, I am finally down to riding two bikes: a relatively new gravel bike (a Warbird with 650b) and my old full suspension bike. Your videos really helped. Many thanks Russ!

OMG, I love this. I had a 90's Rock Hopper where the drivetrain stopped working. Went 1x9 microshift and love it. I am starting to really like the microshift stuff!

Welcome to a Salsa Fargo! Actually the Fargo can take 29+ tires. Its ma favorite bike ever as I'm able to just ride about anywhere including most mountain bike trails.

That’s funny because I have been spending the last few weeks trying to figure out how to make my Cyclocross bike ride more like my Jones. I finally decided to get rid of the drop bars and go with a Jones bar for the Cross bike and see if I can finally get that bike comfortable to ride, for me.
I think you had a great idea and one I have considered.
Love the experiments lately! Last summer I had an 80s road bike set up with riser bars and a 90s hybrid with drop bars. I remember thinking briefly that it was a little silly to have essentially switched them, but then quickly decided it was fun so I didn't care. Final conclusions for me was that the road bike with riser bars was awesome. The long top tube on the hybrid made drop bars never work quite right so that one is back to full dad-bike hybrid mode.

Whats missing is a dropper post! Russ You hadn't mentioned the Rawland Ulv, (yeah I know you only got that one short ride with it) But really the idea of a drop bar plus bike does make sense for bike packing in the southwest, where there's thousands of miles of VERY sandy and rocky 2 track.
Riser drops on high stack frames needs to be more of a thing. The Fargo tried to introduce this concept. To ride in the drops as a normal hand position. Not speed tucked though.

My go bars are the Cowchipper or WoodChippers from Salsa paired up with cross bar levers. Cross bar levers in addition to drop bar levers make all the difference in the world.
I did this with a Surly Karate Monkey with Salsa Cowchipper bars. Used an slx rear derailleur with a 32t up front and the same bar end shifter. Ran it singlespeed for a while before putting gears on it. Have 29 x 2.1 Mezcals and this bike is a blast! I ran some aero bars on it for a while for some longer planned bikepacking trips to give different hand positions, but took those off a few weeks ago since I'm not doing any long distance currently. Pretty flat where I live but it has been a great setup for gravel roads and just venturing off on backroads.

I was looking at the Jones SWB when a decided on a 2018 Fargo with 27.5 x 3 tires. I wasn’t sure about the drop bars but have been super happy with my choice. I was thinking I might try some wider bars. Mine came with Woodchipper 2s at 44 cm.
Always an advocate for experimentation on fit and performance/handling. I think it's the only true way to translate those spec numbers into the real, in-your-gut sensation of riding. It's also a fun way for me to predict the handling I think you should see at the beginning of your review, and compare it to your reported experience, at the end of the video (this part drives my wife a little crazy).

Hi thank you so much for this video, I have been trying to sell my Jones LWB Spaceframe for the last few years because if discomfort! But after riding my Ritchey Outback V2 for the last few months and then Christmas holidays here in NZ I fitted a spare pair of drop handlebars to my Jones and it's comfortable at last, so thanks 🙂
I've been running Cowchippers on my Pugsley for 2 years. It's amazing how much "sportier" the ride feels with my weight shifted toward the front wheel.
great conversion but not a fan of the shifter cable housing comes out of the drop bar like that.
That setup looks great for day or weekend exploring, where you have a planned route but don’t know what terrain to expect. Save the lighter mounts for when you know what you are getting into.

I've raced MTB with the original hand welded Ti Jones H bars. The top of the H allowed me to tuck in nicely, stretched out forward. Nothing for a gnarly trail but especially since I races this bike singlespeed against gearies, I needed to get up to speed early on a descend and then hide from the wind. In retrospect I wish I'd have invested in dropper posts back then (even if they were sucky) to roll faster and gain range of motion on technical (for my tall ass) descends.
Looking good. It is good to be reminded that the ride feeling of bikes can be changed quite much by just modding it a bit. No need to always have a new bike.
I had a mukluk frame sitting around doing nothing so i put a set of woodchippers on there and set it up single speed. its so much fun to ride.
I really like the look of the Jones bike and especially the Jones bar. But, this video was interesting and fun to watch.
Nice bike. A few years ago I converted a 26" offroader over to 1x1 with drop bars, slicks, mudguards, and V brakes for commuting. I used those Tektro levers but they were poor to be honest. It's now being run in 1x7 with flat bars and the original Shimano brakes.
I really like the Tektro Aries disc calipers that came on my first Jones. So much that I bought two other sets for my other bikes ($29 for a pair, F&R, with rotors). Compared to Avid BB-7's, they are lighter, stiffer, cheaper, and most importantly...quieter. And they use commonly available Shimano pads. My only dislike is the way the outboard pad is adjusted via cable tension, rather than a bolt or thumbwheel.
That outboard pad adjustment is why I ditched em. That's ding-dong design. BB-7s are vastly better brakes - grams be damned.
I like them too after switching to sintered pads. Now I can go way longer without adjusting.

I have my Surly Ogre set up just like this (with 29x2.3 tires), same bars and shifters with Avid BB7s. Previously set up with a Jones bar. Exact same results. Not as trail friendly, great everywhere else. Better for the long miles.
Wondering when this will become the norm 👍🏻 great build up and those microshift bar end shifters are great value as well.

Nice rig. I’m planning on turning my Moonlander into a drop bar configuration, with a very short stem, XXL Soma Condor 2 riser bars, and bar end shifters. With the Moonlander’s touring-like geometry, I think it’ll turn out well.
Nice work, but you should know that mountain bike with drop bars was there for decades and it's called Dirtdrop, good you have discovered it for yourselve.

I don't understand why most people don't route the bar end shifter cables around the handlebars, as with the brake cables. It's what I do, making things much neater ☺
Because sometimes you need a tandem cable to do it.

It looks alot like my 650b+ Surly Karate Monkey w/ On-One drop bars. On many days it's my fav ride. I call it a 'Uber Monster Cross'. I get around the forward on decents feeling by running bar top housing pushing levers inboard of the drop brake levers.

I have the 27.5+ fargo and yes this is simular, however the fargo geometry is a lot more "mountain bike" so it wont behave in exactly the same way. It is relatively high trail and will be more stable and less playful than the Jones SWB

Cool build. In some ways a novelty but a very fun one at that! There's something about jumbo tires that put a smile on ones face! Maybe it's that "rollover everything" capability? I do agree that it would make a a good, ultra rugged drop bar touring bike but it also, depending on tire, it might be a good fat bike alternative, especially with something like drops as there is no shortage of wind in the winter time!
Speaking of drops I like this higher bar position that gets you into the drops and one problem I have with drops is that most people spend very little time in their drops. Is it more efficient in terms of aero? That's hard to say but at least you're more likely to be in a position to get full power on the levers and control on descents, etc...more of what drops are intended for.
And speaking of those levers if those are the RL520's that is what I am running as well on my franken, do it all Giant XC budget build. They are very inexpensive and by the grace of those levers and the also inexpensive yet great quality Microshift shifter, which I also am using, you can avoid brifters and save a big!!! Very different from my control setup but I would take it over the Jones bar setup. Ride on!

I really like the chunky design of a Jones bike, at that point wide tyres become quite silly because a suspension will do far better work but I still think wide tyres look awesome.
You have to admit, however wide the tires, they're lighter than suspension. :-)

That sounds a lot like my bike. Surly ECR medium frame, Shimano deore & XT components (36 & 11/42 10 speed) with Salsa cowchipper handlebars. Microshift 10 speed barend shifter tectro short pull break levers now with TRP spyre was spyke but I know better now lol. WTB KOM I29 rimes with teravail sparwood tires. Haven’t put maxxis 3” wide tires on yet but some day maybe.

I think that was a nice experiment and it may serve as a nice bike for some trails. You need to have a long steer tube on your fork to have room for the spacers to increase your stack height. How many spacers (mm) did you use? The overall look a drop bar that’s higher reminds me of the Salsa Fargo.
Hey Russ, guess I went the opposite; I put some Jones bars in place of drops on my Evasion mostly so I could use some Paul levers and XO shifters. Ooh are those things wide! Anyway it's lots of fun off road but not so much for any distance on the pavement. Now I'm thinking maybe I should try those Ritchey bars, they look pretty crazy. Cave of mediocre ideas?

Seriously Russ, have you ever used road lever with mtb calipers? Although, it may take a little more dialing in, they work about the same or better in some experiences, the lever pull thing is real fake news (if you care about what bike manufactures call "modulation" anyway)! ... Ran bb5 mtb calipers with Ultegra 6800 levers for years on my commuter, no problems after setup, decided to switch to have more pad consistency among my bikes (cx77 calipers), mistake! After 3 set of pads and way too much finicking, I gave up and put some hydro levers (rs865 to m8000 calipers) and haven't looked back! ... Whatever the case, thanks for staying on point, I always enjoy your videos as a positive brake in the news cycle. Cheers :)
What calipers are you running, Russ? Thinking of doing this to my 2013 ogre as well as throwing some 650b on it. Not too worried about having a lower bottom bracket as I won't be using it for technical riding. Mostly gravel and tame trails. There's an idea for "Cave of Bad Ideas", running 650b's on 29er frames. I'll give it a 👍in advance.

Not speed but comfort the best bike for me ever was my 90s diamond back sorrento with drop bars super comfortable
It got too expensive to fix so I bought a new trek 820 and added alt bars super nice 👌 but it doesn't feel as good as my 90s diamondback
Edit: I also have a 80s road bike for longer rides and may be better than the diamondback but it needs a longer stem so I do not know

I have grown a lot since I bought it, so do you have any recommendations on a bar to use for a conversion? Previously I had moved from drop bars to either butterfly bars (road bikes) or Jones bars on my 29+ bikepacking bike (Trek 1120). Now you have me considering conversion to drops for the 1120. How could I have been so wrong?

Those do wander quite a bit at slow speeds, and too harsh riding to be much fun.
