I can say one thing I bought this drone an when I seen the box I was pissed off. I got a hold of Hubsan . They told me lot of things. Your video made me understand I did have the right one H501s-s .I check all you showed and now at least I know now . Thanks for a great video.
I just bought one of these for $150 out the door on ebay. I got the one with the 906 controller! Apparently mines is a S, not SS. Not that I even care, because this drone is WAY COOL! I love the bright LEDs on it! I also have the h109 basic flyer! I really love that one as well.
Yep. The 501S , 501SS and 109S are all very cool drones. I have all three of them as well. If ya didn't know, you can change the LEDs on the 501 from flashing, solid, or not on at all. All you have to do is long press the throttle's lower trim button and they will switch. Having the LEDs on solid is good for orientation purposes... Have fun flying ! :)
The S and the SS both have that option. Fly when No GPS option. It is basically only there for flying in Manual Mode. So if you wanted to, you can perform aerobatics, like flips and rolls, if you put three bladed props on the quad. It will takeoff and fly normally, with that option turned off. But if it loses satellites during flight, bad news !! It is not often that the quad loses satellites during flight but it can happen. So to answer your question, yes I have turned off "Fly when No GPS", to Yes, and flown before. But I highly recommend, you leave it on "NO". It's only there to add the option of Manual and Altitude hold only flights.
...Hi Mark you are a top man for posting this video, I have just bought a Hubsan quad and have been having some teething troubles with it , your video and reading some of the comments have identified it as the H501s-s so now I can with confidence check out and correct what is going wrong................................. thanks......
The 501S-S , is "better" in most cases, than the Original 501S . Small improvements done to the S to make it the SS , overall makes it a better flier. The S had some issues with Flyaways, VRS (toilet bowling) and some others. If I was to buy another one, I would make sure it's an S-S . They get better range, seem to have less issues. So, I'd say that the SS is better.
Life saver. My machine is playing up badly and need re flashing but I am very new to all this. Just found out I have a different machine to the one I thought I had purchased. Lol. Maybe now I can use the correct firmware updates because the H105s would not install no matter what I did? Many thanks.
do you know if there is much of a quality/performance difference between the controller that comes with the two external antennas and the one that you modified to add the external antennas?
Yes, there is a lot of difference. Number one being on the advanced controller, or the one that already has the antennas sticking off the top, has tons of problems with a lot of people's drones flying away and a lot of other issues. That particular controller was not made and designed for the h501s model drone. Get the standard version controller and a good quality aftermarket external antenna modification kit. It will save you so much trouble and hassle. ---> ua-cam.com/video/mK65FPO72Lw/v-deo.html. And ua-cam.com/video/fCibtj-YgRI/v-deo.html.
Hi, sorry, a bit dated for your video, but I have just bought this 'ss, but thought I had received the 's', so now having watched this I can see i have the 'ss. What a wierd way to go for Hubsan. However I have, I think the newer controller, though I am not sure if it is better; smaller, FPV1 is all it says. Do you have any information on this one. Just need to check they are compatible before I run out of send back time to Amazon. The seller just offered me the white version, saying he can send me the white 501ss, with a web link, but the link is a link to a 501s, not ss. So confusing, especially for me; my first drone just to familiarise myself...that didnt happen quickly!
Can u tell me how much bigger is the 109s vs the h501s gust the drone without the stand on it are they the same size I'm trying to buy a case for my 501s but the case is for the 109s will it fit thank u
The 109S is about 3 X bigger then the 501s. Even with the landing legs removed, the quad itself is much bigger. So, it won't fit. Unless, you modified the heck out of the case, no way.
I notice you also have the Pro in the back ground. Which is better the pro or the 501s or even the 501ss:) The pro looks like it goes further and I like the controller more, For a extra £20-30 is it worth going for the Pro?
The Large box in the background is the carrying/box of the H109S X4 Pro. Not the 501S Or SS. The H109S X4 Pro is A Monster H501S/SS . It's a Camera Platform Quad. It has it's #"downfalls"# LOL... Overall, the H109S X4 Pro is a H501S on Steroids, or shall we say 4 times larger. Bigger Motors, Deadly Props, HUGE 11.1 Volt, 7,000 mAh battery, with almost the Exact same FCB as the 501S or SS ! Only difference is that the 109 has a gimble or gimbals (depending on what version you buy--> Low, Medium or High Edition), All 3 are different. The "Low Edition" comes with the H906A Controller and the quad has a One Axis Servo type "Gimbal". Not really a Gimbal, more like a swivel Up and Down. The "Medium Edition" comes with the H906A Controller and a 2 Axis Brushless motor Gimbal. Up Down, Left and Right. The "High Edition" comes with the H7000 Smart, Touchscreen Controller and has a "True 3 Axis Brushless motor Gimbal". Only catch is, that Controller is, by itself $750 US. Same Quad for All 3 Editions, just comes with different equipment. The 501S is in a "Class of its own". Not a camera platform drone, it has a built-in camera that faces downwards slightly, there are 2 versions of the 501S/SS --> Standard Or what Hubsan calls "Advanced, Pro, Or High Edition". The Only Difference is the controller you get. The quad is exactly the same no matter what version you buy. The H901A is the "Standard Controller". The H906A is the "Advanced or some people call it the pro Controller". I call it A Joke ! Tricking people into buying a "Nicer Looking" Controller. Guess What ? Both of those transmitters use the Exact Same Technology. Same Everything. For 1 exception --> The H906A ( Advanced Controller) was made and designed for the h109s X4 Pro. Not the h501ss or SS. All they did was stuck a GPS module inside of it, to make it Parable with the 501S or SS. The only reason it needs a GPS module inside is for follow me mode. The h109s X4 Pro does not have, follow me mode, or orbit fly for that matter. So there is no sense of having a GPS module inside the controller as it is not necessary when flying the h109s X4 Pro. that quad is expensive and is mainly for aerial videography. You can attach a GoPro five hero to the gimbal of any three Editions, and with that you can shoot some very smooth and fluent videos and or still photography shots. Even the stock camera that comes with it is removable it comes right out of the gimbal and it just works, its full 1080P and shoot stills... I'm sorry if I went a little off topic but I'm not sure exactly what you meant in your comment. I always have and still to this day personally recommend the h901a ( Standard Controller) controller if you're going to buy the h501ss. That controller was made and designed for the h501ss. So, it Does outperform the h906a, which was made & designed for the h109s. Doing the very simple external antenna modifications, will get you more range & performance than you will get with the h906a controller and better picture quality, reception, Etc.
I also forgot to mention, the H109S X4 Pro Also comes with a Really Cool 1 axis Gimbal Attachment that can Sturdily Hold a Smartphone or small tablet instead of it's stock camera a GoPro, Or similar camera, Propeller Guards, A Relatively nice charger (Not a Pro Charger, but not a piece of junk). The phone/tablet gimbal attachment is Really Cool. It has Rubber Dampners, it's own separate gimbal and it's really solid. One thing you Must be careful with if, you fly one, it suffers from T.O.D. (Tumble of death), if Flying fast or aggressively in Altitude Hold/ Manual Mode. The props bend and flex under the pressure. This quad is Very Heavy when the flight battery is inside. Master Airscrew Company makes Propellers that are Much more Ridgid and fit the 109. They will give it Extremely better Air Management and Drastically Reduce the T.O.D. or even T.B. effects. I believe that Phantom 3 props fit as well. They're self tightening (Reverse thread to Spin Direction). Not snap and lock like a Mavic or other DJI products. The 109 wasn't really made for "Fast Flying", but Brother, when you let those Huge Motors & Huge Props Spool Up, that quad Is Extremely Fast. Extremely Dangerous as well. If you accidentally hit yourself or someone else, even in a Simple GPS Hold Hover, it's Really going to do some damage ! Hubsan doesn't specify the specs of the motors but Trust Me, they are Wicked Powerful and Big... Thx 4 watching, I have plenty of videos of the 109 in action if you want to see how it performs. It actually flew through a quarrie in 25+ MPH Winds and managed the Killer Winds. It's quite a spectacle to watch that thing fly !!!
Hi Mark.....great video and explanations. I'd love to and am so ready to buy the newer upgrade H501S-S however can't seem to get a straight answer from these Seller's if indeed they are shipping this newer version!!! I don't want to spend $$$ and end up with the original H501S. It's frustrating to say the least. I recently watched a Hubsan employee on UA-cam say this newer version updated drone started being shipped almost 10 months ago in February, 2017. Any additional info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Thomas Pulaski You are 95%likely to receive an H501SS. Unless for some strange reason there is some back inventory of the original h501s and you somehow get shipped that quad, but I highly doubt it. You will for sure get the new H501SS if you order from GearBest. I have heard that Banggood is now actually telling people that they are now Distributing H501SS'... I "personally" recommend GearBest, due to the fact that I have bought 5 drones and lots of other equipment from them and everything has always functioned properly and was not damaged. The bottom line is, you Will receive an H501SS from almost any Large distributor. However, eBay and even Amazon can be deceiving ! Where were you looking to purchase one from???? Also, thank you very much for your compliment on the video ! :) P.S. The video that was put on UA-cam by hubsan showing the differences between the two, was a month late. The H501SS was released in February of 2017, but I believe it was to Replace the Original H501S...
Boy was i pissed when received the SSH. Abandoned consumer quads and went to build my own racing quads where I control every aspect. Anyway, took it out of the closet last year and started flying it. Still butthurt about the bait and switch by wonky hubsan execs but the quad flies great and everything still works. I got the advanced controller and the old compass you have to calibrate. Thanks for the videos. ❤
I saw your video last year which was helpful to identify SS vs. S model. I have the SS that came in the black box and wanted to know which is the best modification for both external antennas? Which mods do you use on your SS? THX
Mark I just found your video here on the differences between the two, after checking you are exactly right mine came in a box just like yours.Box said 501s but drone is a 501ss..I would like to thank you for answering my question on your other video.Thank You..one more question and I won't bug you anymore do I need to register this drone with the FAA Thanks
It's been 2 months since you posted this. Have you had any issues with the Hubsan? I was going to buy one today, but a couple of guys on a forum as well as a UA-camr who seems to know a lot about the H501S said, "Avoid Hubsan!"
+Michael Preyer I Have Not had any problems with any of the 3 Hubsan Quads I have. Besides getting more OEM LiPos. Those don't last forever. Otherwise my Original h501s has flown great for almost 2 years, Same with my H109S X4 Pro, and my newer H501SS has been Problem Free for nearly 3 months. About 300 flights with the H501S, 200 with the H109S X4 Pro, and about 30 with the H501SS.
I thought mine was 501s but after checking what you said mines 501ss but mine has the pro controller, Since this one has a different motherboard can you use a phone and app with it?
Mark, Thank You so much for this video. I did not know any of the upgrades. I just ordered a 501s from Smithbuy and hoping this is now an SS. Says comes with a sun shield and rechargeable battery for the controller. This must be a SS am I right? Just ordered it today. This is my first drone and am a now new subscriber to your channel. Thanks bud!
+Robert Skillings Thanks for the sub ! Yes, if you just purchased an H501S & it's coming with a sunscreen & Lipo for the controller, you are 90% Likely going to receive an H501SS. The Only Reason I say "90%" is because I'm not familiar with Smithbuy. I'm almost positive you will get an H501SS. If not, then you got an Awesome Original H501S with Free Parts ! Any which way, you win bud ;😉
If you have the newer model, where you don't have to perform a compass calibration before every flight, perform a manual compass calibration and an IMU calibration. If that doesn't help, you may need to ReBind your controller to your quad. Whenever you change flight locations, it's Very important to perform a compass calibration because of the difference in the earth's magnetic declination.
Ty for this. mine is the same. The bar code shows h501s-s...wow but I updated my cam modual the original showed h501a ...if the motherboard was a h501a you would see wifi on your phone..but it dont..do far
Eazy Red Yes. The SS seems to be a little better at certain Functions than the Original H501S. Longer Range, Better GPS Stability, Faster, Etc. Watch some recent videos of mine of the SS. That should give you an idea. I ALWAYS Recommend getting the STANDARD Edition !! That comes with the H901A Controller. Larger Screen Controller. All you have to do is the Antenna Mods and you will be Very Happy !! The "High" Or Advanced Version where it comes with the H906A controller, I Really Do Not Recommend
Nice video, I just bought 2 last month me and my friend. We r happy Great drone . But if the camera has small gimbal like the dji Spark then it will hit market almost less than half of spark prices.
+Mohamed Habib Definitely !! I was hesitant at first because of the changes Hubsan made to the Original H501S, but after Many Test Flights, I really do think they perform Better than the Original H501S. A Gimbal would be Great. You can buy a "Gimbal" type attachment for them, but it's not like an Actual Real Gimbal.. Agreed ! Great Quads !
They switched the motherboard of the S with the motherboard of their new model A, left out the wifi board and who knows what else, new firmware. We were essentially beta tester full paying customers at that point. I felt betrayed. I had saved money for a while, read all the reviews, was ready for modding and BAM. I get this Frankenstein. I paid top dollar in 2017 and got the "Advanced version". I had problems from the start, called them and was told I was possibly going to have charges for service. I abandoned it in the closet to this day. Pity, the quad bodies are gorgeous.
Just bought an "H501S". Should be here tomorrow. It's standard btw. What should I expect? Heard somewhere that you get a li-po with the controller? Kinda confused.
rainbowunicat2006 5/17 Hey there. If you recently purchased and h501s you should receive an H501SS. Unless you bought it from somewhere that specifically specified it was an Original h501s. Anyways, Yes you should Receive a LiPo (7.4V 1400mAh 1C ) Battery for the controller. It should be inside the battery compartment. You should also receive a Sunscreen for the controller that fits perfectly. It's 4 pieces you snap together. Also should have a little camera filter, just like in this video.
rainbowunicat2006 5/17 First, thank you for the compliment of the videos. I try my best... If you have any further questions or concerns feel free to ask! Thanks :)
Mike P It's Basically just a tinted lens for the camera so it doesn't pixelate when pointed towards very high light. Like direct sunshine. It also is supposed to reduce the jello wobble effect a little bit because it has a little bit of foam attached to it.
Mike P ND (Neutral Density) Filters are used to reduce the amount of light which enters the camera to enable a longer duration of exposure. Think of them as a pair of shades for your drone’s lens. They are commonly used to highlight movement, like (taking shots of a waterfall) or to give busy images a softer more surrealist appearance. These filters can also be used to support larger apertures, producing sharper images or a shallower depth of field. The fish eye lens on the SS can give the appearance of sometimes unwanted video and picture Images.
It could be. It depends on where you bought it from and when. When Hubsan first released the 501SS, did try to make it to stink to from the original 501S, by changing the packaging and the Box. During this time, a lot of distributors we're mixing things up and or just putting a drone in any box with any type of either cardboard or plastic inside. About 4 months after Hubsan released the SS, they did make a video showing the differences in not only the packaging but the barcodes and the firmware as well. So at this point, it could be correct, or not... I do know for sure the original S, came in a white box, like the one in the video, with a molded plastic insert, to hold the propellers and the quad. The SS should come in a black box and have a rectangular cardboard "tray" type thing in there, where the controller sits on the bottom, underneath the quad and propellers.
@@danisfishing9013 Could have just been a leftover box or something. The Little, square QR code stickers on the quad & the controller, should have "H501S" or "H501S-S" on them. Another way you can tell which quad you have is by looking at the Firmware Versions. (In your menu, with the quad powered On). It will say in Red Letters H501S V_._._ Or H501S-S V_._._ . If your concerned about the box, it could just be that the seller Has Multiple 501's and doesn't pay attention, to what box should be used. Or, he or she only has white boxes... Ya know ??
@@MarkSuttner my drone came and it had black motors I thought they are meant to be gold and they are smaller anyway I order another from a different person please tell me if this is meant to be correct
@Dani fishing TV Absolutely Not Correct. The motors should definitely not be black. Every part of your drone, should look identical to the one in this video. Unless you ordered the black and gold color mix instead of the white and gold. even if you ordered the black and gold drone, the motors are still gold, not black. I also was on Amazon, I couldn't even find a seller named "Rosa Drone". I'm not sure what you have because the motors are definitely not black. And the boxing is incorrect, from what you're describing. If you buy one from Amazon, it should say: "By Hubsan". Try to stay away from sellers that aren't the actual "Hubsan" company. It would help if I could see a picture of your drone. From what you are describing, I do not think you got a Correct h501s. How much did you pay for it? If you paid less than $150-$200, you may have bought a fake. The prices for the standard h501s, (a Real One) -> From $169.99 to $220.00 US. There is a black stripe around the middle portion of the motors, but you can barely see that, because of the shell. The upper part of the motors where you put the propellers on, should be Gold. This video may help --> ua-cam.com/video/MSwpmAh2wRQ/v-deo.html
I just Received my H501S (10/2/2018), and it was interesting to note that I got the apparently 'Deluxe' model FPV1 controller. It's bigger than the one in your video (also chrome rings around the 2 sticks). Yours looks more like the H502S controller, but with the 2 external antenna connections. My controller does have the 8 AA battery holder, but I have a 1000 MaH battery on the way to me. I'm happy I got the bigger and more substantial controller instead of the el-cheapo version. The BCL on the drone and on the controller both says H501S-S- H. Mine came via Amazon from seller Tom Top. Unlike E-Bay, you can't tell who the actual seller is until the package arrives & you see the return address.
You received the H501SS quad with the H906A (Advanced Controller). I have that Controller as well. It's not really that great (in my personal experiences) with using it. The Stock "Hubsan" Panel Antenna is only 6dBi . It's not going to be able to get Long Range FPV capabilities, unless you put a Higher dBi Aftermarket Panel on it. Anyways, The H906A/Advanced/FPV1 Controller also is used with the H109S X4 Pro (Low & Medium Edition). I have Multiple other videos showing Maximum FPV Range using the FPV1/H906A Controller. I personally only was able to reach about 1,000 Meters and maintain FPV Signal. However, Using the "Standard Controller"/H901A/FPV2, I was able to reach 2,357 Meters Range With Absolutely Perfect FPV Reception. If you look, you'll see the other videos I'm referring to. Unbelievable to be able to fly 2,357 Meters Away & the quad made it back using RTH with 1 Flight Battery ! It was about a 22 minute flight !! I hope you have a great time with your H501SS !! :)
Lorenzo Giorgi The Advanced Controller (H906A) / FPV1 Controller has been Known to come with faulty/ breaks in the 2.4 & 5.8 Coax Cables. Also the FPV Screen is Very Small. It may be 1080P, however, using a Full 1080P FPV Screen, Requires More 5.8 GHz signal strength to display. The Standard Controller (H901A) has a Way bigger FPV Screen. It is 720P, unlinke the"Advanced Controller". But guess what ? If your Receiver is using 720p, it Requires Less 5.8 Signal than the 1080p's Receiver's 5.8 Signal. That means, You will get Better & Longer Range Reception with with the Standard 720p Controller. Also, You can't even barely tell the difference between 720p & 1080p when looking a FPV Screen. That's 1 of about 10 reasons I always use/ recommend the Standard Controller. All the same Functions, and if you didn't know this, the H906A(Advanced Controller) was actually Made & Designed for the H109S X4 Pro, Not the 501s models. Ttyl. Might want to trust someone who has 10 Hubsan quads.
I read online (also on yt) that the advanced versione has better control range, much better than the standard one. Is this false? I'm very confused, a lot of version. I know that 1080p fpv is useless, the screen is too small. About the advanced controller, are you saying that is broken out of factory? Sorry for my English.
Lorenzo Giorgi the farthest long-range flight I have seen was done with the standard controller. I'm sure people have modified both the quad and the controllers by putting signal boosters on the antennas and so forth. I'm not trying to say that the advanced controller comes broken from the factory, I was just trying to emphasize that a lot of times it gets damaged during shipping because antennas sticking out of the top. I have both of the controllers and would prefer the standard controller over the advanced controller any day. Mainly because the screen is way too small. Orientation is hard enough with the 501s. Having a small screen makes it even harder. If hubsan was to put a larger screen on the advanced controller, then maybe I would prefer it.
Mine came in a white box... it says H501S but the little QR barcode says H501S-S, but it did not come in a black box... it is the black drone but it came in a white box, identiacal to that black box you got, but white!
That's exactly what I expected to find out when I patiently waited for him to finish talking about the different print and labels. Apparently, he also doesn't know the difference between the H501S, H501SS, and H501S pro.
Sorry, I never saw your comment / question. As Toxic said, yes the SS does get further range than the Original S. Both 2.4 and 5.8 TX & RX Signals. 1 year ago, wow. Sorry, I really never saw your question.
Brandon Haynes I'm going to try and get them finished as soon as possible. I was hoping to publish at least one or two videos tonight. The wife has other plans for me sometimes if you know what I mean... LOL I'm not sure that they are all that fantastic, I was able to do 3 function test flights in which one of them I forgot to hit the stop record and nothing saved, 1 is in High Light & Wind (17 mph), the other is in Low Light and Low Winds (7-10 mph). I have other videos as well, I just don't want to publish a 20 minute video of the thing flying... Soon as I can bro !
Mark Suttner I just want to say thank you for always putting out videos of the hubsan Mark you really do a good job at explaining things in detail so for that you have my vote👍
I'm not sure exactly what you are referring to when you say, software updates. If you are referring to the drones firmware, the S has different firmware than the SS. Firmware for the S , is not compatible with the SS and SS firmware is not compatible with the S either. The SS has a different FCB and Camera Module.
Hey Mark this is your ole buddy anyshitt, hey bud I just got a h501a the one that coms with the stupid wi fi amp, I was told it's fpv can also work 5.8 gz, so I got one and tried to bind it to and old 501s standard controller,,,It's binds to the tx right away. but after that it does not arm the motors; no matter what I do? I bind the controller, I calibrate everything. then the controller says I have on average of 1o satilites each.. the lights go solid, and then nothing.. I can not get the dang thing to arm..
Alter Ego Wutup Brother !? Long time... What is happening is the H501A also uses Wi-Fi for its 2.4 RX ! You can't use 2.4 gigahertz transmission to control it. I don't even know how you got it to bind to the quad ? You have to use your smartphone or tablet to control that thing. If it says it can use 5.8 for video, that is probably only for a ground monitor or something...
Alter Ego Hey Bro, I was thinking more about what you said and forgot that somebody already asked me about the same exact thing. The H901A (Standard Controller) Will Bind to the H501A Quad, however it will not fly it. The quad has a different FCB then the 501's and 502's. They use a different TX receiving board so it only will function using the controller that comes with it and your device. It won't function with the h501s standard controller or even the h906a advanced controller. It is specifically setup to use your devices Wi-Fi and pair with that. Weird hey? I know this because I confirmed it with Hubsan awhile ago. How you doing these days ? BTW, how many bugs do you have? LOL! Bro, I'm losing track of all the MJX quads you have !!! Those High Intensity LED'S you put on your quads are Badass Bro !!!
Alter Ego Hey Bro, I might have been wrong about using the 501s Standard Controller with the H501A. Some people state that you can use it and some people say you cant. Maybe you have to use a controller that was meant for the newer SS ? Different Firmware than the OG "S"... IDK bro...
Hello. Is there any problem with camera module because of heat from battery? How much battery really heats? Is possible to put some non heating material around the battery(at least bottom part). Ceramics, wood, even paper,... not good conducting the heat. At battery wires is good to mark which are from battery and which are from quad. With that can prevent confusion which are ones. For example to put some isolate tape on one wires, or mark the red wire with felt-tip. If I will buy this drone, will definitely mark wires. Anyway. Very good channel, can find very good informations here. (Y)
Bobby Fillettcky First, thank you for your compliment. As for the battery, it does heat up during Flight. That is normal for All LiPo batteries. There may be a problem if you try to put something underneath the battery because it is such a tight fit already. The OEM battery dimensions are just enough, for it to fit inside the quad. It would be Hard to put something underneath the battery unless it is very thin. The battery heats up under "normal " flight --> GPS Hold Flying, Etc. Sometimes the battery can get extremely hot if you are flying aggressively --> Altitude Hold, Manual Mode, Etc. The outside temperature also has a big impact on how warm the battery will get. However, the h501s has pretty good Heat Dissipation Venting Slits in the shell. So, as long as you give the quad time to cool down properly in between flights, the video Module should be OK... It is also not a good idea to constantly be pulling on the wires of the battery to get it out. Some people use two pieces of tape and put that on the battery so they can pull on the Tape Instead of the Wires to get it out. When you first get your quad New, you have to pull on the wires to get it out because there is no other way unless you use a needle nose and pull on the actual battery itself. Anyways, That Big CE Rating Sticker, on the bottom of the H501SS Does Cover Some Venting Slits that are Directly below the Video Module. So, I'm either going to Remove it, OR Just cut holes in the sticker where the vents are, so it can Cool Properly.
Thank you Mark. You always made great descriptions(I read comments at some other your videos :) ). To put a tape on battery looks very good idea. Much better then to pull wires. (Y) It's sounds almost must do it. :) I checked a lot of comments about H501SS and for now didn't find if anyone have problem with overheating the video module, even in warm weather. So looks that works O.K. Also chips are turned to venting slits and are cooling. On other side of board is probably just solder tin, which can't be damaged. But as always is better to be prepared. At Hubsan H501S is everything possible. ;) Also another thing about battery. Probably is not good to cover it as I though first(I speak for common use), cause also battery needs much possible space to cooling and some low heat conducting material would keep heat inside the battery what would reduce number of times that can be charged/recharged. This was total my fault to think about somethin like this. Definitely is good to careful remove CE Rating Sticker and save it for any guarantee issue and in such situation put it back. :) After all I saw H501SS looks that works now very good. So it's time on sellers to put it for about 140€(165$) price. Cause what is under 150€ we need just to pay VAT and some custom costs. At over 150€ is also custom duty which can be even 33% of the price. I hope on Black Friday. (Y)
Bobby Fillettcky Yes, the flight battery needs some air around it to help cool it during use. When I made this video, I was just looking at how close the video module is to the battery and was "wondering" if it could get hot enough, (under certain circumstances), to damage the module. I was not completely sure that it would damage the module, it was just a thought. I can tell you have been doing research on the H501SS. That is a good thing to do before you buy anything, especially a drone. Heat is the worst enemy of any LiPo battery. It's kind of nice when I get to fly my drones here in Wisconsin during the winter because it's cold outside which keeps Everything Cool. The Battery, ESC's, Motors, Etc. Cold Air also can increase flight times. When I received my first H501S it was during the winter. I was getting 30 minute flight times with the h501s and 45 minute flight times with the h109s X4 Pro !! I would not expect that when their Batteries were brand-new because any LiPo battery will not reach its full potential until around 6-10 Proper* discharge and charge cycles. You should always use a professional charger/discharger as well. Also, cold, dense air increases rotor lift. That makes it easier for the quad to stay airborne without using as much power, contributing to longer flight times. I did make a video on how to properly maintain LiPo batteries. ua-cam.com/video/EXd-RUPbbWY/v-deo.html
There isn't a huge difference between the S and the SS but personally I've had better range and performance from the SS. However, firmware versions have a lot to do with both of their performances.
Completely wrong ? I just ordered a H501S black ( white) with advanced controler ( standard) from Banggood ( Gearbest) ... Do I have to be afraid to receive my new drone ? I just read too there is a H601S coming this year ...
R G I Really Don't Understand what you are saying... Are you saying you ordered a Black & Gold 501s Standard? Or Advanced? From Gearbest or Banggood? They do not make a Black & White 501s. They make Black & Gold Or White & Gold. If you just purchased Either One, the 501s "Standard" or "Advanced" from Gearbest, you "Should" get a H501SS. They fly Great ! Nothing to worry about. I've Heard Bad & Good Things about Banggood, Mostly Bad. GearBest also has complaints from people, However, I've Never Personally received Anything from Gearbest that was damaged or Faulty. Not sure if that's what you were asking. ??
Sorry for the misunderstanding. I have ordered a H501S black&gold advanced from Banggood and I see that your advice is H501S white&gold standard from Gearbest. So I have done everything wrong and I am afraid to be disappointed with my new drone ...
R G You Should be All Good ! Don't worry about what "You Might Get".. I guess I made you misinterpret what I was trying to say. I was only saying that I buy from GearBest only. Other people have perfect flying drones from banggood. Relax Brother ! The SS is a Great Quad !! You should have No problems, you may want to replace the stock hubsan panel antenna with a 14dbi antenna. Depends on what kind of flying you want to do. If you want 360 degree fpv reception you should get a Cloverleaf or a Spironet for FPV. You'll be Fine ! The only reason I prefer the standard controller over the advanced controller is because of the screen size and firmware issues / problems that can come with your Advanced controller.
R G No. You should be Just Fine ! You should receive a SS . They are very nice flyers. If you want to do Long Range Flights, I would suggest getting a better 5.8 Antenna. The stock Hubsan Panel Antenna is 6 dBi. It won't give you Exteme Range. But if you're just starting to fly quads, Remember to keep the Reception side and the Panel Antenna Pointed Directly at the quad. I'm thinking you are going to be Very Impressed with the SS. Only thing that's a bother is the Tiny FPV Screen on the H906A (Advanced Controller). It's really small. You should also Really get to know how the Controller Works as well. Unlike the H901A (Standard Controller) it is kind of complicated. I Hope you get a SS with the Latest Firmware. ;) Trying to "Update Firmware" on the H906A Controller Is Extremely Difficult and Frustrating. When you get your quad, Do a "Beta" test Flight. Keep it Low & Slow to Make Sure every single function works correctly. Don't try to do a long-range flight right away as soon as you get it, don't try altitude hold flying, because it's Very Hard. Keep it in GPS hold and test every function. If everything works correctly, then slowly proceed to flying the way you want it to fly brother.... Always make sure all the functions are working correctly before you go and do long-range flights or whatever you plan to do, just make sure the thing is functioning properly.
Gotta say this was very informative and helpful! I have a h501s and the memory card slot does not record any more probably cuz the battery kept over heating it like you said. But I want to buy another and saw the h501s-s and didn't know what that meant so thank you!
Ian Rice It could be your Micro SD card. You probably know they can only record onto 16 GB Max cards. No larger. Not 32 or 64 GB cards. I found that Micro SD cards tend to wear out after awhile. Say you record stuff until the card is full, then transfer/copy the Recordings to a Hard Drive or Flash Drive. In order to remove the data from the Same Card you have to Manually Delete videos and or pictures to make room for More Recordings. Or Format it again to Delete Everything. After a few times doing that, the card can start to have a "Digital Memory" and Won't Accept Data Anymore. Also, after taking the card in and out of the quad then putting it into a reader, over & over, starts to Wear Out the metal contacts on the card and the metal contacts inside the Quad's Video Module. Usually the card goes bad first. Maybe it is your Micro SD card that is the Problem ?? Or the connection between the two??? Oh, BTW... The H501SS / H501S-S is a Greatly Improved Quad. Mine has been flying Excellent !! Thanks !!
Mark Suttner I thought it might be the SD card also. But I have 5 different memory cards that work with my other drone and action camera. So it wasn't the memory card but thank you for all that help! Tea I'm thinking about getting another one. My fiance is getting me the phantom 3se for Xmas but you know us drone pilots can't have just one drone. Lol. I just might have to get the h501s-s version. You have me curious to see how much better it is. Thanks again!!
Ian Rice The New H501SS has been flying pretty Well for me, so far. I have only been able to fly it about 6 times because of work, crappy weather and now it gets dark by the time I get off work, so I have to try to find time on the weekends or in between... The Phantom 3 standard edition is a nice drone. I used to have a phantom 3 Advanced Edition. I ended up selling it because in order to fly it, you must use a smartphone or tablet to connect to the controller and login to the DJI app. That thing has restrictions, and a lot of times won't even let you fly it. That was an annoyance, so I try to stay away from App controlled quads. Have you ever checked out the H109S X4 Pro ? Upair 1 ? Those are camera platform drones that don't use apps. That's just a couple of many... I have a Few videos of the H501SS published. What's kind of strange about the H501SS is when your flying it, sometimes it looks (from the ground) like it may have a bit of Jello Wabble or Your Video Will End up looking like crap. However, when you get home and watch the Actual Recording, the video doesn't show any of that. I Love the Original H501S, but become more Impressed with the H501SS Everytime I fly it... I would buy another one, but I now have 2 Original H501S' (One Advanced, One Standard), an H501SS Standard, an H109S X4 Pro (1 Axis Gimbal with the FPV1 Controller), a couple Mini quads, 5 Helicopters and more... My Fiance would kill me if I bought another one. We just bought our first home... Anyways, I know what you mean about having more than 1 quad !! It's like an Addiction, LOL... Anyways, I am curious to know how long you've had your quad until it stopped recording ? Thanks !
+Mickey Gmx Yes, the H501S-S can record onto a 32GB Max Micro SD card. (Usually the "Advanced Version"). Unless that changed to the Standard Version as well. Not Sure. The H501S NOT the H501S-S can Only record onto a maximum of 16 GB Micro SD card. Also the T-Flash (micro SD cards) Must be High Quality. Fast Read & Write Speeds.
Your assuming the metal is not a heat shield. Often metal is there for just that. Metal is more expensive than plastic and weighs more. Usually there is a good reason metal is used.
Hello. The Thin metal module cover, is not a "heatshield". It's there for a reason, but it's not intended to be a heatshield. It's just protection for the tiny capacitors, resistors, transistors, chips, etc that make up the cameras module. It's a "Toy Grade" $200 quad. It's not the greatest design. But it does work. This video was made quite some time ago, since then I have been having Many successfull flights with the h501ss. However multiple times, the video Would Not stop Recording, then All Video footage was Lost. I'm not sure if the heat dissipation from the LiPo battery is to blame or not... However the times it wouldn't stop recording was after a Full 20 + Minute flight, meaning the battery was pretty warm. Other people are having the same problem. No matter what you do, pressing the video button so it stops and saves the footage, Doesn't work, not sure why it happens. Anyways, Thank You for your comment, appreciate it very much ! :)
Wow, An Original S ? I can't believe there are still some left ! That's Almost, Unbelievable ! Hubsan made the H501SS, to replace the H501S. They did it (Secretly), because of many Problems they had with the S, that could Not be fixed by Firmware Updates. I'm Very Curious to know what Firmware Version Configurations your setup came with ! Seriously ! I'm really interested, if you would, please let me know the Controller & Quad's Firmware numbers. "RX, TX, FC"..... Thx :)
+Rachmat Virgo If you bought an h501s from gearbest in the beginning of December 2017, you will receive an h501ss. If you bought the standard version, it will come with a sunscreen for the controller, a lipo battery for the controller and also a spare filter for stable image under high light for the camera. Same things that I unboxed in this video. If you look closely on the gear best website, it does now say "Upgraded Version". That just means it is an h501ss.
Hi, Mark something I do not understand my drona has a QR Code and writes the H501S-S and has another tag that says Model No..H501S, and the controller has QR Code and writes just like the QR Code H501S-S drones, and on the X4 AIR H501S, the X4 AIR H501S, I looked inside the drones where the battery was plugged and I saw a green plaque on it write the H501A-CAM V60, now the real H501S or h501S-S ... Thank you
Yes, You have a H501S-S . The drone has 2 stickers (tags), #1 is the "Model H501S" , #2 is the Small Barcode (tag) H501S-S. All the SS drones have Two labels. Your Controller will also have a lable (tag) that has FCC ID, Model ID and required details. You have the H501S-S. The reason the stickers write "Model H501S", is because that's the Actual Manufacturers ID. All the 501's, say "Model H501S", That's the Shell /Frame ID. The difference between the Drone's, is the electronics, Inside. Understand ?? "Model H501S" is just referring to the Frame, basically.
You have a H501SS or H501S-S . The older, original, H501S drones, are not being made by Hubsan anymore. The H501SS Replaced the H501S. The print is just the "Model ID". A lot of Different Drones, all have "H501S" printing on them. It's just what they named it. The electronics inside, the firmware and Different kinds of Controllers, are what makes the drones Different. All H501S Models, (501S, 501S-S, 501A, Etc), all have that printed on them, for manufacturing identification. If I could send you a picture, To explain better. I would. You have a 501SS
@@MarkSuttner I wonder if I want to change firmware, I do not know how to search for firmware for H501S or H501SS, I want my drona to rise up but is limited to 250m if it was not limited to 250m it was superin 'rest all works ..... Thanks for your time
@@MarkSuttner I checked the version on the controller and it appears so write in white V4.2.36 LCD V1.3.3 after that writes in red H501S V2.1.50 FC V1.1.46 CAM V30.84.84, If I modify the FC V1.1.46 Firmware and leave the flash again modified, do I have to flash the controller again? Of course the same Firmware .. Thanks
Michael Caliri If that is your First GPS Quad, make sure you know the Main things that are Very Important. Flight Environment, Potential Signal Interferences, Correct Compass Cals, Etc. Many Videos are on UA-cam that show all of these things. I made Several covering A Lot of things, along with Many Other People. Good Luck & Happy Flying ! (When you get a chance) :)
Marcus Vickers That Is Completely Normal. You should really never let the quad descend automatically when you hit RTH. It will almost always go into a VRS (Vortex Ring State) / Toilet Bowl Effect. Or, it will wobble so much it will flip over. You can let it fly back to you during rth, but always turn RTH OFF and descend it manually in GPS hold to avoid problems. Almost everybody has that issue with their 501s. The problem is caused because the propellers are too flimsy and are too long in length.
Marcus Vickers Yes. I would recommend the H501SS Any day of the week. I would also Recommend Buying from Gearbest. I don't know what it is about GearBest, but I have Never Had Any Problems with Any Products from them. In fact, Every Quad I've purchased from Gearbest, came with the Latest & Best Firmware Versions Stock, never had to "Upgrade" anything, etc. As for the Stock Propellers... They are made so the quad can fly stable in GPS Hold. The 501's are designed for Aerial Videography, which includes the props design. They are slightly Long, making the quad Stable when Flying in GPS Hold, However has Drawbacks. Because of the props, the quad has a hard time with "Air Management". It Wobbles Bad when Descending. You Really have to Descend Slowly and Keep an eye on your FPV Screen, to make sure it's not wobbling Too Much. Also, if you fly the 501's Very Fast (Altitude Hold or Manual Mode), Sometimes they will go into a Tumble of Death during Flight. Because the props start to Flex and wobble, causing the quad to become very Aerodynamically Unstable leading to a Crash. You can replace the stock propellers with all different kinds of props. Some have more Ridgity, which means they Will Not Flex and wobble under Extreme Pressure, giving it way better Air Management. Their are also 3 bladed shorter props (length wise), that you can put on. Those props can actually enable the quad to do 3D Acrobatics. Flips, Rolls, Etc. However, that type of flying is Very Hard on the Quad. It Over Works the Motors, ESC's and Really Can Flex the Entire Shell / Body of the quad. Anyways, getting props that have a little more Ridgity will Definitely Help with Wobble and or T.O.D.. Master Air Screw Company Makes Multiple Types that fit perfectly, Other Companies as Well... So, Yes... Getting props that are slightly more Ridgid will Remedy this problem.
One more thing. Mine will sometimes do weird jerking motions to the left or right when ascending inn gps. It feels like it could almost flip but doesn't. I guess that could have to do with what you said earlier. It usually happens in windy conditions.
Marcus Vickers Yes, Exactly Correct. Windy Conditions Are the #1 Cause of Wobbling, VRS, And Especially During RTH Descent. The 501's Are Extremely Leight weight. They Cannot Handle Windy Conditions. Too Lightweight. Recommended Flying Winds for these quads are 0-5 MPH Winds ! That's Damn Near Impossible ! When your Flying in 5 + MPH winds, that's where Problems Start Happening. I push the envelope Sometimes and fly in 10-15 MPH Winds, However that's Really Pushing the Limitations of the quad ! Especially when using Autonomous Functions (GPS, Circle Fly, Follow, and Especially RTH). Bigger quads, like the H109S X4 Pro, 3DR Solo, Yuneec Q500, Etc (Much Larger Quads can handle winds because of their weight and Most Importantly their Center Of Gravity.
DRONE SA FORCE I agree ! I obviously have both as well, as you can see. The SS is definitely more stable than the Original S. I can also get longer range with the SS. I did a few videos on functions with the SS compared to the S, and a couple long-range fpv tests with the SS. My S can get about 1500-1700 meters FPV Range. My SS can get 2300 + meters ! I have a recent video showing the SS going 2,307 meters out and a RTH with Perfect FPV ! I couldn't get that much range with my original h501s... Hubsan seems to have Stepped Up Their Game & Quality Control !!
Jonathan D Photography19 Yep.. That's Correct. Same "Features" like Orbit, and RTH Forwards. However, the SS has an H501A FCB & Camera Module inside. The SS Performs/Flies Better than the Original H501S (with Any Kind of Firmware Versions). I have both. Original H501S with Superflyer Firmware, and the H501SS. I guess Hubsan was Right when they made the minor changes. The H501SS is Way More Stable in GPS Hold, Fights wind better, doesn't make so many "FCB Errors/ Overcorrections", Etc. It basically just seems to be a better bird. Thanks for your comment & watching :)
@mark suttner Sorry for me asking, I have an h501ss and when you mention H501SS having H501A FCB, does that mean the H501SS can be controlled by the X-Hubsan android/app using the H501A camera/wifi board?
Richard Chua Hey Richard. Even though the H501SS has H501A camera Module & Motherboard, it is configured differently. It puts out live 5.8 GHz FPV, and has a 2.4Ghz receiver module. So the WI-FI signal would Not Control the H501SS. The quad is Very Similar, however it would not be able to be controlled by WiFi. The H501SS Needs an actual Controller to Bind with to function. It's FCB has been changed, but it was integrated into the Original H501S Configuration. It even has its own separate firmware versions that are different from the original h501s. By the way, I'm happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability so there's no reason to be sorry for asking... :)
Doni Franklin The SS is what Hubsan considers the "Upgraded" H501S. The SS has been a Better flyer than my Original S. So, in my own personal opinion, the SS flies better than the S. The only way you could buy an original h501s, is if you either buy it from a 3rd party vendor like eBay, Amazon, Etc & the seller Specifically says it is a H501S. Or I have talked with a few people who have recently purchased one and actually received an "S" model, that must have been Excess or forgotten inventory from somewhere. If you purchase from somewhere like Hubsan itself or gearbest or banggood, etc, you Should get the "SS" model regardless.
WARI,S IDEAS Still editing Flight videos. This H501SS came with the Newest Firmware Versions, and flies Perfect ! I was Amazed ! Damn Near Better than my Original H501S. Not so much the camera, but not a biggie. Thanks Bro !!
do you need H501S lipo battery ? there are many good quality and lower price, if you like , you could see the below link: www.aliexpress.com/store/product/2017-Good-Quality-Hubsan-H501S-X4-RC-Quadcopter-Spare-Parts-7-4V-2700mAh-10C-Rechargeable-Battery/2782033_32811277632.html?spm=2114.12010612/itm2home-1.0.0.35223ae0FDx7bc
Michael Caliri You don't "Download" the Version. Unless you are trying to "Upgrade". Your Versions are Shown in the Menu. Before Flight Menu, you access with the Controller. For the Standard Controller, Hold Down on Throttle and at the same time Push the Right Stick like a Button. Advanced Controller, Hold Throttle Down & press Enter. That will bring you to the Menu. Both the Quad and Controller must have power (Just have battery plugged in). Go to the bottom of The Menu where it says "Show Version". That's where you can see what Versions you have....
I have Hubsan x4 H501S in the controller I can never get the P or R to be less than 1 although I did the calib compass 1 & 2 successfully I have heard that if you cannot get P or R to be less than 1 the HUBSAN will not ascent vertically .Im not able to fly the drone yet . Please help .
The "P" & "R" is the Pitch and Roll readings coming from the IMU's and Gyro sensor. You should be able to fly even if the pitch and roll readings are not at 0 degrees. It is better to have them both at 0 degrees, but it is not absolutely necessary. When you plug in the flight battery, the quad must be on a flat level surface. That is what sets the Pitch and Roll readings. If the quad is Unlevel, when you plug in the battery, you are going to have Pitch and Roll readings, that are way above 0 degrees (3° Above or Below 0°), that's not good. You should be able to fly, even if you're Pitch & Roll readings, are not 0° . You do have to arm the propellers, before you can take off, if you did not know that. To do that, you have to move both control sticks all the way down and Out , or both Down and In, to the Bottom Right Or Left Corners, at the same time. The propellers will start to spin, that's "Arming" the props. Then, you can take off. If you are not able to fly because your pitch and roll are not perfectly at 0°, something is wrong. Make sure you don't move the quad while you plug in the battery as well.
@@MarkSuttner Thank you for your nice reply, I did plug the battery of the Drone following your instructions. The Drone was on a flat surface. I tried many different flat surfaces and each time I got a number between 5 and 12 for pitch and roll . I was able to arm the propellers and start the motor. Because of the weather I havent taken it outside. I just flew it inside very quickly as not to hit anything, and there was not a strong enough satellite gps for the remote and zero for the drone.I just want to make sure there is nothing wrong with it while I still have a chance to return it .Thanks again !
@@SalamS If your Roll & Pitch readings will not say 0° and the Drone is definitely on a level surface when you plug in the battery, you need to do an IMU calibration. (Inertial Measurement Units). By doing that, you will, Factory reset the IMU's, so the sensors will give you proper pitch and roll readings. Do you know how to perform an IMU calibration? From what you are saying, it definitely sounds like you need to do that.if you don't know how to do it, I can walk you through it, it's very simple. However, it is very important. It will not void any type of warranty and is actually recommended if you have these types of problems. The IMU's are "telling" the quad what the Pitch & Roll readings are. It's necessary to do an IMU calibration after any sort of crash or it flips over, etc. Even though they calibrate the IMU's at the factory, they can be thrown off during shipping...
Also, if you fly inside your house, turn the GPS switch Off. The reason you need to turn it Off is because if it's On, the GPS module inside the Drone, is Constantly trying to acquire satellites. If it happens to find a satellite signal, it's going to start flying itself towards that direction and end up smashing into something. I've had it happen to me, with a different drone. Turn Off GPS if you Ever want to fly Indoors. It's kind of difficult to explain why, just please turn the GPS switch Off, trust me on that. I had to replace a window and a blind, when my drone started going towards the wall and I could Not stop it, with any control inputs. It flew into the window because it suddenly acquired e GPS signal. When that happens, the Drone is going to want to go towards that Satellite's signal. Because of the GPS Mode, being turned on. Never fly Indoors with GPS Mode On, always Shut it Off buddy, it will save you from a crash. ;) GPS Mode, is for Outside, Only. Use Altitude Hold, if you ever fly anywhere indoors. Also, in GPS Mode, you Must wait, until the quad acquires At Least 6 satellites. The more the better. Do Not Arm the props, without at Least 6, or it Will Not "remember" a Home Point. Then RTH will Not Work. After the Compass Calibrations, let it sit and acquire as Many satellites as possible. Waiting for 11-12 satellites, on the drone is the best thing to do. The controller will fluctuate. Rarely ever get more than 7-8 on the controller. Sometimes, you can get 11, but the drone having as many as possible, is a lot more important. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask ! ;) Ok ?
@@MarkSuttner You are a savor I can not thank you enough for your wonderful and informative reply . Because of you I was able to solve my problem by doing , as you suggested , an IMU calibration. (Inertial Measurement Units) . Now P and R both read 0 . I highly appreciate your useful info and tips regarding indoor and outdoor fly I will defiantly make sure not to forget them . You went above and beyond by giving me this important info . I have been searching for an answer to this for days now the search is over thanks to you . I hope someone who has the same issue will read your reply as soon as possible . Thank you again for your time and prompt informative response .
Brandon Haynes Thank you ! Working on H501SS Flight Videos Now. They show the difference, and actually I am starting to feel like the H501SS is Better than the Original H501S.....
Brandon Haynes After about 6 flights with the new H501SS, there are some very noticeable Differences. I'm working on the videos now. #1 The quad has a better GPS hold in higher winds. #2 it seems to be able to go faster when in GPS hold flight. #3 it can orbit fly around the controller's GPS module. #4 It RTH within five feet of where you are with the controller, Not where the props were first armed. #5 The camera is Very Good when Recording during Low Light Situations, it is able to give you a clear picture when there is almost no sunlight, unlike the original h501s if you tried to record during Low Light, it's camera barely would pick up an image at all. The camera is much more sensitive. I guess that is why they include a filter that you stick onto the front of the camera for filming during"High Light"... I was kind of hesitant about it, but after 6 great flights testing all the functions over and over I have personally concluded that it is actually a better flying quad and its abilities are enhanced....
Woow amazing you do your job well my friend, One more question is Gearbest good to order from I ordered mine and it said 3-7 working days and now I'm on my 8th day will they come through with there part of the deal because as you know this quad wasn't cheap and I hate buying online?
+Brandon Haynes Yes, GearBest is a Great Company. Shipping time depends on A Lot of Variables. Usually you will receive your quad within 10 days of placing the order. It has to first be packaged, sent to an international transit company called International Bridge. From there, it is usually flown into the United States or other methods depending on where you are. Then it needs to pass through customs, and then they use the local postal service for the final delivery. It takes about 3 working days to "Dispatch" or ship out, then make it's journey from China.
That's True. Definitely compared to a DJI motor, or similar. I guess I meant to say that they were "Smooth all around". 1 motor wasn't much different than the other 3. I definitely understand what you mean by the magnet strength.
+Mister Trayser The First White box has my earlier model Original H501S inside. The second Black Box is the Newer Model H501SS. They changed the packaging (Boxes). I Have Both, the Original H501S & H501SS. Even though the Box shows a Black Quad on it, the White and Gold H501SS is inside. Basically no matter what color mix you buy, the picture on the box is not what is inside.
Maybe can you tell me. Have you the same as me? If you hold just the left stick for ~2 seconds in the lower position you copter turns off? I worry I have not the original copter...
+Mister Trayser Absolutely Not. That Should Definitely NOT be shutting off your quad! Do you mean it completely shuts down? Or do you mean it disarms the props? The only way to disarm the props if your quad is functioning properly is to hold both sticks to the outer Corners simultaneously for 2 seconds +
Hi Mark. Thanks for detailed description. After 2017 Hubsan presented upgraded video module for h501s model. Now this module calls h501s-s-01 (Hubsan H501S 5.8G RC Quadcopter Spare Parts Image Transmission Module for 2017 Version D30 a.aliexpress.com/_d6obvf1) instead of old one h501s-11 (radiomodel.com.ua/content/images/5/modul-videoperedatchika-58-ggts-s-kameroy-dlya-kvadrokoptera-h501s-hubsan-h501s-11-19247343912604_small11.jpeg). The difference is in video recording format (mpeg4 vs avi) and better picture quality. But somebody says these modules may be NOT compatible by hardware. Can you confirm or disprove it?
I thought you were going to state the differences between the two, (that's what your title said). However, I could care less about different labels and ID printed on the PCBs! What are the differences in the FEATURES and/or FLIGHT MODES?!
Rich Paul There Isn't Any Significant Different "Flight Modes". Besides the "Circle fly / Orbit Flying Function". It will circle the Controller's GPS Module and "Try" to keep it's camera pointed at it... It Returns to home forwards instead of backwards, also it RTH's to where the controller is (within 5-10 feet), instead of the Takeoff Point. Other than that, it seems to be a little more stable in flight than the "S" and that's about it for it's Flights. However, I have been able to get Way Further Range with the SS than the S. With my S, I think I got a Max of about 1,600 meters with Clear FPV and Good Control Signal. (Using the Standard Controller with external antenna mods). With my SS I was able to get 2,357 Meters Range with Perfect FPV Reception and Control. (Exact Same Controller Configuration) and The Exact Same Location. So, I guess I should have made a few other things clear in this video, however that wasn't my Initial Intention. I made this video so people could Definitely tell the difference between the S and the SS because their Firmware Are Not the same or even compatible. A lot of people were Bricking their quads because they changed the Firmware that was Intended for the S. The SS has it's Own, Completely Different Firmware (because of the FCB & Camera Module changes).
THANK YOU!!!! You have no idea how long I've been searching to find this info out! Sorry about my frustration, but I lost two good opportunities in the last 3 days because I couldn't get the answer. It sounds like the firmware for the H501SS is not at all compatible with the H501S so therefore, the H501S can't be 'upgraded to the SS version that way. That was my second question and I think that you're confirming my understanding that an H501S is going to stay as an H501S. Thanks again for the clarification, Rich
BTW: Does the H501S or SS have waypoint capabilities? I've read so many different features of the 501S, SS, A, C, and M, that I've thoroughly mixed myself up. Thanks, R
Rich Paul No. It doesn't have a waypoint function unless you were to buy the almost $800 H7000 Smart, touch screen controller that comes with the H109S X4 Pro High Edition. The 501 models that use a smartphone as their screen with a little joystick controller around it can sometimes have Waypoint functionalities, other than that, no they really were not intended for waypoints.
Thank you! Yes, I finally got through some of very confusing info out there. In fact, I ordered the H501A AIr Pro. That one will work with way points but it has to be done with the Hubsan App that also can control the unit. The 501A Air Pro comes with a radio and from what I found out, it's best to run it from the radio and use the app for controls like the Way-points. Hubsan has to be in some kind of dream land if they actually think they can make money selling their H7000 for the same price as a fully accessorized DJI Mavic! Seriously, I don't know who actually bought one of those radios, but if someone did, it would have been a case of too much money coupled with too few brains. Personally, I've been flying these drones for about a year, (I built and flew gas-engine RC planes for 10 years back in 1980). I'm a photographer and I'm working my way up to the DJI or Yuneec "Flying cameras". I'll probably go with a Yuneec when the time comes because they have a great model with six rotors. The redundancy backup motors will instill more confidence so I can concentrate on the shot and not worry so much that the thing is goind to drop from the sky like a rock (LOL). In fact, that "Hexacopter" by Yuneec can lose two motors in the same flight event, providing the second motor to stop, (which would be an unlikely coincidence, but it can happen), is positioned in one of 3 other places. That gives you better than 50/50 odds because the first one to drop out leaves you with 5 rotors. If a second motor dies and it's one directly to the left or right of the first one, then by-by drone. However, if the second to die is in any other position, the drone can still maintain flight and return with the camera intact. I owned a Hubsan H502S for 4.5 weeks and about 5 days ago, watched it disappear while I frantically attempted to regain control. I had it for 4.5 weeks and in the last 1.7 weeks before I finally lost it for good, I had to replace two motors which was the cause of two separate, similar events that occurred 5 days ago. The funny thing about that last flight was that I was suspicious that a 3rd motor may be going out. So I just took it outside to make it hover over me until the battery ran low. It was 25 feet above me and barely 6 feet away. About 45 seconds into it, the entire fiasco began! Before it was over, the drone was 30m high and 60m away. Like I have in the two previous losses, I used the radio display information to guide me to the drone. But I guess I was pissed off when I ran out to chase after the drone and threw the radio in the car a bit too roughly. It was long after that I realized the display had froze-up. I had to cycle the radio off and back on and that was the end of that. No more connection with the drone means your guess as to where it is, would be as good as any. That's brushed-motors for ya. Very definitely the last brush-motor drone I'll every buy and I knew it would be before I lost it in that last flight. I have about 10 drones from micro-drones, to 14", 720P drones. They are all brush motor drones and they have all had to have at least one motor replaced within a month of the first flight. The H501A is the first brushless-motors drone and I'm counting of some degree of dependability. Thanks again, Rich
+tony poplin After Several Test Flights, testing functions, testing different wind speeds, etc. I have also came to the conclusion that the H501SS performs Better than the Original H501S. I have both as well. :)
+haroon azam I am working on videos right now. The H501SS can handle higher winds better, seems like it is faster in GPS Hold, It RTH Forwards instead of backwards, it RTH within five feet of where you are with the controller instead of where the props were First Armed, It can Orbit Fly around the controller's GPS module, Follow Me Mode seems to work better, the camera is Way Different ! When filming in "Low Light Situations" the Original H501S would Barely see/record Anything. The New Camera on the H501SS is Very Sensitive. It can Literally record in "Low Light Situations" better than a human eye ! Only downfall to that is when your recording in "High Light Situations" it seems to be Too Sensitive & Sometimes Pixilates when moving. However, they do give you a filter that is for "High Light Situations". Overall, it basically just seems to fly better, faster, and have more abilities than the Original H501S. I have Both. H501S & H501SS. I'm working on the videos to show the difference between the two when your actually flying and recording. Oh yeah, the H501SS Records as MP4, the Original H501S Records as .MOV ....
Thanks for the description and bringing forth the differences looking forward for your videos. I have ordered a H501 but I dont know if I got S or SS. I received it just today.
John Holland You serious ? Or joking ? You should have gotten 8 props. They actually do come in handy Because if accidentally Just Slightly clip a tree branch or something, the props break Very Easily... Saves the quad from damage though....
DRONE SA FORCE Absolutely! Any firmware that was intended for the original h501s is not compatible with the SS. ua-cam.com/video/VvK0rBE2RBU/v-deo.html
According to Husban there is not one bit of difference from the s-ss version, they are exactly the same. Funny how ss owners are puffing up differences
David Israelyan They Are In Fact Different. Only the FCB and the Camera Module. The SS has a H501A FCB & Firmware, Also a H501A Camera Module. Other than that, the SS is Identical to the S. Same body, motors, etc.
I can say one thing I bought this drone an when I seen the box I was pissed off. I got a hold of Hubsan . They told me lot of things. Your video made me understand I did have the right one
H501s-s .I check all you showed and now at least I know now .
I noticed the SS has the option (on the menu you show) to FLY with GPS on/off. Have you tried the setting to see if it will launch without GPS??
In the time since you made this video and your comparisons do you have a idea which one might be better than the other ?
The 501S-S , is "better" in most cases, than the Original 501S . Small improvements done to the S to make it the SS , overall makes it a better flier. The S had some issues with Flyaways, VRS (toilet bowling) and some others. If I was to buy another one, I would make sure it's an S-S . They get better range, seem to have less issues. So, I'd say that the SS is better.
Tks
Mark Suttner thank you
Thanks for that information. I wanted to make sure I got what I thought I was ordering and this video was perfect. Thanks!
Hello Mark, WHY would you recommending the Advanced version with the H906A controller (it looks so cool)? Can I still fly with the "S-S" model? Thanks
@@MarkSuttner still going? :)
I took my 501ss a state away and it would not get out of RTH mode and I could not even start the motors.
Do you have any suggestions
If you have the newer model, where you don't have to perform a compass calibration before every flight, perform a manual compass calibration and an IMU calibration. If that doesn't help, you may need to ReBind your controller to your quad. Whenever you change flight locations, it's Very important to perform a compass calibration because of the difference in the earth's magnetic declination.
Ty for this. mine is the same. The bar code shows h501s-s...wow but I updated my cam modual the original showed h501a ...if the motherboard was a h501a you would see wifi on your phone..but it dont..do far
Are there any differences between the 501s and the 501s-s or no
Eazy Red Yes.
Mark Suttner cool, after watching this I realized that I have a h501S-S so I got lucky
Mark Suttner I appreciate the information and the videos.
rainbowunicat2006 5/17 First, thank you for the compliment of the videos. I try my best... If you have any further questions or concerns feel free to ask! Thanks :)
Whats the spare filter for? I just got this and I thought i got a S but i have an SS.
I have a hubsan h501s, the box is white the drone is black and gold and has cardboard is this meant to be correct
@@MarkSuttner it's has all that you said but the box from the outside is white, I got it from amazon from a seller called Rosa Drone
The ss version is the advanced version? Or there are h501s standard and advanced and h501ss standard and advanced?
Lorenzo Giorgi Both. The SS comes with the Standard Controller (H901A) and the Advanced Controller (H906A). Yes, they come Both ways
Why do you advice the standard version instead of the advanced one? The controller should be better... Obviously without any modifications
Also,
You can't even barely tell the difference between 720p & 1080p when looking a FPV Screen.
Is their any range difference in hubsan h501s and h501ss please tell me I am buying h501s from local store
That's exactly what I expected to find out when I patiently waited for him to finish talking about the different print and labels. Apparently, he also doesn't know the difference between the H501S, H501SS, and H501S pro.
The ss goes further
Sorry, I never saw your comment / question. As Toxic said, yes the SS does get further range than the Original S. Both 2.4 and 5.8 TX & RX Signals. 1 year ago, wow. Sorry, I really never saw your question.
Rich Paul, apparently you don't know what your talking about, sir.
When will you be dropping them fantastic flying videos of the new Hubsan H501ss like you said brother??
Brandon Haynes Thank you !! I Try...
Does it affect software updates
S or ss I mean.
IDK bro...
Is the h501ss go or bad
Definitely go 👍
I checked a lot of comments about H501SS and for now didn't find if anyone have problem with overheating the video module, even in warm weather. So looks that works O.K. Also chips are turned to venting slits and are cooling. On other side of board is probably just solder tin, which can't be damaged. But as always is better to be prepared. At Hubsan H501S is everything possible. ;)
Also another thing about battery.
After all I saw H501SS looks that works now very good.
Thanks for the your helpful information Mark.
Good info thanks. I got the ss version now I know.
whats the best ss or s
There isn't a huge difference between the S and the SS but personally I've had better range and performance from the SS. However, firmware versions have a lot to do with both of their performances.
Do you have pet snake , all I can hear us hissing in your vids 😂😂😂 Thanks for the clarification though
Shot this and many other videos in my wreck room, my basement. What your hearing is either my furnace, central air or Dehumidifier. Lol😅
Thanks, let's cross fingers then ...
Thanks !
Mark Suttner my record on 32GB
a week ago i bought one from Amazon and received the 501S :/
Wow, An Original S ? I can't believe there are still some left ! That's Almost, Unbelievable ! Hubsan made the H501SS, to replace the H501S. They did it (Secretly), because of many Problems they had with the S, that could Not be fixed by Firmware Updates. I'm Very Curious to know what Firmware Version Configurations your setup came with ! Seriously ! I'm really interested, if you would, please let me know the Controller & Quad's Firmware numbers. "RX, TX, FC"..... Thx :)
hy mark, i just ordered hubsan h501s at the beginning of december of gearbest, what hubsan h501s or h501ss will i receive later?
+Rachmat Virgo If you bought an h501s from gearbest in the beginning of December 2017, you will receive an h501ss. If you bought the standard version, it will come with a sunscreen for the controller, a lipo battery for the controller and also a spare filter for stable image under high light for the camera. Same things that I unboxed in this video. If you look closely on the gear best website, it does now say "Upgraded Version". That just means it is an h501ss.
thanks for the information, I bought Hubsan H501s at m.gearbest.com/rc-quadcopters/pp_264426.html?wid=21with discount ,hehe
@@MarkSuttner So my drones is the H501S?, Thanks
You have a H501SS or H501S-S . The older, original, H501S drones, are not being made by Hubsan anymore. The H501SS Replaced the H501S. The print is just the "Model ID". A lot of Different Drones, all have "H501S" printing on them. It's just what they named it. The electronics inside, the firmware and Different kinds of Controllers, are what makes the drones Different. All H501S Models, (501S, 501S-S, 501A, Etc), all have that printed on them, for manufacturing identification. If I could send you a picture, To explain better. I would. You have a 501SS
@@MarkSuttner
I wonder if I want to change firmware, I do not know how to search for firmware for H501S or H501SS, I want my drona to rise up but is limited to 250m if it was not limited to 250m it was superin 'rest all works ..... Thanks for your time
@@MarkSuttner
I checked the version on the controller and it appears so write in white
V4.2.36
LCD V1.3.3 after that writes in red
H501S V2.1.50
FC V1.1.46
CAM V30.84.84, If I modify the FC V1.1.46 Firmware and leave the flash again modified, do I have to flash the controller again? Of course the same Firmware .. Thanks
Thanks Mark, I had a h501ss without even realizing it was a h501ss I thought it was a h501s lol
I just got mine
That's what I got, have not flown it yet weather sucks,my first one.
I have seen them all.Thanks
I have the SS. Sometimes on RTH it will flip on the descent. I am returning it and trying another one.
OK. So have you remedied this issue with different props? Do you still recommend this drone?
I have had both and i find the new ss is far more stable the older one.
Quad is the same tx is the same only a few differences like orbit mode is one but with the right update the 501s can have the same features of ss
Is there any range difference in h501s and h501ss
I’m considering buying this quad and I wanted to know which version- H501S or h501SS- you think is better overall.
Thanks
Thank you
nice info mark thanks ..
WARI,S IDEAS Still editing Flight videos. This H501SS came with the Newest Firmware Versions, and flies Perfect ! I was Amazed ! Damn Near Better than my Original H501S. Not so much the camera, but not a biggie. Thanks Bro !!
do you need H501S lipo battery ? there are many good quality and lower price,
if you like , you could see the below link:
www.aliexpress.com/store/product/2017-Good-Quality-Hubsan-H501S-X4-RC-Quadcopter-Spare-Parts-7-4V-2700mAh-10C-Rechargeable-Battery/2782033_32811277632.html?spm=2114.12010612/itm2home-1.0.0.35223ae0FDx7bc
where do u download the version?
Michael Caliri You don't "Download" the Version. Unless you are trying to "Upgrade". Your Versions are Shown in the Menu. Before Flight Menu, you access with the Controller. For the Standard Controller, Hold Down on Throttle and at the same time Push the Right Stick like a Button. Advanced Controller, Hold Throttle Down & press Enter. That will bring you to the Menu. Both the Quad and Controller must have power (Just have battery plugged in). Go to the bottom of The Menu where it says "Show Version". That's where you can see what Versions you have....
I have Hubsan x4 H501S in the controller I can
never get the P or R to be less than 1 although I did the calib compass 1 &
2 successfully I have heard that if you cannot get P or R to be less than 1 the
HUBSAN will not ascent vertically .Im not able to fly the drone yet . Please
help .
Well done!!
Brandon Haynes Thank you ! Working on H501SS Flight Videos Now. They show the difference, and actually I am starting to feel like the H501SS is Better than the Original H501S.....
Mark Suttner why do you think that??
Thanks Mark
No resistance in motors indicates weak magnets
That's True. Definitely compared to a DJI motor, or similar. I guess I meant to say that they were "Smooth all around". 1 motor wasn't much different than the other 3. I definitely understand what you mean by the magnet strength.
so is the first copter in black box fake and the other one original? or are they both original?
+Mister Trayser The First White box has my earlier model Original H501S inside. The second Black Box is the Newer Model H501SS. They changed the packaging (Boxes). I Have Both, the Original H501S & H501SS. Even though the Box shows a Black Quad on it, the White and Gold H501SS is inside. Basically no matter what color mix you buy, the picture on the box is not what is inside.
+Mark Suttner I hope you understand what I mean..??
Yeah, thank you!
Now this module calls h501s-s-01 (Hubsan H501S 5.8G RC Quadcopter Spare Parts Image Transmission Module for 2017 Version D30
a.aliexpress.com/_d6obvf1) instead of old one h501s-11 (radiomodel.com.ua/content/images/5/modul-videoperedatchika-58-ggts-s-kameroy-dlya-kvadrokoptera-h501s-hubsan-h501s-11-19247343912604_small11.jpeg).
Thanks again for the clarification,
Rich
BTW: Does the H501S or SS have waypoint capabilities? I've read so many different features of the 501S, SS, A, C, and M, that I've thoroughly mixed myself up.
Thanks,
R
Thanks again,
Rich
No only got 6 ,,
the ss is superior.
I have both of them with over 50 flights each.
In what way is the ss version superior than h501s?
I only got 6 props lol
John Holland You serious ? Or joking ? You should have gotten 8 props. They actually do come in handy Because if accidentally Just Slightly clip a tree branch or something, the props break Very Easily... Saves the quad from damage though....
Just do not change firmware the ss will be damaged.
You dont make two different devices to be the same and do you really think Hbsan or any company would admitt its failings? Liven up lad!
