Something I really enjoy about these videos that I think doesn't get recognized enough is the speed at which you go through them. We don't have to wait through 90 seconds of someone going, "whats up guys, welcome back to the show" before they actually get to the content. Workphlo is practically already into the tutorial from the first second, snapping shots and moving lights as he intros the show. It's a really great detail in the presentation that I think a lot of channels could learn from.
As far as future projects, what about challenging yourself with something you've never worked with before and explain your thinking process as you tackle it, what issues to you foresee, how you deal with unexpected surprises, things like that.
Wonderful work!! Thank you..
Easy simple and clear instructions and examples. The best tutorial video ever!!!!!
Hands down one of the best sets of guides on UA-cam! Straight to the point, no faffing about with expensive gear, useful tips and results are awesome! Subscribed and looking forward to more content!
Thx, much appreciated!
This is so good. I'm right in the middle of a shoot and stumped shooting a glass with an emblem engraved on it. Searched UA-cam, found this and now its totally sorted it. You're a life saver.
Consistent, concise, and no non-sense. Learning a lot from your techniques and methodology. Thanks.
We love hearing that, cheers!
Amazing video Dustin! I've learned so much from you!!
Thanks for sharing, easy and simple to the point!
Your video's are great, thanks for posting them!
A lot, and I mean a lot... more on the way! 🍁

AWESOME work! Your videos are very very very educative, more than most i have watched here in youtube! Please keep up the good work! cheers!
Cheers Delicio!
Thank you! Im a knife photographer, and today we got a custom liquor glass and i had no idea how to make it look so clean. I was worried about capturing the graphic on the glass, but this method worked flawlessly.
Very interesting and informative. Great casual but polished presentation style. Subbed and looking forward to more.
Wow thanks Black Dot! ⚫ We're working hard on good future episodes ✌️
This is a very good workflow. Make the light your background. I love the simplicity of this, as well as the product that has very LITTLE post production. I'm definitely going to utilize this a lot! :D
Thank you! Yes it's such a simple workphlo.
Exactly what I needed!
Glad we could help, Wiktor (-:
Thank you very much. Your video's are great and help me a lot!!!
Glad it helped, George! It was fun to make
Great work man, definitely looking forward to some more food related videos.
Great, you're in for a doozy of an episode Nathan E. !
Keep up the good job, excellent explained with clear English
Mario Mifsud Much appreciated comment! Enjoy 🍕
No Bullshit straight to the point fantastic, 90% of the people shooting tuts in UA-cam land should tune into your channel to get a master class on keeping to the point.
Haha "a master class on keeping to the point" I love that. Thanks Robert.
Love the video!
I am so intrigued about what you would do if you were doing it for a pro catalogue and not trying to keep it basic for a tutorial.
Thanks. Great video.
Nice work as always Dustin
Hey, thanks! 🍁
Nice work.
Hi, thanks for making the vid, as I said of other vids, these are ideas we can do at home without large studios, models or expensive gear. Glad you will be 'churning them out like a factory' would good to see the PS side of things (slowly) so we can follow along at home, step by step flipping the image for symmetry and creating fade at the bottom.
Thank you for the tips
No problem!
You have a good style for doing videos that hold one's attention. Simple enough to understand and show the slight mistakes that we all make. You mention post work (composites) often. Any chance of showing us some of it? I know you do photography, not software videos, but it doesn't hurt to ask. Also, am always curious as to equipment used (what brand/kind of trigger system for lights, lens, and settings. Keep making these videos.
I would love to see some food photography
Simple! Great! Thanx!
You're welcome!
Thanks Dustin! I have one suggestion for a video: maybe you could do one without the strip box? Just with some continuous lighting and a white backdrop. I know that's what a lot of people start out with, and that's what me and some of my classmates have available. Just an idea! love your videos, thanks for making good content.
We will do that forsure, Noah! Thanks for watching, I hope you like future installments!
Like your Videos a lot, your easy style showing all the steps thanks mate ...
chris warb Cheers mate thanks!
Your videos are fantastic! They're educational, informative but most importantly they're enjoyable to watch. I find other similar videos boring and they lose my interest quickly. Keep up the excellent work👌🏻
Thank-you very much!
I second that. I really have enjoyed watching and trying these techniques out.
Thx. I'd love to see your work, #workphlo 🍁
I had ago at the Bold Wine look. It's on my Facebook page: facebook.com/CollettCreative
We'd love to have this over at facebook.com/groups/workphlo
hey man you are awsome
Thank you very much Mohamad Khodaveisi I appreciate it.
Hey Dustin, saw this video on DP Review and thought I'd subscribe to see more of your awesome work. Well done sir.
KreygScott DP review eh? I'll check it out! Thanks for enjoying our video :-)
Thanks a lot, Your videos are amazing, great explanations ! How are you doing with engrave glasses please ? I'm strugguling with it 😬
Thank you
Welcome!
Thanks Dustin, what kind of ambient lighting would you recommend for glass photography?
Really enjoying your content ! Subscribed
Thx! Where'd you find us? Curious
Cheers. For labels, I would suggest shooting a clean/new version of the product so the type is clear and needs minimal retouching. You can always use local adjustments like selective colour etc. to emphasize type, and selecting the type is always an option as well (to perform adjustments).
Some people even match fonts and digitally add the type on certain elements to give a computer-render level of perfection.
Thanks for watching Cliff!
Your vids rule! I'm just getting into speedlight product photography, and would love to see how you would shoot sunglasses or something reflective
I would love to shoot that, soon!
Would this still be possible without a flash? All I have are two soft boxes and the on-board flash
Would love to see the whiskey bottle shots you mentioned!
Nice work
Cheers mate
like this and your previous wine bottle tutorial, could you put one together that shows the photoshop part of the image making, thanks
Can you tell me what sort of clip or attachment that you are using to attach the plexiglass to the stand/tripod your re using?
Good video bro,
Thank you my friend
I'd love to see some glassware / bottles with colored gels.
Matthew Welborn Awesome idea, you're in for a treat
Thanks
You are most welcome!
Hey i like your work, it would be nice if you photographed a beer shot in glass, thanks for the video
Will this work for glasses with etching on them?
Do i need all the items listed onnyour description in order to have my glass come out like this?
The most useful video I have watched on the subject... and I have watched several. Any suggestions on photographing large sets 36-52 to alleviate shadow?
hmm I would have to see the shots! At the end of the day the shadows are the glass reflecting unlit area behind or below it. Thanks for your watching this
Seriously awesome channel. Could you do a tutorial on shooting labels that have reflective foil stamping on them? Especially on a curved package like a bottle.
ihvaquestion1 Thx 🐈 We will try and do that episode!
Which lens was used in this shoot?? Can you tell me please
Very well done video. Clean and professional approach! I was wondering what a back flash was or if I could just use a bower SFD740 shoe mount flash? I'm really new to this so I don't know anything about how to use the flash. What settings /angle would I need?
You need decent surface area to nuke white, so if your flash isn't working just shoot it into a piece of tracing paper or white fabric to diffuse the area!
Hi Dustin, great content again. Can you explain how you use a strip box behind a bottle, for example, to make a selection/path, and how you implement it when doing a composite? I'm from a different photography genre, but looking to get more into product photography. Compositing in Photoshop is very new to me and I don't really understand how to combine multiple images. Perhaps my request is a little too basic for your channel, but I thought I'd ask anyway. Thanks again.
John, our most recent episode (speedlight compositing) as well as our wine on plexiglass episode, describe the technique in depth!
can you upload a video showing how did you edit these?
Hello, you said you take proposals, so I would like you to make a tutorial for porcelain cups, perhaps even with the plate(saucer) and other stuff... How to handle shadows. Thanks.
Great video, how would you approach an etched glass? Would the same technique work? Or would the back light blow out the etching?
Ray MacDonald Great question, I've never tried an etched glass but I suspect the etch might redirect the light such that it is defined nicely with black edges, after a bit of tweaking! Plus when you're on #ffffff white you can shoot an additional expoure where the light flatters the etch, and mask it in easily.
hey Dustin, I am not someone who leaves comments, but I'll make an exception.
Your methods are simple & no-nonsense, but foremost I enjoy your easy-going demeanor & tone. You know what I mean, I have watched many tutorial videos and I am often completely turned off by the host. Keep up the good work.
major deegan Awesome comment, much appreciated! Filming an episode as we speak
Love your tutorial man. Recently o had to shoot wine bottles and jars on white backdrop. Lot of items. I wanted to avoid composite but i couldn't get a defined side lines cause the white backdrop reflected into the glass I couldn't use black flags. Shadows were also very evident. It was a nightmare
I hear you, glass can be tricky 100%
Can you tell me what is a good size for Plexiglass to make a product table I'm thinking of dark plexiglass on a light stand. You do a great job. Thanks
I have a standard piece of paper sized sheet that works well! I'd advise larger if it is available to you though!
Maybe a simple question (there is no stupid question ^^) : why do you shoot horizontaly? Won't you have a better resolution by shooting verticaly?
If your camera supports showing LiveView on a smartphone or tablet via WiFi (like the Pentax K-1), try taking the smartphone/tablet with you while you adjust the softbox. Only works if the softbox has a modelling light, though.
Very useful idea! For those with modeling light
Hı what are the softbox dimensions?
Thank you for the video, I really appreciate that, may I know please do you have a book for in depth study?
I don't though all of our tutorials are available at workphlo.ca
Can you tell me what size softbox you are using? It looks bigger then 8x36. Great vid
Hey there! This one is actually 120cm, I have downsized since this was filmed! Cheers
Very useful viedo ✨👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 good job 🙌 , Question: what if the glasses are decorated with shiny drawings like gold but transparent at the same time, how can I get the correct color with this technique.
They may require a frontal light to get the accents as you describe, if they can not be backlit - like translucent items.
is it possbile to see post-production work realized on glasses on order to get crisp black edge on silhouette? thanks
Carlo, I will do my best to teach that soon!
You were great in '13 Reasons Why'
Had to google it, too funny. Thanks
Hello All,
Can anyone point me to a link where to buy (or a DIY solution) the flat base on top of the tripod ?
Thanks in advance
here we explain ua-cam.com/video/fxxsCCDpJs0/v-deo.html 👍
I like your videos so far. Two things: 1. Why would you use this lighting over another for a particular purpose beyond just looking cool and simplicity? 2. Question about the edge reflection created from the edge of the stripbox... what is going on with the edge of the cup part of the glass (not a solid edge darkness like the stem of the glass)? I was seeing this last night in a practice session and realized I had a lot of ambient light going on that was being reflected onto the edge of the glass. Used 1 LED. But I was curious what was happening on yours with the speedlights.
I use this strip because the width was ideal, but in general yes it's just the shadow area rendering the 'dark' parts of the glass so it's just a matter of finding the right balance.
Best of luck!
Great videos. Direct and to the point. How would you photograph a shiny metal object like a gun.
Thanks Check out our IKEA lamp video to see a great solution for reflectivity.
I don't have a strip light. Is there any reason that a soft box wouldn't work?
Use it! It'll work fine with some adjusting
Is the light on the softbox off or on when taking a pic? Looks off? Is just the flash from the Camera lighting it all up?
No it's just the stripbox. It just goes off in a 1/100,000 of a second
How do you achieve such crisp black edges as seen on 7:10 ? Adding black card does not seem to add any edge as black as that one. Great showcase by the way. Thanks for sharing.
Hey Willy! We just used a curves layer in photshop I believe (few years back) to make the dark grey edge pretty much black. Might have went a bit overboard in hindsight actually! I'm meaning to make an updated episode on Black + White glassware schemes. Stay tuned and thanks for watching / commenting.
Handsome guy!!
Please tell me more about lens that is micro vs regular lens and what mm?
You're in for a treat, it's the kit lens I used here! Probably shot around 70mm.
I am trying to shoot clear glass cannisters (like what you store flour and sugar in). I don't have two sets. How would you suggest I shoot these? Thanks.
Donna Babylon Hi Donna! A small piece of Plexiglas would do the trick if you want a reflection. Check out our martini episode for a walkthrough, and we link great pieces in the description! Or just use a nice white surface perhaps? Have a great weekend.
will do! thanks for the info.
How would you shoot Stemless Wine Glasses?
You can flip one upside down and shoot it just like this! Alternatively we created an acrylic base perfect for shooting glassware I'll link below: workphlo.shop/collections/frontpage/products/bottle-support-plate
Splendid work, would like to know how to take pics of mobile phones & laptops in a pro way, Thanks.
That would be a great topic
Great stuff. Maybe you could do jars of honey next time :D
Andrew Zalewski I like that idea.
we are working on our new catalogue right now and going through trial and error phase. if you would like to check out and give us some feedback would be awsome :D
Dustin do you have a flash on the front firing at the same time? or is it just the back flash?
Just the back flash. I have the Yongnuo Transmitter on top "talking" to the back flash. Cheers mate
workphlo thanks for your reply Dustin, I was wondering if you think this process would work for terrariums? I want to get better at photographing them for my business
Totally! Best done lighting a white wall behind the aquarium to create the glass backlighting look.
workphlo thank you so much Dustin! You’re th best!!!!
Can you do a demo with a light tent?
Absolutely we can, stay tuned!
How do you mount the plexi to the top of the light stand or tripod?
And what if you did this on top of a regular table instead of plexi? Thanks for the tutorial!
Hi! I use a metal plate welded to a 1/4" nut -- but any table will work here since the item is lifted in the air on the reflection glassware. Having a small table is nice because it allows you to get your backlight closer to your glassware when needed. Hope that helps!
workphlo absolutely! many thanks!
Could you do a video for a white product, preferably white plastic bottle, and how to shoot it for a catalog. With silhouetting it to be on a pure white background. Thanks, Love your videos!
Will do! I have a series coming up intensely focusing on white and black catalog shots with an array of different materials. Thanks for watching our stuff Len!
Great, looking forward to it!
Cheers (-:
Would you please comment on your manual settings?
Hey JoAnne my manual settings are 1/200s ISO 400 f/11
Hi Dustin! Great videos. Can you shoot luxury chocolates? How to make them look shiny by using your flash techniques? I'm having a hard time finding a great youtube video on how to shoot commercial quality for those. Thanks man.
Gio Alforte That sounds like a great episode idea, I would love to. I know some folks in our Facebook Group have uploaded some chocolate photography too
workphlo I'll check that out. But I was really wondering if you can make a tutorial out of it. Haha. Because! You're the man!
Gio Alforte Thanks! I just might do that, chocolate is lovely stuff.
Dustin you talk about a non post-heavy method for the top rim coming in the upcoming weeks but i couldn't find it 4 years+ after. Did i missed something?
Hey there, thanks for following up! I must not have decided to make that video, but often I use black or white cards mounted at a specific angle to suppress/accentuate those highlights! Best of luck
@@workphlo I don't think that the perfect white background can be achieved without losing the center of the rim. You can place the flags anywhere but that spot is purely backlit with 0 angle, not a reflection/rifraction. Of course i mean "without open PS"
@@viappioshred I see what you are saying
I need to take a pic of an award made of crystal and the writing is etched in. help! Would it help to put a mirror underneath?
Perhaps, also post in our Facebook Group
EASTER EGGING...what a concept
