I'll never forget my mother made me watch this movie to show me what can happen to kids that run off on their parents. I have the image of Adam getting kidnapped right in front of Sears permanently burned in my mind & I haven't seen this movie since it aired on TV way back in 1983, I was 5 at the time. Why is this movie so hard to find online?
I remember it came on tv probably late 90s. I was young but the only part I remember was them filling the car with teddy bears and balloons for if he came back
NBC did a very powerful promo for this. The network pointed out that "on another network," in this case ABC, a Monday Night Football game would be playing and pointed out in the time it takes to play that game, more children will go missing. NBC then asked to skip the game for a couple of hours to watch this movie. Ratings went through the roof.
You wonder why they had to air it opposite Monday Night Football, but I guess Grant Tinker felt that was the only place on the schedule he could put it. And fortunately, a lot of people decided to eschew the football game, whatever it was, to watch this powerful story.
I remember this story a little boy named Adam dissappeared and it was all over public news. The poor family what they had to go through was hell. Sheer hell when Adam died. As a parent your never the same when your child is gone and taken away from this world. It wasn't until 30 yrs later John Walsh found out who the killer is. Such a sad story! This was 34 yrs ago when this all took place and this is why I don't want any kids. or a family of my own or anyone.
Bad things can lead to good things. If it hadn't been for Adam Walsh's murder, John Walsh wouldn't have started America's Most Wanted, which helped catch predators nationally. Code Adam wouldn't have been made, which helped locate lost children.

well, my mom was no football fan and I remember watching this with her. I fell asleep halfway into the movie, yet I can recall her holding onto to me...and I can still feel her embrace almost 35 years later where young Adam was a year older than I and the same age as my sister when he died.
Don't you love the announcer's voice? Makes it more powerful.

Just before the promo starts, you see a sign off for SNL. The late Brandon Tartikoff was host, plus we see Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert there too.

People here need to ask themselves why did the mother leave her 6 and half year old son alone for an hour before she started to look for him.
Times were very different back then. People were more trusting of each other.
