A coffee filter at the bottom of the pot would be better than a dryer sheet. Because even used, there is still residue on the sheet. That could permeate into the soil over time, especially if you bottom water your plants/
Your plants are too tall and lanky. They need more light. I don't know where you're located but in temperate areas they grow very well outside. They just don't like to be sunburned. Mine (southern Arizona) grow large and bushy, even in containers. It causes more skin irritation than anything but I wouldn't grow inside. The branches break off too easily
Yes lighting helps develop better form, but I kinda like the funky look of mine. And I grew these from a simple cutting. On growing inside we haven't had any problems with branches breaking off inside, as my pencil cactus has been growing inside for about 4 years or so and keeps putting on new growth.
