A friend of mine Looks up each place she plans to visit while traveling on google earth. That way she actually sees places and is already familiar with the area when she arrives.
Fantastic idea! Thanks for watching!
In Egypt, I met an American woman who had lived there for a few years. Her pickpocket-avoidance strategy was cheap and effective. In the side pocket of her skirt, she kept her money in a simple cloth pouch, and used a diaper pin to secure the pouch inside her pocket. It was a little inconvenient, of course, when she needed to pay for something - but definitely more convenient than being pickpocketed.
Oh I have never thought of that for anti-theft!
If men want to carry wallets in their front pant pocket instead of a inside shirt neck wallet on a string, remember to put several rubber bands around your wallet. Rubber and cotton stick and you will feel someone tug your wallet inside your pockets. Also another tip we do is get small locks and lock your backpack zippers together. Keep the key in your "around the neck, inside your shirt wallets". We travel Europe all the time, and once on a train in Rome, a pickpocket tried to unzip the backpack reaching around to my hubby's lap, that pickpocket didn't see the locks on the zipper and GOT NOTHING!
Thank you!!! Same here if you visit Texas!
Great thought
If two people are traveling together Cary different credit cards so if one person gets pickpocketed you can cancel that card and still have something.
Dropped my money belt before TSA in the SFO airport. I had my plane ticket and passport on me. No money in the money belt. Luckily my husband had different credit cards and debit cards. My money belt was found by a United employee. They called my pet sitter (I had an emergency card with her contact in the money belt).
Excellent advice about the different credit cards from different companies
One thing that we do when traveling out of the country or a new city.... is to always get the hotels business card to hand to the taxi or uber driver..... our first day in rome a few years ago we had a bit too much limoncello ... needless to say.... it came in handy on many fronts.... LOL
Fantastico idea! Thanks for watching!!
Always be aware of your surroundings. Years ago, my husband was searching for information while I kept all the bags with me in Venice. I noticed at least 4 men signaling each other and looking at me. I immediately panicked and started screaming. I think they went away because of the commotion I was causing. So be alert!
You go girl! Thanks for watching!
I'm so glad I saw this comment. I'm going to Venice and Paris in March and haven't been to Europe since 1986. I went to London and was pickpocketed.
@@rb523100 Don't worry, you will have a great time! I will return to Italy in June. I love Italy! I have a Travelon anti theft backpack, that has locking zippers for peace of mind . My bag was once opened at the Eiffel tower, but I guess they ran out of time, because nothing was stolen...
@@bcs3948 Thank you! I bought a small Pacsafe backpack for art supplies(I'm an oil painter) and a Travelon tote bag. I'm getting anxious but am also excited!
I am leery about asking a desk clerk in a foreign country especially about places to visit, restaurants, and even more importantly directions. Advanced research, Google Maps, TripAdvisor, and even Rick Steves travel books
We did the Rick Steves walk through of the Sistine chapel.
Notify your CC and DC supplier the dates and countries where you will be travelling. They monitor your card activity and will freeze if it the card data is being used in a country you will not be in.
This is no longer needed, but won't hurt to make sure your bank doesn't require notification.
So I know that this is an older video however I figured I would mention this anyways. Check your bank/credit card company's app. Mine has a feature that if the card is lost/stolen/forgotten at the store or even if you have to leave it as for security you can lock your card through their app. So you lock your card through the app then you can call to report it lost/stolen. It can't be used either if forgotten at a store. Then if you locate it and haven't reported it lost/stolen you can unlock it and go by your day. I actually lock it while on my trip in case I dont realize its lost until its too late.
This tip is great for protecting my money while traveling! Thank you!
It's a good idea to take a picture of your checked suitcase on your phone, and send a copy to someone at home as well. If the case gets lost, this will increase the chances of the airline finding it among all the lost pieces.
We just took a friend to Europe, and he put strips of blue tape in several place which helped too. Thanks!
I always pack a door stop wedge for my hotel door, a few quid from Amazon, to secure my hotel door from the inside when I go to bed. Never had any issues but provides peace of mind for a good nights sleep, not always easy when new hotel or location. Some door locks aren’t as robust as I’d like. You must remember to remove before trying to leave in the morning, I’ve not got a 100% record on that 🤣 not to mention my post it’s for the door eye hole!!
Hahaha the mental image of forgetting that. Great idea. My hubby has walked into a room and realized someone was in there like late at night and had to go back to the desk to say they gave him the wrong key. Love the post its. Thanks for watching!
Excellent idea!
Just bought a pack of two rubber door stoppers from the dollar store. Many years ago I had a metal door stopper that admitted 120 decibel noise if moved. I gave that to my daughter I actually need to research and see if I can find one of those as well
I pretty much always travel solo and I always book little walking tours in the places that I'm visiting whether they're cultural or foodie ones. So great for meeting like-minded travellers as well as the reasons you mentioned! Love them!
Thank you for watching! Food unites people for sure.
Back in 2002, we had visited the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona and climbed to the top to catch the view. Afterwards, I walked down the spiral staircase and then outside to wait for my husband and son. When I pulled my backpack in front of me I noticed that EVERY SINGLE ZIPPER had been unzipped! Luckily I carried valuables in an inside zippered pocket of my coat as well as a small crossbody bag, and there had been nothing in the backpack. LOVE your videos!!
Wow!! Just wow!
We ALWAYS ask hotel staff where THEY shop or where THEY eat when they are off work. They normally suggest amazing hole in the wall restaurants and less expensive places to shop for local products and local vendors - we have never been steered wrong when it comes to food especially
Yes, I mentioned this important tip in my latest UPDATED International Tips video: bit.ly/InternationalTips2022
Thanks for the safety tips. My daughter and I were followed for hours at the Eiffel Tower, when she was a teenager. We had to find police officers, which scared the guy away finally. Super scary.
Oh wow! That would be scary for sure!
I'd never heard of the STEP program. Thanks for mentioning it.
I had not either until I called TSA for a question. Thank you for watching!
How did I miss that episode? Lol what is that?
Thanks for sharing
Love each of your videos! I'll be ready for travel in no time! :)

Great advice
Super; hope it helps.
I’m following your recommendations for this trip. When I get back I’ll give you an update of how they worked for me. Can’t wait for the 31st!
Hi Lori very informative information
Keep up the good work!
Thank you, Melissa!
EMails can be hacked, especially if using unsecured wifi, that applies to some hotels. It is better to have a paper copy of your passport, or have it on a jump drive. Also if you do ever report your passport stolen, then you will get stopped and pulled aside for more questions at Immigration, i.e. you will need to allow more time and be ready for that stress.
Europe and Asia you don't have to tip often or much. Wish north America would pay living a living wage.
Thank you for watching! Great tips!
Great tips!
Thank you again!
Wow really amazing tips. Its very helpful. thanks for sharing. big thumbs up!

Great advice, Laurie. Thank you. I find the RFID sleeves very nice and space saver.👍

Hi Laurie. I’m Canadian but currently live in England. I’m flying back to Canada in January. I’m so excited. I love your channel. 🌟🤗
I just started watching your channel and I can’t stop watching your videos. They are very helpful and informative. Keep up the great work. Your fan from Atlanta,GA
Awwww I'm from Covington! Thanks for watching!
I think you can ask the front desk for ideas for dinner or shopping by saying...."Hi, I'm meeting up with my friends and we want to.......... Where are some good places to ...." If asked are they staying here?.....say no, they are staying at another hotel." If pressed for their information ... then I'd be worried and may consider finding another hotel myself....shady.
Ooh, I like that idea! Thanks for watching!
You are AWESOME! Thanks for sharing such IMPERATIVE information! I'm going to Barcelona next year.
Thanks for watching. So excited for you!
Awesome video! 😁 Really want to travel more now
Thank you for watching!
Thanks for more great travel tips, Laurie! I don’t travel much, but I enjoy your videos. They’ll be helpful for the next time I do travel! :)
Thank you so much for watching!
Hi Laurie! Just love your travel tips. Going to sign up for the S.T.E.P. Thank you.
Thanks for watching! Great plan.
Hey Laurie awesome video. Heading to Jamaica in June with my 16 yr old daughter and parents in their 70s. First time out of the country for me and my daughter! Your videos jave already been a big help thanks!
I'm so glad; thank you!
I like all your comments and find them very useful for my next traveling.
Smart subscribers, right?
I stumbled upon your channel about a week ago and now hooked. Been binge watching all week. Going to Poland in a few months and these videos are very informative!
I've been watching the HGTV House Hunters there; have a lovely time! Thank you for watching!
Hello. Great video. Thank you so much. I have one tip. I have two phones with me. One for taking pictures (make sure it linked to cloud and upload pictures then u take them) and just use google map (usually less expensive too). Second with all my contacts and useful apps (for bank cards, persanal information) I will take care like passport. Put in safe place or in money belt
That is a brilliant tip! Thank you for watching.
Hi there, we are going to Italy this summer and watching all these type videos to learn all I can. ❤️thank you for the info. 😊
Hope they help! Thanks for watching!
My hubby and I are going to Italy in September. I can’t wait to go. I’ve been trying to catch up on all of your videos. Thank you for all of your travel trips!
What a great time to go! I'm so happy for y'all! Thanks for watching!
Great video and great travel tips! Thank you, Laurie.
Watching from the Kansas City, Missouri ((area)) USA
Thank you, Cathy!
Had never heard of The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program. My husband going to China in May and I'm going to enroll him. We never go out carrying our passports, always leave them but we do have copies on our phone. If your purse/travel bag is stolen, at least they won't get your passport. Thank you so much!
Ooh, that's something to think about. Can you travel on that long of a flight? I don't think I could. Thanks for watching!
Always keep your passport in your money belt on your person.
Do you think that's safer than locking it in the safe in the room?
Hi, Michelle from near Sacramento California. I'm planning travel now and your videos are very helpful.
Love your city and state! Thank you for watching!
Enjoying all your tips
Thank you for the travel tips. I have traveled to Portland, Maine and Liverpool, UK in the last 2 years alone. However, I had friend and a brother and his family in those places, so I wasn't alone when I arrived at those destinations.
Beautiful places! Having a friend or family member is bonus! Thanks for watching!
Yes, it is, and I try to have people like that in places I want to visit for safety reasons.
Super great video! I think a lot of people don't know these tips, good to bring to everyone's attention. I always use RFID covers and wallet, keep my IDs and credit cards/money on my person. Better safe than sorry! I have noticed some people I travel with don't like to do this, so to me they are the ones who's wallet/purse will get taken. I guess they think a neck or body ID holder that carries EVERYTHING is not cool. Who cares, right? Safety first
That's right; safety first. Thanks for watching!
Good tips. Also love the hair color, very flattering.
Thank you! Good lighting helps lol.
Thanks
99 days! Thanks so much for your awesome tips!
Woohoo!
Hi Laurie, my husband and I are headed for Mexico. We fly from HOU to PVR, then on to Ajijc and Chapala, Jalisco. It will be a vacation plus get a few medical procedures done. If we love the area, we may stay. There one can have a better lifestyle, living on Social Security. Thank you for you informative videos. Joy n Wyatt
Best of travels to you! Hope you love it. Thank you for watching!
Best practice would be to simply put all cards in an RFID shielded wallet. When at home I do that and when traveling, I do the same thing. Then you don't have to wonder, because everything is shielded at all times.
I travel alone, and was given this great tip by another female traveler.
Keep a copy of your passport, credit card numbers, and also the address where you are staying, and your emergency contact person’s info.
I also keep 100 of whatever currency the country I am currently in uses.
Put it all in a small ziplock bag, and put it under the insole inside your shoe.
No one can get it, but you have ID and some cash if you get mugged.
In the summer, put it in your bra.
Fantastic ideas! People shared those with me on my 33 Travel Hacks video. Thanks for watching!
I always carry $300.00 US as emergency backup. I had to use it once in France when by DC was frozen for unauthorized use.
Thank you Laurie. Even though I am a 70 year old who has travelled my whole life and continue to do so I still always learn something new from your videos. Leaving in two weeks again so this is timely.
Oh wonderful! Where are you going this time? Thank you!
This time to Perth Australia and probably a week in SEAsia somewhere.
No purses !! Money belt,. Use inner pockets, hide $$ in shoe. I am 65 years, travel alone. No problem 😁😊👍
Great idea!!
Trust your intuition!!!
Our debit card info was stolen at a gas station because they were able to install something inside the gaa pump. The police said to only run credit card sale on a gas pump with your debit card. That way they don't get your PIN. When living in Germany they told us always to be in pairs if possible. Also in our terrorist training we were told to not just watch cars following drom behind, they will watch from a car in front. The biggest is to leave 2 car lengths in front of you driving so you can get away if someone starts shooting. NEVER wear anything that says United States or any state on your clothes as it spotlights you are american. Great tip video Laurie!
I've heard of this scam. Never use a debit card at a gas station. Great idea! Hubby wore his Old Navy USA shirt inside out when he was in Venezuela. Thanks for watching!
Chrissy 8675309 Imdo the same thing as the bank will reimburse you and start a claim request for credit cards, but once money is taken out of your debit account, you don't get that back...only thing is to turn off the card and call the bank for a new one.
Hey! Traveling to CT by way of Newark. Personal item bag only. Thank you for helping me know how to pack.
Oh boy Ailsa! Hope it goes well!
One thing I learned traveling in and out of the country that goes with be aware of your surroundings.9 TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. If your gut says it is bad...it is. We once went on a cruise to Nassau and that instinct probably saved our lives. We took a wrong turn and we saw a semi-truck parked along a kinda run down strip mall and no security cameras facing into the streets or sidewalks. We also heard yelling. We felt really un easy. So glad we listened to our instinct because as soon as we turned back around and got off that street there was gun fire. We found out later on their local news the truck was full of drugs, and the undercover cops were busting the dealers.
Oh wow! That is scary.
@@TravelTipsbyLaurie it was. We ran into a restaurant the second we heard the POP POP POP
I jumped and I mean jumped out of an elevator at Pikes Market in Seattle. I was alone and my gut told me I was not comfortable having these men on the elevator with me.
Hello Laurie! My name is Dionne. I enjoy your tips.
Thank you again Dionne for watching!
I have found that in traveling Latin America, I can often tip the concierge well and they can help me find anything from a good restaurant to a car to hire by the day. Often this is cheaper than a rental car and when traveling alone it gives me the added protection of a local.
Such a great tip!
Great tips about putting your card phone number on your phone, I suggest you also have the numbers on paper somewhere but NOT your credit card numbers,The credit card companies can get all information on their computers for safety
That's true; thank you.
Susan from BNA. Two things: can you give me some good packing tips for traveling for an extended period of time? (I’ll be renting an apt. at my destination for two months.)
Also, please tell us what color & brand of lipstick you are wearing. It’s great!!!
You can access your accounts through your bank app, I know my banks app will let me freeze my card or notify them that I'm travelling..which makes it much easier..
Our acct was just hacked this week, and they froze our bank app as well. But that is a fantastic point. Thank you for watching.
Hi Laurie … about years ago i traveled to ISREAL and found your advice very helpful. Well Here I am again this time going to Poland and points in Europe and seeking your advice videos once again. Thanks for the insight. Do you have a link to the Governments START TRAVELER ENROLLMENT PROGRAM?
They make locks that are accessible to TSA. They can open the lock without breaking it or your bag
Thanks for sharing that!
I use plastic zip ties for my checked luggage, never had a problem with them. I take a few extra with me for the trip home and for just in case.
Then do you need scissors to cut them? Thank you for watching. Hope you get to travel overseas soon.
TravelTipsbyLaurie yes you do, i also travel with a pair of small travel scissors, a sharp knife will do also (our hotel room has a kitchen so I use theirs). If the blade of the scissors is under 2.4 “ or less can go in carryon - in Canada
TSA doesn't cut locks if they're TSA approved. It's easy enough to see it on the label when you buy the lock. The locks are more of a deterrent to people behind the scenes than anything else. They have limited time with your suitcase.
Hi Laurie, I have a mobile ap for each credit card company and bank on my iphone and ipad, so as soon as I've misplaced it or think it's been stolen, I go to my ap and turn off the card(s). I do that before I even call the credit card company. I also have text alerts that show when a withdrawal or purchase was made (mainly for when I loan my card to my son). If I see he took cash out when he was supposed to be making a fuel purchase, I turn off the card until he gets home. I also use my fingerprint to log in, so it's very fast, maybe 5 seconds, to render the card(s) useless, without having to cancel and wait for a new card. If I know my purse was stolen, I'd turn off the cards and contact all banks immediately. I also have pics of the front and back of each card and sent them to my husband's email in case I need the numbers. I hope that helps others traveling or even loaning your cards out to family members. Safe travels everyone! 😗
Love those tips!
P
I’m planning wayyyyyy ahead ... 57 weeks and counting ❤️❤️❤️🥰🙏🏼✈️✈️😁... #youralifesaver
Is it OK to broad a plane with fanny pack + purse + carry-on? or can am I allow to just bring 2 of them? By the way, I love watching your travel tip videos; thank you for your travel tips Laurie.
Most airlines allow one carry-on (usually a 20 inch suitcase) and one personal bag (maximum if 15 inches or fits under the seat in front of you) per person. Some airlines define a fanny pack as a personal bag. Others say if it is on you, it is not a bag. You may be best to call the airline directly to find out what their policies are. Some can honestly vary wildly from one to the next.
Exactly what Emily said. Thank you!
Stick either the fanny pack or your purse into the carryon, personally I would have packed my purse into the suitcase or the carryon and made sure it was on the small side lined with the rfid fabric so that nobody can scan your credit/debit card/s or any other I’d,if possible. That is another thing, limit the number of credit cards you take with you to 1 or 2 max for a couple of reasons - limits theft opportunity and also can help keep your spending in check while still giving you access to emergency funds if needed.
Hi. .I make several photocopies of both sides of all my cards, driving license etc. I leave 1 at home and hide one in my carry on luggage. I also leave 1 with a trusted friend. That way I have several ways of cancelling cards if they are stolen. I black out the security code except for the one at home. I also have 2 slim card carriers and I split up my credit cards and other forms of payment so if one gets stolen, then I still have methods of paying for things. One other thing I do is collect business cards from Hotels and attractions so I can call them if something is left behind but also to remind me of enjoyable places that I can go back to or recommend to friends who may be travelling to that area or country. Sue
These are great tips for anti-theft! Thx Sue!
With a TSA approved lock no damage is done to your suitcase should they need to open it.
I didn't find Venice all that shady. Rome and Florence, yes. All three had lovely aspects but it seemed to me that the shady element was more active and organized in Florence and Rome. This was over 20 years ago so maybe its changed.
Brussels was super shady inside the airport/train station to us. Ah to be in Rome and Florence again!!!
i stay in a bnb house in uk when i went it was homy yet like i lived there it was good naborhood close to stores and transportation so did not look like a tourest left home everyday like i belonged
So fun and wonderful I bet! Thank you for watching.
Other than securing your purse to chair ( great idea) hanging a water bottle.. What hacks do you use carabiners? 😁
Hi there can u make a video of check in bag packing
Hi, it really would be the same way as my carry-on bag videos. I hope you have a marvelous vacation!
might have also helped i have a feance therer he is local he showed me all the sights i did not stand out
I always keep my phone seperate and I keep a photo of a certified copy of my passport and ID on my phone as it’s always better than nothing.
Love it! That IS a great idea. Thanks for watching!
Where can I buy that rfid pouch with pink around the edge? Also should I carry my passport with me at all times?
Hi, the pouch was most likely on Amazon or in my description box. Thanks! We leave ours in the hotel safe or take them with us in my husband's front pocket
My adult sons and I will be going to Scotland in September. Is there anything in particular I need to know about being in the large cities? Is Scotland safer than the continent?
Hi, just be observant like you would in any other city. And have such a special time.
Can you wear the travel pouch through security and onto the plane or should you just carry it on and put it on once on the plane?
You can not wear it through the x-ray. I put my neck pouch in the tray with my other stuff and put it on when I am through the xray. ,Never had a problem.
can you wear the security travel belt that goes under your clothes thru the TSA screening….if it only has your passport, Driver’s license and 2 credit cards?
Hi you cannot-you can’t even have tissues in your pocket.
Can you please tell us what kind of lack do you recommend to use for the luggage’s that will be registered to go as cargo,
I do not understand what you are asking.
TSA lock on Amazon
For my next cruise, that I travel alone at this time, I will not put all my money at the same place because, in case of pickpocket, you will lose all your money. I will try to find some hiddens places on my carry on (like another empty 3oz and hide there my money etc...) and my front pocket.
Yes, my husband puts stuff in his front pocket too. Great idea. Thanks for watching!
My boyfriend has a DB Power Charger we take every where we go. It can charge a car battery a cell phone just about anything and can easily fit in my Michael Kors Tote bag. Do you know if this could go in my carry on bag? We are traveling to Europe in a few months with a friend
I would think it has to go in the carryon and not in checked bags. You can call tsa.gov and they really do answer. It's on their site.
