    You missed the really important line, "My dad was happier than I am!"
    With this line, and the fact Bo was Born in 1990, I assume Bo is wishing to be his dad in 1985 because it was before Scott had a kid, and assumedly, before he had many responsibilities, He believes his dad was happiest before Bo was Born.

    I always interpreted this song to be about the generation Bo's dad belonged to.
    "He walks into a room and everyone respects him, he reads the news and doesn't let that shit effect him", "My oblivious white dad in the mid 80s", "My dad was happier than I am"
    The way that generation tends to talk to people younger than them, always makes it sound like we're whiny, (letting the news effect us), all the while they got things handed to them, when we have to fight to be respected.
    It feels like he's both idolizing that generation of people, while also calling them out for giving us crap, even though a lot of problems we have to deal with on a daily basis weren't a thing back then.
    "He's got a job and a family, how does he do it?" reminds me, someone who is thinking about having kids, that back then you could support a family with just one salary, when today, we need two just to pay for a tiny appartment.
    Then during the part where he goes "Wait..." he starts talking about how people still did have issues back then, people just both tend to forget about it because of nostalgia and they just dealt with them differently.
    Back then aids happened and everyone pointed at gay people, and now we're trying to solve the issue of gay people still being stigmatized...
    I dunno, to me personally, it just feels like he's kinda calling out both people who idolize those good old days that never existed, and the generation of people that were alive back then and are now giving younger people crap.
    Might just be my Gen Z point of view though.

    • @theperson8539

      I guess I agree, he refers to race as well, although I assume it wasn't as straightforward as that. As for the generational viewpoint, it makes a lot of sense to refer to it in terms of how it is viewed since it only really exists in that context and otherwise generalising an entire generation of people is an extremely stupid and pointless endeavour. I guess the point might be that any way of looking at an entire era is flawed, since defining moments or traits are myths that simply oversimplify things that are naturally nuanced. I suppose I fit your age range as well, and as much as I loathe being categorised in any way, I at least hope that people don't mispronounce 'Z' as 'Zee' around me... feels very pointed and upsetting at this point.

      You lost me when you said that people back then had things handed to them. They didn't. Back then so many luxuries that most people have today didn't exist back then, they got paid FAR less than we do today which equals out the income to purchasing power ratio. It's only over the last 3 years that things have really taken a turn for the worse. Up until 2008, this country was pretty much the same as it was through the 80's but with more equality than ever. So to say the 1980s were so easy, but the 2000's weren't is pure lunacy. There were always people who were more privileged than others due to their families wealth and others who had to bust their ass just to pay the bills. It's always been a true battle of the rich vs the poor, but through the 70's, 80's, 90's, and 2000's there was a strong middle class that is now disappearing under our current presidential leadership. A strong country is defined by a strong middle class. You said it yourself, "the good old days that never existed" would negate your comment of people having things handed to them back in the 80's. Yes, Gen Z as a whole is the weakest generation thus far, but in fairness, every generation gets weaker than the last because we have more luxuries and opportunities than those before us did. You will see the same thing with the next couple generations that follow you. This country has had it too good for too long, and the old saying is true, "Hard times create strong men, strong men create good times, good times create weak men, weak men create hard times." We are in a cycle and unfortunately it can only get worse until things are so bad our people get tougher, stronger, and with a back bone so strong that they stand up and fight for things that truly matter and affect everyone.

    there was actually alot of racism against Italians in the 1980s

    • @EthanKristopherHartley
      @EthanKristopherHartley 4 місяці тому +1

      I was thinking, although the bulk of the roots of Anti-Italian racism was over (They weren't considered "exotic" anymore - like they were in the very early 20th C., we were two-three generations removed from WW2, the Mafia heyday of the 50s, 60s, and 70s was dying away) there was also a bigger push from the Civil Rights movement from Black people.
      And as we know, racists have got to be racist, so they redirected to a different easy target, meaning that - although the Italian-American community was an assimilated and integrated part of US culture, they did face renewed racist attacks. Particularly from specific quarters. Although I can't qwhite remember which kkkinds of people were particularly prone. I can Nat-see who it might be but I'm sure it'll come to me. 😁

    What really colors this song, for me, is that this is the first time Bo Burnham (the character, not the performer) has ever spoken positively about his father. Even in a disparaging way because he wishes he could be as oblivious and stupid as his dad so he could be as happy as he dad was.
    Like his relationship with his father ranges from outright hostility to utter apathy, and it's mentioned at least once a special that they have tenuous relations at best. But this is the first time he says he admires anything about the man, even in a bitter envious way.

  • @hehehe512
    @hehehe512 2 роки тому +137

    The line about Italians isn’t a joke or about fascist Italy or anything. It’s about Italians not being considered white yet, and therefore experiencing racial prejudice. This my sound absurd today, but it has long history in the US. Europe too, for that matter. It’s a long standing prejudice that southern Italians from the Mediterranean islands with their darker skin were supposedly more lazy, violent und stupid than northern Italians, from regions closer to Austria or Switzerland with their lighter skin. Italians aren’t the only example of this either. The Irish faced similar issues. Google ‘no Irish signs’ or ‘no Italians signs’. You’ll be surprised at the signs and newspaper articles that pop up.

      Yeah, there was a strong tradition of anti-italianism often paired with anti-catholic views. (And I personally don't like any religion, but discriminating people based on it is obviously not okay, especially not from the religious-indoctrinated lense of another religion that is just as fucked up) Italians in general were seen as criminals because of the existence of the Mafia (kinda reminds me how like 0,6% of criminality in Germany is committed by organized Arabic clans but it's always a super big thing in the newspaper (especially tabloids) and some people use that of course to agitate against anyone who slightly looks like an Arab).
      And you can even still see it, I know a lot of content creators who are 'ironically' anti-Italian because it's not considered the same as other kinds of racism and you can make jokes about doing weird gestures or whatever.

    • @kommi7658
      @kommi7658 2 місяці тому

    I honestly think that he sings in this song about how it was for some reason easier to be a white guy in 1985, carrying both a job and a family, dealing with news and how his dad definitely must have some secrets, because other way why it was that easy, because somehow its not as easy now for him as it was back then for his dad, but he doesnt means that its hard being a white guy now, but then realises that back then were also a bunch of problems, and then he comes to the conclusion that he wants to be his dad in 1985, because he heard about how it is being someone he would like to be in the song mostly from his dad

    If you can do a full deep dive into the bars of Vinnie Pax End of Days, one of the greatest rappers of all time, I will become a patron for a year minimum. It would probably be a 2 hour video while you picked the bars apart but man that would be epic! If not, still LOVE ya @Knoxhill you made a metal head appreciate lyrical hip hop. Thank you!
