    My favorite part of this song is that "The way the world works" isn't what either Bo or Socko are saying. At first it seems like a song with two battling perspectives. But "The way the world works" is actually the third perspective - the dynamic between them - Bo has all the power, and he sits there with a smile on his face pretending to care about Socko - but as soon as Socko starts to hit a nerve by pointing out reality, Bo immediately threatens his entire existence.
    Socko instantly folds and steps back in line, then Bo turns to the camera and sings "That's how the world works!"
    "I'll pretend to care about progressive issues, but if you even slightly inconvenience me while attempting to correct them I will destroy you." - THAT is how the world works. That is our government. Our society. One that pretends to care about making the world a better place, while actively destroying anyone or anything that actually could make real change.
    I've seen a bunch of reactors watch this, you're the only one who actually understood it.

      @kevinw.6177 5 місяців тому +8

      @@jmkiser33 Sure, sure... it's just that a lot of people have the opinion that "Things will be better if I have all the money and power over people" or "Things would be better if everyone who doesn't adhere to my religion was dead", etc.

    • @KimonoSuki
      @KimonoSuki 5 місяців тому +10

      But that IS Socko's perspective. Socko's entire verse was about that problem. That's why he says "Have you not been listening?" and then when Bo continues do it, he realizes, "oh he has. he just doesn't care." because as he said, that is how the world works...

      Yes. IMO, Inside is one of the best artistic responses from the early pandemic days. It is both deeply personal, about Bo Burnham's own struggles and health journey, while also capturing universal truths about being a human (esp. a millennial) in that time. A total masterpiece. Also, it's crazy that he created every aspect of it, including production, while in lockdown.

      @@citizenbrain8065 If you are talking about the political philosophy of abolishing all ranks of authority, specifically corporate authority, then it is simply a rebranded form of socialism, if you are talking about general philosophy, than you are discussing the abolition of social society altogether... maybe you could have been more clear. I would consider myself a progressive socialist, but I do not know how plausible a society is without hierarchy simply because we have never seen it done before.

    • @citizenbrain8065
      @citizenbrain8065 14 днів тому

      @JNB0723 Anarchism is NOT an abolition of social society. That's ridiculous. In fact, social society is more reliant on each other.
      We are the ones who coined the term Libertarian until it was coopted by Rothbard. Yes, we are against all heirarchy, and authority is subjective. A plumber has more authority when fixing my toilet than a surgeon. Authority is given, not assumed. There are many types of anarchists, and you're just lumping them all into one bin.
      I'm not going to sit here and debate my politics that have served me and my community extremely well while the system they protect is creating the problems. Take the time to educate yourself.. or don't. I don't give a shit.

    I’ve grown a lot since watching that the first time and am seeing a lot of stuff I missed. It’s not just about the things socko says but about his dynamic with Bo. Bo represents the people with the real power and means to create change, and when socko tries teaching him about the people at the bottom of the power scale, Bo wants to know what HE can do because the change has to come FROM him with HIS permission. Socko tells him to get with “it” meaning the liberation of those on the bottom or get out of the way because the only real way for those people to become liberated is to lead their own form of revolution. This perfectly ties back to MLK whose entire philosophy was based on oppressed minorities leading their own liberation. The Civil Rights era was led BY black people and the white people who “helped” either got with it or got out of the way. And look what happened, MLK was (allegedly) murdered by the FBI. In the exact same way that Bo ends up silencing Socko.
    When this song came out, I thought it was just Bo using a silly sock puppet to talk about a serious topic because that seemed funny. But now I realize it’s truly a poetic piece of art that deserves more appreciation.

    “Property is theft” is not from Marx, it’s from Proudhon.
    “Karl Marx, although initially favourable to Proudhon's work, later criticised, among other things, the expression "property is theft" as self-refuting and unnecessarily confusing, writing that "'theft' as a forcible violation of property presupposes the existence of property" and condemning Proudhon for entangling himself in "all sorts of fantasies, obscure even to himself, about true bourgeois property.”

    a) I love reactions to this song - and I especially love reactions where the reactor doesnt instantly react like anything vaguely communism is a deadly disease. Your input was very interesting, especially as I know next to nothing about MLKs death (being german)
    b) I must have listened to this song like 100 times. This is the first time I realize the intelligence of the line "Gives what they can and get what they need" in the beginning - it HAS to be hinting at "From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs" despite Bos character being the symbol of power/classism opposed to Socko. The fake happy world he is trying to simulate for the ones below him promises marxist values (even tho he later opposed Sockos marxist points). I dont know quite what that says about real life powers, especially those using communism as a buzz word for "enemy" but I find it immensely interesting

    After watching you discuss this and actually go in-depth into some of the topics and themes, I think you're one of the few reaction channels that I want to see go into some RTJ since it seems like you won't shy away from actually talking about the lyrics and subject matter. Definitely all of RTJ2, RTJ3, and RTJ4 would be worth doing, but 2 and 4 are the standouts imo. Like if you're talking about catching bars and breaking down complex lyrics, you've gotta do some Run the Jewels. El-P has still got one of my favorite bars of all time: "Got a Vonnegut punch for your Atlas Shrugs".

    Bo Burnham might be the most underrated artist of our generation. I mean, with Ren in the conversation it's debatable, but he's definitely slept on. I'll have to see if you have reacted to his old rap stuff.

    Hi Knox, that was sadly good. Bo and the Sock, would have made great teachers I would have straight A's. To the point, thats scary. First time listening. Your historical points, of influential persons and separation of the working status is appreciative. Read, listen carefully, communicate reciprocate...its healthy to learn...Peace🤙☝️😌

    hey Knox, I have a recommendation for you that I think you'd really like
    He is a german rapper/artist who also has partially english or japanese somgs along the german ones.
    He has some great medleys of EPs on his channel that includes lyrics. He is my favorite artist and is imo the best rapper in Germany.
    I think you'd really love him.
    His name is TJ-Beastboy. I can recommend the humaoid flamethrower and paranormal flowmachine medleys along with Wahnsinn²
    would be honored to hear your opinion

    iirc bo has referenced a french absurdist comedian who’d make jokes as himself and then use a sock puppet to have some actual points he’d want to say but comedy also came from the scenario and absurdity of it all. if i’m remembering that right then this song is a pretty clear homage to him.

    One of my favorite parts of this is that when Socko first comes out he doesn't even want to talk about the world, he is just like, "nah, you've got it." But then Bo forces him to speak on it and gets upset with him for doing so.

    You mentioned that a part of the dialogue sounds like parenting. A fun fact about parenting, at least in Sweden, is that we always hear that parents have the final say in every decision regarding parenting, but that is not the case. Trying to educate the kid to have an open mind, question everything, and keep learning, social services will step in and 'guide you.'
