  • Apple trees are budded or grafted onto apple rootstocks. Apple trees, when planted from seed, do not come true. When we plant an orchard, we want the orchard to be of a specific variety. We also select rootstocks based upon their ability to tolerate the climate and also so that they are tolerant to insects and diseases that are of specific concern in the environment they are being planted.
For more information on apple rootstock that may be suitable to your site, visit the E-Extension site and look for apple rootstocks. We developed the E-Extension site from the research based information generated from the NC 140 Regional Research Group. This information is provided to assist all of the apple growers in the United States to help their operations to be much more productive and profitable.

Down in Orlando, FL, the largest versions of the Geneva®series rootstocks (G.935, G.969, G.210, and G.890) do very well and help trees to produce early (2-3 years after planting), even with very little chilling. They tolerate heavy soil and the summer rains with no problems whatsoever, so I'm glad they help me grow apples in a place where most people think it's not possible. And I'm not referring to just Anna or Dorsett Golden, but dozens of varieties that I have tried (such as White Winter Pearmain, Sheepnose, Pixie Crunch, Golden Russet, Rubinette, GoldRush, Médaille d'Or, Mela Carla, Pumpkin Russet, etc.)
