- There are already many really good compilations the announcement of the death of Queen Elizabeth II. So this is a little different - this is how the death was announced on 8 UK TV channels in real time.
The video starts at 18:30, which is when Buckingham Palace made the announcement of her death and goes on until 18:46.
It shows the rolling coverage of BBC One/BBC News Channel, ITV, Sky News, Channel 4 and Channel 5. The 6th screen shows how programmes were interrupted on BBC Parliament and BBC Two and then the coverage on Welsh channel S4C. I have highlighted the audio of each channel's first mention of her death. Headphones are recommended
It's all synced up as near as possible, and actual time of day will be a bit out due to the various streaming/encoding/distribution delays..... but it gives a fairly accurate idea of what was being broadcast. - Розваги
Dermot Murnaghan, the Sky News presenter who announced the Queen's death first, was also the first man to announce the death of Princess Diana in the early hours of Saturday 31 August 1997. He was a youngish TV reporter doing the overnight news shift on ITV. Now that was unexpected!
Thank you for including S4C, who are too often overlooked in UK TV topics.
I'm surprised Sky News and Channel 5 announced the news first before the BBC, you would think naturally they would do it first since they are the national public broadcaster.
True, but they also had to be more careful because of that.
They weren't far behind and it came at a more inconvenient point in their coverage than Sky and C5 had.
The delay in the official announcement on the BBC is because they have to get BBC2 and all their other channels to join them at an arranged time
it's a photo finish
Great vid 👌
Is it likely that on Channel 4, the newsreader would’ve been told that the Queen had died and to get into the studio immediately as they were going on air in a few minutes?
They probably would have had someone on standby in the studio whatever in case the announcement came which it did, channel 4 were really quick out of the block tbh
I also find it interesting that irreverence is literally a part of Channel 4's mandate
not really. C4 news is on air just 30 minutes later normally, and there had been ample warning for a few hours before that the end was near.

doesn’t UKTV consist of alibi, GOLD, Dave, Drama, Yesterday, W, and Eden?
That's UKTV. This video is of TV channels in the UK.... so UK TV channels, not UKTV channels!
3:03 Bye bye, whatever show on the bottom left. I cannot think of the title!
hollyoaks, aparently
3:04 channel 4: hold on-
(dies)
😢
All the news anchor on a black attire as if they knew.
Operation London Bridge, mourning outfits kept on set just in case the monarch dies
@@itzborris530 Black outfits kept in case any important figure dies.
They didn't know for sure, but the indications and key words from the Palace like her being 'comfortable' meant it was obvious it was going to happen soon.
In the UK, news channels have plans in place in case the monarch dies. It had already been announced that she was unwell, so the news anchors were prepared in case of her death. If she recovered from her illness, it wouldn't have mattered that they wore black but it's best for them to be prepared in case of such news.
