Today we will cover Verticillium Wilt, what to look for, and some ways to help mitigate the issues it causes. This fungal disease not only can affect a multitude of garden plants, but shrubs, flowers, herbs and trees as well.

Thank you! Sorry to hear about your maple. I definitely miss ours since we've now had it taken down. We replaced it with a 3 year old Japanese Zeldova which doesn't get the verticillium wilt.

Are there any areas in the U.S. that are more prone to verticillium wilt than others?
Wow really good question! In my research so far, I haven't found where it may be more prevalent in one area versus another. There are over 300 species that are affected by it and the disease is found worldwide. It has been especially damaging to cotton crops in the US as well as mint crops, as two of the three species grown in the US for mint oil are highly susceptible to it. But it can turn up anywhere there are cultivated soils as well as in forested areas.
