      one thing I’ve learned is, unless I have actual experience with something, I keep my mouth shut.
      Ego wants to look good and sound good even if it doesn’t have a clue. It can even make me think I really know what I’m talking about when the truth is, I don’t.

      That’s where I’ve been for 9 years since my original awakening from alcoholism and addiction.
      I’ve been sober 9 years now and following non dual teachings like Rupert, Nisagardatta, Ramana Maharishi, Ram Dass, Gary Weber etc that whole time.
      I have a dedicated meditation practice as well and use 12 step to stay sober.
      But….especially the last 2 years, I have no interest in anything. I’ve found all the usual suspects empty.
      Ie gambling, alcohol, drugs, (except psychedelics) chasing money, materialism, consumerism, etc. etc.
      All of them empty.
      Not interested in watching movies, certainly not watching television and I dropped the news nine years ago to because that shit is poison the mind.
      It doesn’t seem like there’s anything else to do here on earth but get enlightened.
      I mean, what else is there to do?
      Nature is beautiful but I really have no desire to even leave my house anymore.
      People are, well, wonderful enough but I prefer to steer clear of people because people are also shit.
      Animals are wonderful but pets require a lot of attention etc.
      I’ve lost hope of getting enlightened too.
      At this point in my journey I just feel like life is hard, it’s full of suffering in all directions, it’s painful, pointless and meaningless.
      No one will even know I existed days or weeks after my death so what’s the point of even trying.
      I see no point in any of this and as Adyashanti said once:
      Maybe there is no point to life other than life just being life.
      We give absolutely everything all the meaning that it has, or doesn’t, as the case may be, and I am struggling to find any meaning to any of this knowing that any meaning I do give it isn’t necessarily true.
      Ugh 😣
      I’m glad you got some relief. That’s what we’re all looking for. 😢

      @@youarewhatyourelookingfor4496"It doesn't seem like there's anything else to do here on Planet Earth but get enlightened." VERY WELL SAID...!!! Although, the situation you've described is obviously very difficult, it's actually part of the Self Realization "process". And, typically, that "process" isn't a thing of overnight duration, and intellect/ego despises waiting for anything. The Buddha talked about suffering and relief from it for a reason. Intellect/ego prefers things to be as it wishes, rather than as they are; there's nothing that intellect/ego doesn't become disturbed by and want to make "better"; intellect/ego is never happy. It can experience the temporary relief of distraction with excitement and thrills for a bit - maybe - but never happiness. When things are not as intellect/ego prefers (i.e., the distractions of sensations, thrills and excitement), there is boredom, dissatisfaction and discontent. "The darkest hour is just before the dawn"; unfortunately, sometimes that hour appears to be considerably long. Constantly persist with meditation and listening to what Rupert Spira talks about (this particular video is a great fundamental reference point). Here's something I could relate to that helped me. In reference to Self Realization, Ramana Maharshi once said that when your head is in the tiger's mouth, all that can be done is hang onto its tail. I'm not so sure that I'm "Awakened", "Enlightened" or "Self Realized", but I'm very sure that I'm happy (if that means anything at all).

      It is. I used to experience boredom. I decided to "sit" with that experience rather than seeking to avoid it. I became present to what my body was experiencing. I then sought to increase the experience of boredom even more. A strange thing happened. As I remained present to what my body was feeling, the boredom began to dissipate. It has never returned to me. What was left was the ability to wait patiently, without the story "boredom" to disturb my peace.

    Oftentimes if you wait those 5 minutes in meditation and silence when those impulses arise, they fall and you end up doing something completely different, or doing nothing at all, and it happens just naturally.
    It's important to let things be as they are, to fully integrate and be inclusive about all of experience and to release. Those are the key practices:
    - let it be
    - recognize and integrate it
    - release it as the next thing comes into its place.

      ✨👋🤓✨Hey Dean!
      "More 'socially acceptable' to complain than it is to praise (etc.)"...???
      Hmmmm... You could be right about that, but my experience has always been that people mean what they're saying when they're bitching and whining; they're complaining because they or someone else is hurting. I don't recall ever seeing anyone sharing pain just to be social.
      Why would a happy person complain about anything if they have happiness to share? It makes no sense that anyone would do otherwise; complaining only makes things worse. In my world, people who complain do so because their pain is their reality; they're not doing it just to be social at all.
      Your point is well taken and it could very well be right, but I've never come across anything like that. In steel mills, shipyards, the navy, working in management in labor positions and in any recreational endeavor, never have I encountered anyone complaining when or because they're happy.
      Actually, complaining to be social is pretty funny; it would be good material for some kind of stand up routine!
      You're just puttin' us on...right?

    It's kind of hard to explain what enlightenment is but it's basically from what I understand my self to be, awareness, that feeling of you in which thoughts feelings sensations perceptions live in and pass by. It's so simple yet so hard to describe.

    • @youarewhatyourelookingfor4496
      @youarewhatyourelookingfor4496 Рік тому +2

      What’s to describe? We all have the same awareness.
      We all know what it is, just that some of us are aware we are aware.
      To point someone at it I just say “what is before your mind? What is it that is aware of your mind? You are that.”
      They either understand or they don’t. If they don’t they aren’t meant too I figure.
      The Bhagavad Gita noted that it’s immoral to unsettle someone’s mind who isn’t ready so I watch for that too using intuition to tell me whether to share about it or not. 😊

    • @Da_Xman
      @Da_Xman Рік тому

      There's loads and loads of confusion regarding the nature of "Awakening", "Enlightenment" and "Self Realization" - what those are, any differences between them, how it's "done" and when it occurs. However, the only approach to any of that is to want Absolute Truth even more than the breath of Life while continuing doing what you typically do and be who you believe yourself to be. "What you are seeking is causing you to seek." (Cheri Huber) Ramana Maharshi also said that Atman ("individualized" Brahman) is guiding us to itself by using our individual conditioning to do so. It's all a matter of confidence in whatever "Highest Power" there is (whether intellect/ego is informed about it in any kind of detail or not).

I mean some of these desires are not so bad on the surface, for example, go out to try to meet new people and make new friends, but because I know it comes from a sense of lack I refuse to do it and instead I look inward. What does me working in a retail store bored folding clothes have to do with me feeling like I'm seperate from others ?

    • @FrogmortonHotchkiss
      @FrogmortonHotchkiss 8 років тому +9

      Yeah, he should be careful with language. The word 'boredom' can be applied to different things - not just existential restlessness. However, your retail suffering might actually be existential in origin even if this true cause isn't obvious to you. On the other hand, I'm sure if you asked Rupert to fold clothes for eternity, a sensation one might call 'boredom' or 'frustration' would arise, as the body-mind isn't a robot that can perform repetitive tasks on command without experiencing some unpleasant reaction. That mechanism has its own biological & psychological directives that are somewhat in conflict with folding clothes just because your boss told you to. If you were folding clothes to save the life of your child, that might motivate you more strongly.
      But his answer is appropriate in context. Your example is different from the questioner's. The questioner is talking about that familiar feeling of being at home with no immediately pressing task. There is a sense of empty time that you want to fill with stimulation and activity. It is worth looking into this to learn what is existential anxiety and what is just energy looking for an outlet.

    • @edmilio

      Dakota Y There could be a feeling of happiness for all the good you do to help the success of the business which in turns pays you money for your success. You also enhance the customer experience. At that level you can get how connected your act of folding clothes connects to others and continuosly expands. On another level the peace that you are as a pure being is not a feeling of boredom. Being bored is just a thought appearing on your seperate self. It is generated by you. You would generate other feelings once you have awareness of your always already connectedness.

      The feeling of separation is not only in relation to others but to present reality. Boredom is often if not mostly a resistance to life as it is unfolding in this moment. Here is a quote from Anthony deMello which speaks to the same issue: "Loneliness is not cured by human company. Loneliness is cured by contact with reality." This is why you can feel lonely even in the company of others.

      Being bored is the compulsive motivation for activity, that activity functioning as a distraction to Just Being. Intellect/ego despises "Just Being" and that compulsive >need< for distraction motivates "creativity", "constructiveness" and "productiveness". However, all that still occurs once the compulsive/obsessive >needs< of intellect/ego subside through meditation and learning what "Just Being" actually means and is.
      But, somehow, I have a hunch you're aware of that and am curious as to the nature of your comment.

    Rupert:
    The Awareness needs no "enlightening" or awakening to a true self. It is as it is (well--uh--of course it is...or be's)> It is full--Purna. Contented (santosha). No sadhana necessary--no goal to be reached (for).
    The whole "game" is for the temporal entity (the avatar) to achieve or not-achieve (why quibble over semantics) the state of enlightenment --i prefer enlightening-- for itself. To become eternal. To turn in the conditioned entity costume, to transform it, into an eternal unconditioned entity costume To play the "i am the Awareness" game at the next level.
    Bhaktivedanta--or Prabhu something or other--allows that we can reach One state he calls the "Personality of Godhead" which has the many lower aspects raised up to a higher plane (sorta-not-quite purified by Light). In Christian terms we can be "born again" from the flesh into spirit.
    So that is the game and just like Mario we can keep getting more lives and playing our way thru all the levels until we "win". Then we see a little note that says there is a path to a next level--a faster level--we can play next. In other words the fun of playing is extended.
    So why hurry straight to the goal? Leave the theatre in the middle of the movie? If we came here to avoid the eternal boredom of resting contentedly in the self why go back to being that eternal couch-potato?
    The "Path" the "Search" the angst and the whole shebang (?) is for the temporal entity's transformation. Poor little me can Become and enjoy the fruits from the tree-of-eden and become a Big-ol'-Rich-son-of-a-gun. What a (no)thought huh.
    Or does the Awareness actually "need" some-thing some-body or most importantly Some FUN?....!!....
    Play...Imagine...Create...Laugh and Cry. Celebrate as a Zorba the Buddha (Osho).
    C'mon little non entity, we are a rootin' for ya.
    Yes!

      @@CrazyUncleMike That’s an interesting question. When I think about it, I struggle to find anything I’d truly call “doing nothing.” As a beginner in meditation, I could be wrong here, but meditation feels closest to that idea. It’s not boring, but I still crave the excitement from other activities, so I usually have to force myself to do it. As for boring tasks, I mean mundane daily activities like washing the dishes or cleaning the house. However, I sometimes feel that with practice, I could view these tasks as meditation too. I hope to one day reach a state where I can immerse myself in meditation continuously.

    Are we not meant to live and enjoy life? Regardless of what level of conscious awareness we have arrived at, I feel, that we are existent in order to fully live.

    • @saidas108
      @saidas108 10 років тому +7

      I guess it depends on how you define "fully" living. Most people define it as having as many pleasurable and "fulfilling" experiences as possible.
      Try this sometime. Sit quietly and try to recall all of the experiences of any sort you've had in your entire life and see how many you can actually recall. Then see how vague those memories are compared to the actual experience. Now quickly think of all of the billions of experiences you've had in total. I think it's rather sobering to realize that you can only recall an infinitesimal number of experiences and those you can are quite vague and distorted. So is that really the goal of life then? Really? If so, I want my money back! :)

    • @fuldagermany
      @fuldagermany 10 років тому +4

      saidas108 So, what is really the goal of life then? I was talking with a friend earlier in the day and she and I are going through some very tough circumstances. I mentioned that it seems that diamonds are not really made of coal, so I have read, but that they are formed deeper down in the earth (from what original material I do not know) and that pressure does create those brilliant gems; oysters get sand inside of them that irritates them and they form pearls. I asked, "Could it be that all the difficulties we experience really does have some kind of soul refining purpose?"
      Are we not here to dance and play and to love? By the way, I remember some things so very strongly and clearly ... the happy and the sad ... the loving and the painful. Some experiences are like smoke and vanish. It was my understanding that we are meant to experience the present: the now. I still have no answers to much of anything ... FYI. When things get sorted out in my current situation, I want revisit many of Rupert's videos and just listen and see what I may learn on a visceral level. I find that being distracted makes really understanding more than difficult.

    • @saidas108
      @saidas108 10 років тому +6

      Minahh People have different ideas of what the "purpose of life" is of course. People who enjoy a cushy of fun life seldom seriously consider such things and sort of skip through life. Nice life if you can get it :)
      The first of the Buddha's Four Noble Truths is that the nature of the world is suffering so one can start from there. Thoreau had it right with, "Most men lead lives of quiet desperation."
      If one doesn't believe in reincarnation, then it makes sense to squeeze every drop out of life and have as many pleasurable experiences as is possible. If one does however, then the purpose of life changes. Reincarnation is dictated by our actions in each life; karma in other words.
      When one tires of the journey (life after life after life) then one begins in earnest to be free of it and inquires into what causes it and more importantly, how to cease it.
      It really depends on where one is in their spiritual evolution. I believe that everything that happens is to lead us to the ultimate goal of God, Self-Realization, whatever you please, which to me is the purpose of life.

    • @fuldagermany

    Nah…The times you are off the mark, using to distract is when you don’t enjoy. Humans enjoy…Well made films and movies (knowing the work put into them) without enjoyment and engagement is a disservice to the creators…same for books and food and drinks…Not enjoying your food or just seeing it as a distraction is an insult to the food and off the mark…Having drinks and not enjoying the inebriation and doing it just to distract yourself is off the mark….Meditation out of some sense of rigid obligation or that it’s “good “ for you is off the mark. No one knows where it will take you, just do it let the process work on you and…enjoy it… When you meditate just meditate… when you eat and drink just eat and drink. When you watch movies and read books play chess play soccer put on a puppet show just do those things.When bored be bored. We’re making love make love. When getting drunk get drunk.
