    In case you're wondering, I'll be painting the frame off camera. I can't wait to see what happens to the small plants over the next week!

    I'm glad you are learning how to use the grow lights! It will be so useful for me, I always wanted to learn how work since you learning is my chance too. Thank you Chuck.🤗

    Very gorgeous garden! May i ask, what grass are you using for your lawn? Do they do well in hot summer?

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  4 роки тому

      It's kikuyu grass. Very invasive and spreads quickly because they put out lots of rhizomes/runners underground. If you trim them during summer, they will dry out very quickly, but will grow back once it starts raining and gets cooler. If you leave them long, they will be able to withstand summer.

    I don't think 8-10k lux is enough personally chuck especially with only 8 hours of light. Full sunlight is around 130k lux. I'd aim for at least 25-30k lux and take it from there upwards. Playing around with length of days etc will be interesting. I tend to think that 12 hours is the minimum for getting any sort of growth as otherwise they think it's winter and don't grow (at least in my climate)

      Thanks man! I wanted to discover the values myself so I didn't specifically ask you about these the last time we had a chat. From what I can tell, using the current height of the frame, I have potentially up to around 150k lux depending on how high I set the power, and how close the plants are to the light.
      My initial thought was to see if I can replicate overcast days at minimum power level, because I will be using these on seedlings, which right now do not need much light to grow (winter and all). But once I move on to simulating spring/summer, I will have to ramp things up.

    I hope you will find a sempervivum from Mexico, makes many babies out to the side and has pink blooms and seems to have disappeared from San diego, CA.

    Things have actually moved on since those diagrams were created regarding the peaks being around blue and red. In fact green has just as much of an impact as the other two bands especially in a canopy where the green light reflects down to lower leaves. Recommend watching the apogee UA-cam channel

      The grow light is only 150w. The 1000w naming is pretty naughty but lots of them do it

      Interesting, I haven't encountered this in the sources I have been reading so far (about the green band) so I'll be seeking more literature on this specifically.
      As for the wattage, I figured it was like household LED bulbs being advertised by their incandescent equivalents. So, thanks for confirming.

    I would be very curious on what you find is the best Daily Light Integral (DLI) for your succulents for stress/blush coloring with your current setup.

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  4 роки тому

      Me too. I do not have the right tools/meters to figure that out, so for now I'll just go with lux and a bunch of rough computations to get their PAR equivalent. Basically still taking my "indicator plants" approach, but this time with some lux numbers to support them.

    You mentioned in the beginning that there are the purple growlights and full spectrum ones and you want to do more research on them. I can tell you from my experience that the purple ones do not work great for succulents. I used them at first and it made my mature plants stretch towards them. Even if you have them close to the plants it does not do a great job. I have read about them a bit and learned that the spectrum that they produce is not ideal for CAM plants like succulents, maybe you can read more about it since I could not find out more about it. For now I use them for my leaf propagations. I noticed that the little rosettes do not stretch under them and since they are not that intensive they do not damage the little plants.

    Again, an excellent episode - thank you, Chuck! Wished some of my teachers at school would have had the same ability to interestingly mix theory + practice.
    One question rather related to the first part: I understood that the Sempervivums are supposed to regulate (=consume) somehow surface humidity in the winter months. But aren't you afraid of a potential opposite effect? In my garden humidity seems to evaporate more slowly when I have plants covering the surface .
    Furthermore, in one of your former videos you talked about a 50/50 mix of garden soil and scoria. However, on the video the percentage of scoria seems to be much higher? Am I right for this area?
    Thanks and looking forward to the next episodes!

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  4 роки тому

      Yeah more groundcover will make things more humid. I haven't had much problem with that with my other tapestries - just 1 or 2 rotten rosettes that get easily replaced by offsets when they start getting active again in spring. So I do not generally worry much about it.
      As for the second question, you have a keen eye! I generally do 1:1 or less if I know I am filling up a large volume in the ground. But when I am unsure where I'll be using the mix, I just add more scoria. Cause sometimes I end up using the mix in pots.

      @@Cerriscapades - thanks Chuck! I understood (probably badly 😜) that one objective of the Sempervivum-planting was to make things more dry, this is why I asked.
      Looking forward to see the results anyways!

    Items in the garage not used should be gone. Remember if it doesn’t love you back get rid of it. Plus mice or rats love to live among items in the garage.
