I'm installing a 6-inch thick concrete slab on this job that'll be used as a storage garage. Now, I've installed 100s of concrete slabs just like this one for garages and sheds over the last 45 years. What I've experienced is if the gravel base is done properly (using the right gravel or crushed stone) and the base is thick enough for the area of the country. The slab should be just fine for a single story garage. I Maine, where I live, the gravel base is usually one to two feet deep. It's installed in lifts of 8" and compacted solid. The gravel is either 3/4" crushed gravel, 3/4" crushed stone, or a mixture of both.
In the video, you can see the gravel base and how we form this six inch concrete slab in preparation for the pour.

Mike ,here in L.I.N.Y. to do that job you would have to put a footing in first than get it inspected or have the inspector come out when the hole is dug look at the job then do a monolithic pour ...

1:54 - What's good with that base is that it is UNIFORM, with no hard spots (big rocks) and no soft spots (uncompacted, voids).

I find it in good practice to do layout before forming😉

Good info. thought you did some slabs making a 1 foot farrow around the perimeter setting rebar in them also.

That will make a great hop scotch board. If you are going to legally build any structure on it, you first need footings. The entire perimeter, except at openings, must have footings and be inspected BEFORE pouring. You cannot install a load bearing wall on a 6” slab. Anchors must be imbedded in the footing and spaced per code, to tie the exterior walls to the foundation.

      @
It must have been a police detective inspector. No building inspector would sign off on a 6” slab without a perimeter footing for a structure to be built on it. It’s probably a driveway. Just makes a good UA-cam video.

Different codes for different places and states. Don't change horses in the middle of a stream if it's been working all these years. 🎉

If it was a heated garage, would that make a difference?

I noticed you don't seem to do the rat wall, or a 42" footing - Michigan . I am looking to build a 50x100x16'high , 2x6 walls want to be able to drive a telehandler inside

Mike. I have pit set a mobile home it is setting on cinder blocks. I am going to put a 15ft patio all the way around it. It was suggested to put rebar into the cinder blocks to hold concrete to cinder blocks. If slab moves that doesn't seem like a good idea. We had to haulbin 3 foot of dirt on one side. Fyi. Tie it together? Or put that buffer piece like in your video

Mike, don't know if this is the best way to ask a question but I live in Colorado so we get freeze/thaw too. Had a brand new driveway poured last May (2024) that had cracks from one side to the other within 20-days after the pour. This winter (2024-2025) it really started to crack all over the place. I contracted the guy that we contracted who has really done nothing. I don't really know how to get help with this and was hoping you may be able to point me in the right direction. Thank you in advance.

this is crazy really. the owner is counting on ZERO movement of the ground at such a shallow depth. that is a very, very UNREALISTIC EXPECTATION. heck, one good rainy year and that ground will soften up and cause problems. lets not forget, water moves underground as much or MORE then it does above.

Large heavy items will most likely be the reason.
