  • Grand Designs Series 5 Episode 3 With Kevin McCloud.
    BAFTA winning Grand Designs is widely recognised as the pre-eminent series on modern architecture and design in Britain. It was originally conceived as a documentary series presented by designer and writer Kevin McCloud that takes us into the heart of life’s great unfolding human stories, where ordinary families risk all to experiment with architecture, technology, and their own lifestyle.
    Now in its 24h year, Grand Designs is one of Channel 4’s biggest returnable factual series and has grown into a global phenomenon, selling in over 100 territories. Apart from the TV series, the Grand Designs brand has also expanded to include books, a monthly magazine, architectural awards and a biannual exhibition, Grand Designs Live.

    Normally on this show they build these unbelievably complicated and expensive houses with architect`s plans and steel frameworks and all kinds of headaches. Kevin condemns their decisions, problems arrive, money runs short, blah blah blah. Not here- they all work hard with a very affordable kit house, very few problems and they end up with a gorgeous house. And a very low loan payment in the end. I love this house and the family- they are all so happy and grateful for what they have, and they were able to build their own house and the kids will have that memory for the rest of their lives. Who could ask for more!

    Such lovely people, and such a shame they couldn't afford to rent somewhere, despite both of them working, until both his parents died. But what a lovely legacy. Beautiful house and amazing design. So well planned on all sides. Congratulations to the family and to the finnish company

    This was my cousin that built this house, I love going to visit them in this house. It’s such a special place, cousin’s wife actually won the lottery, they are now multi millionaires but still live in this house and said no where could be better. Really proud of them

    I love that her parents gave them the land to have his workshop and keep her close to her equine business and multi-generations close-knit for their children. But the warmest fuzzy is that his parents bequest will hug them close for as long as it stands. A woodworker with a woodhome. Money, time, and love well-spent. Bravo!

    8:40 "The Finns manage their millions of acres of woodland sustainably" Well...depends on what you mean by sustainable. In some ways yes, but in some ways no, just look at that forest where he is treading as he says that line: It's not a 'natural' forest, it's an industrial tree field. Everything is artificially made, all man-planted and grown only for commercial use. All uniform species, no old trees for natural forest biodiversity. Just the absolute maximum amount of that certain tree species for profit. And unbelievably this is what most of Finland's massive forest landscape looks like: artificial commercial man-planted totally "unnatural" industrial tree farming.

      But constantly replaced farmed trees are still adding massive amounts of oxygen to the atmosphere, as young tree growth does. Not much biodiversity in the thousands of acres of corn, soybeans, rice and wheat taking the place of old growth forest either, which do nothing for air quality or for mitigating temperature.

    There is a man, there is a woman.
    Man building the house, woman earning to keep up the family.
    Just a husband, just a wife.
    No wokeism. No feminism.
    Great accomplishment. They build a home.

    Funny hearing all that praise of how 'fast' it is erected, when a prefab concrete slab house structure that size would've been erected in one day by three men (plus half a day of seam work for two men, then later on half a day of removal of molds etc. for two men). It would've required a crane for the day though.
    I don't mean to knock timber structures, just pointing out some benchmarks of other alternatives.

    • @drrydog
      @drrydog Рік тому +2

      in the states, concrete work is so expensive that most people fall back on timber to save money. I just finished about 14 yards of cement. patios, upright form walls, and steps + huge driveway. Did all the work myself, with the cement truck driver just sitting in his truck all day. Reason to not hire, the bids were 48k for everything but the footing forms. which were about 18k I think. did it all myself in 4 days. with 2k worth of cement. and bought one new float.
