Music was brilliant. People were happy. You could be free and there was no insta google twitter book for the world to watch what you were doing. And people could agree to disagree. Instead, now people are fat too hysterical and everyone gets so deeply offended by anything. Ill stop drunken ranting. Great band, excellent song. Takes me back.
paul draper is without a doubt one of the greatest singer / songwriters of recent times. how many bands put as much effort into all their tracks as mansun did. there are mansun b-sides that sit among the best offerings of say .... oasis, blur or radiohead. it's a musical crime that bands like the feeling, the script or even coldplay get so much airplay when a great band like mansun slipped under the radar. if they'd got more credit, perhaps they'd still be going & still be making great music.
Probably the best version of this song I have heard. I love how much bottom end there is. Also, the guitarist had something about him. Saw these at the Edinburgh venue around this time with Travis supporting.
I honestly haven't heard the entire album. This song is incredible..My #1 and 2 of the late 90's are.... Radiohead "OK Computer"..and Echo and the Bunnymen "Evergreen"... Obviously 1997 was a very influential year for me.
Ok, Andy Bell of Erasure WAS my favorite singer of all time but Paul Draper of Mansun, there is IS NO greater singer than you. I put you in the same category as Steve Perry of Journey. Damn it, I want Mansun back, get in that studio.
Do you think Chad's net worth is really that much? I think I read that amount on one of the websites and thought it was a typo. Mansun were never million sellers, royalties don't pay that much, and they never went beyond headlining mid-sized venues so unless he won the lottery, I can't see him accumulating that sort of fortune. I know he wrote some tv music and a kids tv episode and that he's done well for himself career-wise post Mansun, but again, it's not a multi-million job he's doing.I love Mansun and Dominic's playing and I'm not disagreeing with you - I just wonder where a NET worth of that vast some has come from.
When the net figure is over GBP 20 million, then this gross is over GBP 30 million - and. Mansun certainly never sold that many records for him to earn that sort of money, or had that sort of career (and Mansun never broke the US). Obviously, he's had plenty of work since over the years, but again, the careers he's taken on wouldn't earn him anything like what's been quoted. It's not my business to analyze how much he's been making over the years - and Dominic is a supremely talented individual who seems to excel at whatever he turns his hand too, and he fully deserves everything he's earned - but the figure that we both saw, I think is very highly unlikely.
They might live comfortable lives (Stove and Andie, I don't know - do they?), but as we both said GBP 22 million net (around GBP 35 million gross) - for me, that's a ridiculous figure. You could count plenty more bands that have had longer and just as successful careers than Mansun, and I can guarantee you, the whole band has not made even half of that amount. They may play festivals, but there's is so much more to a festival's payroll than paying the headliner (and how many did they headline?). They did plenty of touring, but they never played more than mid-sized venues; certainly not stadiums or arenas - and they were never a success in the US, which is where large amounts of money will be earned. I'm not forgetting at all that albums have kept selling over the years, but not by prolific standards - and there was only three albums and a compilation, and none of them, to date, have re-entered the charts (at the time only two broke the top ten album charts - although admittedly the debut did go to no. 1 - and even the amazing Kleptomania failed to break the Top 100) . Remember, we're talking about the exaggerated net worth of one individual not the rest of the band. I know Paul Draper is out on the road again, but we were trying to justify Dominic Chad's current quoted GBP 22 million net that the internet has dug up from somewhere. I know it's difficult to believe, but not every band stays together / reforms for the money - when the musical differences or personalities are that great, people have no desire to be in the band anymore, or people are doing something in their lives which they find that more satisfying or fulfilling, then no amount can keep a band together. Mansun - particularly the two principals - at the end, were a very unhappy band; I doubt no amount amount of money could have kept them together. Dominic has said he wants no part of Mansun anymore and has a completely different life and career now, which PD has acknowledged, and has pretty much put the mockers on a Mansun reunion. So no, it's not just simple logic... As I said, it's none of my business to work out how much Dominic has earned, but having been in the music business myself once upon a time (not as a musician), I just think it's a ridiculous, and frankly unreal figure plucked out of nowhere, and that's my final word. Other than that, I wish Mansun would reform, I'd certainly travel back home to the UK to see them.
lucky enough to see them twice 2nd time was the best cos i was too stoned the 1st time haha saw em come on stage the can't remember owt else but love this band
This song is one of the lost Britpop gems from the 90s. Discovered this on a compilation called "The Brit Box" - well written orchestration, great hook.
i feel i missed out on the best of mansun, but managed o see them live 4 times and once before they split. also had met chad outside the tour coach and he invited me in to play back gammon with paul (dunno how to play t) amazing group:)miss them. xx

I heard this song in the mid 90s on radio 1 back when they played good music and then recorded it when the video came on M2 an MTV channel for indie alt music which also now doesn't exist and then one summer I was in Dubai with my family at a music store and all cassettes were like 50p. I bought all of mansuns albums and loved every single one. They are so underrated and ignored it's bonkers they should have been at the level of oasis and blur but for whatever reason they were overlooked. Thank u for the music Paul!
The missing link between Bowie and Radiohead, Mansun was vastly superior to many of the bands that emerged during the "Brit Pop" explosion of the early to mid-90s. Paul Draper could sing like an angel as this clip shows. Two very fine albums, and this brilliant song and they were gone. Remember them this way.
No idea why Mansun weren't bigger. Excellent band!
I second that, they were amazing
Because they were too edgy, the public preferred soft music like David Gray and Travis
First album syndrome…..cracking first album then downhill from there
They were great. But music isn't about becoming rich and famous.
I miss the 90s....when tunes were good and bands were cool...

@@metalpunk3785 You're spot on. Love this song, in particular. Good mates. Good times.
Good times , glad I was a teenager through it
Guitar music seems to be in a bit of a dead end these days.
The 90's were the best decade for Western music, culture and politics in general. We peaked and are now in decline.
Attack of the grey was amazing but SIX was a phenomenal piece of music artistry. Everyone must listen and appreciate true talent
One of the most underrated bands ever, they deserve to go much further than they did, and achieve more recognision.
Phenomenal sound.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Paul played all the instruments on the recording of Wide Open Space (except for the drums!)
Well done! Now Billy Corgan played ALL of the instruments on the entire Siamese Dream album........(except for the drums!)
You are probably confused if you are writing that on a mansun tune, you like it but you like smashing pumpkins better, fair enough.
Paul Draper Official why?
Did Paul play the guitar solo?
Are you Paul? Dom might disagree.
There's something very haunting, melancholic and wise about Mr.Draper's voice. Love it.
Absolutely fantastic - Mansun should have been so much bigger than they were. Totally awesome

An amazing song from one of the best British bands of the 90's Still sounds as good today as ever. Awesome vocals and guitar playing.
awesome vocal control
To much talent in one band. Sad that not everyone recons, lucky to be a fan of their work. Much appreciated.
One of the best performances you'll ever see on Jools Holland

what a fucking wonderful voice.
It's criminal that Paul is not currently writing/singing. Is he even capable of hitting a bum note? Absolutely EXQUISITE!!!

What voice, what a band. Highly underrated.

the 90's was the Golden Age for Modern Rock!!!
BRILLIANT .....
This performance was Mansun's introduction to the world.
This song is freaking epic- one of my favorite songs for a rainy day. Amazing performance here, this is alternative gold
beauty personified
Drummer is having fun!
Wow, never expected such a tight performance and stand up vocals. Ignore the year, just listen and enjoy.
what a voice
This was such a distinctive tune back in 97....
Mansion reminded me of 90's Duran Duran, the vocal, the hair, the control...that big sound..epic.
Mansun.
It's a shame Mansun imploded when they did. Great memories of listening to this in the car when it came out. Fantastic tune.
Fantastic singer
how this band never got as big as Blur is beyond me
I agree. And Blur are my favourite band
They follow me on Twitter, thats enough for me.
