Who was Raja Harishchandra?
Raghukul or the Raghuvanshis of the Solar dynasty are often known for their righteous nature. The most famous of them all being Shri Ram who is also an incarnation of Vishnu. But there were many other rulers from this dynasty who were highly virtuous, one of them being Raja Harishchandra, an ancestor of Shri Ram.
King Harishchandra lived in the Treta Yuga and is till date known for his honesty, truthfulness and righteousness. During his time as the ruler of the kingdom, there was happiness and prosperity in all of the land.
The citizens of the land began lamenting over their former King’s departure. The King was overwhelmed by the love and emotions of his people, that he stopped mid-way to console them before leaving. Seeing this Vishwamitra got furious and with a metal rod began beating the King and family to leave sooner. Vishwadevas, the guardians of the directions saw this horrific sight, and condemned the action of Vishwamitra. Hearing the criticism, an enraged Vishwamitra cursed the Vishwadevas to take birth as humans. It is said that the five Vishwadevas were born as the Upapandavas, the five sons of Draupadi who were killed in their sleep after the Mahabharata war.
Eventually Harishchandra began working and living in the cremation ground. One day his wife came to the cremation ground, wailing with their dead son who died due to a snake bite. Both began mourning over their dead son. Harishchandra even began contemplating killing himself as he could not fulfill the duties of a husband or a father. But then he realized that if he does so without the permission of his master, he had to bear the consequences of it in his next birth. After some time, he came to his routine and began to devote himself toward the cremation of his only child. His wife therefore began to get things ready to cremate her dead son’s body, but Harishchandra told her that he would not let her do so without paying the fee. Lord Indra appeared and pleased with the King, restored his son’s life. At that time, all the deities appeared led by the Dharmaraj and accompanied by Vishwamitra. They praised Harishchandra for his good qualities like forgiveness, self-control, truthfulness, and invited him to heaven. But Harishchandra refused to go to heaven without the permission of his master (Chandala). Dharmaraj then reveals to the king that he himself assumed the form of a Chandala to test the King. The king again refused to go to the heaven without the people of his kingdom who lamented over his departure and are equal sharers in his merits. He requested Indra to allow the people of his kingdom to accompany him to heaven, at least for one day. Indra accepted his request. After that, Harishchandra along with his people ascends to heaven.
After his departure to heaven, Vashistha - the sage or Kul-Guru of Harishchandra's royal dynasty - ended his tapasya of 12 years. He came to know about the unfortunate events that had happened to Harishchandra during these years. He started a severe fight with Vishwamitra, but was ultimately pacified by Brahma. Brahma explained to him that Vishwamitra was only testing the King and had actually helped him ascend to the heaven.

Sorry to say .... Even in 2021 the story of Raja Harishchandra broke my heart and cry a lot ... Literally crying 🤕😔
unless you burn like sun, you can't shine like sun whether its 1920 or 2020
*@promita pal* Seriously, it was a test, because the DHARMA is not so easy as how you think it to be. You cannot achieve Nirvana or Salvation from the death & birth cycle without doing hard work and sacrifice of your materialistic joy.
From this story, I realized we should not hold grudge or revenge to people who treat us bad…we should utilise that time to move forward towards our goals..That’s only the way for us to reach heaven.
How do u know? Recently spoke with any god or dead person ?
Why hindus are obsessed with next life, after life and forgets to live in present life??
Rightly said ❤
I used to read all the Hindu Puranas as a kid and was getting mindblown by that. I have written exams of Mahabharata and Ramayana because I enjoyed reading it. Im not bragging. Im just sad that today's kids do not care about these stories and don't spend much time acknowledging this.
how did you read puranas tho don't you need a guru for that?

Nice Outlook to life man.
Man its all is a leela its a system to develop a civilized human society otherwise no one know how to live in a civilized society it all for the greater good. Nobody wants to go to the heavens true but human wants to live a fully developed civilized society right so heavens is all about that a full developed civilized society. 🙇

Vshvamitra is a sage with so much rage, he mis used his position only to curse people.
It’s so good to finally hear our stories, after my chittamma died, this is the first time I am hearing the story of Harischandra
She used to see something very common place and intertwine a story from there,
One day when we were washing our legs in the village after coming back from playing, she said wash the back of your legs, listen to the story of Harischandra who didn’t wash the back of his legs and what he had to face and then told the above story to us.
How's it related to not washing the back of the legs?

If only rulers like Harishchandra lived in today's times instead of thieves and scammers sitting in parliament houses 😔
I love your channel. These stories are glorious and you make them much more accessible with your lovely voice. I also enjoy the artwork. Thank you for your hard work!

A person who can beat a woman & a child...can not be called a sage...😶😠
@Kamlesh pretty sure you haven't picked up a book about Hinduism... Lmao ignorant
First of all this story not related to maya jagat, this story is related to spiritual worlds(14loka) where king was tested for next realm heaven. No human is involved in this story. Only souls were facing test.
@@9599961355 And where does this information come from ?
@@lautheimpaler4686 the physical world which is known as Maya Jagat. U can't fly in Maya jagat. U can't readjust ur size. U can't see future past with physical eyes. So these stories can't be about maya jagat. A woman can't make her husband re-live after death by players. But spiritual world is completely different from maya jagat. Here lord hanuman fly. Ghost give illusions to normal human beings. A woman can be virgin even after having five husbands. Try to be more conscious more these stories. As u know world is flat as per quran. But this world is spiritual world which is flat. Either u can go in dark realms or heavens so spiritual world is flat. This also confirm lord ram not born in Maya jagat. He born in spiritual realm(dynasty) ayodhya. Lord shiva is not a human being as idiots suppose so. This is something which can't be seen normally except via bhakti marg, shakti marg, tantra etc.

Such a tragic story
Sages are always controversial in any era and in any religion. I disagree with this theory of selling wife and child for sake of a sage ego. No matter what the end result, A King must always protect his countrymen (which Includes his Family) at all cost. We cannot preach wrong things to our future generations in the name of mythological events. Jai Kisan. Jai Jawan. Jai Hind.
Well I guess even though we shouldn't trust or follow anyone blindly as sages are not God and there is a clear difference between brahman and brahmin, but if you see the larger picture, the sage was Vishwamitra, these cruel activities comes easy to him. 😂

Many people base themselves on what they see in the Mahabaratha or even in the Ramayana, but did you know that the Rigvedic legends had a great influence on the development of the Mahabaratha or even the Ramayana which took over a lot of Rigvedic legends. the history of Harishchandra dates back to the time of the Rigveda which was his first mention. the Rigveda tells that Harishchandra was the son of King Trishanku, Harishchandra was a descendant of the Ikshvaku people.
Harishchandra was the husband of Shaivya also call Taramati. Harishchandra and Shaivya had no male offspring in other words a son, Harishchandra wishes to have a son to perpetuate his lineage and take over his kingdom on the recommendations of Sage Narada, Harishchandra began to worship lord Varuna for having a son, Varuna emerges and grants him the wish to have a son but in exchange he will have to perform sacrifice rituals for him Harishchandra accepts Varuna's request.
From this boon Shaivya gives birth to a son call Rohitashva, after the birth of the child Varuna demands that the child be sacrificed to him as an offering, Harishchandra postpones the sacrifice several times citing several reasons.
When Rohitashva became an adult, Harishchandra agrees to give Rohitashva as a sacrifice to Varuna, but Rohitashva refuses to be sacrificed to Varuna, he fled from his father's kingdom to flee to the forest, Varuna angry and triggers a disease of stomach for Harishchandra.
Rohita comes to visit his father intermittently and on the good advice of Indra, he always refused to be sacrificed to Varuna.
During the sixth year of wandering in the forest, Rohita met a hungry Brahmin named Ajigarta Sauyavasi, a descendant of Angiras. Ajigarta had three sons. Rohita offered Ajigarta a hundred cows in exchange for one of his sons to be sacrificed to Varuna in his place. Ajigarta accepted the offer. He didn't want his eldest son sacrificed, and his wife didn't want their youngest son sacrificed. So, Shunahshepa - the second son - was chosen for the sacrifice. Rohita then gave a hundred cows to Ajigarta and took Shunahshepa and Ajigarta to the royal palace. [1] [2]
Varuna accepted the replacement on the basis that a Brahmin was a worthy substitute for a Kshatriya. King Harishchandra combined the sacrifice with his own Rajasuya ceremony. Four priests were called to conduct the sacrifice: Ayasya (the udgatr), Jamadagni (the adhvaryu), Vashistha (the brahmin) and Vishvamitra (the hotar). However, all of them refused to bind Shunahshepa to the sacrificial post. Ajigarta then offered to bind his son for another hundred cows. Rohita accepted the offer and Ajigarta tied Shunahshepa to the post. However, the priests refused to shoot him. Ajigarta then offered to sacrifice his own son in exchange for another hundred cows. The prince accepted his request. As Ajigarta prepared to kill his own son, Shunahshepa prayed to the Rigvedic deities. With his last hymn, which invoked Ushas (the dawn deity), his bonds were loosened and King Harishchandra was also cured of his illness.
Vishvamitra, one of the priests, offered to adopt Shunahshepa as his eldest son. Swearing at his own father Ajigarta as a Shudra, Shunahshepa agreed. Vishvamitra gave him the name Devarata ("deity-given"). Half of Vishvamitra's sons - the younger ones - accepted Devarata as their eldest brother. However, the elders refused to accept the adoption. Vishvamitra then cursed their offspring to be exiled from Aryavarta. According to the Aitareya Brahmana, the descendants of these 50 sons included the Andhras, Mutibas, Pulindas, Pundras, Shabaras and the various Dasyu tribes.
How a righteous person can even think that he has the right to sell his wife! this thinking makes u unjust and hypocrite.
*@Suman Shil* Excuse me, fool. You need to get your facts straight before commenting because King *_Harishchandra sold himself,_* not his wife according to the original story. Harishchandra was amazing king. Loving king. But he should have taken the curse instead of setting an example of selling his wife. Even though it was wife suggestion , he was no owner of her so he shouldn’t have done that

This is not OMG part 3 movie going on here. It's all about *Karma.* Secondly it's not meant to be a moral story, it's a tragic life story of Honest King Harishchandra.
Secondly, sure it shows the tyranny of Vishwamitra or the priestly class but that is what the story is trying to show the tyranny exactly. Raja harishchandra was a very just ruler. His wife herself chose to give herself away not that Harishchandra asked her to do so, and Harishchandra was doing his karma, he had to rectify his mistakes which he didn't even committed in the first place. It was a test going on of him by the almighty God how honest he is and whether he truly surrender himself and his ego to his creator almighty God or not. Similar to the story of *Abraham* and Allah.
And if we look at the bigger picture both him and his wife went to heaven because of their unconditional service to #Dharma, that means due to his good deeds both of their sins (interrupting the sage and selling his fam) were forgiven. His wife was forgiven too because obviously it wasn't her fault.
@@jaydutta7711 then before getting angry on me , start reporting this video first.

who gave the authority to vishvamitra to be a tester, did all sages roam around and test people by destroying their lives ? this is talking advantage of one's power as a brahman sage, if he was so wise he should have known what kind of a king harish was. There are several hot headed angry sages in the mythology that did not follow the path of dharma, and there are several devta's who fell to many vices such as lust and riches. it is important to understand that this explains that even devas and gods make mistakes and act under anger and ego. (remeber the time when indra went to shiva and shiva was disguised as a old man and did not answer indra when asked about shiva, then what did indra do ? hit him with lightning ? really ? that is what a all powerful all merciful all knowing god acts like ?)

Vishwamitra kuch jyada hi hogaya
What this story told us
It's a brahamanical theory and we can see how vishwamitra despite knowing it's was not his fault put him in his misery and took parts in slave trade or trade of humans how that can be forgiven
It put just one thing if you brahaman and any one offend you. You can curse him without any consequences.
Vishwamitra in name of testing him put him in great pain and suffering like selling his wife death of his son and distract him from his karma of being a dutiful king
Well first of all Vishwmitra was a Kshatriya by birth.
Secondly he gave Harishchandra his tapobal when Harishchandra proved himself
Thirdly if it wasn't for Vishwamitra no one would have know Harishchandra today. There are Hospitals and schools in his name
And this is just one version of the story there's whole another version.
Not only brahmans , any righteous person those days could curse anyone even the gods.
And cursing someone wasn't easy for a person , it needed some portion of good deeds the person had accumulated in his life .
You seem to be a brahmin hater. Brahmins chose prabhu Ram, a kshatriya over Ravan who was a brahmin by birth but Rakshasa by deeds. Brahmins accepted Shri Krishna who by birth a Kshatriya but grew up as a cow heard boy. Adi Shankara fell to the feet of a Chandala who tested Shankara's ego. In varnashram system explained by lord Krishna no one got the tag of 4 varnas just because they born with a certain family background. It was based on both Guna and Karma, and there is a story of Ajamila who had good qualities but how he became a shudra through his deeds. The bottom line is very clear, anyone can become a brahmin or kshatriya or vaishya or shudra through their deeds. The modern day caste system is a total failure which divides the society in the name of caste. I have seen many Brahmins who do all sort of illegal things wearing a sacred thread but still not ashamed to call themselves as Brahmins.

So at that time discussion about Harischandra's virtue and truthfullness began and Vishwamitra was not pleased about Harischandra's virtue and wanted to test Harishchandra. In my opinion it is not a moral that society should follow.
Oh please, ist an old story
Vishwamitra was a Kshatriya
Please don't continue your hatred against a particular community even here.
Haven't the Brahmins suffered enough already?
@@dv9239 You demonstrate quite amazing ignorance.
King Kaushik was a khastriya.
He was made to do years of yagna and tapasya to become a Brahmin.
Brahma then had to grant him Brahma rishi title and then he was renamed to Vishwamitra by Brahma.
So no Vishwamitra is not Khastriya.
Kaushik gotra Brahmins are considered high caste Brahmins today and they are supposed to be decendents to Vishwamitra.
Actually Vishmamitra is a King later left his kingdom and done penance and became a sage.
It is not about Brahmin wishes to be fulfilled but about the promise Harishchandra gave. Harishchandra would have done the same thing if it is any other person who belongs to other varna.
It is a terrible and dark story.
*@anukta chattopadhyay* Don't believe everything on the internet without cross checking the facts before passing your judgment. King *_Harishchandra sold himself,_* not his wife according to the true original story. It's not a movie, alot of things even grosser than this happening in the world and do GOD descend from the heavens all the time to help humans? The answer is NO...
@@jaydutta7711 I know the story. I read it when I was little in Stories from Puranas by Upendrakishore Roychowdhury. I always thought this to be a very dark story. I couldn’t even watch the full video as this is such a disturbing story.
Can he be really called a sage. He had no wisdom.😠

Okay So anything before about caste, Need to know, Vishwamitra was Khastriya by Birth, and then by work He became a Daku or Dacoit, Then later he became A Yogi and a Scholar Sage and hence a Brahmin,
So Caste isn't a issue here,
Also Most of these are illusion or Maya to test a King or a truthfulness of a worthy, As it states it was restored, So the whole suffering was not real, mental or pyscholgical you can say, The wife and kid in real doesn't suffer anything.
Can watch inception to understand better.. 😅
A sage curse a good king. What kind of sage is he? A king serve a sage afraid of sin & curse, whats about his responsibly to his wife & son? Pointless stories. Or stories to sell off everything to serve religious people. All the religion tell stories to frightened ppl about religion & religious leaders. Religion is less talk about good work more talk about to donate wealth to masjid mandir church. Ppls are fool.
What these stories represent aren’t religion but the truth of life. Nothing comes to u easy in life. Raja Harishchandra was put through such misery torment yet he didn’t commit one sin like robbery or any crime to repay his debt. His virtue and willingness to go the extra mile to right the wrong that he never did in the first place earned him his rightful place in heaven
They are not meant to represent religion but cruelty of people who feel entitled they can be religious or not. Selling wife is a sin which harishchandra had to commit bec of the sage it's a tragic story.

Harishchandra sacrificed his materialistic happiness and ego to his creator almighty God to achieve the Nirvana and Salvation from unstoppable death and birth cycle forever. Similar to the story of *Abraham* and Allah.
He did not sold his wife, he sold himself according to the original authentic story.
Haha ! Oh realy ?
Selling wife for saving self from a curse? So Harishchandra wasn't that good of a man either.
The curse would have affected the whole family, maybe that's why. This shows how the hindu society was absolutely petrified of the idea of making these sages angry.
