I only love and listen to classical music (Bach Rameau Mozart Rachmaninoff Brahms etc), I am a classical music junk, all my live, i am 57 years old, but sometimes I listen to Mark Knopfler with Emmylou Harris, great music and for me also classical music, this is like a modern opera. One of the things I love about Mark is that he performs music that is not only great, but it’s about real things.
Oh, he absolutely does write very topical songs, which is understandable because he taught journalism as well as working at it, before he had success with music!

One of my ancestors was 'Done with Bonaparte.' He fled France, deserting or avoiding Bonaparte's conscription, and traveled to Sweden.
And right he was !
A "Universal Soldier" who said, "I'm done" ! Wow what a proud legacy in your family ! If only more young men would all say "I'm Done" Then leaders would have to just 'duke it out' with their fists, and leave the rest of humanity alone. Peace !
When Mark and Emmylou sing together, it sounds like heaven.
What a sense of history Mark Knopfler has! He's written lyrics often about the tragedy of war.

That's one of the things that I love about him, telling these stories. Like his "Sailing to Philadelphia"! Tells a true story about US history that l never heard!
He taught journalism before he had success with his music, and that maybe explains why his songs tell us our stories. "Brothers ln Arms" is about the Falklands 'war'.

As a former French officer that got bitter about his government's policies, this song has always been talking directly to my feelings. It captures the horrors of war, the glory of the battles and the bitterness that this combination leads to. Soldiers some time realize that there's something fundamentally wicked in training so hard in discipline, honor, tradition, service and sacrifice to put what we are at the service of people who are the opposite of these values. Thanks Mark Knopfler for, in two words, underlying the beauty of France "the flower of the Aquitaine", the region I lived most of my life.
If we should change our national anthem, I believe "Done with Bonaparte" should be candidate, as a warning to all politicians, gurus, clergymen or any other kind of power thirsty tyrants that we are done with them.

How cool that Mark writes a song that is an Anti-War song about soldiers who suffeed about 200 years ago under Napoleon Bonaparte. It makes the message all the more universal, and that in war nothing ever seems to change. And here we are again in 2023 with all hell breaking loose. This song even more important today.

I have never served in the military, but grew up in a military family and have spent my life studying Napoleon and other great generals. This song never fails to bring me to tears. Just goes to show that War is not just hell on the killing fields, but in the hearts of those that served.

Yes , the "Little Big Man" committed horrors , as many other people with the sin of pride , but he is also the man who brought out his nation of the misery , straightened France as no one had ever done before by giving it laws that are still applied in all constitutions around the world. He was a genius in many ways. This is why he will always be a source of pride for my country and in the heart of every French person.
