I'm a huge StringJoy fan. I pretty much use their strings exclusively. So I'm not surprised to hear that they got this 'coated' thing right. Everything else I've tried from them has been superb. They're really nice folks as well (in terms of customer service, etc).

I just picked up a set of Stringjoy Orbiters (10-48) yesterday, and will install them today on my Walnut The STRAT. I’m a long-time user of Stringjoy Nickel Wrap, which I love. I tried the Pure Nickel Broadways, but they were too soft sounding. I don’t normally use coated strings, but decided to try the these. We’ll see. Thanks for your detailed review!

I like Elixir Nanowebs myself; I'm one of those people whose perspiration kills regular strings, though it doesn't happen as fast for me as some others who have commented! That said, I plan to try these - I like the "in-between" gauges Stringjoy offers and would be quite happy if they work well for me.

I wish Elixir made balanced sets like Stringjoy. I love SJ and understand the sheer slickness of them is a polarizing thing but for them it's a holy grail string. They sound great to me and my sliding and bending is effortless. Never found them to be dead or dull sounding. I think anyone that really plays the hell out of their guitar can appreciate the feel of Elixirs. If they do buy strings en masse from other manufacturers, I wonder if I could send them a huge order lot of SJ to coat for me. That would be amazing! Thanks for the informative video.

I have super sweaty hands when playing so coated is a must. I have been using mostly elixir for many years but always looking for improvements. Have daddario on a couple of guitars and they seem pretty comparable. Ive never had the elixir problems you described. I certainly dont rip on my strings with a metal pick though. I dont think being able to slide easier is bad; they dont feel slimy to me. Maybe its because my hands are so sweaty. Will give these a try. Thanks for the informative review.

My E-II arrow came with elixir strings, and I absolutely hated them. I've mostly used 9-42 D'addario or ernie ball for the last 20 years, but lately I've been really liking standard Fender 10-46s. Thinking about trying the bullet end strings in my strats, even though I know they're probably just a gimmick

I switched from 10-46 to the SJ balanced lights, which it sounds like you're using. For one, the G-16 string sounds less overpowering than the 17. Bending 6ths is a lot easier. I started using elixirs mainly because my hands sweat when I play and elixirs always seemed to last the longest. Over the years I found the optiweb were the better choice between the poly and nanoweb. They have a natural feel and they last a while. Just ordered a pair of the Orbiters to test them out. I tried a set of the non coated string joys before. They sounded good but they didn’t last as long as Elixirs. Hoping the orbiters will be my new favorite strings

Dylan, have you looked into and found out that the coding on the strings is going to break less at the bridge shuttle pieces I'm curious to know if the coating actually protects the strain from cutting into it from all the the nickel plated bridge saddle pieces are like rager ads micro pieces that are just cutting into the string so I'm not I'm worried if the codeine will protect that all the burrs that are from the nickel plated on the birds are cutting into the string so maybe the coating will help protect the strings maybe yeah have you looked into that hit me back up if you if you found the answer

In my place, Elixir optiweb costs three times than regular EB slinky. Optiweb is the only Elixir that I like. Even then, I decide not using them anymore because I prefer changing strings three times and get fresh string tone each time than using the same set of Elixir for the same amount of time. I'm a bedroom player with dry hand so I can do that.

I have extremely sweaty hands. Non coated strings are dead after an hour of play… not even joking. They may as well be made of rubber.
I just tried the orbiters, and they only lasted for about an hour. I assume it’s because the acidic sweat and dirt gets between the windings, making the coating useless. Elixr costs the whole string, which I know sounds counter productive, but with some kind of magic, they last me for a month or more!! I’ve tried other brands too.
I honestly wish I could actually play a “real string” lol

  • @lazyguy3555

I've tried the Signatures, the Broadways and the Orbiters. The Orbiters don't feel normal to me. I'm feeling a lot of friction when sliding up and down the wound strings. The Signature Balanced strings feel smoother. Both sound balanced. I think the Broadways are the most unbalanced sounding. There's a huge difference in sound between the wound and plain strings. I also tried a set of the Signatures with a wound G, but the G sounded dull compared to the other wound strings.

  •  Рік тому

As far as I know, there are two companies applying coating after wrapping: Elixirs (with patent) and Raw Dogs (Chinese company, so they doesn't care for patents). The main difference is, the micro filths from sweat or another dirt doesn't stay on Elixir type coated strings, while on EB, D'Addario, etc it goes between winding gaps. I've tried all of popular coated sets (while I have super sweaty hands, and regular strings don't last 3 days with me without rust showing up) and Elixirs are the only ones that lasts forever.
That's true, that they worn out with picking, everything does. When it's too much, you just change them.
You don't like slickness? Just get OptiWebs ;)

Sorry, wait, didn't catch it... is there a coating on the String Joy wrap wire? What is the coating made of?
Is that coating toxic, via skin contact, via mucus membrane, orally?
Is it more or less toxic than nickle?
I have that body khemestry, or maybe just skin chemistry, that eats metals (other than gold). I literally cannot wear any metal other than gold, I'll just eat it away, the metal will literally dissolve, and it'll turn my skin green, gray, blue depending. I looked at an old metal watch that I wore for a few years, the band was stainless steel which seems fine, but the watch body was brass, coated with a very thick layer of some type of metal, but my skin dissolved the thick coating metal, and the brass looked like bread, or swiss cheese, it was eaten away with semi-spherical voids in the metal, literally. I can't wear any jewelry actually, only silicone, gold, or stainless steel rings or watch bands... My skin is REACTIVE!
After 5-6 hours of playing regular Ernie Balls or NYXL's, my fretting hand finger tips, like all the way to the first knuckle (from the end of the finger!) is metallic... like not just grey, they're fully grey, but with a slight metallic sheen to them they're so metalified.
I can't imagine all that nickle being worked into my skin is any good for me. If I rub my eye, nose, ear... how much nickle is making it into my body? If I do this every day? If I eat something with my metal fingers?
If the outer wrapped wire is coated on the String Joys, does it prevent your fingers from going metallic? I'd really like to know, and know what the coating is made of, I'd hate to avoid one toxic heavy metal, and introduce another toxic plastic, or whatever it is that coats the String Joy!
