No physical ESC key = trash

    • @NickRichards
      @NickRichards Місяць тому +15

Seriously. You're not joking. Trash. Junk.
And it runs Windows which is a complete pain in the ass. Decades worth of crusty software systems, All catastrophically doing mysterious things, that's not user friendly. Mouse drivers that magically change underneath your feet so that it's slowing down the mouse, or requiring some kind of weird delay when you double-click. That's what my last Dell XPS did and that was just like 2 years ago.
Dell has to be joking. How am I going to find F4, for instance? What if I'm doing control F4? I'm going to have to look at it to find it.
What About touch typing? How am I going to find the keys if the seam between keys is thin?
NOTICE @1:39 when Max Tech reviewer says, "I need to mute this thing!" but he doesn't? He DOESN'T mute it because it's difficult. It's just difficult. He would have to squint his eyes and do some kind of function f key and look at the thing and then click it and then make sure that he actually muted it instead of unmuted it.
Windows plus this hardware equals trash.

yes the 14/16 XPS are bad. similar pricing or even higher than Macbook Pros, but:
    - Stupid capacitive function keys
    - Trackpad which you can‘t see
    - Design over function
    - No HDMI, no fullsize SD
    - Audio jack on wrong size
    - Stock LCD has low resolution
    - OLED has strong pwm
    - Worse speakers and mic
    - Inferior CPU and GPU power
    - Inferior performance per watt
    - Half the battery life
    - Much more fan noise
    - Worse resell value
    - Windows 11 (lol)

I personally think with developer support, a true touchbar which could be media controls in UA-cam, brushes / colour palette in Photoshop could have been amazing. The dell appears to be still F1 or function F1 and not a true programmable keyboard. Is that the case?

I switched to Mac M1 from Dell XPS... one thing that I can do on mac that I cannot do on XPS or any windows system is : Work on music (Digital Audio Workstation) software without an external soundcard or audio interface. Mac - fire up the software and work. Windows - pull out the audio interface, grab a set of headphones, fire up the software then work.

to be fair. many people can do with asio4all or even realtek asio (for integrated soundcards in some motherboards) and work with good latency. BUT, Windows still has to be optimized for audio work and ideally without internet connection (wifi off specially..). Whereas with MacOS it is more stable and better out of the box. Also the dac and line out I think is better in Macs than most integrated soundcards in laptops and desktops. The cheap alternative is a hackintosh (MacOS on regular hardware that is compatible) specially when you need large amounts of RAM and disk space. There are Mini PCs and Laptops that can be hackintoshed, as welll as full blown desktops and workstations one can build or buy. Also you can pay someone to install it or help you do it. For some, a dedicated Windows PC or Hackintosh without internet connection is best.

It is on Best Performance Mode on the Windows settings, and on Optimized in My Dell.
With all this, I get 3-4 hours from the Battery. I won't say shabby, but the fact that my M1 Pro 14' MBP lasts almost twice with the exact same settings [Brightness etc] with the exact same apps running is just insane, infuriating and mind-boggling to say the least.
That MacBook has a Mini-LED Display [as opposed to my XPS' UHD+ IPS Panel], a 120Hz Refresh Rate, not to mention [if I'm not wrong], the MBP has a higher screen brightness [idk if its 500 Nits or more].
With my XPS, I'm always worried about whether it has enough Battery or not.
When I'm in Office, the MacBook dudes carry around their MacBooks without a worry to meetings, round-tables/ discussion tables, cafes etc, as opposed to me, who has to make sure it has enough juice to last that small work chat over coffee with the co-worker/ senior etc.

I teach at a school (higher education) and I've begun to notice many of my fellow lecturers and professors switch to Mac from windows. What surprised me was that some of these professors teach IT/ Data/ AI (including deep learning) and I've never ever seen them use a Mac . One of them had the XPS model and sold it off after less than a month of using it (he bought the RTX4050 version because he wanted to do some development and machine learning). When I asked why the change, he mentioned how the MacOS reduced a lot of dependency issues and things were much much more streamlined then windows. There's also no point in a GPU enable laptop for AI as cloud computing services are more powerful and efficient.

I feel none of them are built to the quality of a MacBook and I also love the integration between all of my devices, and the OS is simply getting better over the years whereas windows is stagnating. I just wish there was a way to dualboot windows on the M chips but without using parallels or UTM. I daily an i9 12900k/32gb ddr5/3060ti on my windows PC but I also have a 2013 Mac Pro that msrped for $4000 over a decade ago and I got it for $160. • @fidelisitor8953

Because windows on ARM is still windows. Almost all PC games are on windows so windows on ARM (WoA) only needs some optimizations to make those games work unlike the macs where the games have to be wholly ported to the mac platform and then get optimized.
WoA was previously held back by the terrible performance of the ARM chips that went into WoA machines but now Qualcomm has solved that issue with the X Elite. Once people start buying more windows on arm devices and Qualcomm makes a more gaming focused ARM chip for gaming laptops, game studios will start porting their games to windows on arm meanwhile nobody's buying macs for gaming even as they're capable. The mac's terrible price to (GPU) performance compared to gaming laptops drive gamers away and their lack of support for standard APIs like vulkan drive game studios away.

Zenbook PROs: 14" OLED screen, one word, gorgeous (and color accurate), 16 GB RAM, 512 GB storage, latest Intel can compete with Apple silicon, CONs: battery life not as long as MB Air, screen a bit smaller, Win 11. But I still get 12 hours of light use (YT, browsing) So all day. Or I could have got a MB Air 15 for almost twice the price of the Zenbook for an IPS panel, 8 GB of RAM, 256 GB of storage, but it has MacOS and the battery would have lasted for 15 hrs instead of 12. Instead I bought another Zenbook 14 for a family member.... Was I wrong? :)

Long term, yes, short term, no. Take it from experience, those windows laptops degrade performance significantly faster over time. They come out of the box and they are amazing, and in a few years it’s overheated and slow. Macs are rarely very impressive at first glance, and you pay more, but in a decade it will probably still be good. So as long as you are fine with upgrading more often then it’s totally worth it to get the Zenbook. It’s always a trade off for everything in life.

Another Way to think about it, which might seem like bs, but I hope not:
How much money is your time worth? How many minutes or hours every week are you going to be spending just a little bit frustrated? Frustrated in a way that the Mac won't frustrate you.
It works both ways of course, if you're not used to Mac OS it can be frustrating. And it took me I think 2 weeks when I first got my Mac years ago to acclimate.
After that, I always thought Mac was more predictable than Windows so I could predict how much time I would have to spend doing things, whereas on Windows it was unpredictable.

@@NickRichards Yeah a big part of that is reliability. Windows forces updates that lock you out of your computer and wont even let you use it until they are done. Over and over for years and years. macOS never does this. And I once ran my MacBook Pro with zero resets, sleeping it when I was done, for a total of around 256 days according to the system settings report. No slowdowns, no overheating, and no updates. I just shook the mouse and got to work for almost a full year with zero problems or interruptions. That kind of maintenance free computing is worth every penny for something we all have to use daily now.

      @@ghost-user559 That's a great anecdote ghost user.
This is kind of a tangent .. some More expensive products, compared to their competitors, are not worth the expense. Mac computers seem to be worth the expense.
It has taken me a long time to accept, to trust really, that at least for the MacBooks, those things are a fantastic value when compared to say a Windows computer that's 2/3 the price. I've experienced the same thing that you have, just about ...not 200 and something days though, that is a lot.
If you're getting a PC that's 25% of the price .. you know kind of like a $400 laptop .. that runs Windows And all you're doing is not even really web browsing but maybe watching UA-cam or something, then that's a hard to beat value proposition. However for more complicated things, pulling a bunch of files together to do some bigger project, using one of those computers can be like building a Lego house if your fingers are made out of those tube noodles .. you know the ones that are like that 1/2 in. Ridiculously challenging to get anything done. Noodle hands.
