For me it starts with instinct. I could be fully dripped out in Rick but still be more comfortable in vintage that I’ve had for years. There’s things that we are drawn to intrinsically that come from our backgrounds and experiences, and like any art, the kind that we resonate with will always trump copying others. Once you’ve curated an idea, you can see what fits into it and what doesn’t. Lots of time and money wasted on pieces that were just for the brand that I’ve let go of. But finding what you resonate with always feels the most rewarding
Definitely! Instinct comes in to play for sure. I would say that in every art form though, we are constantly drawing inspiration from others or rejecting other art forms with our own. It is in our nature, but I think if we put our own spin on it and create something that is authentic to ourselves and our own identity it isn’t copying. I have also let go of so many pieces, but I think that’s part of the process though. Sometimes you’re drawn to things and want them to work, but you eventually let go because you feel it isn’t you.
