Dom completely agree with you the D300 is outstanding. It was my first "proper" DSLR. I still have it but use it less and less as I've gone full frame. But I am far too emotionally attached to my first love to let it go
I too picked up a d700 mint condition, & I have d300s, but I'm not selling mine. It's got approx 115,000 clicks still works like new. The d300s holds a special place with me, it's a part of me.
Own one and it is all round the best I have ever used. Love it once I got comfortable with it is like an extension of my hand its so natural. Bit heavy with the aux battery pack but worth it for the the slightly faster frame rate. Also you'd be amazed at what you can do with just 12.1 megapixels.
Hi Dom, It's good to see that you owned the D300. I have 2 of them at the moment. One of them is a bit older than the other. The one I use most has about 10K clicks on it whereas the other has about 8K clicks on it. The one with 8K I like most because the shutter is more silent than the 10K one. Still the 10K camera is the main one which I do most of my work with. I'm thinking of purchasing a FX camera, but these machines are more than twice as expensive as the D300's I have.
i use D700 but few days ago bought D300, in mint condition, with 7400 shutter actuation, for 180 USD! Its a great camera in any years who want to do photography...
Nice :) I just bought a 2'nd hand D300 body with only about 2500 shots on the clock (at 500£).. I have rather big hands and really enjoy the feel and grip of this camera-body (as compared to the small D40-90).. Also the image-quality is a big step forward for me, comming from a D50 !
HI! Obv.D 300 is a great tool for the newcomer in DLSR system, still I would also bother a D200 as a first try into digital imaging world.Tough, relyable and and pretty cheaper than the D300 here in Italy (in the range €.300,00-400,00) A prosumer camera a great value for money and imho a good choice for a beginner.
Thanks for that helpful link. I checked my D300 and it's at 129,646 shots. lol. WOOT. I wanna make it hit 1 million and send it to Nikon for their museum.
great, enthusiastic review here - my biggest concern is the low light, higher ISO performance… I was really hoping that this would be good for those dim reception halls but the sensor is too old for that kind of thing without flash? thanks Dom
Does it has a built in AF motor? And if it does, can it control focus on older non AF lenses, like the one mounted on your camera? What lens it that? Thank you
Hi Dom! I'm getting my first DSLR soon. I'm thinking about a D300 or maybe a D3200 or D5100. I'm really into nature and wildlife. What are your recommendations? I think a decent piece of a secondhand D300 is way better than a new D3200.
Hello, I would advice you to purchase the Nikon D300 (if you have not boughten your camera already) even though the other two have great megapixels compared to the nikon d300. I think that the fas frame rate and weather sealing is perfect for what you want.
Hi, I`m just thinking about to buy a D300 or a D7000. I`ve heard lot of good things and lot of bad things about them. Fist of all the D300 has problems in lowlight, no videomode, probably worse image quality BUT its about £150 pound cheaper. What do you think, does the D7000 worth that +£150?
Hello Dom! I have a quick question for you! I am about to upgrade from my old trusty D200 i was thinking to upgrade. Since the D300 is getting old and nicely priced 2nd hand (about 300€) i was thinking of getting one... i also consider the D7000! what do you recommend? thanks
firstly look at the d300s (as in the important part there is the "S") the body there is great compared to the d7000, depends if you are using it out side much. if you are just hoby photographing then get the d7000. which has also been up graded to the d7100. but for around $550 get the D7000 amzn.to/18B5DKE
You can upload a recent photo from your camera to this website and it sends back the shutter count. Google ..."myshuttercount" I don't know any other way. Please share if you know something else.
what would you choose between a nikon d2x (80k shots) and nikon d300 (34k shots) ?they are the same price in my country . And i dunno what to choose. i want one of these two and maybe later i'm gonna get an second camera as a d7100 or wait for the d400 . what do you think ? Please help :D
Hey, i actually did not get this camera after doing a ton of research.for the same reason you mentioned. It is getting down in age. I am saving up for better lenses for my current d5300, And then i will upgrade to a d7200, or d500 or if something better comes along in the time i am saving.(I do more wildlife photography). Thanks for the reply tho!.
I have just got a d300. I also have d90, 1d mk3, 7d, 6d. Used to own 40d, 550d, d7000, d700, d5500. Its better than all Nikons with the ISO in a very stupid place ( d3000, 5000, 7000 series dslr`s ) Its two main flaws is low light is poor and AF system has 15 good X points but the rest of the 51 are poor, slow and very poor in low light. The 7d AF points for comparison are all good and very fast. The 7d costs much more and has its own flaws though. The d7500 should be the one to get in the future because they put the ISO button in a good place finally and to me at least that matters. I have 3 Canons I can change shutter, aperture and ISO one handed and the only Nikons I like have the ISO button like the d300 or the latest placement like the d7500 or d500
I believe it's due to the fact that they realized that the Nikon D300(s) is the professional level camera for the crop sensor! I have a couple cameras and this one is for sure next on my list!
Taylor Duong Also i think the d300's replacement from nikon isn't very popular because it doesn't have a waterproof magnesium frame soooo vastly less durable for shooting outdoors and whatnot. That's what i heard anyhow. Unfortunately I no longer have this camera as it was a gift to my fiance who subsequently dumped me and married my best friend.
Can u plzz help me out i have to make a choice between 2 camera's Nikon D300 used for $230 , used for few months and Canon T1i with 50-250mm additional lens for $250 and used for 1 and a half year. which one should i take because i really lack info in it
HELP! I have a Nikon D300. Can anyone help me set up my D300 as a webcam on a Mac so I can use it with Zoom.us ? I have a Mac Pro 2009, I’m running El Capitan.
Hi, about checking your shutter count in Nikon cameras You can check it by uploading jpg file on this website. nikonshuttercount . com/ Detailed instructions are available on website itself.
I bought a lovely 2nd hand one on the strength of this video - am not disappointed! Thanks Dom.
I have one coming next week, my first one and I’m excited to see where it takes me

I have used it in the past as a back up at a wedding, but deffo noticed the iso noise when shooting indoors
i use D700 but few days ago bought D300, in mint condition, with 7400 shutter actuation, for 180 USD! Its a great camera in any years who want to do photography...
Got my D300 second-hand a year and a half ago. Best purchase I ever made.
wouldnt bother with the d90 that was discontinued years ago now, go for the d300s, that is a very worthy upgrade
Nice :)

The D90 is discontinued? Here in the U.S. they still sell it on Nikon's website.

I've used the D300 for a long time..loved it!!! On FX now, but i still think D300 is a good camera.
Im really thinking about getting this camera
Cheers for the response. Does the D300s add much to the D300 (as it seems to be double the price)?
Do you still recommend @2018 for the price of 300 with 2 lenses
great, enthusiastic review here - my biggest concern is the low light, higher ISO performance… I was really hoping that this would be good for those dim reception halls but the sensor is too old for that kind of thing without flash? thanks Dom

it may still be on sale but it is not still in production
Great T Shirt - where did you get it?
Good series of videos
Thanks for posting.
My D300 has only 30k on the shutter and i'll keep it as a second body just because it such a sweet spot camera for the money.
the sensor is the same but the body, frame rate, and buttons are different
if video is important to you then yes deffo go for the d7000
Thinking of getting a D300 or maybe a D90 to move up from my D3100. Would you recommend this?
selling your 105 macro and now the nikon d300? what're you saving up for Dom?
would you recommend this as my first DSLR? (dont try to say the beginner dslrs are much better :D I dont like them because they are so small )
does it do well as a wedding camera ? cause I am thinking about getting one as my back up/ second body for shooting weddings. thanks =D
its an old school 20mm f2.8 ais lens, manual only but sexy as hell!
Yes it does have 51 focus points.
it adds video and really should not be double the price, more like an extra 50pounds
Hi Dom!

I'm really into nature and wildlife.
What are your recommendations?
I think a decent piece of a secondhand D300 is way better than a new D3200.
either of those cameras will be fine, but what you want is a big ass lens, like a 70-200.

150,000 is not the limit of the camera only the shutter, which can be replaced for something like $150. cheers.

Same question. Hope you can help us.

The insane thing is that I got a d300 brand new for less than $300 and then the price for some reason skyrocketed.
