    Hi Marcus. Just a follow up from our chat in SpeakEV can you please check that if you de-select Eco-Assistance it remains de-selected even if the car is switched off and then on again. And then the car doesn't amend regen levels in Mode D again unless you re-select that feature.

    Hi Marcus, good to see you’re happy with the car. :)
    When you come to a stop in ACC I think you can just press the RES (resume) button on the steering wheel to start again. Same when ACC is disabled because you used the brake - just press RES.
    I have a Max so perhaps the behaviour may differ as it has stop and go, traffic jam assist.

    Nice deep information about driving systems in ID.3 you hardly see anywhere else.
    The indicated regen is always proportional to the driving speed?
    E.g. -91 kWh / 100 km as indicated in the display at 13:08 would be about -32 kW at 35 km/h?

      I think not, depends on the situation. Btw; If you see the green bar underneath the speedometer, you see that it’s at about 75% of max regen at that point.

    I wonder what of those features are standard in the very base model? ACC is probably not, but what about those features you showed in D and B mode, e.g. the sign recognition, lane assist, automatic break, etc?

      I do not know what the base model ID.3 will come with, but I think front assist etc will be standard because this is a safety feature. I am driving the base model ID.3 1st.

    Nice to see that you finally got your car and you're happy with it Marcus! I've now driven my ID 3 Max for 2500 km, and can comment on the Travel assist. It works well, I can drive very long distances without steering or touching the pedals. I only have to keep one hand on the steering wheel without any movement. Only glitch is with the speed limit recognition. I had to turn automatic speed limit recognition off because when driving on motorway it recognizes limit signs from junctions (not nice to have a quick braking from 120 -> 60 km/h... 😊).

      @@domingosmoreira well I think it is hard to create software that can distinguish road signs 100 % accurately. What I hear is that Tesla is no better in this.

      @@jannev3354 I can understand that the software goes somewhere take the info and put it in the car system. I'm quite sure the error is the same to all vehicules and GPS apps that use that portion of information. Maybe because someone put it in the system for road maintenance, for instance, and then forgets to take it off. And then all users of that info read and react.

    With ACC on driving at the front of the traffic, can I assume the id3 would detect a red traffic light at a junction and stop, and then start again when green,,?

      It currently does not seem to detect red traffic lights but it does slow down at junctions.

    When it comes to regenerative breaking I have heard that you get additional regeneration into the battery when you apply the break pedal. Is this true?

      The first maintenance will be in September 2022, it has no limit on kilometres. I have no idea what the cost will be.

    ACC automatically accelerates again after a complete stop, but only for a limited period of time. Then, you have to push the accelerator again.

    Myth: Germans cannot do software - what about SAP?
    But a good overview and comparison of ACC, and D & B modes. I have found that the speed sign recognition can be confused with temporary speed sign at road works. In the UK we have to be especially careful with speed limits in road works on motorways - there are average speed cameras. The system works by using both sign recognition and the data in the SatNav database. There are a few places I have found locally where neither is quite up to date.
    By the way your "lanes" are still quite wide and sweeping compared to mine.

    I understand that some things that used to be in Autopilot, snd which should be in Autopilot,have been moved to Full Self Driving. Which costs 000s more.

      I just have the standard LED lights, not IQ Matrix. The standard LED lights are wonderful, very bright and very white. They are better than any other lights I have had on any other car previously.

    The car will increase or decrease the regen on D automatically, depending on the caution gradient of the road...

      Yes, as you can see in the video regen was working but it was very weak going down quite a steep hill. The car kept increasing speed. In "B" mode for example going downhill the regen would have been much stronger. Perhaps they will change this in the next software update.

      I seem to remember that the ID.3’s system reacts to road signs, which may correspond to the ‘caution gradient’ you’ve mentioned, vhog666.

    Thx for the D mode downhill test! 🤗 So B mode it's the perfect one for downhill situations. We do have loads of downhill zones in Portugal :)

      Yes, there are lots of downhills to enjoy in Portugal. VW recommends that you should use "B" mode when you go downhill.

      @@marcusevjourney566 Can you please check if there are any regen levels on ID3? It looks strange that on "B" mode only 1 regen level...Kia e-niro and others, have at least 4 or more (1, 2, 3, auto). Thx! Awesome car!!! :) (Edit: "Google" says that there are additional settings for regen...)

      @@iHugoF There are only D and B, and there may be slight differences between Sport, Comfort and Eco mode but not that you would notice. Sport even in D mode is like B mode.

      @@iHugoF If you do not have the hold function on and you are stopped, when you move your foot off the brake the car will creep forward. With the hold turned on, when you lift your foot off the brake the car will stay in the same place. I always have the hold on.

    Hi Marcus,
    My son and i drove the Id3 Max for the first time today. The driving experience is amazing , especially the B mode in the city.
    Even eco mode is quite fast enuff to drive around.
    The only thing i Was not so happy was those 20 inch wheels . Guess 18 or 19 inch tyres arent worster.

      I have had no problems with my 18-inch wheels. Eco mode is much more responsive than any petrol car I have owned 🤣

      They are all good cars and are all different, a hatchback, salon and estate. They should try all 3 and get the one they prefer.

      @@marcusevjourney566 They really liked the Model 3, only really concerned about reliability and quality control.
      Tried the ID3. Not really sold on the looks and the cheap scratchy interior was the biggest problem. Rest was fine.
      The Skoda is not available for test drives yet but my guess is that they will say it's too slow. 😂

    Hereabouts “normal roads” are very bendy and steeply inclined ;-)
    Hence I’d probably be using B mode most of the time and D when I’m going farther away. Thanks for your review!

    Thanks for all your good reports regarding this amazing car, it helped me a lot. Just received the ID3 1st plus and can only confirm you findings. The car seems to know every crossing, corner and sharp curve, so it adapts speed en re-gens. I need to test a bit more, but am already very pleased with this system. Today I learned how to best drive with B mode without touching the brake pedal within city limits and a lot of traffic light stops. That worked very well. If you don't release the gas pedal too late or too soon, it nicely slows down to almost a full stop. And often, because you approach lights slowly due to regeneration, it goes green again, so you don't even need to brake. That saves a lot of energy. And yes, you have to adapt your driving behavior a bit. Only a consumption of 12.9 kWh for a 35 km drive. Not bad at all. Will do some longer range tests in rural areas in D mode.

      Yes, all EVs show the brake lights when Regen is slowing the car down. This is part of EU law.

    Wow unexpected Marcus. I am aware that the ID.3 (in common with most cars) display a speed slightly higher than actual eg displays 50mph while actually doing 47mph. Other than manual intervention can this be accommodated for in the settings. Also can the system turn off the speed limit sign if need be. In my test drive I had many wrong speed limit sights displayed.

      Yes you can turn off speed limit sign recognition. I do not think you can adjust settings for mph accuracy, but I am not 100% sure.

      You can oversteer the sign recognition with the plus button.
      Especially in travel assit (Max version) on autobahn you speed up slightly with the plus button in order to follow the traffic

    Totally agree with you. I've never driven a car with a more comprehensive driving system like the ID3 Max travel assist (even in ID3 first+plus the ACC+Lane Assist.+drive Assist). Tesla Model S Autopilot 2018, is nervous, unreliable on every big corner, with rain and with lots of traffic.

      It is great you are enjoying travel assist, it sounds fantastic :-). It was incredibly stressful for me driving the Tesla with Autopilot turned on, the ID.3 however is just completely relaxing in comparison.

    I don't get it. My tesla does all of this when in ACC mode except all the messages. Is it really that important that the car tells you what it is doing? It's pretty obvious most of the time. If it slows down before a bend then it's probably because of the bend.
    I do like your enthusiasm though and will subscribe. The id.3 looks like a good choice if you prefer a more traditional car to the model 3 with its quirky center screen and silly doorhandles.

    I made 2000km with ID.3 already, I think that ID.3 "travel assist" is worse than typical cruise control in VW Golf 7. It's just too agressive and very dangerous in bad weather.

      @PolishYourCar Can you adjust it in some way? In the Audi e-tron you have three settings for ACC. It could also change behavior in the different driving modes, if you eg. use Sport mode.. Try Comfort, Eco or Individual. In the Audi, in a separate menu, you can also adjust how early you want the the auto steer to work. Again, three levels.

      Perhaps you can watch the video and timestamp it. Anyway to sum up for you, AutoPilot is extremely stressful because it does not give you clear information. The VW ID.3 gives you better information and therefore is much less stressful to use.

    I'm a bit worried about the automatic slowdown when ACC is on and a speed limit sign is detected. Here in Greece we have unreasonably low speed limits that most people don't follow, it's normal to drive +20km/h from what the signs show.
    Would I had to disable ACC in that case or is there a solution? Like disabling the sign recognision or setting a manual speed limit that is only overiden when there's a car in front of me.

      You can turn the sign recognition off and in ACC you can set the speed to what you want.

    If you are on ACC and a Rabbit or Dog runs across the road. Will the ACC come to a stop . Or would you take over the control of the car

      The ID.3 has front assist which should stop you hitting pedestrians, cyclists and other cars. I am not sure if it works for dogs or rabbits.
      These systems are never 100% accurate and it is the responsibility of the driver to press the brake pedal when necessary. When you press the brake or accelerator then that automatically overrides ACC.

    The problem with your argument is that all Teslas come with TACC and Autopilot. If you don't like Autopilot just use TACC and obviously, EAP and FSD are optional for Teslas.

      I did not like TAA on the Tesla either, the problem for me is not necessary the systems but the way the Tesla systems interact with the driver. FSD, full self driving does not currently exist in any car. FSD name is misleading.

    Anyway keep it up. I learned from you the importance of D and B. My dealer told me when I got the car "just use B only it's the best". Now i use both based on the road layout.
    Fyi: on the highway in the Netherlands automatic speed adjust is utterly sh.... On roads where you are allowed 100 it speeds up to 130. And on roads where you are allowed 80 it detects 30 etc. Hope they can fix that with an update

      Perhaps you should get your dealer to watch my videos about D mode 🤣. It is a pity automatic speed adjustment in the Netherlands is so bad, on the roads I have been on so far in Portugal it has been good.

    Your mistaken, your wanting to compare your ID.3 against the Tesla TACC (traffic aware cruse control) not auto pilot, that is something completely different. Also out of interest what version of autopilot are you referring to? AP1 maybe (which was very nice version to use btw)

    Great rant in the intro! 😆 So true though.. I love EVs and of course I love Tesla, but I’m so sick of the cult, the echo chamber surrounding the company on the internet. I used to own a Model S, the Autopilot worked great, but personally I prefer a good lane assist like Volvo, Audi and others have, probably something like the ID.3 travel assist. Only tried the Plus shortly, not the Max. The thing is that you should be able to guide the car without cancelling the system. On a Tesla it’s ON/OFF, but you shouldn’t let go of the steering wheel or take the eyes off the road, while some of the others actually make you a better driver.

    Please verify one thing that no one is talking about: In B Mode, the back break lights will light, to advise the rear drivers. So, do not use it permanently!

      This is the law and happens in all EVs. When an EV is performing regeneration, the car is slowing down quicker than if it was coasting, so the break light is shown to warn the other drivers. Why wouldn't you use it permanently?

      @@marcusevjourney566 Anyway, dear Marcus, in fact, the VW ID.3 is a very good car. I drove one VW E-Golf for a couple of years and, besides being a very good peace of car, the ID.3 experience is much more compact and smooth one. It is, indeed, a very good car! I'm really happy I bought one. And, by the way, I watched your videos to help me on the decision.
      (P.S.: And I'm glad to recognize the roads of this marvellous country we're living in! You should come to the northern part of the country. I feel you don't know what you're missing!)

    On a Tesla you don't have to turn the wheel, just click on a button or adjust music volume or max speed using rotary knobs on the wheel and warning goes away.. So you don't have to turn the wheel..

      @@marcusevjourney566 How does it sense? Before it was really hard to apply enough torque for it to sense, until you get used to rest your hand, now you just change speed or volume or follow distance and it goes away.. How does VW react when other cars cut in? Bikers etc?

      @@teslascoop2177 I do not know how it senses, but you only need a slight touch. You do not have to hold it firmly. Generally when bikers or cars cut in, the ID.3 applies the breaks it has radar and cameras.

Tesla AP originally didn't handle it well, not it drives very nicely with all kinds of problems on the road and when markings are unavailable.. In terms of touch, it might be Euro difference in US you do apply a slight force (can't really call it a touch) to the wheel but much less that what is required to turn it, more like holding it with one finger slightly.. is this not how it is set on Euro Teslas?

    Thanks Marcus for a very informative video. I’ve watched another video that demonstrated Travel Assist on the ID.3 1st Max. On the face of it, the standard system you demonstrated seems to do exactly what Travel Assist (and Traffic Jam Assist) does. Any idea what the actual difference is?

      I think Travel Assist is much more advanced and will steer the car for you.

      Yes brake lights are activated, all EVs do that it is part of EU law.

    Very informative Marcus. There does seem a lag from recognising a new speed zone and slowing down. In the UK I've seen police speed traps within 200m of a 50kph zone**. Would the ID.3 slow down in time from say 96kph? A driver without assist will see the signs ahead and start braking before reaching the signs. In Germany & Sweden I noticed it was common to see a speed camera just inside a zone.
    ** I know 2 particular locations where the 50kpm zones are at the foot of long steep descents. I expect the regular police speed checks at these points bring in more revenue per hour that the cost of their salary & the vehicle!

      It seems to slow down just at the sign to the correct speed, but it does not do that always so you have to take control sometimes.

    I agree again when it comes to B mode. In the end it depends on the kind of roads you're driving on and your personal preferences.
    The Travel Assist seems to be working quite perfectly. I can't wait to get my ID.3!
    BTW: Are you British or how did you get this nice British accent?

      @@uwemuller2944 I am from Oxfordshire in England, but I have not lived there for more than 24 years. I think my accent has changed overtime, so it is no longer very British. My Sister keeps telling me my English is getting worse :-). I have been in Portugal for more than 20 years and decided to move to Portugal because I had a choice of London, Paris or Portugal and I am country boy at heart not a city dweller :-)

    I have Travel Assist and I love it. Capacitive steering wheel is nice and so is breaking for curves, roundabouts and turns - although it will often accelerate, while still in the roundabout.
    However, Traffic Sign Recognition often makes mistakes - I think GPS data overrules traffic sign information and it has a nasty tendency to read signs on off ramps even though I am not getting off resulting in the breaks being slammed.
    Based on the few times I have tried Tesla AutoPilot I will say that Teslas system has much better lane centering especially on curves.

    If when in D and you press the brake it regens then that is perfect for me. You will be controlling the amount of regen yourself instead of a fixed regen level when in B.

    Hi Marcus, great review, thanks. There is one aspect of the ID3 that I am very interested in and I hope you would be interested to cover. The remote app and what it can or cannot do, e.g aircon, demist, summon, etc. and how well they work. Many people tell us about all the wonderful things you can do remotely with Tesla but non that I can find about the ID3. Many thanks.

    I wonder whether you have changed your mind on the intervention steering - i flippin' hate it on my ID3, i turn it off now when i remember when i get in the car because it doesn't automatically stay off...annoying - i would rather not have it try and cut corners that is quite dangerous, always unnerves me the system, can understand it for motorways where you might just want to chill away the miles while it does it's thing to keep you safe, on the open road though it's a hazard and far to forceful. ACC gen 2 is ace though, i loved it in my Mk7 Gti and it is a step up in this car with the speed limit detection - however it can switch to a higher speed when side road signs are visible, and doesn't read them if they are dirty....i live in the countryside...they are dirty!

      The car for me was the sweet spot on price, the ID.3 1st Plus and Max for me just seemed too expensive for the extras they offered. Fundamentally the 1st, 1st Plus and Max are the same car. The software in mine so far has been great, I have had to restart the info system 2 times because it went crazy. However apart from that it has worked fine and is just lacking some features that should come later. The driving assistance features are working much better than I could have expected.

    in B Mode, if there is no traffic ahead or traffic signs, you don't have the "One pedal Drive" feeling. TESLA Model 3 and BMW i3 has it , these cars come to a complete stop.

    I only tried the travel assist on a B8,5 passat and I was more than satisfied with the capabilities of it. It just made my trip feel effortless in a natural way. Earlier I had a blast with volvo's similar system. Having seen your video I just have a stronger and stronger feeling that tesla's bold "autopilot" name does not cover even the same set of functionality and ease of use however the name suggests it should to all and everything and beyond :D Elon's bullshittery at it finest...

      Elon has great vision, but his words are said years before it can be made into reality. The Autopilot name is very misleading, and I do not think anybody really knows if full autonomous driving is 2 or 40 years away. Elon admitted the other day that they had to rewrite their AI software because it got stuck in a local minima and therefore, they could not move forward. This is a frequent problem with AI networks.

      You really shouldn't base your opinion off one video where Tesla's autopilot is not shown... As clearly seen in your comment, this leads to serious factual inaccuracies. Tesla's base "autopilot" covers the same set of functionality in that it allows for adaptive cruise control and lane keep, and the main critique here is the ease of use and communication to the driver - and rightfully so. A driver should not have to battle the system for control. Other manufacturer's implementations of driver assist allow for cooperative driving, which is better for usability. Especially here since his criticism is feedback to the user - at least check out how Tesla's autopilot gives feedback, rather than relying on someone's recounting of it.
      However, on the point of reminding a driver to keep their hands on the wheel - that's a human-machine interface problem. Many people have no problem with that once they learn how to operate the system. To me that's like someone complaining about instant torque in an EV simply because they're used to the delay in an ICE car, and concludes that there are unintended accelerations in their new car.
      The term "autopilot" is really only misleading if you don't know what it is. What do you think "autopilot" in an aircraft does? It is a pilot-assist function and does not replace the pilot in any capacity what so ever. All it does is automate some functions to reduce the workload for a pilot. It is no different in a car...
      So I'm all for criticizing a system's shortcomings - as I have here - but it serves everyone better if it comes from a standpoint of fully understanding the system first...

      @@marcusevjourney566 To each their own. For me, I don't think "general public not understanding a word" is not a valid defense. I come from a scientific background and when a layperson complains about some scientific topic because they misunderstood the word, I wouldn't be criticizing the word choice - especially when it has a well-defined, scientific usage. Rather, I prefer better education in the general public. To me, the stance of "if you have to explain it to me then it's not clear enough" makes me feel like there are some strong anti-intellectual sentiments. I know that's not the case here at all but it certainly is triggering lol.

    I own both Tesla Model S 90D and ID.3 1st Max. Model S is a space shuttle ID.3 still feels like a regular car what actually most people want. Though I can't agree with all your comments about the Tesla autopilot. I feel very confident using it. Not sure why you didn't feel the same. I'm sorry to hear that.       On a 300km trip it slowed down 3 times where it shouldn´t have, there was no hard breaking. It misread traffic signs; it is easy to see when it will happen because it warns you before it does it so you can just accelerate out of it.
