  • Despite being one of the earlier Olympus Premium line lenses, the 75mm f1.8 remains one of the most popular portrait lenses for Micro 4/3 platform. Jimmy took it out with Charli for a shoot and demonstrate why it has achieved such a cult status.

    Dear Jimmy.
    I'm afraid I may be unsubscribing from your channel. Please don't take this the wrong way. Your content is excellent, your presentations are fun, and you provide both honest information and nice examples. Plus, Charli is absolutely charming, delightful, and beautiful. No, that's not the problem.
    The problem is that since I've been watching your channel, I've bought ANOTHER Olympus body, and as of yesterday, three additional lenses, the latest being a 12-40/2.8. But, this. This is what sold me on the 75/1.8. It's a beautiful lens. It's everything you said it is, and more. And, that's the problem. If I keep watching your videos, I'm likely to spend myself into the local spike. Do you think there's work for a poor photog in the workhouses? Can you live with that on your conscience?
    I'm a charitable chap, Jimmy. I'll give you one more chance before I pull the plug. Start doing boring reviews of dreadful equipment, accompanied by some mindless, slack jaw models to provide boring commentary, and we can remain virtual pals. I won't be tempted by any more kit, and can just watch your videos as my mind drifts slowly deeper into a uT00b induced oblivion. But, if you keep it up the way you're going...
    *sigh* For some reason, I find myself feeling pulled to shop for a Billingham bag. Dammit, Jimmy Cheng. Dammit.

      Hi Gregory,
      I must apologise for causing you such inconvenience and pain to your wallet but as an impartial photographer who only appreciates the best in business for what I do, I only want to share my views on what matter most for my profession. Olympus has produced some of the nice lenses that I've ever seen and I cameras that actually handles well in real life situations (and rugged), exactly what I need. Over the course of my career from a seasoned professional Canon and Leica photographer for the past decade, I can easily say that I am truly happy with my choice of using Olympus kits.
      However, I will respect your decision and many others have also mentioned about reviewing crappy lenses but to be frank, no matter what I review from Mr Olympus, it's going to be great and that's the truthful answer. I haven't tried them all but I am on a quest to so please bear with us for a little while until we complete our passion by completing a complete library of Olympus lenses.
      Once again my apology but soon we will start a series of videos showing how you can use all these lovely equipment to get some great shots!
      Warmest regards,
      Jimmy

      I truly hope you didn't take me seriously, Jimmy. I really like your channel, and your straight-forward approach to reviews. It's true that you're the reason I took the plunge with both the 75/1.8 and the 12-40/2.8, but I don't regret my decisions for a second. I was a dedicated Nikon guy forever, with a brief affair with Contax. The only Olympus stuff I'd used before were 35RCs and XAs, both really nice, small cameras. I switched to Olympus last year, starting with a Pen F, and have been over the moon with the cameras and the lenses, including the recently acquired EM5-Mk2. They handle like cameras should, deliver amazing results, and I can assemble a very complete kit in a small bag that weighs about the same as one of my old Nikon bodies and a single lens! My shoulder is much happier with me now. The only think I would hope for from Olympus is a couple of longer prime telephotos, but I suspect they may come along. (I've got 12, 17, 25, 45, 60, 75, 12-40, 40-150.)
      I have a couple of the cheaper Olympus "kit" lenses (14-42 and 40-150) as well, and though I don't use them much, I'm quite impressed that even THEY produce surprisingly good images, and I'd have no problems recommending them.
      Keep up the great videos, and sorry if there was any misunderstanding.

      no no no, I thought I would joke back, thus my serious tone.... hope it wasn't too serious! Your comment is very nice and funny, and we love it! There's no misunderstanding at all and thank you for your support (seriously!) After this, we hope to work harder to produce more fun videos on this magnificent platform. Cheers Gregory again and have a beautiful day! Jimmy

      I have to agree with Gregory, Jimmy you have caused me to buy way too much glass over the years and I’m eventually going to end up with this M. zuiko 75mm for portraits. That being said, thank you for your top notch recommendations and creative and fun video style, not to mention your great demeanor. Keep up the fantastic content.

    Good God, these shots are stunning, Jimmy. You sold me on this one before I finished the video. I've only just started doing some portrait photography and I get a buzz out of it, very different feeling to landscape which was 99% of what I've done before. Can't wait to try this out. All the best!

      I'm an actor (This is my private and real ID) and part time photo enthusiast. You are unafraid of the camera and that is essential. Turning it on in all weather and conditions - people think our job is glamorous. Ha! For the fortunate few that get to the top of the game, the lifestyle and money can certainly be glamorous, but the job is not. It's long, hard work and being "on" when they call "action" regardless of how one feels, or how difficult the environment is. 😊

    Love this lens! The sharpness and low CA give it that “pixie dust” look, and the build and size make it suit the EM1ii, EM5ii, and even the EM10ii perfectly. It goes along in my bag with my other pro primes as often as I can find a use for it. Charli-nice posing, even though you must have been freezing :)

    Thank's for the video.
    I bought this lens for my Panasonic GX8 and it fits great. A very good, small, light, discret and fast portrait lens.
    You may find better sharpness with FF lenses (for example the Zeiss 135 Batis), but it's much more expensive and heavy.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 років тому

      Thanks for watching Marc! Yes, this is a great little lens. Well, I guess sharpness is relative. Zeiss may have slightly higher resolving power but you are also looking at files that are 2-3 times higher pixel density and 4 times larger frame area, so perceive sharpness is higher. An ideal and fairer way to compare is to use have a 75mm on full frame then crop the centre section out and compare to this :)

      Agreed. Usually i use this lens for sweet 17th's beauty shot, which not in rush finding places and taking pictures. While the rest is on 12-40 PRO. Speak of great optical glass, this lens and 12mm F2 really fantastic besides the F1.2 PRO series.

    It's a travesty, beginner enthusiasts like me get influenced by some sources that present a narrative suiting just couple brands, hence focus on what their apsc ff manage. As I've began to follow more of photography online over the past year, I've landed on m43 topics/discussions/videos. I'm so amazed. I will absolutely love to buy on this system. In my country, even buying eos m100 took several months savings (it cost more then my monthly salary). Oly gear is a distant dream for now, a dream with em 5 3, wide prime, normal prime, 45mm and this 75mm.

    New subscriber here who just discovered your channel researching this lens. I hope you get to review the new Sigma 56mm f1.4 as I'm going to have a tough time choosing between these two. I can't afford both. :( And it's great to see a photographer and his model have relaxed and warm interaction w each other.

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  5 років тому

      Thanks Carl! There are some requests to review the Sigma lens so we will see what we can do :) But they can be very different due to the focal length, Olympus is a lot longer so it's a bit more restrictive when it comes to using it (space). But Olympus is also one of the sharpest M43 lenses ever tested and it shows. But Sigma also makes great lenses these days and I wouldn't doubt about the quality, the 56mm focal length may be more flexible.

    gorgeous images of Charlie, stunning lens, and certainly would be nice to have but maybe it is an awkward focal length, so the way forward would be the pro 45 although rather expensive, that said for most of us hobbiests the 45 1.8 still delivers beautiful images in good light

    Great video... This or the pana Leica 42.5 1.2 or Olympus 45 1.2?

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  6 років тому

      Tough choice, for me, it will be determined by what and where I am shooting. As a wedding and documentary photographer, I often get fairly close to my subject so 75mm is a little too long for my liking. I much prefer 45mm focal length or even 25mm 1.2 that I almost always use. Between 75mm and 42.5mm, they both have similar perceived 'sharpness' and both are very clinical and with ultra high resolving power. Olympus 45mm is more smooth when it comes to skins so, to me, I prefer that look.

    Thinking of buying this for low light speeches for wedding. We do have the 40-150 pro lense but it still dark sometimes. Will this make alot of difference? Or should we start lighting up our venues instead haha

    • @Red35Photography
      @Red35Photography  5 років тому +1

      Thanks for watching mate. Well, it will help drastically. 1.8 vs 2.8! You can lower your ISO by two stops with the same shutter speed. Ultimately, however, you will still need lights, so I often ask the venue to turn up the light just a tad before the speeches.

      Thanks Torsten, people always ask me why I never use lens hood, I do and I don't sometimes. I use it when I feel I want to have it cover, whether it's the rain or just prevent it from flare, however, there are times that I actually want to have flare on the image then I will not use the hood.

      Charli will be back slim doubt! With the lens, helio has a very different look, vintage rendering that also suits portrait well. The new lens is more clinical, sharper and less CA. I shoot with all kinds of lenses to achieve different look so I guess you can answer the question yourself by asking what look do you like more, vintage or modern :)

      Thanks mate. 75mm is quite long but it has the benefit of 1.8 aperture so great for indoor sports. Because it's a fixed focal length prime lens, you need to be sure about the distance. If not, 40-150mm 2.8 is also great or the panasonic 35-100 2.8

    I know this video is going on a year old, but I'm seriously getting tempted to grab this. I've followed you for a while now since I've been Olympus curious. But I'm still (don't hate me) a Panasonic user. For portraiture this should work just as effectively on the Panasonic system, right? Your opinion? I'm not shooting fast moving sports or anything and Lumix doesn't really have an equivelant, and who knows, this could finally be my gateway drug into Olympus. :) And the 150mm equivelant doesn't bother me. I have the 45 1.8 and this 75 1.8. the 75mm is a much better lens no question. That being said 75mm is not a easy focal lenght to play with trust me. It's often slighty too long.. You need to try that lens. The sigma 56f1.4 is not as long and have great shallow dof and bokeh. Between the 2 I would take the 45 f1.2.

    This lens is absolutely sharp and it has a perculiar characteristic shows in the photo it takes (hmm hard to describe) BUT one big issue is I find that wide opened the chromatic abberation is TERRIBLE.. When shooting against a bright background there is VERY SERIOUS purple fringing and even green fringing when shooting signboard with white light inside.. But i never see anyone complaining about this in any review (only one person had the same issue in an online article).. Dear Jimmy did you notice it on your lens too? Or its just my copy? Had to stop down to around f2.8 to make the purple fringing dissappear..very frustrated with it sometimes
