The solid water thingy is called "Oobleck". It's a non-newtonian liquid, meaning it's a liquid, but if you apply any force or pressure to it, it solidifies. When Alex was "walking" on it, he wasn't doing it correctly. First of all, you need more corn starch, you need to fill the whole pool with Oobleck. Second, you need to keep running or stomping your feet or jumping to not sink in the Oobleck. The reason it was stuck to his shoe was because he was standing still and it liquified so when he pulled his foot, it solidified and stuck to his shoe.
