How lucky the music lovers of Frankfurt to have such a wonderful orchestra with such a varied repertoire not based on the old staples of Mozart, Beethoven and schubert. The recordings are of such high quality too.

If I had to move one day I would not doubt to settle in this german place which is Frankfurt. This orchestra and all his soloist musicians (whom I have been lucky to watch these days of pandemic) surely would make happy my spirit attending every week to their concerts in such splendorous auditorium. I admire a lot their conductor Andrés Orozco-Estrada. Besides many excellent conductors are many times invited. I only need to practice my Deutsch.

I highly recommend listening to 4:55 at 1.25 speed - the tempo feels a bit more correct to a version I heard with Rostropovich or Rozhdestvensky conducting the actual opera (rather than the suite). It sounds so much more dramatic and - somehow - louder at this speed!

This is very active, raucous music which gave the FRSO a real workout. and I thought they and conductor Prieto rose to the occasion admirably. I can't imagine what is meant by "everyone is mistaken" and that the conductor "struggles to find a direction..." in two other comments here. It is only an arranged suite from the opera, and a very entertaining one; I have heard the complete opera and found it rough going, but mainly due to the story and libretto. I'd rather hear the music as presented here by this wonderful orchestra.

For the "Lady Machbeth ..." op.29 (1930-32) Shostakovich did not prepare a suite. Instead, he did it when he prepared a new version of the work by publishing it as "Katerina Izmajlova" Op.114 (1956-1963) where he also wrote new parts. This should be that suite.

We all are entitled to our individual opinions but for me this performance is very idiomatically Shostakovich ─ full of energy and bite with near virtuosic playing of a suite that reflects the nature of the opera rather well. A welcome addition to the canon of performances from this great orchestra.

When I compare the composers of the 1900's (ok, some may ask why), it is not hard to see who rises to the very top: Mahler, Schoenberg, Barber, Berg, Prokofiev (just makes it), but does Shosktakovich make this esteemed list? I would say no. His music sounds cheap, unnecessarily noisy, actually silly with no humor, and zero self-reflection. He seems to have nothing of value to say except maybe protesting against something vague. Sorry Shosty, but you really are in the minor composers league.

Hi Marisa. Music is highly subjective. I love Shostakovich but don't like Mahler, even though I know he's acknowledged to be one of the great composers. Shostakovich's 5th and 15th symphonies are my favorites and particularly played by this orchestra. It's true, in general, Shostakovich's music could not be described as cheerful but he did live under the dreadful Stalin regime and his music reflected that period. But I wouldn't categorize him as a minor composer.
