In honor of one of my favorite "fandoms," I've made a harp cover of "As the World Falls Down" from Labyrinth. In the movie, Jareth the Goblin King (David Bowie) sings this beautiful love song to Sarah (Jennifer Connelly).

This sounds very angelic and relaxing! Great performance! Is the harp a difficult instrument to play?
I cannot speak for this wondeful lady, for I do not play harp myself, but from what my Freind has told me (she played harp when she was a child) And she said it's actually not too hard, the strings just hurt your fingers a lot, like more than a guitar string would.

Hi there! Thank you so much for listening, and I'm so glad you enjoyed! -- I'd say it's roughly comparable to piano in difficulty. Harp is a little easier, in my opinion, but technique is super important because it's dealing with the tension of plucking the strings (whereas with piano, it's more distributed throughout the mechanisms and keys). I've had dedicated students reach basic proficiency in about a year!
Fascinating! I've never played a guitar, myself, so I have no basis for comparison! However, for most harpists, the strings don't hurt at all - they're actually quite soft and tender .... unless you play for a long time all of a sudden. Just like any sport requiring manual contact (holding a baseball bat, tennis racquet, etc), repetitive motion means that calluses will build up to toughen the skin. If I'm regularly practicing 4 hours a day, my hands are totally fine. If I go without practicing for two weeks and THEN do 4 hours in one day, yup, blister city. :-) I HAVE had guitarists pluck some strings (with permission!!), and they're astounded that the strings are as gentle as they are.
