On the one hand this might be because it was a period of strife and warfare, with all the burning and looting many documents went up in flames. But even the big players (Oda Nobunaga, HIdeyoshi, Tokugawa) have left a surprisingly small number of letters and documents for posterity, and lesser daimyo have left even less, making it hard for researchers to explain some of their actions and thinking. Historians are still not sure why this happened.
