I can see how the courtship would build anticipation and make the payoff more rewarding. If you're an aristocrat, you probably expect the most refined version of any experience, and you don't get that by hiring a random drug addict to service you in an alleyway.

Hi. Your resident translator/enjoyer of Classical Japanese literature here to point out that the custom of men leaving their lovers before sunrise had been a staple of Japanese romances for centuries by the Edo Period, and not only was a dude hanging around annoying for workers from a workload perspective, it was just extremely unromantic and lacking in any social grace or finer feeling.

It's funny how in many cultures third date is also considered a date from which an intimate relationship is possible. First date is to establish a connection in a neutral place, second date is to probably allowing to visit a house but not to stay, and third date is a more close, intimate date. I heard such stories from different countries.

Ive discussed this with my friends before, but easy sex is just not attractive, granted, alot of men wouldnt turn it down, but they also wouldnt return for more or at the very least seek a further relationship with the lady than filling a sexual desire. To be honest in the west that was popularized by Sex and the City which is kind of funny when you think about it. There are people who wait untill marriage as an excellent filter among other reasons, other people are sociosexualy unrestricted individuals(scientific term for a hoe) or somewhere in between. The third date thing is not a real thing in practice, like many unfalsifiable things that sociologists write on opinion articles, some people have sex more easily like after 3 dates if they like you, others value it more and so on, it depends on the person but generally speaking someone should not go on a third date expecting sex. lol

I'm not a historian but from the history books that I've read, the 1400 to 1600 is a period which surprisingly, kind of lacks documentation (primary sources). On the one hand this might be because it was a period of strife and warfare, with all the burning and looting many documents went up in flames. But even the big players (Oda Nobunaga, HIdeyoshi, Tokugawa) have left a surprisingly small number of letters and documents for posterity, and lesser daimyo have left even less, making it hard for researchers to explain some of their actions and thinking. Historians are still not sure why this happened.

Your interpretation of tipping customs in the US today are surprisingly generous. I consider 15% to be standard for normal (good) service, and if a meal at a restaurant had any type of insects, I certainly wouldn't tip at all, let alone 15%.

I think you misunderstood slightly the point of this video, these rules and rituals only applies when you want to sleep with high ranking courtesans which usually only celebs and government officials can afford. So for those big shots the more power play they have to go through makes it more exciting and feels more elite.
But for those common men just looking to get laid with common prostitute i think the rules back then are still pretty much the same as today. You get in, you choose your girl, book a room, do the deed, then get out.
