Boxing is simple, one discipline. MMA is complex, multiple disciplines. It requires more skill to try and master multiple disciplines than it does to master just one. Therefore there's more risk of losing. It's not so hard to understand.
Also, many mixed martial artists are masters in various specific fields anyway i.e. Olympians, black belts in various martial arts, champions in various disciplines. So MMA is more like being a jack of all trades as well as a master of one whereas a boxer is just a master of one.
At the elite level yes it requires more skill. You'll perfect one discipline sooner than perfecting multiple disciplines.
1. Boxing is one discipline. MMA is multiple disciplines.
2. Boxing is about _trying_ to perfect one discipline. MMA is about trying to perfect the culmination of multiple disciplines.
3. It is easier to perfect one discipline than it is to perfect the culmination of multiple disciplines.
4. It is easier to go on an unbroken record against fighters who specialize in only one discipline than it is to go on an unbroken record against fighters who specialize in various different disciplines.
Boxing has two weapons, MMA has eight. Do the maths.

Not only are most of them masters of a particular trade, they're also jacks of others while trying to master putting them all together. A boxer is just a master of one trade, that's it. Boxer: tries to master one trade.
MMA fighter: tries to master the culmination of several trades while sometimes already being a master of one.
