- From the opening of the last "Graham Kennedy Show", here's a young Daryl Somers performing a song, and basking in the reflected warmth of GK's greatness.
Graham was, in fact, a staunch supporter of Daryl's, but still takes the opportunity to slip in a neat "in-joke" at Daryl's expense - the reference to what Mr. Packer said to Daryl refers to Daryl's first meeting with Kerry Packer shortly before. Daryl had been in the GTV-9 canteen with Ernie Sigley, when Packer entered.
Legend has it that Daryl had been stalling over signing his new contract. Sigley introduced Daryl, along the lines of "Have you met Daryl Somers, Mr. Packer?".
Packer looked Daryl up and down and balefully said "You sign your f***ing contract or you're out, son" and walked off.
Hence Daryl's expression when GK brings the meeting up...
Incidentally, the full episode (and several others) are available on a DVD release from Umbrella Entertainment - pop along to their website!
Graham Kennedy had that edge to him. Something that you just don't see on tv any more.
Graham such a natural ad libber, improviser. And with a comedic twist always. A Treasure. With a rascal bent. Perfect.
7:14 'licking someone else's cone'.. the look on Daryl's face when Graham dropped that corker.
@@petesmitt . The Master showman. All what Channel 9 produced were great.
Packet of smokes on Grahams desk

A blast from the past , flares and a body shirt
Daryl played the part of the 'straight man' brilliantly (literally, here!). You can't have two comedians in the room together (even if one is an ostrich). Because he doesn't seek to polarise, no Australian variety performer has engendered such sincere public support as Daryl has for as long as he has.
Really? I respect your view, however Daryl Somers had a lot of "sincere' public, and entertainment industry critiics as well. He could be very difficult to work with.
@@125sloth I know a lighting guy who used to work in TV - he says Somers was a picnic compared to working with Kennedy, lol.
He is our gem
Bertocchi never made such a prize ham…..
I LOVE IT
Groovy man!!
Dazza is an Aussie legend.
Darryl summers grew into one of the most respected shows hosts and tv entertainers for over 50 years. Up there with the late legendary bert newton. RIP bert.
Bert is not a legend.. He's a scumbag that stole from people.. Owed millions. Yet, only paid cents in the dollar.. And I remember him saying to belvedere once.. "alright you've had your 15 minutes of fame. This is my show".. What a prick..
Bert newton nar ,
Stick it to him Gra Gra..so cheeky
old but goodie lucillegreen
What were we thinking in the seventies.
Now I can hear why he never made it as singer…..
As far as musical attributes go, Daryl's true _forte_ was on the drums, but in any case, I've found that his best TV work often occurs when he has the right people supporting him.
So super!! CLAPPN! !
I am watching this after taking a tab of LSD. I don’t think I will survive the experience
A packet of cigarettes and a gold lighter on the desk.
Wills Super Mild product placement.
Gra Gra's safari suit and Daryl's boar tusk necklace scream 1975
Graham Kennedy was an absolute legend. Daryl Somers a remarkable TV personality. Unfortunately the same can't be said about their fashions & seventies fashions in general. Just plain hideous. Some things deserve to remain forever in the past & seventies fashions is one of them.
Performed on red faces he wasn't as friendly when the cameras were off
Great memories
so many fashion crimes on display here
Why no variety shows anymore?
crazy trumper Isn’t it obvious?
No talent
His sort of tv persona went out of fashion about 20 years ago ….. utter ham
Because there’s no variety anymore. Everything is just vanilla these days, it’s a crying shame.
very interesting but GK....taking the mickey, double meanings all throughout..
Pink shirt
The Tony Bartuccio dancers?
Bert Shaw dancers
Was this entertaining in 1975? I guess Ossie was not just a prop, but a crutch.
They must have been desperate
It always amazed me how Daryl Somers got where he did - I think he was very overrated. Very ordinary personality and his success was due to those around him on his show.
He has an interesting personality, hard to strictly define but I think he's always tried to balance all the slapstick stuff with an effort to also play the more dignified host and get why it might have come across as a bit pompous sometimes. For the type of variety show Hey Hey was I think it made him a great fit though and he really was the glue that held the show together.
I don't think he'd claim the success of Hey Hey was anything less than from all the talent around him, most of his job was pretty much as a compère introducing guests and getting the audience excited about them and in a mood to just have some fun and on that measure of course he was a success. Looking at it objectively yes he was very much front and centre as host and it was certainly 'his' show but he was a consistently warm and welcoming host and most of the episodes were made up of him introducing acts/guests and giving them the spotlight with positivity and enthusiasm. The kind of atmosphere he created is what made the show so loved.
Hilarious. He could sing better in the early days
Omg how cringeworthy for Daryl.
