Angela, this is great story-telling. Loved it. I NEEDED to re-watch this to get back on track with the story I tell myself regarding the stuff I keep. Changing my story to one that helps me let go of the accumulations of "props" will help me a lot. Thank you, again.
Thanks for checking in and for sharing this. The stories we tell ourselves about our stuff may at one time made sense - but that doesn't mean the reasons we hung on to things are still true for us today. 🤗
You are so in touch with real people. Why we clean, why we don't clean, our crazy habits, etc. It is so freeing to be honest with ourselves, as painfulful as it may be sometimes. You certainly hit the nail on the head with your cake story. A page out of my life for sure. You are the best in so many ways!
When we were younger, my wife and I used to attend lots of rock shows, we were a lot into it. Once, we saw a terrible band, playing terrible but playing and I said: "if this guys can do it, so could I." Then, my lovely, lovely wife bought me one next X-mas. For us, back then, was big money. And it was so pretty. Well, sooner than later I realized I really did not like to play it. She tried too, with better results than mine, but not for long. Well, I carried that guitar the next 20 years around 8 moves, one of those, overseas. Because she gave it to me. And one one day, perhaps I will try again and it will please me and I will honour her gift. But the truth was, it sunk my heart everytime I did not know where to store it. So, in the last move, overseas, she said to me: " Im tired of the fight you have with the guitar. Its a burden. Yes, its beautiful, but I dont want to see it in our new home, and you never are going to play it and I DON'T CARE". And proceed to take it to a charity, happy and relieved. It made me think. How she is into the NOW and it is soo good. Sometimes we struggle way too much about objects and the expectations on people around us. Even, like in your story, nobody is pushing us. Strange, but true. Great vids, I really enjoy your talks!.
I LOVE your story and how you were trying to honor the gift by keeping it in spite of the fact that you weren't all that into it. Stuff is just stuff - and stuff comes and goes. The memories with your wife, the meals, the walks, the talks, the tears, and the laughter - that is what you both will remember. Honor that and you've honored her. 🙏 Thanks for watching and for your kind words. You just made my day.
Oh, boy… did this hit home just now. I have a generous collection of pretty white serving dishes, platters and bowls that I imagine I’ll surely need when hosting family dinners etc. The problem is, I’m not really willing to entertain. These events make me incredibly stressed because I am reclusive at heart. I keep collecting beautiful serving items and matching napkins for many seasons while imagining lovely spreads of food and cocktails. I think it’s more about impressing people and wanting people, as you said, to like me. My collection actually makes me feel guilty instead of “sparking joy“. I’m going to take a deeper dive into my decluttering process with your advice in mind. Hanging on to the fantasy of future parties is stupid. Thank you for being clear about the “why” we have stuff.
Hi Joanna, thanks for sharing this. I'm finding what really sparks joy for me at this stage of life is hanging on to the idea of entertaining with friends - but letting go of all the trinkets I've kept to do that. That's what restaurants with big meeting rooms are for. I found that by meeting friends at a restaurant - everybody gets to order what they want, drink what they want, pay for it themselves, they leave their own tips, the restaurant does all the room set up, cooking and dishes when the party is over. We show up, enjoy our friends, and it didn't cost two weeks of planning time, a week of clean up, and a thousand dollars in food and drinks or catering. BAM! Everyone wins! 👏👏👏
You have helped me greatly in decluttering some beautiful cake pans that I've not used in nearly 25 years. I'm going to get a box to donate them in. Thank you.
I'm so glad! They will go to a happy home and your home will be happy without having to store them. Thanks for watching and keeping me posted. I'm so proud of you. 👏👏👏
I like your cake story, Angela. I started figuring out things like this over the years. When you step back and put things in perspective/start looking at things another way, you realize that you are stressing yourself out by spending too much time and/or money unnecessarily. Things move quickly these days and it seems best to prioritize how we use our time. Many of us no longer have time for certain things and no longer need the tools to do them. Great video!
I really wish I’d figured this out in my 20’s instead of my 60’s🤦🏻♀️ As I’ve been decluttering (finally) I write an expiration date on project items I’m just not ready to give up on ,yet ,& it gives me an immediate reality check. Even as I write the date, I usually determine it’s not going to happen. At that point I can toss it or donate it .
Great video! Ran across this while looking for a bit of morning "sunshine". Now I can go start Christmas Breakfast. Hope you have a nice Christmas Sunday.
There are plenty of us who enjoy creating and giving without obligating the receiver, even when we have a full work schedule. Explains why some people really have a hard time accepting a gift. Maybe generational, regional or just too much Pinterest/tiktok. This premise of "wanting someone to like me" sounds like Jan from the Brady Bunch.
Thanks. It was a real eye opener for me. I'd spend days, weeks, maybe months drifting through scenarios similar to this. But once I became aware of what I was doing - and the reasons behind why, I changed many of my beliefs and behaviors.
Excellent video and perspective! I have a lot of "stories" I've told myself which has resulted in accumulating excess stuff that I will never use. If that "someday" I will use it or get back to it hasn't happened, it likely never will. Thanks for the encouraging words to let go of the story.
Great, informative and funny video as usual Angela. I learned so much and get so much positivity from you. I tried to comment because I know it helps more people Discover you and I think so many would benefit from seeing your videos. You are a true leader naturally.

Oh wow, that is so nice of you to say. Thank you for your kind words of encouragement and support and for spending a few minutes of your day here with me. I appreciate you. :-)
It was a lesson hard learned many years ago, where I realised I needed to sort my priorities out. I've spent time and money buying and making things for people who I then realised, didn't actually value those things as much as I felt they should. I also learned something else - that when you do something for someone else, it can actually become a burden (because they often feel obliged to repay the gift in whatever way, as the recipients of the golf cake did here). So now, I have a very very small list of people I prioritise. First on that list is my husband. If I should be making things, it should be for him first. Then my family (which is actually just mum and stepdad) and a very tiny few but much-loved and valued friends. One of them visited me recently with a box of gorgeous bought cakes. I loved them and cherished that she had bought them, I didn't want her slaving over a hot oven for me, I'd rather spend that time chatting with her. I realise it's not everyone's way but it works for me xxx
Thanks Leslie for your kind words of encouragement and support. And thank you for sharing this with me. I appreciate your feedback and I appreciate you. :-)
This cake story is amazing! Thanks for sharing. I also have my two musical instruments that I play once a year because 8 years ago I finished musical school cause my parents wanted me to. Now I'm an adult, I have a musical school degree, but I never play those instruments cause I think I feel resentment towards them cause I was forced to learn to play them for 5 years. Now I want to get rid of them, but what if I'd like to play them one day, like once a year at least? Seems like an excuse, but I really don't know what to do. Maybe I should stop making excuses and just get rid of them cause they always bring me back to those memories where my parents ignored my desire to stop going to musical school. I would like to know your opinion on this, Mrs. Angela Brown.
You don't need my opinion, it seems like you already know what to do with the instruments. And your cons outweigh your pros. Give it until the weekend and make a choice. You got this!

I have some news Angela. They are not going to like you more if you make the cake. If they do, it will be for only that moment or day. Ultimately it will not help you. So you did the right thing, my dear.🙏👏
Great story I’ve done similar things time and time again only to realize it would’ve cost me half the money if I had of just bought it. Love your videos. I’m trying to become an ex hoarder
Love your story about the cake decorating/cake making. I have 3 children and feel as though I went through a similar process. Before having children I had v little experience with either children or cakes. But I had this rose coloured view of everything such as how fun & easy it would be to make children’s bday cakes. Unfortunately my daughter ended up having multiple food allergies so it turned from fun/easy to a highly stressful ordeal trying to create a cake she could eat, that also looked good and other people would also enjoy. So I had to learn out to bake a cake without eggs, dairy & gf to start with - not easy to make one of those work well back then, and how to decorate it. I managed it because I am creative and a perfectionist but it took such a toll on my energy levels and sanity. Then my other two kids also needed cakes - and luckily my daughter grew out of some of her allergies so I ended up finding a recipe that they all liked. I’ve calculated I must have made that cake around 45 times over the last 11 years, when I also include the times I’ve made it for other family members. Once I was asked to make my nephews 10th bday cake which was for around 50 people and with a teenage ninja turtle theme. I ended up making & icing two - and yes they looked amazing. Other successes were a Blues Clues cake, Easter bunny, Tinkerbell, Yo Gabba gabba, Panda, Barbie Swimming Pool cake (the best), Adventure Time and Wreck-it Ralph. But after that many cakes I have to say I am pretty burnt out now when it comes to bday parties. I guess I proved to myself I could do it. But it sure was an eye opener as to how much work & prep can go into a good looking cake. I now have collected many of the tools and props needed to get really fancy with cake decorating - but do I want to use them? No.
Your cakes sound amazing. I do hope you got pictures of all those cakes. The memories of those cakes will live forever. And I completely understand how "burned out" you could be on making that many cakes. Until you've tried the cake thing, it's hard to know how much time (and expense) goes into making them. I'm sending you a big virtual hug. ❤
Oh Angela! I can 150% relate with you on this one!!! I can’t tell you how many times I have done something exactly like this! And yes I now have all these gizmos & gadgets I only used one time all because I wanted to do something “special” and perhaps stand out by doing so. But really, it’s always more of a headache when it comes down to it and most of the time my finished project doesn’t even look as good as that dang Pinterest post I saw! Ughh! 🤦♀️ So you are absolutely right. And truly no one really puts me ahead of their BFF list anyways so I really need to stop with the people pleasing. 😂 Great video, now if only I can determine what I should not keep. 🤔 I’ve noticed once I remove something I haven’t used I suddenly find myself thinking I need it later on.. snd say to myself “funny I just got rid of that a few weeks ago..” never ending battle!!
LOL. For me the question is not will I use it - but "Have I used it in the last _______________." Or "When was the last time I used this?" It's common for me to think "I have to keep that because I use it all the time, but really it's been six years since I used it last. WHAT? Six years, yes, it's time to let it go. I have a warped sense of value because I've taken such good care of the things I own and I see them all the time. Seeing them doesn't mean I use them.
I make homemade cakes for my church and family often but I don't decorate them all fancy I just make them delicious store bought cakes never taste good to me but you shouldn't do anything if your heart's not in it. And it does seem to take all day but I love it!
LOL. Thanks for your words of encouragement and support. It has helped me clarify the reasons WHY I do some of the things I do. I'm getting better at being aware. :-)
Oh, Suzanne, I went through the cutout cookie thing as well. Every Saturday at my house I had all the nieces and nephews over to make cookies and cupcakes and do arts and crafts. It gave their parents the day off and I was positioning myself to become the "favorite aunt." It all goes back to those crazy stories we tell ourselves. A favorite aunt or not, there comes a day in every kid's life where going to the aunt's house all day Saturday is replaced with hanging out with friends at the pool. They grew out of our Super Saturdays and I was left with GOBS of cookie stuff never to be used again. 😫
LOL 😂 Thank you for the kind words. We currently have a Hoarding World website up at hoardingworld.com. I'm working with my social media team to explore other platforms. Where else would you like to see us?
That whole story sounds crazy. Why would you go through all that just for a cake you could have bought for less money and time? That's just people pleasing and unnecessary. To me, this video seems to be addressing a completely different issue than hoarding. Hoarding is a mental health issues that is not based on logic, just like people pleasing is illogical and counterproductive. If only psychology issues were that easy to resolve by just explaining why they are illogical and people should think and behave diffently
I LOVE this story. I have a similar story regarding a pumpkin pie. Luckily I realized making pie just isn't my thing while I was still in the grocery store. I do have a wonderful vegan chocolate cake recipe. I make it for my own birthday-No fancy boxes, doilies, or cards needed. 💚
I love the part about the no card and doily. LOL. Thanks for sharing and yes, at pumpkin pie time - Costco sells a mean pumpkin pie (and pumpkin pie cheesecake.) LOL. 😂
Angela, when did you sneak into my kitchen cupboards? Yes, I have canning jars and all the equipment for making jams including the canning pot. But, honestly to my defense, I asked a neighbor just this week if she could use the canning pot. Now the jars are filling my cabinets. All this stuff is unnecessary now that I live in NC. The fruit is too expensive and there are no stands in this neighborhood to buy baskets of fruit. So, from "now to infinity", I will be buying my low sugar jam from Trader Joe's. Isn't that nice of him to do this for me? HeHe But I confess that it took me three years in this house to part with it. Luv ya,
Hooray for Trader Joes. And yes, you can get the jams, jellies, (and even the sugar-free bottled juices, I'm thinking cranberry,) there for less than you can make them. Welcome to NC. When I moved here, I gave up growing tomatoes for the same reason. I might eat one a week. And I'm not smart enough to grow tomatoes to produce only one ripe one per week. LOL. Out with the surplus.

And yes I now have all these gizmos & gadgets I only used one time all because I wanted to do something “special” and perhaps stand out by doing so. But really, it’s always more of a headache when it comes down to it and most of the time my finished project doesn’t even look as good as that dang Pinterest post I saw! Ughh! 🤦♀️
So you are absolutely right. And truly no one really puts me ahead of their BFF list anyways so I really need to stop with the people pleasing. 😂
Great video, now if only I can determine what I should not keep.
If you love it, then please continue doing it. I don't love it and was doing it for all the wrong reasons. Now I'm cake-free. LOL.
The Fly Lady says, You can’t organize clutter. For me it’s not about cleaning, it’s about the clutter.
What is the definition of clutter she is referring to?
Angela - Simplify! You don't like to bake! If that matters to others they are not worth even the crumbs.
LOL. Thanks for your words of encouragement and support. It has helped me clarify the reasons WHY I do some of the things I do. I'm getting better at being aware. :-)
I’m retired so I have plenty of time. I wouldn’t make the cake anyway😀
Hahaha....too funny! Good for you, enjoy your retirement!
Cut out cookies are my golf cake.
Will you marry me? Your advice is spot on for me. For those of us who don’t do Facebook, is Hoarding World on another platform?
Good points. Thanks for sharing.
Good point of view, I’m going to use it
I love the part about the no card and doily.
