People keep saying this doesn’t offer an upgrade path. Buy this and use it as your main camera and if/when you upgrade use your Mirrorless for your main and use this for top-down deskshots and stuff to add some interactivity to your streams. This is a brilliant looking camera.

    • @EposVox

I totally agree with that sentiment. It’s a perfect path to take with it.

This isn't an upgrade. This is just a different use for the FaceCam.

I could see a lot of scenes where this would be great to use and probably a lot easier to relocate than a DSLR.

    • @FlammableAirFreshener

I think it could be argued that for many the upgrade path value isn't value they will take advantage of, so spending a little less on something that can do a decent job VS a camera body/lens kit/ capture card wouldn't be the best selection for them anyways.
Anything that moves the market of webcams into a less logitech owned market is a good thing. The whole space has been hungry for competition for at least 5 years.

Ayyyy Andrew nice to see you here!! I'm so close to pulling the trigger on this, currently streaming with two Canon DSLRs and the combo of Canon EOS (which is limited to 540p) and using NDI (has such bad delay) is anything but smooth for stream, need a dedicated webcam software that doesn't interrupt the Canon. Plan to use this for the top down shots like you mention lol

One big problem is this doesn't have PAL framerates, people outside of the US are screwed if they are trying to mix footage from this in with their other cameras at the same time. I thought this could be my new face camera to go with my top-down camera but sadly it won't work

In terms of color accuracy, it seems the elgato wins. This is one of the most important things for me as I'm in the market for a color accurate webcam for my creation needs. Thanks brother, I appreciate this review. Perfect timing too as I was about to get the kiyo pro.

Great review! I come from a more traditional production space, so I wan't super impressed with this camera based on the announcement stream, but you did a great job articulating its use for streamers. Curious to see if this leads to more streamer focused cams.

Regarding the color issue with the shirt. Was your your hair at the time of recording a blue-cyan, or a blue-violet?
Comparing the color sample cards between cameras, it seems that the Red component of the Elgato is slightly weaker. It's simply less intense. Maybe this is something that can be adjusted for in settings? I'm not sure.
As I understand it, most common color digital cameras use an array of sensors that each may detect only one of Red, Green, or Blue light. Regardless of the video format being used to transmit from camera to wherever. So perhaps there is something slightly off with the Red sensors. Maybe the size of each sensor isn't *quite* as large as it should be. Or some subtle detail of density or packing threw the Red off. Or there's something not quite right with the circuitry and processors responsible for converting from RAW sensor data, to uncompressed YUV. It could even be an error with the coatings on the lenses, causing less Red light to make it to the sensor.
I'm no camera engineer, but I figure there's a lot of things that need to go right for a camera to be good.
From your review though, I think the Elgato got more things more right, in just the right way, to have a viable and competitive product. If I get the money after paying for a bunch of other things, I'll strongly consider the Elgato webcam. (It's pretty non-essential for me, but would still be nice to have.)

Hi. Would you now recommend this camera over the PW513? I am a disabled creator and I’m finally getting a new computer built within a week or so I picked up the PW513 because I need a camera that just stays on all the time so regular cameras don’t really work for me physically. I didn’t open it yet because there was no point until my computer was ready so I can still send it back and I’m just really torn now and I’m not sure what to do. I’m going to be recording video as well so that’s why I was leaning toward 4K but the quality on this even though it’s only 1080 60 it does look more slightly natural.

Dude did you upgrade the firmware on the Kiyo Pro as they claim to have fixed the autofocus issue. I upgraded mine and get nowhere near as much AF searching as you get there. Also dunno if this is new too but the Kiyo Pro saves settings to the camera as well, although their preset management needs to be a little better in Synapse.

The focus range is waaay too far and there is a wierd color saturation on pink/reds (lisp are way more red than in reality).

I think that flicker looks a little inconsistent unlike most flicker, so hopefully it's just something in the software that can be changed.
Otherwise I am convinced that this is well worth the price when you consider most mirrorless + cam link solutions are basically never below $400, and that this is basically the closest to mirrorless in a webcam you can get I think.
Not to mention, this is the first public iteration, so maybe we will see much better versions in the future, even possibly with 4K60 maybe?

I ordered myself 2 Facecams to replace my current ones. (Logitech C920 & C930e) As an Disclaimer: I had the Logitech Brio before, but I didn’t like the „beauty cam effect“ it had on me. That’s why I switched to the C920. Now, I was curious about using the Facecam.
After testing it for two days, I can definitely agree to the Reviews. This cam - while image noise is still there, due to a bigger, but still small sensor - lived up to my expectations.
That being said, I can confirm your experience of this cameras flickering issue. Luckily I can mask it with the right lighting choices, but still, I hope it can be fixed.

Bit misleading that they don't convert the aperture to full frame, only the focal length. Was surpriced to hear a F/2.4 having a fixed focal point. Don't know the sensor size so can't do my calculations, but f/2.4 (on full frame) gives about around 6cm (so around 2,5 inch I guess) of focus range.
Would be interested to see what the converted aperture is, because this is just misleading if they also don't mention real focal length and / or sensor size.
One of the first comments in Linus video was that they were disappointed in the bokeh for an 2.4 lens. And I think people will buy it with an expectation that they will get more background blur

ahh man, this ticks a good amount of boxes, only thing it really is missing is ability to set a focus. Having Locked to desk distance is all fine, but means you can never use it for distance shots if you were doing say a cooking stream or if you wanted to have your background in focus if you have guests on a sofa. What would of been smart was to add in physical wide focus ring to manually do focus with, or of course built in focus, and then you could have the benefit of linking that to Steamdesk to button press to go to a set focus range for Close up product reviews, and one for in chair streaming, and then one for background focus when with multiple people. Let's hope they come out with a Pro version that has benefit of focus and a nice Mic.

I have used 'DroidCam' for my Android phone the LG Stylo 6 smart phone. With the droidcam can I can select which camera in the rear I can use or switch to the front cam. For a microphone I use a lapel mic connected to the phone. I only stream online at Twitch for about 1 hour 1/2 and it works fine. I have my battery saver on in the phone settings and never had an issue. It works over Wifi but I did find if you have a older laptop and it has only a older wifi card then it won't work. The price kills it for me and I wonder just who exactly is the target audience. I would not recommend this camera to a beginner streamer who is still getting their feet wet. Someone who is established and making some decent money could use this as a side cam or whatnot like you mentioned but they're heavily marketing this as a main camera solution. Someone who has money to burn would also benefit more from a solid mic setup over this camera.

Lens size is proportional to sensor size, bigger sensor, bigger lens, more weight, bigger and more sturdy mount required, much higher cost. If you're going to do that, then why not make it self contained just like any mirrorless or DSLR camera that'll double as a webcam.

There’s no such thing for webcams. You’d need a whole computer (or raspberry pi) sitting between webcam and hdmi input to take the *already digital USB video* and output it back out to HDMI. Which would be completely pointless to just put it back in a capture card. Webcams have that built in lol

Does the Facecam's "uncompressed video" put a greater strain on bandwidth, compared to other webcams that use compression? Like, if you are in a group meeting where bandwidth might already be compromised or limited by the number of webcams in the meeting, or other factors. Just wondering if "uncompressed" is a "good" thing in all scenarios.

Also if you can pick up a second cheaper than a mirrorless it also still can be a great option. Or if you bought a new camera but you old one is still more than capable as a webcam.
As long if the autofocus works good enough (or you use manual focus). I don't see why you need an dslr should fail as a webcam.

I use to love Droidcam OBS (as opposed to standard droidcam). It's lightweight, it HAD pretty great clarity and color (a lot more accurate than epoc cam as far as I'm concerned), and it was totally fine other than having to setup my phone anytime I wanted to record or stream. But for some reason, it won't let me connect over USB anymore (hence the HAD great clarity). Now I'm trying to get into streaming and UA-cam again, and it will only let me connect over wifi.
At this point I might as well have a c920. At least that would stay setup and ready to go 24/7.

I am confused about the hype around this camera. It looks like overprocessed upscaled 480p...
To be more precise, the softness I see reaaally reminds me of how Canon used to make 1080p video in their DSLR's by pixelbinning (essentially only reading every 5 pixels or so) the sensor and taking that resulting image that was closer to 720p and upscaling it to 1080p before encoding it to h264. Yes, the 7D and the 5DMII was the start of the DSLR revolution for video, but they also had that very soft look. It kind of looked out of focus even when in focus. Especially when I got a GH4 and could source 4K and downres to 2K it was like when you need glasses and put them on for the first time. That's why I'm describing the FaceCam as upscaled 480p. Because outside the moire, it still feels like there should be WAAAAY more detail in the 1080p video stream.
I mean. I do like that they included the controls, but it doesn't really matter when it has less detailed image than my years old c920.
