I think it’s all a matter of the aesthetic. The Rasta way of life doesn’t put any emphasis on manicured, styled Locs. I find people outside that belief tend to want to find ways to preserve that “clean” look so the guidance typically lends itself towards straying from water. I think it’s cultural honestly but you’re absolutely right.

I've had my hair locked for almost 3 months now and, to be very honest, I didn't have the best start. 😅 My hair was relatively short so my hands were always in my hair. I was washing it every week in warm water, constantly trying to make it look neat, I was always checking to see if it'd "started locking" yet.😂 I was super impatient. When I had almost hit my 2 month mark I decided to leave my hair be. I would wash every two weeks and coming to the end of the two months, I used a crochet needle to "fix" it. It turned out great! My 3 month mark is in a few days and I'm super excited to see how much it's grown. @TP locks, you were my inspiration for this journey and your videos were/are super helpful! Thank you man. 😁
My loc appointment is tomorrow and I’m educating myself as much as I can. It’s annoying that people are so quick to bash because you’re keeping it real. When u have starter locs first thing ppl notice is your scalp. Healthy hair looks nice in any stage or hair style imo. Thanks ur really helping me on this journey tp locks
I think it’s a cultural thing tbh the minimum wash approach seems to be catered towards preserving the manicured look in between retwists. Most Locticians subscribe to that ideology. I find most rastas and individuals closely connected to those teachings have a completely different less restrictive approach! I try to understand them both!

Yeah I got that 4c. It definitely does take longer when you have longer hair. I grew my hair for a year before I got dreads. My hair started to loc in about 8 months.
Okay I actually understand watchu said bout my hair might take a lil longer to lock, cause of the length it all makes sense now !! I literally grew my hair out for a year before I started my loc journey now I know why thank you TP LOCS
Love your videos! Another factor in locs is also how you start them. I started in September on mid back, natural, 4a, b, c mix hair and did 2 strand twists instead of coils. With me working in management, I needed to have a way to wear a hairstyle (cause I was NOT about to wear a wig, weave, etc over my developing locs) while my locs formed. I knew coils would unravel easily, especially with how long my hair was. By time we finished twisting it, those bad boys shrunk to my ears. But the funny thing is my hair loc'd SUPER quick. It's hard to even find a loc that you can really see the 2 strand twist pattern. I had about 3 twists that kept unraveling in the middle at the beginning that my loctician eventually just did a quick crochet on, and they look just like the rest of my locs. Wish I had done this sooner and can't wait to see my hair when it reaches a year 3 months from now!
Thanks for the insight on this! I completely failed to include the way locking plays a role! You got me wanting to get some crochet work done. I got a few I want to repair!!! Thanks for sharing!

I’ve noticed so many UA-camrs do not know the difference between a hair strand and a hair follicle. The follicule is embedded in the dermis; sub-level of the skin. Hair emerges from it. It is not synonymous with hair strand.
I’m definitely not above those typical errors! Especially as a UA-cam who will let it be known! I’m not the expert! Just a guy with locs trying to help! 😅 Hopefully no harm comes of this mistake! I’ll be sure to correct this moving forward 🙏🏾

Sorry to hear you had a few people coming at you over your last video - but I'm not surprised . I understood completely why the video was made and much of what you said i personally experienced in the beginning. I love locs but like everything else ; they are not perfect and i see nothing wrong with educating the bad with the good . I don't know if those people were subscribers or not but if they took the time to click on your avatar ( never mind your channel name ) they'd see that you're a stark advocate for locs .
If anyone else has straight hair dreads like me what I would recommend is put very little product in and don't wash for the first month and a half. I washed my hair 1-2 times a month for the first 2 months and by the third my hair was about as locked up as my friend who has had locks for about 8 months
But washing locks it up so you actually just need it to wash it before you start moving around whenever you want to. 3x/wk or more. This would cause was more problems than solving
I hear what you are saying bruh, but I started my locs with over six inches of hair, and it took less time to loc. I noticed this with other people I know that started with long hair as well. Damien Walter broke this down a few years back, and it made perfect sense. Longer hair does not take longer to lock up. Stay blessed bruh.
I started with comb coils, and I would just manipulate a cylindrical shape by just twisting and twirling with my fingers every now and then. I would say it took me maybe two months to loc; if that. I heavily researched everything about locs, and I consulted with some rastas that I know on a wholistic approach without all the products. I have this mesh cap that I used within my first few months, and I would shower with it to get my hair wet and wash my locs, then I would just lightly twist and twirl with my fingers.
Oliver Young that’s fascinating! Anytime I’ve seen comb coils on longer hair it’s always taken longer to loc/mature than shorter Locs.. Mainly based on lockers I follow and my own experience with my two journeys. It’s never as quick a locking process as shorter hair. That’s the only reason for the questions because I’m wondering if it’s a matter of products, methods, hair type or something specific? 🤔 either way I appreciate being checked on this! I gotta do more research!
TP locks fasho bruh, I believe my hair texture plays the biggest part. I have 3c, and about all the hair types of type 4. My hair texture is extremely soft and curly. Besides that, I was very consistent my first year. It takes nothing for my hair to tangle up when I was loose natural (de tangling was a nightmare all the time). I just stuck to a healthy routine that worked for me, and I never let up ever since. It’s definitely a debatable topic though, and every person is different.
Thank you for all you loc vidoes keep it up I know you are tired of saying the samethign over and over but watching your journey has really given me hope on my 3rd time loc journey so again thank you and God Bless

I wish everyone watched responsibly lol. I get a lot of loc video suggestions now and before I watch one that catches my eye I had to get in the habit of checking out their channel and sometimes watching from the beginning before jumping into the one that caught my attention. Good example, I’ve fallen in love with a channel off one video only to realize later that the person had combed their locs out months before I even found them. Another example was a loctician that as I kept watching his videos I realized he had no idea how chemistry worked lol. Lessons learned 😂😂
Hard lessons!!! haha I hate when I fall for a youtuber that cuts their locs! It's always interesting too cuz most of the loc youtubers who cut em end up still talking about locs!! lol
I can’t believe you got dragged for that video - I have seen dozens with the same title and none are offensive. Locs are not for everyone, and I’m glad I was able to use videos like yours to weigh the pros and cons before finally taking the plunge 4 weeks ago. Like you said, people need to actually watch the whole video and see what your channel is about before making snap judgements.
Damn bruh lol I thought the Top 5 Reason Not To video was fire. Then again, I watched the whole video. Go figure😏I’m currently growing my hair out to start my FOURTH set of locs. Your content gets me hype to undertake this journey again. Never mind the haters. Keep doing your thing king. Bless✌🏽
I’m 2 months into the journey and my hair before locking was 8-10 inches and was by my chin when stretched. But my hair has been locking up very quickly. I have a mix of 4a and 4b. I’m expecting to be able to just wash and go at around 4 months.
I just started my locs 2-3 weeks ago and my hair has already started budding (I have medium length 4c hair) and my journey starting off is going very good. The only problem is that my scalp stays super dry and before locs my way of moisturizing was with deep conditionings, what should I do know I use my rose water and oils, but it just doesn’t seem to help...
@@vanessahoward4484 you need a clarifying shampoo. I’ve been using taliah wajiid black earth full body shampoo and I love it. I sprits my hair with rose water and oil water and vitamin e oil blend. I also oil my scalp with a blend I made and wash my locs weekly every 8-12 days depending on what my scalp needs and my workout regimen.
Yea my scalp gets super dryyyy but i use the rosewater, and coconut oil because other oils irritate my scalp. I notice less dryness when i oil about every other day.
My hair never grew until I started to drop all the olive oils and wack ass curl creme completely, and just used coconut oil/souffle everyday so my hair can stay moisturized and out of no where it blew up enough to start locing
My first set of locs only took me 1 year but my hair was shorter. So I'm curious to see how long it will take with this set because my hair was down my back. Ny hair type is a cross between 2c~3A. Which helps with the locking process. I'm doing semi freeform now too. IDK if that makes a difference in the time it takes to get to maturity. But it will be fun to see.
My hair is 3C and it’s been about a month and I’m seeing no budding or anything at all, I often have to retwist it as well at the roots because it just unravels when I sleep
Same thing happens to me this is the start of my 3rd week and first retwist. I did not wash nor was it washed but my scalp was cleaned really good because of the fineness of my hair. I do not have a lot of hair strands I have thinner hair. But the loctechian said its looking good because she thought my hair was gonna give her a hard time. So hang in there because I am.
I'm a 3B and my hair is past my shoulders. It's more wavy with little curls. She's a 4A and she says her hair would lock up faster. I'm thinking of just getting braids and leaving it in and never taking it out.
My hair is super coarse. Its like 7C; cause mine loc in a week. I can't comb through it after 1 week. My hair got a natural Elmer's glue effect going on in my cylindricals.
Man been struggling w my locs for too long. My hairdresser was very messy and had a toxic environment. So I left. An tried to retwist an wash on my own. Both times I tried I don’t seem to have my clips on right or I’m not gathering my hairs an retwist ig right. If there is any way I can reach u on a more personal note so I can better my locs that would be a blessing! Love your videos! And love your vibe! Stay humble an blessed 💯🙌🏿
I have more than one hair type my sides n back are one way and my top n edges are another. The hair n my front has been the hardest to keep locked but more I retwist the better the hold.
Hey friend, this video is very informative for newbies. Anyone who came for you behind that video obviously doesn’t know how beneficial you are to the Loc community and how much you’ve contributed to the encouragement of others to join us on this journey. Keep doing what you do King. Peace & Blessings ❤️💛💚 P.S. are you losing weight?
We agree there. I say that in the video as well. Very tough to make and exact date but there are indicators for how long it could take.✊🏾 Thanks for the comment!
It’s almost been 2 months with locs and they’ve been budding for about a week and I have 4a - 4b type hair. Washed my hair 2 days ago (using a durag) and almost nothing came out 😁💯
You’re almost at that year mark! Time will fly by! After a year in I couldn’t even keep up with what month I was on! 😅 patience is key! You got this!!! ✊🏾
My curl pattern is around 3C but 4A in some parts like the sides and back. I’m 7 months in, started off with comb coils with it being around 6 inches in length and have maintained it every 2 months by getting it interlocked. I’ve noticed my dreads in the middle feel hard and locked, but around the outside of the dread it’s still puffy, like it has layers of loose hair around the solid part. Some of my dreads are zigzagging, like not completely straight but actually in a zig zag pattern, some are a c shape like at the back, probably where I sleep on them while they’re locking up, some of the tips are locked and blunted, some are puffy and curly and haven’t started to loc yet. I’ve loved every stage of the loc journey, and excited that I still have loads of time before they fully mature because this stage looks so good imo. Especially with a lineup and sides clean 🙏🏾 I’ve done a little bit of crocheting here and there but nothing drastic, like tucking in long hairs that aren’t with the loc or fixing loops, but I think something that helps me is getting it interlocked. From the get go my loctician told me my locks would just unravel after a wash and I’d have to get them retwisted every couple weeks (because I have a sensitive scalp and snapping hair that’s gone into a different loc hurts especially when I leave it for too long) so instead I just endure the pain of interlocking for an hour, and my locs stay looking newly retwisted for at least a month, then the other month is just looking like I have new growth but it’s still tidy. Interlocking does really hurt though! She does it way too tight so last time I got her to not do it so tight, and it still lasts just not as long. But I prefer that new growth look anyway! I don’t really like the scalp showing and all that
This finally answered my question. I started locking September of last year, hair is about 7inches in length. Still frizzes when I wash but each time I do a retwist every 2 months, it's becoming less, though they're not fully matured
Happy to be helpful! You will get through this! Check out my 3 year video to see where I started with full commentary on each phase! 😁 If I can do it you can too! ✊🏾

Getting “spicy” with you!! Lol 😂😂 good way to phrase it. I’m not sure if my hair is loced yet. They look and feel weird but they don’t come out when I wash anymore. It’s been like 6 months now
You know it’s funny! I remember being all the way at the one year mark and not feeling like I was locked either. It’s so har to predict that timetable! But yea I use the term at work. It’s a little more fun than abrasive! 😂

Oliver Young that’s really interesting 🤔 May I ask what method you started with? Interlock or two strand twist?
Oliver Young always open to new information just seems to be opposite of some of my anecdotes but I’m absolutely welcome to being wrong about this!! 😅
It’s definitely a debatable topic though, and every person is different.
we love you man. dont care what people think keep doing you and keep informing us about what you have learned about this type of hair and culture
Gee my hair 4c is so thick this is in my hair over 2 years now . Root arent lock
Thanks for the estimate! I started almost a month ago on very very short hair so now I have something to look forward to.
My hair is very course and I did two strand and it took 5 months to loc. I love the that I can wash and go. In love!!!!!!
I just began my loc journey, so l’m here for all the tips l can find
Just based on your tone idk how ppl would feel any type of way about you based on a video. 👑
Bro I hope your channel works out and things go well for you but DAMN. You really took your time answering the only question we were asking about
Thank you for all you loc vidoes keep it up I know you are tired of saying the samethign over and over but watching your journey has really given me hope on my 3rd time loc journey so again thank you and God Bless
Hope you don’t let the negativity get to you man. Your videos are helping me out a lot and I know I’m not the only one. Only week 2 of my lock journey and hoping your videos will get me through the rest haha!
Give them Spicy T.P. i believe in you cos you are here to educate not entertain.
You are right T.P cos I am exactly one month on my Loc journey, hv washed twice now and the finger coils starter style i used didnt unravel. My hair is lik a 4z 😂
She said 4z 😂😂😂
i wish i woulda locced at the beginning of quarantine..i wouldnt have to worry abt “ugly stages” bc i’ve been in the house..i would’ve had mature and long dreads by now
I say the same damn thing
I appreciate your channel bro! I recently got starter locs 4 days ago! Loc Knowledge is power bro! Keep them coming! 🖕🏾 them haters!
Thanks bro! I’m glad I can help! Just trying to do my part! ✊🏾
lol I love you bro, but "lets get into the video" at 5:12 lol really!
UglyHouse Studios 😂😂😂 had to get a lot off my chest lol
@@TPlocks Just started my locks and I use your videos for a lot of info. keep up the good work bro. Trust, your very entertaining just having fun. PS i went with interlock because if my skin.
My hair is 3b and bleached . I did one dread as a trial and it locked wash n go level in 2 months . But I did swim in the sea 6 times during that time the hair is waist length and am 5'11 .
I hope this helps ppl. I didn't use any locking gels but the salt water 🌊 helped for sure .
Probably the best explanation Iv heard on locking , not too complex either
Thanks for the comment! I try to keep it mix in information with entertainment. Learning everyday
I’m new to your channel and I took your last video about the 5 reasons not to get dreadlocks as, providing both sides of the spectrum. The good and the bad, which is information we all need! Keep posting videos and i’ll keep watching them! ✊🏾
I’m glad you got it! People were coming for me!! Lol
love your videos brother powerful dreadlocs knowledge you are apart of my dread journey.
People really shouldn’t attack you for how they grasp what you’re saying.
Exactly lol! It won’t affect me next time though! It just really caught me off guard lol
@@TPlocks I've been growing my hair out for 2 years now and I want to get instant dreadlocks but idk how long they will be can u give me feedback
Welcome to the comment section 😂.
I get it but for my sanity imma just start removing comments I don’t like. Haha I don’t wanna be that guy but I gotta protect my peace. Otherwise imma be clapping back and everyone. Lol
Hello bro don't mind the crazies lol , am here in the Bamamas just watched your video and wanted to encourage you to keep spreeding the loc knowledge, i have two strand twist and they are looking good, am waiting for two months to get a retwist. Thanks again bro
Keep doing your thing man. Im trying to start locks but I havent yet im just trying to see what Im going to get myself into. But so far everything I see from u seem straight forward. Dont listen to that toxic stuff man. keep it focused and keep evolving!

Bless✌🏽
Watching it all definitely helps! 😅 Thanks family!
I’m 2 months into the journey and my hair before locking was 8-10 inches and was by my chin when stretched. But my hair has been locking up very quickly. I have a mix of 4a and 4b. I’m expecting to be able to just wash and go at around 4 months.
mans went through anything and had learned it the hard way but still his dreads are ON POINT
i have short dreads and 4c hair. Im also 2 months and 16 days in and im already budding up 🔥💪
Thanks for the input! I’m coming up 2 months and was a little concerned about why I wasn’t seeing progress.
You got it! How long has it been so far?
Only been two months in on 4b/4c hair. Seeing some good budding, but they are still poofy. Still good nonetheless!
Newbie here, about to get my twists at the end of the month....ready for my locs. Honestly wish I would have started years ago.
@kxxkk ksxk ima try it out I guess what should I wash my hair with?
Thanks for asking this.Same hair type...same stage in the journey...same initial approach with care....I was rubbing my scalp thinking how dry it is.
Starting my loc journey in 3 weeks can’t wait! New subbie 👋🏽
Starting mine next month
My hair is 4c and is only like an inch and a half long. I got my dreads started yesterday.
Thanks a bunch for all the sharing. Dope as usual. Not even on high top locs or comb coils but getting a lotta info. Keep it up bro.
Egeonu Victor I’m happy to help! ✊🏾
Keep it 💯 on’em! Keep it spicy 🌶🌶🌶.
You’re …. White.
I was locking for 2 months than gave up and now im trying again this time i wont give up trust
My hair is 3C and it’s been about a month and I’m seeing no budding or anything at all, I often have to retwist it as well at the roots because it just unravels when I sleep
You can always try going to a loctician and allowing them to lock your hair with a crochet needle. :)
I don’t even gotta answer now!!! 🙏🏾 lol
I’ll just be patient but thanks man
Same thing happens to me this is the start of my 3rd week and first retwist.
Thx start my dreads tomorrow Nd been growing my hair for a year
Im a 3a-3b curly hair boy and I wanna get locs soon I’m pretty excited!
I have more than one hair type my sides n back are one way and my top n edges are another. The hair n my front has been the hardest to keep locked but more I retwist the better the hold.
Great info and video. This made a lot of sense to me, as I’m currently in the process of locking my hair. Thanks so much for this!
I am definitely losing weight! Had to get rid of this dad bod haha
Started my love 2 days ago and my head itching like hell😂
im growing out my curls until junior year and then ima shave my head and freeform or sponge
Why shave it off ? Why not juss start rn bro
@G H O S T. to do semi freeform. longer hair takes longer to lock up. shorter hair locks up quicker. i could also donate my hair.
@@Dfrmsoutheast i fw the curls rn. i also wanna donate my hair eventually. and i want a full freeform process
@@treyko_ I respect dat fr bro💕
Its different for each person mine took almost a year to lock so it depends on the person
We agree there. I say that in the video as well. Very tough to make and exact date but there are indicators for how long it could take.✊🏾 Thanks for the comment!
@@TPlocks no problem bro good video by the way
I have a 4b/4c and it took me 8 months😬
AntiSocialEd that’s that good hair! 😅
It’s almost been 2 months with locs and they’ve been budding for about a week and I have 4a - 4b type hair. Washed my hair 2 days ago (using a durag) and almost nothing came out 😁💯
Also I have ultra short hair
YNG SMOKE that definitely helps!!!
Thanks for the info! I will be 9mths loc’d on the 24th and my locs are still lumpy and bumpy with buds! Patience is a virtue 🥴
You’re almost at that year mark! Time will fly by! After a year in I couldn’t even keep up with what month I was on! 😅 patience is key! You got this!!! ✊🏾
TP locks Yes 🙌🏾 I can’t wait!! Ha! Are you kidding... I’m too anal retentive to loose track 😂 Thanks for the encouragement 💪🏾
Especially with a lineup and sides clean 🙏🏾
I’ve done a little bit of crocheting here and there but nothing drastic, like tucking in long hairs that aren’t with the loc or fixing loops, but I think something that helps me is getting it interlocked.
I don’t really like the scalp showing and all that
Im 5 weeks in I gave you a shout out on my last video, your channel is great!!
Let me go check that out!! I’m behind on your videos!! Thanks so much for the shoutout and all the support! 🙏🏾
I want to actually start dreading so this channel is awesome
TP just made a another banger aye enjoy the content got me up Benj watching at night keep up the good work🤟🏽🖤
Thanks bro! Imma keep em coming! ✊🏾
This finally answered my question. I started locking September of last year, hair is about 7inches in length. Still frizzes when I wash but each time I do a retwist every 2 months, it's becoming less, though they're not fully matured
Thank you, you where very helpful ❤️
I just got my done yesterday on July 9th and it's July 10th so I'm just getting started on my locs
And I was just about to ask you this question too 🤣💪🏾
I knew someone was lol. I gotchu ✊🏾
Starting my locs Sunday hope you can continue making good content
I'm on it!! Imma keep em coming!
Thanks😊😊
I've had my free form dreads for 2 years they still not locked
New to the channel,,, very informative, doing research on starting my locs, products, what to expect( first 3 months🥴). Thanks
Happy to be helpful! You will get through this! Check out my 3 year video to see where I started with full commentary on each phase! 😁 If I can do it you can too! ✊🏾

Also keep your head up bro . I watch all your videos and your great.
I like your energy man i had to subscribe, gonna start my loc journey and use your advice; hopefully it all turns out well
Thanks for the sub and support fam! ✊🏾
3-5 months is blessed I don’t mind waiting that 😂
Getting “spicy” with you!!
I’m mad I’m just seeing this and I hate you’re getting haters 🤦🏾♂️ been with you a long time I’m just rewatching old videos and I feel you man
Just started my locks today💪🏾
Welcome to the loc family 🔥
I have freeform dread I don’t thing I am in the ugly stage I like how my dread look like
